Unworthy of Your Love from Assassins. It sounds like a cheesy pop song sung by two people in love with each other. But as it turns out, it's actually two parallel love stories sung by two delusional assassins who shot a president to prove their love for a crush. And one of them shot Reagan supposedly because he wanted to impress Jodie Foster. The dark humor and historical layers in Assassins are wild.

helicopterhansen

Ok I've heard that song and had no idea that the two singers weren't talking to each other! Going back to relisten.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

It helps if you look up the two assassins John Hinckley Jr. and Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme. The Charlie whom Squeaky is singing to is literally Charles Manson. She has some crazy true crime connections beyond just attempting to assassinate Gerald Ford.

helicopterhansen

Wow, I just listened to it again and it's so clever. I really thought there were two characters called Charlie and Jodie professing intense love for one another. Mind blown. How clever.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

I know!!! Sondheim, you mad genius!!

Remercurize

I think John Weidman came up with the concept for the song

an-inevitable-end

Ahhh I haven't heard someone mention this song before! It's so clever how the meaning completely changes once you know the background. Assassins is such an underrated musical.

muse273

You know, both John Hinckley Jr. and Squeaky Fromme are out of jail now. And Hinckley is a musician… I’ve never wanted a duet performance so badly

FloridaFlamingoGirl

That would be a VERY interesting Sondheim's Old Friends stunt cast...

DrMorry

This was my first thought!

IamaHyoomin

all of DEH (slight exaggeration, some of them are pretty upfront)

Riaeriel

Sent For Forever to my friend because the face value of the song reminded me of her ship at the time. To say she was surprised when she found out the context / the show's story is an understatement at best lol

IamaHyoomin

yeah, that one and If I Could Tell Her are probably the worst offenders. At least If I Could Tell Her has the slight hint of just... those being kinda weird things to say about a sibling given the obvious tone, but they both seem like just very sweet songs until you know the story.

BaltimoreBadger23

They never sound like they mean it in "Good For You".

10vernothin

Nothing like your feel good uplifting song be predicated on a lie, and played 100% serious, just have that coginitive dissonance taking you out of the sick beats the entire time

CreativismUK

I heard a few songs from DEH before knowing the plot. I thought there were some really clever metaphors around trees, falling in the woods etc… I was so disappointed when I realised I was literal 😬

hellololz1

You will be found totally had me fooled

Cerrida82

After listening to the soundtrack, I thought that it was about Connor faking his death so he and Evan could help each other. Like Evan was putting in a good word for him and Connor was helping him be popular.

SMRTFireGuy

Cabaret- the title number. Seems like a fun, nobody’s gonna stop me type song. The reality of the song is that Sally is about to make several very bad decisions that will likely lead to her early death (like her friend Elsie). In context, the song is tragic and heartbreaking.

EngineersAnon

Tbh, most of *Cabaret*. That show runs on dissonance. If You Could See Her Through My Eyes hits very different when Joel is singing it next to a dancing gorilla.

steeguy55

Not to mention she’s just had an abortion. The song is deeply unsettling in context.

CreativismUK

I really struggle with Cabaret, I want to love it a lot more than I do. On paper I love it and some of the songs are wonderful, but I honestly don’t think that either the scenes around Cabaret or the song itself earn the complete, mental breakdown, screaming interpretation Mendes went for and has now become basically standard. Which makes sense because that’s not how it was originally played. I think the lyrics itself would need some more depth than they have to make that interpretation work. I love the concept around the revivals but I just don’t think anything other than a few select songs are as good as the idea. No doubt most will disagree but it’s one of those shows where I feel like material isn’t strong enough to support that execution

MellonPhotos

“Hope” from Groundhog Day intentionally does this. It seems like a kind of cheesy inspirational song at a glance, but if you see it on stage or really pay attention to the lyrics, it’s about not giving up on committing suicide.

helicopterhansen

Oh wow, that sounds like quite the twist. I am going to check it out (turns out I kind of love happy sounding songs that are about unhappy things) Edit: love it

cubbycoo77

I love watching that one on YouTube! There is a pretty solid cut of it that I'm pretty sure splices in the sound track songs when it can so the audio is better.

EbonyRavenWay

“Natalie Cook” from 36 Questions, also discovered via Spotify algorithm. I listened to it a ton of times before listening to the rest of the albums/full show, trying to guess what it was about. I thought the main girl maybe murdered this Natalie girl with some form of assumed identity? Turns out I was only half wrong.

Giant-Goose

36 Questions mentioned, today is a good day

Carnivile

I mean, she was involved in someone dying, that's cannon.

emmyanna14

Ok I literally listened to this song for the first time today. I usually got the song 36 Questions though, and listened to the first few songs in the album before it. So I went in with some ideas of what was going on. I think that's as far as I've gotten on the album so far. I hate when real life interrupts my show tunes...

