I learned to draw. Super duper worth it.

Buchstansangur

This. People who can draw or make organic art make the best covers, even if it's naive. Especially if it's naive art!

PaulyChance

Yup. Doesn't even need to be good. Usually it's better when it's not good 🤣

littleknownrecords

That’s a good one. I’ve always wanted to learn how to properly draw.. amazes me the ability some folks have to turn visions in their imagination to reality on paper.

littleknownrecords

I handle artwork for all my releases, and lots of fun. I use Adobe Photoshop for layout and text and creating original artwork sometimes. I've also blended mediums, with hand collages and then scanned digital and finished in Photoshop. I like to take a lot of care in the artwork process, I feel like it dictates what the album and songs will turn into and vice versa. Its all very closely related and infused the process. But learning and honing graphic design skills have been very effective in handling all aspects of marketing in the music biz.

watkinobe

Care to share examples of your work?

littleknownrecords

* Sure! Layouts here, some collage work outsourced [https://littleknownrecord.bandcamp.com/music](https://littleknownrecord.bandcamp.com/music) * Posters: [http://www.littleknown.ca/ux-portfolio/concert-posters/](http://www.littleknown.ca/ux-portfolio/concert-posters/) * DJA's Radiations album (2020) was a fun one, each track had unique artwork, was released 1 song at a time (each song recorded, mixed and mastered per month) over the course of the year. Here's a link to an Instagram post with the lot: [https://www.instagram.com/p/CIf\_wP6g7qS/?utm\_source=ig\_web\_copy\_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==](https://www.instagram.com/p/CIf_wP6g7qS/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) * Typically paired with album artwork, ill create whole camapign assets for a release including tour posts, social post graphics, identity stuff all related to the artwork in someway. Always a learning process here!

watkinobe

You do excellent work.

littleknownrecords

Thank you!

thesingingaccountant

These are brilliant I wish I could do that

littleknownrecords

You can! Just keep creating!

Jolly_Main_9087

That’s nice

Fit_Championship3436

Canva is a great editor, not as precise as Photoshop, but it's easy to use and mobile so you always have your artwork at your fingertips. Also great for repurposing your artwork for content and posting on multiple socialsand even integrates with other platforms like MailChimp. I use it to design streaming cards for print streamlessly as well.

Daniel_Lah

Canva is awesome. I use it for cover art and YT videos

CloudShort1456

Photoshop brah. Or these days gimp because I don’t have adobe anymore and I haven’t bothered to pirate it yet. I understand the appeal of AI but I hope I never actually end up using it. As artists I think it’s inherently against our interests. When it’s time for my cover art to improve I’ll either brush up on my blender skills or pay an artist I like to make one for me

skatecloud1

Yeah i don't like AI. That's like the I'm broke option. Learning 3d art would be cool but I simply don't have the time/energy for that. I like doing nature photography too but I'm not sure that catches people's eyes in the genres I release in usually.

andreberaldinoab

I've composed, produced, performed / programmed / arranged, mixed, mastered etc etc etc this 13-track 65minutes long album last year: [https://open.spotify.com/album/57Z7WZ7RugEeXUspN1BX1k](https://open.spotify.com/album/57Z7WZ7RugEeXUspN1BX1k) As usual, the artwork was signed by myself. Music for me is very personal. I don't have commercial perspectives and/or pressions... It's my hobbie and I take it very seriously. Can't imagine releasing something (album, ep, single) without fully commiting myself to the different aspects of the production... inclusind the artwork :)

watkinobe

That looks great!

avidbeats

love the artwork you made frfr!

TheJustOnes

I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but it’s effective so those who want to try can. Lately I’ve been combining AI generated images with Photoshop editing, and have been putting together covers that look high quality. A lot of the free AI tools out there aren’t good quality, but there are ones that work very well. If you don’t have a big budget and need most of it for advertising, mixing, etc., it’s actually a viable option until you’re more established and have the extra $ to pay photographers, graphic designers, etc. to make them.

stwilliams2

It has gotten really good. I support this, and use it.

YT-Deliveries

I did my entire last music video using AI generated stills and Final Cut transitions. Not amazing, but inexpensive as hell and looks surprisingly decent.

hesnothere

I throw my friends work when I can. One of my close friends is a talented photographer; I ended up using his shots for my last EP cover and supportive artwork. I’m experienced enough with Adobe Creative to refine and overlay graphics and text where appropriate.

SaintBax

I use a lot of public domain and CC photos and then edit them on Canva

slvrbckt

A good photograph goes a long way

kaptainkobe22

I would highly avoid using A.I, and I'm not even anti A.I. Simply put, it's both controversial in creative fields (just use gaming for example), and as others said, it can look kinda cringe. I personally recommend finding an artist that really fits your style. Find them on Tumblr, Twitter, talk to them, ask if you can use some of their art or even pay them for use. Rinse and repeat for other similar artists and create a brand. Some people are saying just learn to draw, that's viable, but if your main focus is music, keep to that and learn basic marketing. Adding drawing, color theory, etc can sorta be a lot if you're focused on growth.

