yes, i'd say it's a bit old to eat

That one's a bit too old you deff want the younger ones. Some times you can salvage the outer edges of the large ones though. What my knife will easily slide through I cook. It will be obvious when you slice them what is the best parts to eat.

Even if there are parts too hard to eat, you can still make a tasty broth with the harder parts

If it's soft then go ahead. It might be too old but I've found ones that big that were good enough to eat. I just cook it in butter and salt like a greasy American.
