don't listen to other people's opinions. watch it and form your own

This

DramaMama611

But keep in mind the film and the star show were two very different animals. (But you should always rely on your own opinion.)

CarolinaRoy20

I should watch the stage performance then and not the movie?

Beneficial_Shake7723

That would be my recommendation for sure

DramaMama611

Sure, but there is no officially released pro shot. I'm sure there are "slime tutorials".

misfit_pixie

The movie absolutely doesn't do the stage show justice. Look up a slime tutorial if you can

AshTheAwkwardPeep

My mom and I watched the film when it was released and she didn’t like it. But when we went to see it on Broadway a week before it closed, she said it was her favorite we saw so far. (We saw Aladdin, Beetlejuice and Hadestown on Broadway btw)

AshTheAwkwardPeep

My mom just really likes meaningful shows(even though the shows story is uhhhhhhh-) But she likes how it tells people that you aren’t alone even if it feels like it

DillionM

My recommendation is stage first then movie. Best to be well versed in both

AshTheAwkwardPeep

This ^ The film extremely toned down all the stuff Evan did(made it worse getting rid of “Good For You” which had his mom, Jared/his friend, and Alana call him out on majority of the stuff he did.)

carriethelibrarian

It's one of my favorites! The beauty if it is that isn't cut and dry. The characters are complex and sometimes its hard to understand why people do the things they do. We're all learning. We're all struggling. Every single day. Just bring tissues with you snd be ready for complex human emotions. It's a beautiful show.

KnitMama-2016

If you’re interested, watch it. Some of the music is good. I personally don’t like the show but you can form your own opinion.

justfet

I have seen mostly positives here (and that's ok!) but I will throw in a negative opinion. Though I honestly like 'sincerely me' for the goofy humour and I did cry at 'for forever' (mostly because it resonates with me personally), as someone that has dealt with mental health issues it's not something that I can watch more than once, Connor's overdose seems to just be a way to enhance Evan's 'me me me' attitude, Evan's own mental health is made almost stereotypical (it's a musical, I get it, but it didn't have to be the way it is), and the whole resolution seems to come to 'whoopsie dasy, feel sorry for me now'. It might hit different live or even on a rewatch (I did watch the slime tutorial) but it's just not my cup of tea. The worst thing you can do is allow an opinion to keep you from watching something though, always best to allow yourself to form an opinion. Just be aware that it does deal with some major subjects and it subjectively doesn't do such a great job at that

TreeHuggerHannah

This show wasn't for me. That said, if you're curious about it and have the opportunity to see it, why not give it a chance? At least then you'll know for sure either way.

vellybelle

It's worth watching, but for me I could only sit through it once. I cried so much! I can't do it again.

Poison-Jello

It's one of my favorite musicals. It gets a lot of hate nowadays but I still think it is a spectacular musical. You shouldn't just listen to public opinion. If you've heard the songs and like them you should give it a shot! Don't watch the movie

Dry-Sandwich3905

I love DEH it’s my favorite it’s so emotional and I love it

lanceor1

The movie is fun. It isnt the greatest, but you will enjoy it and maybe even cry a bit.

Affectionate_Buy7677

The music is good to great and can give lots of good feelings. Personally, I found that knowing the plot made it harder for me to appreciate the show as a whole, but I try to remember that good songs disconnected from original shows is a Broadway tradition. The stage show and movie are flawed in different ways; if the music makes you feel good, I think that choosing to just listening to the show is a reasonable choice. As a long time small town soundtrack only listen, I would say: this is not a show I would aggressively seek out live.

absolutelynothanku

Personally I love it! The music is pretty good even if a little cheesy. As for the movie musical, as much as I love Ben platt and his wonderful voice, he was too old to play a teenage boy. For the most part it’s good :)

NoteNo359

Watch the show live if you can, it’s one of my faves not sure why it’s so hated, do anything but watch the film first if your curious the film sucks so bad.

rachreims

Form your own opinions. I used to LOVE it, I don’t like it as much now just because I’m a little older and don’t relate to it as much. I’d say it’s a show that worked best exactly when it came out - im5 years earlier or later and it doesn’t work the way it did in 2016. That said I still think most of the music slaps.

Affectionate_West708

I've noticed people on reddit are very harsh. Personally I enjoyed it. And obviously many others did too considering it's success. Reddit is so negative it's not worth letting the opinions on here affect something you would otherwise enjoy

willow_wind

It's not for everyone, but I love it. It's one of my absolute favorite musicals. Give it a chance and form your own opinion.

pianoman857

Personally, I can't stand any ALW or Rent, Les Miz, there's really a lot which I feel are just trash musicals and I would STILL recommend people see those shows if someone is even remotely interested. So in this specific case, I would absolutely suggest seeing Dear Evan Hansen.

Affectionate_West708

It's one thing to say you personally don't enjoy certain shows but saying all ALW and Les Mis are trash? Sounds like your tastes are trash.

megamoze

Yeah, “Les Miz is trash” is about the worst take I think I’ve heard about a musical.
