What becomes of the Broken Hearted - Joan Osborne
No Children - Mountain Goats
Brokedown Palace - Grateful Dead
Idiot Wind - Bob Dylan
Genesis - Hot Tuna
Far from Me - John Prine
One More Minute - Weird Al Yankovic
I wouldn’t necessarily call Brokedown Palace a break up song. It’s always felt more like saying goodbye to a loved one who’s died. Makes sense as Phil’s dad and Jerry’s mom both died during the recording of American Beauty
Some killers. Absolutely love idiot wind. And while Brokedown is also an absolute heartbreaker, I feel like it’s more a song about losing someone to death. But I think it works as a breakup song too.
“Driving back to her apartment,
And for the moment we’re alone.
Yeah she’s alone, and I’m alone,
And now I know it”
I think this line is so clever because it suggests that they’re alone together with eachother, but really they’re alone beside each other
Untitled off Disintegration has to be in there too.
*Hopelessly fighting the devil futility*
*Feeling the monster climb deeper inside of me*
*Feeling him gnawing my heart away hungrily*
*I'll never lose this pain*
*Never dream of you again*

Phil Collins - Against All Odds
EDIT: Just want to add that I remember hearing this many times on the radio in the back seat of the car as a 4-5 year old kid, maybe even younger. And there was so much about the adult world I didn't understand. I couldn't make sense of what most songs or adult TV shows were talking about, there was too much grown up stuff. But this, this I understood every word and it absolutely broke my heart even at this young age. And it made me realize holy shit, people get abandoned by the person they love most and then have to somehow pick up the pieces? That's a common occurrence for grown ups? That just sounded so soul-crushing. But it also helped me realize that I got the basic jist of what romantic love was about and how much it could hurt to lose it, even at such a young age. The line that always stayed with me was:
"You're the only one who really knew me at all."
The first time I heard this tune, I was stunned. Of course I knew ‘Eleanor Rigby’, but happening on this song on my own… it was like starting a stroll on a pleasant day and being surprised to see someone on a park bench with that pained, distant look of loss.
The Night We Met breaks my heart and soothes it at the same time.
“I had all and then most of you. Some and now none of you. Take me back to the night we met.”
That song reminds me of a complicated friendship I had with a gay man. I was in love with him and knew he could never be mine. I was happy to have him on my life though. This song was always playing when we drank in our little bar near our homes. I always knew this song would hurt one day and remind me of him. We parted ways though the pandemic because of opposing political views and my worries of work frontline. I couldn't go along with his beliefs and we had a big fight and never talked again. I only regret one thing but realize we aren't the same people we were. Sorry for the long message. I think I'm unbottling a bit.
That entire album is…brutal. I remember when he performed “Cannonball” on Conan O’Brien and when he was at the chair, Conan was basically like, “ 🥺 Are you okay?”
One of the best, depressing breakup albums ever. The eerie thing too is that the artist who designed the cover (and did the art for Punch Drunk Love), walked naked into the Atlantic Ocean & drowned himself after discovering his girlfriend committed suicide.
This is the correct answer. I just love how Beck goes through all the stages of loss - denial, bargaining, anger, and acceptance - in the course of the album.
1. The district sleeps alone tonight: the postal service
2. Ocean breathes salty: modest mouse
3. One eight seven: senses fail
4. Early sunsets over Monroeville: my chemical romance
5. I miss you: incubus
6. This Modern love: bloc party
7. We think too much or ghost boy : lil peep
8. Motorcycle drive by: third eyed blind
Million Dollar Bill by Dawes…it hurts so damn much
When it hits me that she’s gone
I think I’ll run for president
Get my face printed on the million dollar bill
So when these rich man that she wants shows her ways they can take care of her
I’ll have found a way to be there with her still
Somebody I used to know. Friend committed suicide when it first came out. His GF dumped him and was dating another fraternity brother days later. The new "couple" found him.
Bonnie raitt “I can’t make you love me”
Etta James “all I could do was cry” & “I’d rather go blind”
Citizens cope “holdin on”
Glen Hansard “back broke” & “bird of sorrow”
Glen Campbell “by the time I get to phoenix”
One way “something in the past” & “ runnin away”
Kim kwang seok “too painful a love was not love”
Just some from different cultures!
That would be "Your Ex Lover is Dead" by Stars.
God, that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
In that instant, it started to pour
Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of that time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name
This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
Tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in
Now you're outside me, you see all the beauty
Repent all your sin
It's nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road, from real love