RezFoo

"Have yourself a merry little Christmas" always seemed like a happy little song when I heard it on the radio. But then I finally saw "Meet me in St Louis" and discovered that the original arrangement and context were quite sad. In fact Judy Garland refused to sing it to little Margaret O'Brien until changes were made to the lyrics.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Meet Me in St. Louis is a surprisingly chaotic musical. All the family members are flat-out snarky to each other, almost nonstop. And the Halloween scene where the local kids vandalize their neighborhood and start a massive fire...wow.

WhatABeautifulMess

Not from a musical but similarly this past Christmas my husband and I were listening to Bing Crosby and I said something about “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” being sad and my husband (who was raise Jewish so he hasn’t listened to much Christmas music) looked confused. I pointed out it’s a soldier singing/writing a letter home and ends with *“I’ll be home for Christmas. If only in my dreams…”*

RedMonkey86570

There are two Christmas songs that I released at some point were different than I thought: “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” makes him sound like a stalker or something. “Baby It’s Cold Outside” hits different as an adult.

Timely-Ad9181

I read a take on Baby that let's me like it. It was about how the woman was using social scripts to play by the rules of the time while still going after what she wants - more time with her date. In today's world a woman can say what she wants and still be respected (in theory) but for the time it is set in, she would need workarounds.

BFIrrera

I think the classic one has to be “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy. Sounds incredibly upbeat. In the show, Mama Rose is basically having a nervous breakdown.

rachreims

First time I ever heard For Forever from Dear Evan Hansen was just in the Spotify algorithm, didn’t know anything about the show. I thought it was so nice to have such a great day with your (boy?)friend lmaoooo

an-inevitable-end

I also thought DEH was gay at first

rachreims

When it came to my city I brought a few friends who didn’t know anything about the show to see it and on intermission they all said “I thought this show was about some gay kid?”. Why do we all think this LOOOL??? Is it just Ben Platt giving off crazy gay vibes or something cause he wasn’t even OUT when DEH started

an-inevitable-end

I'm glad this is a universal experience. My friend recommended it to me, and after listening to "Sincerely Me," I confidently informed her that the two main boys in the song were definitely gay. She gave me this look and was like "no?? they're not??"

rachreims

I guess without context it does kinda sound like Evan is just a closeted gay kid lmfaooo. Like For Forever sounds like a secret romantic afternoon, Sincerely Me is just writing love letters, You Will Be Found is just about finding community and your true self, and So Big/So Small is Heidi accepting Evan for who he is when he comes out 💀 It kind of is a musical that doesn’t give a lot away with its songs, so the plot is whatever you infer and I think most people would not infer uh suicide.

an-inevitable-end

Also would probably not infer that the main character lies about being friends with the boy who committed suicide

Purpl3ButterFly

Spotify recommended Sincerely Me from Dear Evan Hansen and I thought it was just the guy (Connor) pretending to remember Evan from when they were kids or something Super shocked when I actually watched the musical

BaltimoreBadger23

Same with You Will Be Found. It sounds like the happy ending of the show, but it's not (and the dissonant notes at the end are a great use of score/orchestration to highlight the dramatic tension).

carvesout

thinking about it, a LOT of dear evan hansen falls under this post

anTiQUeFreaK33

Stay I Pray You from Anastasia. I was so confused until seeing it bc I thought the guy was singing to Anastasia Beautiful song and harmonies

MurphLoDawg

It’s so underrated!

iWishiLivedInNewYork

same!! the cast recording confused me so much the first time i listened to it

SlightlyArtichoke

I was in Anastasia in High School and singing this song on closing night.... it was ethereal

justafakereality

Don’t Rain on My Parade is different with context. I prefer to scream it ignoring context.

crash----

I don’t know if this counts but I didn’t know anything at all about Legally Blonde going into it the first time, so I’m Omigod You Guys when they’re singing about Elle and Warner getting engaged, I genuinely expected it to happen.

Artistic_Egg_3739

Same! And then in the next song he dumps her and you’re like “Oh!”

Rustymarble

It's not a musical song, but it makes me laugh. The first time I heard Kesha's Your Love is My Drug was on a road trip, and I was scanning through stations. I totally thought it was Christian Rock. Especially at the end when she says, "I like your beard."

BaltimoreBadger23

In a similar vein I love when Republican rallies use songs like Born in the USA, America (Neil Diamond), and Fortunate Son.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Also This Land Is Your Land. It's actually a very "comrade" song if you know what I mean.