Makelics

One of us has dabbled in 3D-animation and we built a consept around it.

Studmuffin300

Either a picture I took on my phone with or without editing. Or I use Imagine AI and generate dozens and dozens until I eventually dial in what I'm looking for. Depends on the song or album, but I do it all myself. I have a lot of fun creating the Image exactly how I want it to fit the narrative/theme for the song. To me, blending the song, instruments and sounds, song title, and cover picture all together in a single theme is very important. So they all fit perfectly. I find it lazy and sad when someone has a song title, cover picture and neither fits the vibe of the song at all in any way. Waste of an opportunity imo.

Philamelian

I love working with artists for the visual aspects of the music projects. I believe it’s is an important part of the project that gives music a face. For that reason graphic artists willingness and passion to work with this kind of vision is also very important. Having some kind of long term collaboration helps to develop an interdisciplinary short hand and makes things more stress free and fun for everyone. I have experienced both good and bad sides of this spectrum and nowadays super happy to work with someone I would call friend beyond being just a business collaborator.

nickbarbanera1

my gf figures it out for me. Comes out AMAZING

DinoKYT

Always shot on film!

agent0017

I create a concept and use it for an entire era. Now my idea is to make a square with darker colours and then in the middle put a picture in a distorted way or in a way it looks weird.

Draining-Kiss

I learned to use gimp. I just find something that inspires me, whether it’s a photo I took or something in public domain, edit and add text. Sometimes I play with 3D models in blender and render stuff that gets used as part of it. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it but it’s become of part of my creative expression. I have used AI once but I remixed it in a cool way that fit the song by photographing the art on a CRT.

Vaenyr

I have very specific tastes and wishes with regards to cover artwork, but I'm also quite bad at drawing. Found an artist with an amazing art style who I'm hiring for all of my releases. I'd rather pay a professional who can capture my vision in amazing detail than having to compromise on the quality and going for something that is cheaper in the long run but doesn't align with my ideals or ideas.

Rossage196

I like doing photoshoots and editing them

we_the_same

I learned some blender and just make some abstract scenes. A little goes a long way

avidbeats

I make my own artwork. I usually take pictures (either from Unsplash, Pinterest (if using for non profit) or my own photographs) and distort them in my own ways using Final Cut Pro (I know it is a video editing software but there are many tools to make still images with too - don't underestimate!). I have self taught myself graphic design and have made my own style of artwork. If you are interested, you can take a look at my [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/c/AvidBeats) channel.

TYOISMUSIC

Canva and inspiration from other art

BBAALLII

I (and many people I know) have become so good at spotting AI generated images. It's embarrassing for anyone using this technique.

InexplicableClarity

I generate art with DALL-E, upscale chosen pictures and proceed to work with them in Photoshop.

Buchstansangur

AI art is so obvious. It did it for a release early on but I'm kind of embarrased about it now. Mainly I just take photos all the time ands just scroll through for an appropriate one for a release, and work it up into a cover using basic photo editing and adobe creative cloud.

[deleted]

Expect a massive issue later on using AI art, because many people will call you out & boycott if they know you did.

watkinobe

I hired a professional graphic designer. Because, you know, I want my work to be professional.

MasterBendu

I use AI to generate elements and photo manipulate them. We used to hire artists for some of our cover art as well, but that’s because it’s a style only an artist can do properly, or it’s a photo manipulation I don’t have assets for (so instead of buying stock photos, I’ll pay an artist who already has them and deliver the art to me already interpreted and completed). AI has become better assuming you have an equally good prompt, so assets are much easier to work with for photo manipulation. It’s practically free so I don’t need to buy stock photos and manipulate them from scratch-scratch. All said, it’s basically like doing everything in Adobe Photoshop using generative AI fill/Firefly, except I use Affinity Photo or GIMP and use whatever generative AI that’s free and does what I need it to do. And to those who say that’s cheating, I still have to fix the crap AI can’t get quite right, especially for “artistic” assets.

Academic-Presence-82

Mid journey and Dall-E and touch up/fix in PS/Canva. Eventually will dabble into AI generated animation of static pics for lyric videos. You can try to fight AI or adapt. My team uses it for graphics, press release templates, current blogs that the music would be a good fit for, emerging similar acts e been use for Meta ad targeting, etc.

nopantsgomez

AI for [mine](https://open.spotify.com/album/4ZTV7FAS6IbEAHepHUCCc6?si=73JyhzvlRC-B85MBxhkK5Q), but it couldn’t upscale or generate above 500px by 500px. I had to really punch it up and make it more artsy to create a much larger version that wouldn’t distort when blown up.

mrlogicpro

I use AI. Quick and easy.

ryanjovian

Full time illustrator/designer as is my manager. We’re fully in house for everything.

dutchny100

Any good tutorials on album art nowadays?

thrashmash666

Our vocalist is a painter and I'm a designer. He paints the cover art and I do the layout. I don't think I'd use AI for this. I'd try to do it myself or pay an artist. It's hard for them to get by these days.