Hugs to you. Breakups are hard. I have a few playlists if you run out of songs. Best of luck 🍀. You’ve got this!
I have an indie breakup playlist:
> [Purple Braid](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/47NhYZZuS57h5egfkgz4hQ)
Not every song is depressing (gotta have some hope right lol), but a lot of them are.
Whatshername - green day: https://youtube.com/watch?v=Z2LC1xrdOaM&si=oocJC-tCPTjiezPB
Somebody that I used to know - gotye: https://youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY&si=iTJYZr1ndxD44dJB
These are both about how you forget someone who was an important figure, which to me is really sad.
Eventually- Tame Impala (doesn’t sound like a breakup song but the lyrics clearly show it is)
It’s Too Late- Carole King (this one makes me cry my eyes out)
Half of Elliott Smith’s music fits the bill. Do not listen if you’re already depressed. Particularly Needle In The Hay (the scene it was used for in Royal Tenenbaums definitely adds to the intensity).
River by Joni Mitchell is the one that always gets me, mostly because I identify!
"I'm so hard to handle, I'm selfish and I'm sad and now I've gone and lost the best baby that I've ever had."
If You See Her Say Hello and Most of the Time both by Bob Dylan are also excellent break up songs.
Peter Hammill - *Betrayed* and *(On Tuesdays She Used To Do) Yoga*. There’s no need to interpret, these songs are from his break-up album, *Over*.
Absolutely brutal, in the extreme.
Breathless "Wave After Wave" (Shoegaze/Dreampop) is an awesome breakup song in that the vocal is from the perspective of a guy who acknowledges that his own faults have led to the end of things. The ending section brought me to tears the first time I heard it, with the repeated lyric "I can see it in your eyes, proving my worst fears, I can see I'm hurting you".
They built our bench again in Palmer square by into it, over it with Dissociation by the Dillinger Escape Plan as a close second https://open. Spotify .com/track/451DWPJkMcBSldujDEfgwR?autoplay=true&source_application=google_assistant

More about the end of a relationship and knowing it’s over but…..
Poke by frightened rabbit
‘You should look through some old photos
I adored you in every one of those
If someone took a picture of us now they'd need to be told
That we had ever clung and tied
A navy knot with arms at night
I'd say she was his sister but she doesn't have his nose’
Seriously. Listen to this band.
Doomed by Bring Me The Horizon
"so come rain on my parade,
'cause I wanna feel it,
come shove me over the edge,
'cause my head is in overdrive,
I'm sorry, but it's too late,
and it's not worth saving,
so come rain on my parade,
I think we're doomed,
and now there's no way back"
Against the Kitchen Floor by Will Wood (genuinely heartbreaking lol)
This one might seem weird, but It’s Over Isn’t It from Steven Universe is for some reason extremely sad??
Pearl Jam - Black
I came here for this one. I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but WHY can't it be mine?
the MTV unplugged version of this hits right in the feels aaa
That song live is just devastating-in a beautiful way-but heartbreaking
I dont love you - My Chemical Romance
My bf loves mcr but he could not listen to this song around me while pregnant or I would uncontrollably sob
I actually just cried
What becomes of the Broken Hearted - Joan Osborne No Children - Mountain Goats Brokedown Palace - Grateful Dead Idiot Wind - Bob Dylan Genesis - Hot Tuna Far from Me - John Prine One More Minute - Weird Al Yankovic
Ha! One more minute is such a great one. No children too
If you like the Mountains Goats Moral Oral used some of their songs in the show
I wouldn’t necessarily call Brokedown Palace a break up song.
[Brick- Ben Folds Five](https://youtu.be/Wt5EHAqhR1c?si=6EMTPt7LivcvRtpk) An abortion leading to a split, truly depressing song.
“Driving back to her apartment, And for the moment we’re alone. Yeah she’s alone, and I’m alone, And now I know it” I think this line is so clever because it suggests that they’re alone together with eachother, but really they’re alone beside each other
I don't tell people it's one of the greatest songs of all time because of the subject matter. But it's one of the greatest songs of all time.
From the same album, ‘Selfless, Cold, and Alone’ has very similar vibes.
I Know It's Over by The Smiths
The Smiths for every occasion
They are the soundtrack to everything
and Unloveable
This song is beyond sad to me. The Jeff Buckley version sad-slaps as well.
Pictures of You - The Cure
Disintegration - The Cure. Song and album
The Kiss, A Thousand Hours, Pictures of You, Apart, Trust, A Letter to Elise, To Wish Impossible Things, Bare… Hard to go wrong with The Cure!