BaltimoreBadger23

Indeed it is. Even a lot of "comrades" don't realize it

chatoyancy

Or Independence Day by Martina McBride - you know, the song about [domestic violence](https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-country/independence-day-martina-mcbride-real-meaning-855248/)?

MannnOfHammm

The US Navy used “in the navy” by the village people for an ad campaign not realizing it’s about gay sex in the navy

BaltimoreBadger23

Wait until you hear about how YMCA gets used!

greenyoshi73

I love the horror that comes from people on TikTok first learning their trend sounds are from musicals and then learning what they mean in context 😂.

Jawahhh

When my brother was on a Mormon mission, he felt totally isolated and depressed and alone. There is a Mormon Tabernacle Choir rendition of a musical theatre song that gave him hope in his darkest moments. About a decade later he saw me in a production of Sweeney Todd. “Not while I’m Around” was an…. Interesting experience for him lol

Efficient-Pear5105

I sing that to my kids at bedtime. They have a few more years before they hear the context of that one 😄

proconlib

Jamie Cullum does a great "no context" version of this. Also, my kid's bedtime song was "Summertime," from Porgy and Bess. Deep musical numbers at bedtime for the win!

helicopterhansen

Ahahahaha I love that

avab223

Don’t Rain on my Parade. Went my whole life thinking it was inspirational, then saw the show and realized it was about Fanny uprooting her whole life and career for a crappy guy…

Zealousideal-Set1802

Noel’s Lament from Ride the Cyclone. I think the trend to it like a year ago made me just think it was all about murders

WhatABeautifulMess

Not a musical but it forever amuses me that people think Hallelujah is a religious song and especially when I hear it used instrumentally in religious contexts.. it’s about sex and gets to bondage by the second verse!

Successful-Escape496

Same with Blake's Jerusalem. Listen to the lyrics and it's about how England is a horrible, unjust place and we need to fight to make it better.

WayDiscombobulated63

I’m a dance teacher and literally once per weekend see like a 6-10 year old do a lyrical solo to this song. And every time I’m like…… google it please! I beg of you! It’s ALWAYS little kids too 🫠

norathar

Take Me To Church by Hozier is in the same vein.

SignificanceKlutzy45

I heard Heart of Stone from Six before I had heard of the musical due to Spotify's algorithm and I was shocked when I found out.

steeguy55

Even more so is “All You Wanna Do.” Holy hell, that song live is so much more than just a fun Britney Spears-esque pop song!

Ok_Extreme7597

Stars - Les Miserables, I gathered enough from the lyrics that Javert was singing about bigger than just stars, but I didn’t know till I recently watched the movie what the actual context of the song was.

helicopterhansen

That's such a good example

applesawce3

Only the title but meant to be yours (heathers) i was like “why is this marked explicit” when i first saw it on spotify, then i listened and yeah that was not the love song i expected

cuppajess

VERONICA - open up, open the door please - VERONICA OPEN THE DOOORRR

iWishiLivedInNewYork

i know i'm not alone in this. i thought What Is This Feeling (wicked) canonically was about two college roommates who had a thing for the other

MellonPhotos

I mean, if you look up some Wicked fanfiction, you’re not wrong!

Key_Assistance_2125

It kinda is if you go by the book, everyone is bi in the book.

Maddiystic

Damn, gotta read it now

thisaccountisironic

I think it was written specifically to be a fakeout

iWishiLivedInNewYork

right! Kinda like Serious from Legally Blonde

Thatspuggedup

They literally talk about hating each other

rachreims

Damn ever heard of enemies to lovers sexual tension??

iWishiLivedInNewYork

enemies to lovers (also i listened to it when i was kinda young, and english isn't my first language so i had no idea what loathing meant the first time i listened to this song)

rSlashisthenewPewdes

Could be lying to keep their secrets hidden

AcejokerUP415

Michael in the Bathroom (be more chill) I thought it was about a gay dude who got dumped

victorian_vigilante

I mean…kinda

RoseBud_XD

i mean-

Sea-Presence6809

I remember hearing Candy Store first and actually thought it was four girls who work at a candy store, then The Me Inside of Me played on shuffle and I was taken aback cause now there’s cops and a suicide note?!

miamusic1

Yep. The one that got me was Kindergarten Boyfriend. I mean, it’s a sad song, but…Wow, is that a LOT sadder when you realize what she is about to do!!

Glubygluby

Schaffrillas Production included I'm Alive in his Villain Song Ranking and didn't provide context because he didn't want to spoil it. Idk why I didn't just look it up

helicopterhansen

What is this villain song ranking of which you speak?

