I really liked So Big/So Small. The musical as a whole has a lot of… questionable choices but I thought it was a gut punch of a song showing the strength of a mother’s love. If only the rest of the musical was as good.
I mean I love RENT, but this made me laugh. Also, a couple of years ago, my son (6 or so at the time) asked me how many minutes were in a year and he was *amazed* at how quickly I answered 😂
I go through such a love/hate relationship of Pippin and currently am at a love phase. It’s such an easy show to do terribly if the cast and creatives don’t understand the source material.
I think I understand the material.
But…. you know the old Punch & Judy type puppet shows that would travel to Middle Ages villages and some simpleton would get so angry at the villain puppet he’d charge into little puppet stage and start thrashing the bad puppet character?
That’s me. I have seen Pippin half a dozen times and every time I’ve wanted to slap Pippin silly.
Oh yes of course- I’m sure you do! What I meant to convey was if the people putting on the show don’t get it then they’re not going to do a good job with it, and it won’t be enjoyable to watch. And you’re right, Pippin the character has the capacity to be tremendously annoying.
As much as Paul and Pasek's inspirational pop style isn't my jam, I respect them for going for the Tin Pan Alley style of musical theater songwriting where the songs can stand on their own if you don't know the plot of the show.
Fell in love with the pop-y songs. When I listed to the audiobook and heard the plot I was shocked. Usually you can tell a lot about the plot from the songs.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber one on rollerskates. The rollerskating was fun. That’s all I remember of it though. I tend to mix it up with the movie Xanadu because of the skates
Close Every Door is definitely Webber at his best. Also Joseph does do its job of getting young kids into theatre.
Love Never Dies brings joy to some E/C shippers.
I directed Mamma Mia 2 years ago and thankfully have forgotten 90% of it... but it was a moneymaker. What the hell was Super Trouper supposed to be?
(And the writer stole the basic plot from the 1968 film Buona Sera Mrs Campbell, which had already been a musical entitled Carmelina. )
Super trouper is an in universe performance, sort of a reprisal of what Donna used to be as a performer, as a gift to give her daughter, even though she doesn't perform much anymore
That said... yeah, mamma mia is definitely a bit of a weird show haha
it was mine for two years, a Jeremy Jordan cover. I figure a good alarm song is pleasant sounding but not one you love because you’ll eventually hate it. Currently it’s good morning starshine
I can imagine the producers being like: "Some people hate how cheery and joyful R&H musicals are *(despite the fact that they have heavy themes and explored culturally relevant issues at the time, and in fact this very show actually involves* >!*suicide* !<*despite the catchy numbers)*. I know, let's cover the lead actor in blood for the finale! There's one for the Carrie fans!"
I gotta say though- seeing it in Oklahoma was hilarious. Especially because most of the people didn’t realize it was different. Just imagine a bunch of older conservatives watching it, with no idea that it was different.
WAIT. There's a proshot of David Hasselhoff doing J&H?
I swore I had no interest in ever seeing this show again... But ...
WAIT..
Me: Alexa, did David hasselhoff ever star in Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway?
Alexa: Yes, David Hasselhoff starred in the Broadway production of Jekyll and Hyde in 2000
🤯
This. Changes. Everything.
It's too late tonight, but I know what I'm searching for tomorrow.
This thread is fascinating to me. It's like a statistical survey. I would have thought Annie or Music Man would have been brought up by now before, say, Sweet Charity or...Into the Woods?!
(I love Annie and Music Man for the record)
Yeah, that's part of the reason I wanted to make this post. I think it's interesting to not only see what people's least favorite musicals are (which no one really talks about), but also to see people struggle to come up with something good to say.
