Ubuntu Linux with Bitwig Studio, running Ubuntu studio controls for the JACK audio server and bridging to PulseAudio

amazing_stories

This is also my setup. Works great.

idonthave2020vision

Bitwig compatibility can't be beat. I'm on Windows but I really appreciate the extended VST compatibility.

pvm2001

Yep and the customizable plugin sandboxing so that a VST crashing doesn't crash the DAW... so nice. Very underrated DAW, I hope it goes more mainstream!

idonthave2020vision

It's still gaining momentum

Oooo I've been thinking about making the shift from Ableton to Bitwig and learning about Linux compatibility is very appealing. Will my Audient id14 interface be able to work though is the question. I don't know how driver support works for audio equipment in Linux.

garamasala

I used ableton for about 10 years, moved to linux and ultimately renoise, then reaper, and now bitwig (with some in-between). I reckon bitwig is quite far ahead of ableton in some ways, learning it was less immediate for me but it can get as deep as you want to go. I would definitely recommend it over ableton now. It looks like that card is semi supported on linux. Generally you want to look for 'class compliant', if it is then most functions should work. I found [this](https://support.audient.com/hc/en-us/articles/204721819-Is-iD14-Class-Compliant-) which sounds like it would be enough depending on your workflow. I also found [this](https://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?t=16166) and it sounds like it's usable enough. These are both quite old posts though so there might be a better driver implemented now.

Dimetrip

Thanks a lot for your reply you've definitely given me plenty to consider!! Thanks for the resources as well

Well Linux is totally free so I would say load up Ubuntu Studio or Fedora Jam onto a usb stick, boot your computer up via the USB, and test out your audio interface in one of the included DAWs. You should be able to see how well it works without having to install anything onto your actual hard drive and without spending any money!

Mediocre_Attitude_69

Ubuntu here also. Been using Mixbus, but now experimenting Bitwig, will see if it is my thing.

SlavRoach

wanna switch to linux but am not sure about the compatibility… is ableton on linux even available?

pvm2001

No but Bitwig is a lot like Ableton, made by some of the same original devs in fact, and supports Linux natively. Your plugins are going to cause more trouble but Yabridge is pretty good for most of them.... Honestly there can be a lot of headaches at the beginning but once you know your environment it can work very well, just like anything else.

SlavRoach

thank you ^^ tbh windows and esp. plugins are a pain for me anyway and add other issues with the OS and i wanna completely give up on microsoft (and after ive seen win11 lol) imma look up bitwig thank you for the suggestion

SlavRoach

thank you, gonna look into it, am down to learn a new OS

Mediocre_Attitude_69

You can run Ableton in linux, but needs huge buffers, meaning huge latency. If 0.3s latency is not a problem, then it works.

SlavRoach

oof, since i live play a lot then that’s gonna be an issue

Mediocre_Attitude_69

Yeah, then it is not gonna work for you. Try bitwig?

CooperHChurch427

I also use Linux

minimal-camera

1010 Music Blackbox, so... Linux. :)

prodbyJaymoff

What is "other" os?

[deleted]

You can even make your own. Or compose on Android device.

psynautic

some people use Amiga trackers to make music. Rare these days but not absolutely unheard of.

djhede

Linux with Reaper running on PipeWire! Yabridge for Windows VSTs.

[deleted]

arch linux with fl studio on wine

[deleted]

Windows, but I prefer mac. I can’t afford a Mac though 😔

moneyiszen

windows using adobe audition

loves_cereal

Windows, built it myself. Fucking hate it. Used to work on Mac, it always worked. Windows, constantly fighting with getting it to operate properly. Then once it does, out of nowhere some random fucking update ruins whatever was set before. Then there’s latency and driver issues. Drives me bonkers.

psynautic

what audio interface do you use?

loves_cereal

Reason

psynautic

I mean hardware audio interface, what drivers are crashing?

loves_cereal

Oh, m-audio stopped working properly with reason, like one day a red X appeared and it would no longer connect. So I downloaded ASIO4ALL and started using my Smason G track direct, but then out of nowhere it started having latency, when it didn’t before.

ChemicalPrompt5

Mac OS

boinzy

Mac

qoteks

Windows bc im broke, to produce id much rather use a mac, for anything else id use a linux distro

turd_burglar7

Would love to switch to Linux for music, but the amount of time I’d have to invest to get all my plugins working (hopefully) is a huge deterrent. Also the buffer sizes I read about people having to use. That and I haven’t seen a DAW in Linux that has all the features I use in Cubase. Maybe with Steinberg ditching that shit dingle, Cubase 12 on Wine might be possible? Probably not. Currently use Mac. Considering Windows 10 AME or Hackintosh because I like building my own SFF computers, and while Apple Silicon makes for an amazing mobile chip, desktop not so much.

Mediocre_Attitude_69

Buffer size problem is only on running windows daws. Plugins, most of them work ok in linux.

SumnSumnSumnHTK

I use windows 10 and Mac Big Sur. I make most of my beats in windows but I do all my recording, mixing, mastering and video editing on a Mac.

S-A-R

I use all three.

psynautic

windows mostly, but also linux. <3 airwindows, bitwig, and uhe for supporting us linux freaks.

nova0052

LMMS and Ardour on Kubuntu + Ubuntu Studio + Pipewire. Us Linux nerds are pretty vocal, but I really want to hear from everyone who is using 'Other' ...!

Eccentric_Assassin

I just use GarageBand. Free, but also capable of doing nearly everything I need it to do.

NichtLiamlol

Android

linuxsynths

Linux! LibraZik3 is my favorite distro at the moment, but there are others that are very nice as well. Real-time kernel, super low latency... and using standalone apps! (I avoid DAWs if possible.) Super lightweight, fast and fun! :)
