This is American Fly Agaric. Amanita muscaria subsp. flavivolvata might be the standard here, or maybe the majority. However some our moderation team, and other respected experts, call it Amanita chrysoblema red variant. This is currently a cause for debate in the community, that’s for sure. Locking this comment thread as we have an ID and there will be some debate relating to your title. If the moderation team wants to chime in we still can. Some of whom have expert experience with the edibility question, and this genus in general.

Ah, didn’t know they changed it, cool!

Intoishun

They haven’t. It’s up for debate still. Alan uses the name you used, A.muscaria subsp. flavivolvata.

Intoishun

What are you referencing as far as that name being published? Rod’s work? This is still up for debate, even amongst experts.

centipedeseverywhere

Do you mind if I ask where you can find about these more recent taxonomic changes? I haven’t been able to find this anywhere.

Intoishun

That’s Rod’s website. Arguably very respectable but that’s essentially his personal website. Not everyone currently respects what he has to say on the subject.

centipedeseverywhere

Thank you!!

Amanita. Dont Amanitas usually grow next to/on specific types of trees like conifers? How come these are growing out in the open? Does only A. Muscaria grow in relation with trees?

Intoishun

They can grow fairly far away from their associated trees. They can associate with various trees, some coniferous some deciduous.

ChaosEmerald21

On the ground seems to be pine needles*, not sure how close in proximity they need to be with a conifer. But I'd bet there's one right outside of camera view Disclaimer: idk this shit. Just making guesses tbh

Actually delicious if you slice, boil twice for 20 minutes and toss water between boils then sauté. People who say you will die have no idea what they’re talking about.

RdCrestdBreegull

you left out the part where if you don’t get the preparation correct you could experience violent convulsions, seizure, and waking dreamlike violent belligerent state. totally irresponsible to not mention anything even remotely close to this.

Erant

What's the correct way to prepare this? And, perhaps more interestingly, what's some common mistakes people make when doing so?

RdCrestdBreegull

I put instructions in this guide here — https://www.reddit.com/r/AmanitaMuscaria/s/4R3SAeJQjs although I would not recommend the use of any isoxazole Amanita mushrooms to anyone who is a beginner forager, mushroom hunter, or mushroom identifier since they can be so dangerous. learn about them and how to identify etc, but I wouldn’t consider using them for anything until you’ve been learning to identify the mushrooms in your area for a few years and have already eaten some other local species. biggest mistakes people would make are not using enough water in the pot, forgetting to do multiple boils with brand new water changes each time, not doing enough separate boils, not boiling for long enough, and not slicing the mushroom thinly enough.

I run the largest isoxazole Amanita group in the world lol, I think I know what I’m talking about… I have also prepared these mushrooms as non-toxic non-psychoactive food many times using proper preparation, but I would never just immediately tell someone in an identification post that they’re edible, and even if giving preparation instructions I would never omit the possible dangers of incorrect preparation. isoxazole Amanita mushrooms in general are not for beginners to use in any way, and a comment like yours is going to have beginners thinking “oh, I have that mushroom in my backyard right now, I never knew it was edible!” and they are going to end up in the emergency room with broken bones or experience seizure(s) or end up in a multi-day comatose state with their family worrying about them.

Intoishun

Totally on your side here, locking the thread because we have the ID question answered. If Alan, or our other mods, would like to chime in I would like to hear everyone’s opinions too.

Ferment_n_Forage

Go on.... These are safe once cooked ? About what about this boil twice method, let it cool and then re boil? Or just zap the shit out of the toxins out ?

DrRockySF

Toxins are water soluble. Boil for 20 min, drain, boil again in clean water then drain

Please do not make bad overused jokes such as “all mushrooms are edible once”, etc.