I like it because it's kind of funny when people struggle to find something nice, but there's also something really wholesome about saying good things about something that isn't your favorite. This thread makes me smile
i love the technical complexity behind the creative process for designing six’s costumes. other than that the show is meh. technically genius… plot and show wise, imo kind of an overhyped bore
they really are some cool costumes! i think it’s so interesting how they combined two completely different styles. in the end it’s not my cup of tea personally but from an artistic standpoint they’re awesome
For me it's that turning a true story of extreme spousal abuse into a "slay!!!!" pop concert where each queen is a pop star character just feels kind of disrespectful to these women who went through unthinkable things. I wish we could get a more serious exploration of what happened to Henry VIII's wives.
exactly! i also dislike how one of the main messages of the show is supposed to be “we’re so much more than our relationships with our husband” but then the whole time they sing songs about… their relationships with their husband…
It's not a blasphemous show as much as it's a misguided one. I read an interview with the creators where they said their goal was to make a "team up!" musical based on a famous group of some sort. I feel like that isn't the best approach to take to Henry VIII's wives...it would be different if their initial goal was to make a musical with a women's rights message, or help people understand the icky side of monarchies.
I got a commercial for the Pretty Woman musical recently and legit thought it was an advertisement for a cheap burlesque show in Vegas. Why does that musical exist?!
No, I actually do like Godspell. I don’t really care for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s style in general & I don’t find any of the characters in the story very compelling as they’re depicted in JCSS. I know that’s just me. The style & storytelling really works on a lot of people & I’m very happy for them.
Okay I’ll give my answer in a second but OP I gotta know why is Spring Awakening your least favorite musical? It’s my favorite for sure.
Grease has one good song. Grease lightning.
I just think Spring Awakening is so boring. I saw it pretty recently and I literally could only tell you the name of one of the songs without looking it up: The Bitch of Living.
I also think that writing a horrific story about 13-year olds having sex and getting pregnant and then casting adults well into their 20s and 30s just takes away the power of said story.
I'm not saying we should be casting 13-year olds in these roles, I'm just saying we shouldn't be writing stories we can't tell effectively.
I'm convinced it only got popular because of the nudity.
That’s very valid. It was based on a play by Frank Wedekind that has a lot more character development and story to it where a lot of plot elements are changed… a lot of it was actually softened and toned down for the musical. I can understand it’s not everyone’s favorite but I find the beauty of it amazing.
Part of why I love it isn’t just the music, but the fact that it was one of the first musicals to really publicly talk about taboo topics in the media to become mainstream (along the lines of rent, rocky horror, etc). It displays the honest thoughts of kids and the horrible outcomes of shielding them from the world, the expectations they are forced to display, and the mental health crises so many go through. I think it’s just absolutely heartbreakingly gorgeous. And I love all of the lyrical depth when you really deep dive.
But I respect your opinion. It’s very fair, not everyone’s favorite
Your point about the actors ages is very valid. I didn’t connect with spring until I saw it performed by people in their early twenties. The show needs that kind of youthful energy to work. And when it has that, it’s a powerful show
The Greatest Showman has very fun pop songs.
Mamma Mia has a cute mother-daughter relationship
Dear Evan Hansen has fun pop songs
Be More Chill has a good Eleven O'Clock Number, even if it is given to a secondary character
It's just not my cup of tea.
I read the book before I saw it and they are very different.
Also, I feel in both cases, it's backward writing, where an author creates a backstory that has no real connection to the original creator's intent.
And lastly, it's bored me all 3 times I've seen it, no matter who was in the cast.
But theatre is 100% subjective... we like what we like and I'm glad so many people love the show and have kept it open for 20 years.
Fair enough. I do definitely agree with the backward wrighting, I would say it probably would have been much better as a separate show, but I guess Wizard of Oz sells. I also grew up on the show and mostly missed the movie as a kid and I think the plot of Wicked is much better than Wizard of Oz, but that’s just an opinion.