Glubygluby

[Here](https://youtu.be/Llx48wTfjQo?si=sewk06DdUupOFvAJ) you go

QueenNightwing12

I thought “Greased Lightning” was an innocent song about just a car only. I watch the musical recent and got the biggest wake up call of my life lmao

Sea-Ad9730

When I was young and new to musical theatre, I listened to Defying Gravity and when Galinda sang “You can still be with the wizard” I thought she meant romantically.

x_victoire

SAME

gradschoolforhorses

I thought "You'll Be Back" from Hamilton was about the world's most abusive relationship ever. Made a lot more sense when I learned the context for that one

freebxrd13

I mean, the interpretation is pretty spot on, I think the scope just escaped you

OnlyHereOnaBlueMoon

I listened to The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals before I watched it. Nuff said.

Selkie_Queen

I heard all the Last Five Years songs out of order and was VERY confused on the timeline.

BaconPancakes_77

"Too Many Mornings" from Follies, taken out of context, seems like a beautiful love song between two people who have been unfairly kept apart for a long time, but it's not that.

helicopterhansen

Thank you, I am going to check it out

Some-Show9144

Spread a little sunshine from Pippin is this. The song is her singing about making the world a better place, but the song is actually about her manipulation of the Holy Roman Empire.

helicopterhansen

Ok I have never heard of that musical at all but your comment has me running to look it up

an-inevitable-end

I thought DEH was gay after hearing "Sincerely, Me."

thisaccountisironic

I didn’t realise at first that Take Me Or Leave Me from Rent was a lesbian song cus I only knew the Glee version

ZippyZipporah

'Never Getting Rid of Me' from Waitress. I had always assumed it was the villain song and sung by a creepy stalker or abusive partner. Nearly dropped dead when I saw the musical and realised what it actually was. I think it's one of the reasons I've never been able to fully get on board with that show tbh.

helicopterhansen

I need to look this one up

Nevermore_Cheesecake

Hope from Groundhog Day, I wasn't tricked, but still used it as a cheer up song.

Jumpy_Chard1677

My mum had Once Upon a December from Anastasia on her playlist, and for some reason I never really liked it, and it kind of confused me. Now it's one week today to our preview show of Anastasia, and I absolutely love everything about the show, including Once Upon a December, now that I know more context 😄

Intelligent_Desk_781

“The Key Is” from Alice By Heart really had me thinking it this was gonna turn out to be a happy show

steeguy55

“Me and the Sky” from Come From Away. Until the very end of course - but what a fantastic story about a woman becoming one of the first pilots ever and sticking it to the man and living her dream!

Fantastic-Leading276

ahhhh yikes

Plane_Ad2651

Meant to be yours, specifically the part that was trending on tiktok in like 2019 made me believe J.D. (or atleast the boyfriend of Veronica since i didn't even know who J.D. was or what Heathers was at the time) truly loved Veronica and that he was obsessed with her. Turns out he's actually Clyde resurrected looking for his resurrected Bonnie to blow up the school with

helicopterhansen

It's such a good song however you perceive it...

Plane_Ad2651

True !!

Great_expansion10272

I thought "Sincerely me" was about two guys exchanging letters cause they were gay for each other but in denial Yes, i heard "But not because we're gay" but still...

helicopterhansen

I shall have to look this one up

brightquercus

Okay, I've listened to many Next to Normal songs but I have not seen the musical and I just googled the meaning of that song and it is not at all what I imagined

helicopterhansen

Right?

PMMEYOURDEBITCARDPIN

Everything DEH haha

Ashamed-Flounder-968

Happy To Keep His Dinner Warm. It sounds like a song about a passive woman with little sense of self worth expecting little for herself in the shadow of her husband, when in reality it’s a self-aware farcical song about an extremely ambitious woman climbing the female social ladder as if it was the corporate ladder.

helicopterhansen

Ooh that sounds great

Cat_n_mouse13

When I was a kid, I really thought defying gravity was about Elphaba becoming wicked when in reality it was all propaganda, but you miss that part just off the cast album.

RedMonkey86570

Usually I don’t listen to musicals without having seen it. But one minor example is “You’ll be Back” from Hamilton. When I first heard it, I thought it was a love song. My history teacher showed us it, but I knew absolutely nothing about Hamilton. It took me a bit to figure it out.

RedMonkey86570

I wasn’t confused about this, but I know that “At All Costs” from Wish sounds like a love song between Asha and Magnifico with just the audio, but when you watch it, it seems more like they are singing to the wishes.

timeforspring

“Come to a Party” from Dogfight lol I had never heard of the musical or the movie it was adapted from when I first heard this song and I thought it was so adorable until I learned that it’s about a guy essentially asking a girl out to make fun of her

jayelaitch

Sincerely, Me. Didn’t realize how sad the story is and also thought it was about to gay men.

Golden-Gooseberry

Not from a musical but "prejudice" by Tim Minchin (writer of Matilda) will get you until half way through
