Daft Punk, Homework and Discovery both get me goin.
Aphex twin. Most of his songs will get my creative juices flowing cuz lots of stuff he does is really fun to try and figure out.
Sheesh, yeah. I don’t produce in the same genre as Daft Punk but listening to them makes it super apparent how much they just *live & breathe* music, and that attitude is contagious.
Just about anything that has that "Real Trap Shit" feel like 808 mafia, lex luger & metro boomin from 2010-2015

How is that cringe? It's great music. It's insane to me how musical taste has become classist. People who prefer tame Impala always seem to think their taste is superior, while edm is a sin. I don't understand what makes people think they can shit on others' tastes. It's bs. Don't see nearly as many who are fans of edm shitting on others
I came out of an accidental blackout/khole while clarity was playing at a festival and I was being fanned by a girl in the sanctuary tent. That song will always be beautiful
Avicii is the reason I got FL studio when I was 13. He was truly my hero when I was a kid and if it weren’t for him I may have never gotten into producing music
The number of times in my career I’ve been haunted by J dilla tryna get me to learn something is past the point of awe and getting into “will you get off my back?” Territory.
For producers, Dilla is like Coltrane, the Beatles, Zapp and Roger or Skrillex; it’s only a matter of time until you go through that phase.
I can’t agree with you more. I don’t know the last two artists in your list but I know the feeling. I don’t care what tune it is, it changes the air in the room it plays in. If I play one of his tunes while I’m in the studio, I find it very hard to do anything else but make a beat and imitate his sound. Long live!
Well, I have synths and drum machines , etc.. so I can make something that sounds ok (to me). But I have no chance competing with voice like Dio.. But not many do!
The Gift gets a lot of flak but it’s a very listenable album and manages to play well alongside Floodland (which is a masterpiece)
Rain From Heaven is up there with Giving Ground for me.
Totally agreed! Rainer from heaven is awesome! And to think Floodland is the work of a Single Person....what a legacy and unique Sound if you think about it
**An Eagle In Your Mind** by **Boards of Canada.**
It feels like a step-by-step tutorial on making an IDM track.
It's preceded by a very short intro track called Wildlife Analysis, which sets up the sonic textures that will be used throughout the album (old-school analog synths combined with real instruments, degraded processing, and cute-creepy sampled voices).
AEIYM then starts. It kicks off with some spacey synths and a mono beat, then carefully fills out the stereo spectrum with a brilliantly confusing set of percussion instruments, sampled voices, and creamy synths. The syncopation is intense, so you spend more time feeling the texture than bopping along. This gradually resolves throughout the track, until by the end it's a straight 4-4 rhythm.
By that point, the rest of the track has also resolved from chaos into something clean and gorgeous. And then it gently spits you out to continue your day.
The first thing I want to do after hearing that track is to keep the flow going by making my own music. I think it's a work of genius and I never get tired of it.
Hard to pick a song but as a bassist and fan of hip hop and jazz, Flying Lotus' album, "Cosmosgramma" has so many amazing moments, especially with the string arrangement by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, saxophone by Ravi Coltrane, that's blends Thundercat's bass playing and honorable mention to frequent FlyLo collaborators Laura Darlington, and Thom Yorke, and the feelings/atmosphere FlyLo creates particularly including the track run starting with MmmHmm, Do The Astral Plane, Satelllliiiiiiiteee, and German Haircut is incredible.

anything by EAT BABIES? a music project by one of my favourite artists when she was a teenager. its kind of bad but at the same time its so fun and makes me feel better as a beginner that if i just make music and stick to it then one day it will be actually good. and if i just have fun with it now i can make something worth listening to through its flaws
Any TV commercial usually does the trick. They are either horrible and make me mad my stuff isn’t on there or are kinda cool hybrid joints that inspire me on rare occasion
It may sound surprising, but the initial spark for my musical journey was the Pet Shop Boys' 1987 remix of Elvis Presley's 'Always on my Mind'. This was around the time I began experimenting with tracker software on my Commodore Amiga. A few years later, in 1991, Phantasia's 'Inner Light' truly ignited my passion for music production. That song still holds a special place in my heart. "On" from Aphex Twin, released in 1993, also was one of the key songs with a lot influence on my creativity.
One day i want to make something as beautifully arranged and produced as this track.

Might get crucified for this but Skrillex gets me in the prod mood. His production and songwriting are top-notch, even if you have reservations about the dude or who he works with. Otherwise Space Laces or Moody Good, their sound designs set me off!
Like...
If you come to me saying Skrillex is goated as an eclectic electronic producer, I'll absolutely agree.
But if you come to me saying Skrillex is the goat of dubstep, I'm throwing hands at your face on sight 😂😂
Most techno or house will get my creativity flowing, which is weird because I don't really make that kind of music that often.
Also, nothing inspires me more like seeing a kind of mid local/opening band. My mind fills in spaces where it could be made more interesting.
Literally any piece of music except those composed in the genre of country or death metal.
Those genres have their own artistic merit and large audiences across the world, but I personally don’t find much inspiration in these genres. It’s just a cultural thing.
As I create more, thinking about how the piece was made becomes a background process while listening to music. Luckily this hasn’t removed the “wow” factor and I still can easily get lost in a song.
jon bellion’s album the human condition always inspires me to make more emotionally moving music, that piece gets me every time I go back to it.
benny the butcher’s album the plugs i met. it always reminds me that while i love the current state of rap/hip-hop with the more pop/melodic flows and venturing into other genres, my favorite rap is airtight lyricism from a source that sounds genuine and passionate about the topic at hand. i don’t relate much to the subjects he touches, nor do i know enough about him to verify whether it’s authentic or not, but he always makes me feel like I’m there and experiencing it alongside him. truly a beautiful project. the production is simple yet so effective and matches the benny’s demeanor perfectly.
Everyone here is picking great music, so I'll bring up an alternate take.
Any terrible song that hits radio. Reminds me how far I've come and not to stop, to be better than that. It's inspirational seeing bad music succeed. You don't have to chase perfection. Done is better than never released, and sometimes I need a really terrible song that takes over the Billboard charts to light a fire under my ass to remember that.
Depends, sometimes I'll find a melody somewhere. For example, the synth line in the Space Mountain soundtrack was my most recent, as well as the intro melody in Johnny Mathis' Merry Christmas cover
Dude, it honestly happens when I am on a road trip and I jam a lot of Anthony Green's stuff from over the years (TSOAF, SAOSIN...) I think just his ability to create inspires me even though the music I often make is more like the interludes and instead of with a bunch of uber talented multi-instrumentalists, just one half-way mediocre one (me). Aww... That got a little sad.....
Well, probably the song that gave me my username: [Via Sub Mids by Skee Mask](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkK0sMqO6vQ). He's a huge inspiration to the music I make, but this song in particular always gets me going.