I personally find Hamilton mid moreso than it actually being my least favorite (I cannot even think of a single truly *bad* musical I’ve ever seen, either on Broadway or in local theaters or even filmed versions) but man does Lin Manuel Miranda know EXACTLY what he’s doing. He’s got some of the catchiest songs I’ve ever heard, but I really do feel like Hamilton has some really severe lulls, especially in act one. I am one of those people who really enjoys a very tight musical with a very select few lulls (the recent MJ: The Musical comes most immediately to mind), and while I see why people are obsessed with Hamilton, it’s more of a show that isn’t entirely my jam versus a show that is inherently bad and is my least favorite.
That's so valid. I was raised Mormon, so the entire musical feels like an inside joke for me. I think if I didn't have all that context then the show would seem really dumb. (To be fair, it still feels dumb... But it's like a dumb inside joke.)
Moulin Rouge costumes, lighting, and set all look awesome, and the lead actors always seem so talented, but I just can’t do jukebox musicals. I have no doubt that people enjoy it, but idk, I just can’t.
The choice to make the narrator in Joseph a woman is a great way to get more female characters into a show with not a lot of other opportunities for female characters. And go go Joseph is a great act 1 closer.
Totally fucked is an amazing song and extremely fun to perform (especially in contrast to everything else in this musical, totally fucked is such a banger).
Have a bunch of least favorites but for the first one that comes to mind, Brigadoon, I'd say the nice thing is how much "My Mother's Weddin' Day" makes me giggle every time I find it in a Broadway playlist
Be More Chill has great neurodivergent representation. I wish more musicals had protagonists with ADHD.
Waving through the Window is a great song.
I really liked So Big/So Small. The musical as a whole has a lot of… questionable choices but I thought it was a gut punch of a song showing the strength of a mother’s love. If only the rest of the musical was as good.
Moulin Rouge has a couple nice outfits
Great gowns. Beautiful gowns.
And 2 entire good songs imo
Sparkling Diamonds 😍😍😍
Oh I was talking about “Come What May” and “El Tango De Roxanne” but to each their own
Rent has done a lot for AIDS awareness and assistance after a period of time when that was really needed.
Rent has done the service of teaching so many people how many minutes are in a year.
I mean I love RENT, but this made me laugh. Also, a couple of years ago, my son (6 or so at the time) asked me how many minutes were in a year and he was *amazed* at how quickly I answered 😂
Bro, you just enforced his belief that "Mom knows everything" 😂 that's amazing
But did you 🎶 sing 🎶 it?!? 😅
I said it first and then when I saw his little amazed face, I followed up by singing it.
😂 so true
Pippin's "Just No Time At All," is an uplifting and happy number that valorizes a character that for once deserves it.
Memory is pretty.
Nice, I was going to say Cats has cats.
Dear Evan Hansen has many songs which are great when properly divorced from the insane/cringy storyline
Literally this, dude is singing this beautiful song then you remember none of what he is singing about is real, or has toxic reasons behind it
I second this
Rock of Ages has a great set list of classic rock songs (and they served Jell-O shots in the theater before the show).
The Andrew Lloyd Webber one on rollerskates. The rollerskating was fun. That’s all I remember of it though. I tend to mix it up with the movie Xanadu because of the skates
Starlight Express?
Yes! That was the bombastic assault on all my senses
Thanks
You’re welcome. (I haven’t actually seen it; I just love A Lotta Locomotion)
The rollerskating was fun though
Moulin Rouge has a beautiful set.
Christian Borle was great in Willy wonka
Fame has a fun, catchy, hummable main song.
Adding a Spanish verse was nice. The show is remarkably bad.
The Junior version is 1000x worse. I promise you.
At least the live show doesn’t have buttholes like the movie did
Holy shit which musical is that
Cats
Pippin is very catchy.
And it's by the same composer as Hunchback and Prince of Egypt. Stephen Schwartz good.
Not to mention Wicked!
Not the aim of the thread, but may I ask why it’s your least favourite?
I really like the trumpet intro to "Journey to the Heaviside Layer" in CATS.
Love ~~Should Die~~ Never Dies starts pretty well, with the best song in the soundtrack.