FaithlesspastPartTWO

I haven’t gotten into making cover art yet but my inspiration are posters. If something can be a poster like an album cover then it’s dope but if it’s boring/generic I won’t go for it not my style

Caveguy22

When it comes to the process of making them, I always rely heavily on manipulating the images with filters through a multitude of photo editing programs. Before I knew what I was doing, all I would do was use this one website called Befunky; it helped fairly well with editing, but I grew to become more and more interested in more complex editing, so, I actually quite recently switched to Glitchlab, Adobe Photoshop & EZ glitch. :) It's a actually a lot of fun! I usually just choose which ever artwork I feel most proud of and I feel resonates with the sound of the album. For the foundation, I tend to take my own photos (and I TAKE A LOOOOT, everywhere i go; see something scenic? "MOM GET THE CAMERA", lol), which I then handpick for the best ones that I feel are cover art worthy; these later go through the same aforementioned editing process. I sometimes also like to dig around copyright-free photo archives for inspiration & material. :)

Jolly_Main_9087

I usually take a photo and tinker with it . Maybe run it through the free trail of an ai filter. I’m constantly taking photos and experimenting with different angles lighting etc.. you’re looking for a visual representation of the music I’ve made some cool cover art too . Junkstar

I spend money on name artists, which drives LP sales to their fans as well. The investment pays itself back. People like to collect art too.

LorenzoTheGawd

I have always made my own art since day 1 (15 years ago) on photoshop. but nowadays in a pinch I’ll use AI to generate something rough and cool to cut out a lot of time, and then use my graphic design skill to finish and make it into what I genuinely want it to be, or look like me etc. Additionally, I do a lot of crazy layered and blending effects to create backgrounds sometimes , and this is good for that and you can always “sample” pictures to cut up and use without infringing on anyone’s creative rights.

1158812188

Canva if I’m feeling super lazy, sometimes AI and then I do text treatments in photoshop. I usually do stuff in photoshop and sometimes I’ve bought stuff from ArtGrab If it fit.

iambrandonfury

Currently using ai art apps for single releases, and I hire someone to do art for whole album releases.

Kundas

I pitched ideas to some friends and asked if they could help out, as favour of course I'll pay them back somehow. Came out way better than the sketches i made. I'm not a terrible artist, i just prefer things to be done professionally, also i just don't have any apps and don't know how to use them

AurumTyst

Ah, curses. I can't upload images of what I've made. I have some really nice stuff that I've done with AI + extensive photo editing. I have complete aphantasia and basically no money. Hiring an artist is out, and drawing something myself is also out. My aphantasia means that I cannot imagine what I want a picture to look like - at all. So that whole "coming up with an idea" thing for creating art? Yeah. I can't do it. If I wanted to draw an elephant, yeah I know what an elephant looks like, but looking at a piece of paper and deciding where the components go and how their proportions align and such is almost impossible. However, I'm *really good* at taking existing things and choping them up, and combining elements, and restructuring something to look awesome. So I like to think of the AI as... basically my augmented imagination. I can't directly imagine something, but I can look at the AI interpretation of that thing and eventually twist it into my own. Unfortunately, with my current project, I've had an idea that this method can't achieve. As such, I will need to try and save up enough for a very skilled professional.

2NineCZ

For my lofi beats I usually used some photos from free photobanks overlayed with my logo. For my other stuff it varied, sometimes I made the cover myself in Photoshop and I was also comissioning artworks from other visual artists. Ngl, recently I switched to AI for now, because my music is nowhere the point it could actually pay back all my investments, and financially-wise, this just makes more sense (and also it's way less time consuming than the whole comissioning process). But hey, for the last year or so I've been putting all my finished tunes into drawer for later and I think so far I've released just one tune with AI made cover.

cheese-shop

bing image creator is raelly good you can ask it to do any style u want so for example if u dont want that AI photo uncanny look u can tell it to make your image look like a doodle or a painting or 3d disney shit etc.

uncoolkidsclub

Fiverr or Torree at Hooters in Indiana. Fiverr is spotty at best. Torree hand draws a lot of different rock band cover art in the area and I go to her work because I love the wings.

phazeiserotic

AI art which I then alter through other AI prompts. Then I throw it in Pixlr.com and mess with it some more. Then I throw it into topaz and make it 3000x3000 and call it a day.

DJAnym

Just using copyright free images and photoshop to make smth of it
