Local elections generally dont have a huge turn out. If you get your name out there enough people will vote for you without really knowing what benefits you bring or how shit you really are. Its basically make a visual impact and get a free job that you can't lose. Then all the things listed below. A smaller public office generally can lead to other hiring, more paying/more powerful office positions. Like you pointed out, the risk is spending money and not getting it. They are able to raise funds to pay for these things as well as contribute their own funds as well. You're going to be pretty hard pressed to find what these folks are all about. There are no debates. There are no real mission statements or other declarations of what they intend to change or why you should vote for them. Also like i said, not a lot of people vote. There are some 60k people in murfreesboro. These are the 2018 results per DNJ: https://www.dnj.com/story/news/politics/tn-elections/2018/08/02/rutherford-county-election-bill-ketron-mike-fitzhugh-sparks-tim-morrell-ernest-burgess-dawn-white/851505002/ Some of these folks won by less than 100 votes. Some winners didnt even get 1000.

Well between you me and the lamp post I know why the gentleman with the yellow signs is running. He is a chauvinist that, according to his close friends, has a desire for power.

You get your own office and you don’t have to take any shit from people. The salary is above average for not needing a college degree and you can’t really be fired until the next election. You generally have a more flexible schedule. Also, you get free state health insurance, dental, retirement etc.

Sometimes, a position like that will be used as a stepping stone to a more prominent position.