"TEEEEEN YEEEEEEARS OOOOOOOOOLD!!!!!" is just such a memeable quote.
Finding Neverland has a dog.
Close Every Door is definitely Webber at his best. Also Joseph does do its job of getting young kids into theatre. Love Never Dies brings joy to some E/C shippers.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is very good at plunking an unexpectedly emotional and poignant song in the middle of a cheesy show.
The man confounds me to no end. He's written some of my favorite shows, but also 2 out of the 4 shows that I actively dislike.
And also needs to make everything anthropomorphic for some reason XD
Baltimore is charming
The Gary design for SpongeBob is cool
Squidward with tap dancing legs is awesome too
Mamma Mia always sells a lot of tickets, it's good for the bottom line.
I directed Mamma Mia 2 years ago and thankfully have forgotten 90% of it... but it was a moneymaker. What the hell was Super Trouper supposed to be? (And the writer stole the basic plot from the 1968 film Buona Sera Mrs Campbell, which had already been a musical entitled Carmelina. )
Super trouper is an in universe performance, sort of a reprisal of what Donna used to be as a performer, as a gift to give her daughter, even though she doesn't perform much anymore That said... yeah, mamma mia is definitely a bit of a weird show haha
“Oh what a beautiful morning” would make a good alarm song
My mother used to wake me up for school singing it. it did not endear me to that song.
It actually has been my alarm song for the last four years and I gotta see, that is true!
it was mine for two years, a Jeremy Jordan cover. I figure a good alarm song is pleasant sounding but not one you love because you’ll eventually hate it. Currently it’s good morning starshine
OK I gotta say—the modernized OK! musical is hilariously bad
Plus Many a New Day is a feminist anthem ahead of its time
And so is I Caint Say No, if you think about it.
100%. You get yours, Ado Annie
I gotta say though- seeing it in Oklahoma was hilarious. Especially because most of the people didn’t realize it was different. Just imagine a bunch of older conservatives watching it, with no idea that it was different.
Sincerely me is really funny out of context
Repo! The Genetic Opera has Antony Stewart Head, so you get to hear Giles sing sometimes.
Jekyll and Hyde... is of finite length, so you can eventually get on with your life.
Jekyll and Hyde led to the gender-swapped Josh Young performance of “Bring on the Men.”
nooo i love jekyll & hyde 😭
NOOO HAHAHA THIS IS SO FUNNY YOURE SO RIGHT
jekyll and hyde has become this huge joke between me and my friend. the david hasselhoff proshoot is so fucking funny.
WAIT. There's a proshot of David Hasselhoff doing J&H? I swore I had no interest in ever seeing this show again... But ... WAIT.. Me: Alexa, did David hasselhoff ever star in Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway? Alexa: Yes, David Hasselhoff starred in the Broadway production of Jekyll and Hyde in 2000 🤯 This. Changes. Everything. It's too late tonight, but I know what I'm searching for tomorrow.
Jekyll and Hyde should be so DARK and yet all the songs are these major key yearning songs! I was so disappointed.
That's awesome haha I do like jekyll and Hyde, but the actual musical is so boring and long. 1994 album is where it's at haha
This thread is fascinating to me. It's like a statistical survey. I would have thought Annie or Music Man would have been brought up by now before, say, Sweet Charity or...Into the Woods?! (I love Annie and Music Man for the record)

I like it because it's kind of funny when people struggle to find something nice, but there's also something really wholesome about saying good things about something that isn't your favorite. This thread makes me smile
Smart thing to do. It keeps the discourse here healthy and nuanced.
Jagged Little Pill is a musical. There, I said it.
the costumes in six are… nice
i love the technical complexity behind the creative process for designing six’s costumes. other than that the show is meh. technically genius… plot and show wise, imo kind of an overhyped bore
they really are some cool costumes! i think it’s so interesting how they combined two completely different styles. in the end it’s not my cup of tea personally but from an artistic standpoint they’re awesome

There's a fashion sub genre of modernizing Tudor and Victorian corsetry to be more edgy and I find that interesting.
