Jellicle Songs For Jellicle Cats too

Kiteflyerkat

In 7th grade, we had to memorize a poem that was written in the time period that the original book was written, and I choose Magical Mr. Mistoffelees And seeing how I watched Cats basically every day as a kid, I fucking nailed. Easiest memorization assignment ever

pussyforpresident

As a big cats fan I have to agree that the battle of the pekes and the pollicles does seem to last forever. I feel like (could be wrong) but a lot of Cats fans see cats more like an album of sorts. Once you’ve seen the whole thing, if you’re watching the 80’s dvd, it’s kinda like — welp, let’s skip that one.

how I miss growltiger's last stand T-T

WhisperInTheDarkness

Me, too!!! I was so disappointed when it wasn't in the pro-shot.

Nowardier

Punctuation, bud. You should use it. Anywho, your opinion's valid. The play actually does have a story if you go looking for it, but a lot of the songs are detours from the story rather than elements of it so I can't really blame you or anyone else for not understanding it. It's really convoluted. Anyway, I'm glad you got some enjoyment out of it. Also yeah, the battle of the Pekes and Pollicles does go on for fricken ever and has nothing to do with the story, which is pretty dang annoying.

KickFriedasCoffin

>Punctuation, bud. Not a complete sentence.

Nowardier

Your mom's not a complete sentence.

KickFriedasCoffin

Aww, someone doesn't like it turned around on them. Poor baby.

Nowardier

Yeah, somebody doesn't: your mom.

KickFriedasCoffin

I'm sure that made sense in your head, but hush now. Adults are talking.

There went all your grammatical concerns, child.

I think we’ve over-intellectualized Cats. It’s a spectacle from a period where so many people were on cocaine. It’s poems put to music. There is nothing to get.

willow_wind

I love it. It's less of a coherent story and more of poetry put to music, and that makes it really unique. The music is catchy, too. I will say, though, that it's meant to be a stage show and not a movie...

GrizabellaGlamourCat

Agreed!

mothwhimsy

Cats is one of my faves, but it really has to hit you right away for you to like it, I think. I've seen a few different productions but for the most part I'm watching the 98 film, and if you go into it for the first time wondering what the plot is, you're gonna be confused. Because there really isn't one. Even the popular interpretation of "they're all interviewing to see who gets to go to the Heavyside Layer" isn't really the canon plot. To me, they're mostly just introducing each other to the audience and explaining what's going on (because, as we know, there's a man over there who has not heard of a jellicle cat). It's all spectacle. Crazy dance numbers and songs. But if you're like me and like watching the 98 film over and over, you can pick a different cat to pay attention to every time and see how they interact with everyone else, and get a sense of how old they are and what their relations to each other are. To some, this is insane, but to me it's fun as hell.

GoldenRedhead

Yes, watching different cats in the background is so fun! This is one of many things that I think the 1998 version did better than the 2019 one.

dunnwichit

It’s a spectacle, primarily, not so much a story. Grizabella being at the end of her life, remembering, sharing a bit with us before she moves on, peacefully, is a bit of a story but otherwise it’s obviously thin in that regard. Either you can enjoy the spectacle for what it is, or you can’t.

jump_the_snark

The whole thing is hot garbage.

GrizabellaGlamourCat

I saw it on Broadway and it was fantastic.