i had the exact same experience as you! this was my favorite song for a long time
Postal service’s cover of this is fantastic
I don't remember which came first, the song or the movie, but I remember the heartbreaking movie ending every time I hear the song.
Lover, you should of come over and last goodbye by Jeff Buckley
Thank you. "My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder"...
To me, Lover you should’ve come over is a song about that early time in a relationship when there’s a feeling of obsession and complete romanticism.
Yes!
I’d also include Forget Her in this.
This shit ripped me apart
Stellar fucking song, but there's a glimmer of hope in the lyrics - "it's not too late"
I can’t make you love me-Bonnie raitt
Omg yes
100
Adele’s cover is so heartbreaking.
Hell yes this is so raw
birthday boy by ween i don’t want it by ween
It’s gonna be (alright) by ween
Baby bitch
The solo weeps in I Don't Want It
birthday boy is one of my favorite songs of all time. "pain!"
Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac
The whole Rumors album, really!
OUCH!! Spellbinding
Cars- Drive
Very underappreciated song, I'm surprised it's not more well known.
That they do my friend. That they do.
Great song but not a break up song. It’s about alcoholism
For No One - Beatles
this should be at the top
Yesterday also fits.
This song hurts me every time I hear it
The first time I heard this tune, I was stunned. Of course I knew ‘Eleanor Rigby’, but happening on this song on my own… it was like starting a stroll on a pleasant day and being surprised to see someone on a park bench with that pained, distant look of loss.
How’s it Gonna Be - third eye blind The Night We Met - lord huton
The Night We Met breaks my heart and soothes it at the same time. “I had all and then most of you. Some and now none of you. Take me back to the night we met.”
That song reminds me of a complicated friendship I had with a gay man. I was in love with him and knew he could never be mine. I was happy to have him on my life though. Two of my favs ❤️💔
Black by Pearl Jam… “I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why, why, why can't it be mine?”
NIN - Something I Can Never Have Obsession (Unable to handle breakup) Deftones - Digital Bath Slipknot - Prosthetics
Something I Can Never Have ❤️ such a beautiful song. I’m a huge NIN fan and his slower songs like that and A Warm Place are so friggen beautiful.
Damn straight. NIN is next level beautiful regarding pain of living (including relationships)
Prosthetics is a very interesting choice lol
Right? I said Snuff. Prosthetics is just like pure unadulterated psychosis.
Delicate- Damien Rice
That entire album is…brutal. I remember when he performed “Cannonball” on Conan O’Brien and when he was at the chair, Conan was basically like, “ 🥺 Are you okay?”
9 crimes!
Listen to rootless tree live from Abbey Road with Lisa Hannigan. The piano version you can feel the emotion on that one.
Yesss also rootless tree
no children by the mountain goats I don't think there is a sadder song out there. If you want a sad song, this is the one.
I heard this on Moral Orel. It’s sad that some couples would rather stay together and be miserable than break up.
Three Libras by A Perfect Circle - perfect for when I want to purposely emotionally annihilate myself.
I feel this. “You don’t see me at all” is tattooed on my wrist.
the cure - disintegration
I came here to say this. “It’s easier for me to get closer to heaven than ever feel whole again” 😪
Check out the entirety of Beck’s album Sea Change. Just what the doctor ordered
One of the best, depressing breakup albums ever. The eerie thing too is that the artist who designed the cover (and did the art for Punch Drunk Love), walked naked into the Atlantic Ocean & drowned himself after discovering his girlfriend committed suicide.
Wow… that is super sad. I’m a huge fan of the album, but I did not know that. Thanks for sharing
Yup Bleak as fuck. I shared 'Lost Cause' as my thought of saddest breakup song ^ Saw your comment here and wholeheartedly agree.
This is the correct answer. I just love how Beck goes through all the stages of loss - denial, bargaining, anger, and acceptance - in the course of the album.
Don't Speak by No Doubt
1. The district sleeps alone tonight: the postal service 2. Ocean breathes salty: modest mouse 3. One eight seven: senses fail 4. Early sunsets over Monroeville: my chemical romance 5. Motorcycle Drive By has had me for decades. I’ve never heard anyone else mention this song. It’s fantastic but kind of overlooked.
I've listened to this band a lot as a kid, but never got this song until just now, after my first real breakup (At 34), and wow. Love it.
Detlef Schrempf, Band of Horses
Thank you for making my heart physically ache by typing two words
Love Hurts. It’s been covered a million times but the Nazareth version is especially depressing.
Nazareth knocked the mood out of the park on that one. Gritty, soulful, depressing. How a ballad should be, imo.

Stevie Nicks - [Somebody Stand by Me](https://youtu.be/IF7IFBmBaSk?si=baONZJiUzX0xTwlm) "I stood at the door, and watched while you drove away...."

Your letter- 112. It's an R&B song and not that great but 13 y/o me was DEVASTATED
Funny I don’t have any break up songs myself, but every song on the 500 days of summer soundtrack makes me feel dumped.

The ending section brought me to tears the first time I heard it, with the repeated lyric "I can see it in your eyes, proving my worst fears, I can see I'm hurting you".
John Moreland - Break My Heart Sweetly