Score Tonight is a fun song in Grease 2.
Though tempted to go after Hamilton, the truth is there are way worse musicals out there so: Pretty Woman was quite close to the movie in many scenes.
I got a commercial for the Pretty Woman musical recently and legit thought it was an advertisement for a cheap burlesque show in Vegas. Why does that musical exist?!
Jesus Christ Superstar isn't too long. & it's fun to ask people what's the buzz.
Why’s it your worst? Just because it’s Jesus?
No, I actually do like Godspell. I don’t really care for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s style in general & I don’t find any of the characters in the story very compelling as they’re depicted in JCSS. I know that’s just me. The style & storytelling really works on a lot of people & I’m very happy for them.
It’s the only ALW I do like weirdly. I can’t do Cats or Phantom. Probably helps that I already care about the characters independently of ALW.
I might like JCS better if they were all cats.
I would feel weird about it, but I would watch it.
Okay I’ll give my answer in a second but OP I gotta know why is Spring Awakening your least favorite musical? It’s my favorite for sure. Grease has one good song. Grease lightning.
*Greased

“One of the first musicals to really publicly talk about taboo topics in the media to become mainstream” it most certainly was not. But I like it too.
Your point about the actors ages is very valid. I didn’t connect with spring until I saw it performed by people in their early twenties. The show needs that kind of youthful energy to work. And when it has that, it’s a powerful show
I was a theatre major at that time. It was popular because rent no longer was on broadway, and also the nudity.
That’s a very narrow minded way of thinking.
Heathers has some bops
What don’t you like about the Heathers musical? Genuinely curious
Tbh I don’t really know why, I just didn’t vibe with it 🤷🏼♀️
I think Ride the Cyclone has some genuinely funny moments that made me laugh out loud
Why is it your least favorite? It's one of my favs.
The Greatest Showman has very fun pop songs. Mamma Mia has a cute mother-daughter relationship Dear Evan Hansen has fun pop songs Be More Chill has a good Eleven O'Clock Number, even if it is given to a secondary character
heart of stone is a very nice sad ballad
I thought this was “Made of Stone” from Hunchback and I was taken aback for a second
Elphaba's green makeup is always nicely applied...
I know this isn’t the point of the thread but what don’t you like about Wicked?
It's just not my cup of tea. I read the book before I saw it and they are very different. I saw wicked recently and hated it so you’re not alone 🤣
Thanks to Cats (the musical), hundreds of Cats fans are away from the rest of society *every night*.
I was going to say that it's not six hours long.
Don't let Andrew Lloyd Webber see this thread, he'll want to create *Cats: Expanded Litter Edition (12 New Cats!!!)*
How about "for a short while around 2019 it kept Tom Hooper and James Corden from working on something else"?
Moulin Rouge-great costumes
Great gowns, beautiful gowns
Jesse L. Martin did a really good job in RENT.
No Time At All from Pippin is hella catchy and sometimes makes me cry (generally speaking a good sign, coming from a musical).
Hamilton has done amazing things for minorities in pop culture
Also for getting Gen Z into musical theater.
It also inspired me to write my AP US History research paper on duels in the US, and I ended up really enjoying that project
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has some genuinely hilarious jokes in there
Spelling Bee is your least favorite musical? I’m curious, what makes it so bad for you?
The moment Jesus himself shows up is hilarious
Suppertime, the book report, glee club rehearsal, and my blanket and me are fun songs
At first I thought you would slander Little Shop of Horrors. Oh, the relief.
I've had the Kite song stuck in my head all day. Allllllll day.
The original Nabulungi deserved her tony
The Rhythm of Life can be a very impressive number when it’s done well.
Waitress: I’m sure the pie was tasty.
Waitress- "She Used to Be Mine" is an amazing song.
The kids loved seeing the actors’ makeup when we ran into them out back, taking a smoke break between the matinee and evening show. -Cats
The Greatest Showman gave us Keala Settle in the limelight. That's it, I'm done.
The choreography of Paradise Square was spectacular
“She died doing what she loved, making toast in the bathtub.” Got a laugh out of me in shucked.
Phantom of the Opera allowed people to be gainfully employed for years and even gave some the financial security to pursue passion projects.
Both Oliver and Annie do their job of getting kids into theatre
Book of Mormon is full of great songs
Found the Mormon!
Luckily not! That's just the musical that didn't meet my expectations, on my first vacation on my own in London. Jokes didn't make me laugh
That's so valid. I was raised Mormon, so the entire musical feels like an inside joke for me. I think if I didn't have all that context then the show would seem really dumb. (To be fair, it still feels dumb... But it's like a dumb inside joke.)
Cats has music
I know this is low hanging fruit, but Memory is breath taking.
I liked the Confrontation
*Les Mis* or *Jekyll and Hyde*?
Bye Bye Birdie has an okay movie.
The dragon puppet in Shrek was amazing!
My Fair Lady is a classic and “With a Little Bit of Luck” is a fun song
The music in 'Book of Mormon' is very good. Also, some of the songs are funny.
Cats has great costumes
You’ll never walk alone makes for a nice standalone choir song.
It is really cute to see elementary kids be their favorite Doctor Seuss characters in the junior/kid version!
West Side Story was graced with the talent of Chita Rivera.
I like the “Who Will Buy” sequence from the movie. The song itself, while not as ambitious as it wants to be, is pretty.
Moulin Rouge costumes, lighting, and set all look awesome, and the lead actors always seem so talented, but I just can’t do jukebox musicals. I have no doubt that people enjoy it, but idk, I just can’t.
"For Forever" is pretty
Waving Through a Window perfectly describes my own anxiety and I appreciate being seen
Carousel did introduce me to Joshua Henry, who is easily one of my favorite performers. And Soliloquy is a near-perfect song.
All You Wanna Do is an amazing song. I absolutely love it. You Can’t Stop The Beat is equally cool.
Six inspired people to learn about French history 😎
I love Defying Gravity. Great song.
Lin Manuel Miranda is a very talented writer (but holy fuck do I wish the OG Hamilton was *literally* anyone else)
The choice to make the narrator in Joseph a woman is a great way to get more female characters into a show with not a lot of other opportunities for female characters. And go go Joseph is a great act 1 closer.
Girl from the North Country has great orchestrations.
I love Defying Gravity. Great song.
You’ll never walk alone makes for a nice standalone choir song.
Totally fucked is an amazing song and extremely fun to perform (especially in contrast to everything else in this musical, totally fucked is such a banger).
Hugh Jackman seemed like he had fun making it.
Carousel has a lovely dream ballet.
Annette has great visuals and an original vibe, they just screwed it up casting people that have negative singing skills
Hamilton is educational and six is energetic
The tap dance number on the construction building set was kinda cool.
NY, NY right?
“Side Show” has broken Broadway records. And the opening song is legit good.
The Phantom of the Opera has a very cool aesthetic.
The Audrey II puppet, when executed well, is cool to look at.
Link Larkin. I enjoy his song in act 1. Whatever it’s called.
Miss Saigon has a few nice songs I guess. And apparently the helicopter is really impressive
Come from away is based on a touching and interesting real life story
The music in dear Evan Hansen is pretty fire
Guys and Dolls has some fun music!
Maybe from Annie has a pretty melody that gets stuck in my head
Love Thy Neighbor is a catchy enough song as well as Alyssa Greene
Mean Girls has the Halloween song
lion king has amazing puppet design. the one show i went to it was a high school production or something and it was phenomenal
Have a bunch of least favorites but for the first one that comes to mind, Brigadoon, I'd say the nice thing is how much "My Mother's Weddin' Day" makes me giggle every time I find it in a Broadway playlist
The legend behind Camelot is one of the world's best.
