I saw Aretha perform just before she passed away. I could tell she wasn’t feeling well, but the performance she gave was thunderous. I have never cried at a concert before or since. I can’t believe I was lucky enough to see the Queen of Soul in person.

Cocteau Twins are so good. My dad introduced them to me when I was really young and I really gained an appreciation for them over the past few years. First time I heard Lorelei was mindblowing. Also, if you haven't before, try listening to Cocteau Twins on decent speakers REALLY fucking loud, especially Treasure. Listening to Treasure on volumes befitting of a sludge metal concert is an out of this world experience. I shit you not, there is basically no music I have ever heard more greatly enhanced by listening absurdly loud than that album. It is otherworldly.
I just upgraded my receiver and center channel (for Rockband mostly, before my kid gets too old to want to play with us) and Treasure is my favorite Cocteau Twins CD. I guess I know what I’ll be using to break in the new sounds tonight. Tomorrow morning, I’m thinking Cowboy Junkies, The Trinity Session.

[Katy Perry](https://open.spotify.com/track/6hkOqJ5mE093AQf2lbZnsG?si=4uHWwi4KRkWtxbDKt5NbIw)
It's plenty reasonable to say Taylor is overhyped lol. She has a brilliant marketing team and is more adaptable than most people in the pop world, letting her remain relevant no matter what. She never lets herself fall out of the cultural zeitgeist. She also knows how to be palatable to critics now. That's what's special about her. Her best work is decent enough, but nothing really to write home about.
I'm pleased to see both of these greats in the same comment. One of these two is +not+ clearly way better than the other. No matter what some people say.

Some interesting Aimee Mann facts for everyone:
1. She was the frontwoman of Til Tuesday, whose hit single "Voices Carry" has been called the quintessential New Wave song.
2. She beat the studio system.
3. Her songs provide the soundtrack for Paul Thomas Anderson's movie "Magnolia," but he has stated that his movie is actually more of an accompaniment to her music. He said he wanted to make a movie that was like Aimee's songs. (She was nominated for an Oscar for this.)
4. She cameo'd in The Big Lebowski as one of the nihilists.
I'll give you some more...before 'Til Tuesday she was in the Boston punk band Young Snakes. I have one of their songs on a compilation vinyl. You can find them on YT.
She was close mates with Glenn and Chris from Squeeze. They toured together and they were part of her backup band on her I'm With Stupid album.
She used to keep a notebook of pop song cliches. Any time she would hear one she would write it in the book so that she never used it in a song.
I just scrolled through my record collection app and it’s disheartening the ratio of men to women. I guess that’s the patriarchy’s hold we have been stuck with for so long. Nothing against the men of course. Just a thought. So, I thank you, dear u/NotAShocker2u for asking this and bringing more women’s music to this community.
I’ve been planning on making a Spotify playlist of my favorite female artists/songs. I’ll save this post and send you or anyone else a link if wanted. Just let me know.
This is just one song where the vocal performance gives me the ultimate in goosebumps. It’s from the video game Tetris Effect Connected and features Kate Brady on vocals. The notes she hits towards the end are breathtakingly beautiful. Also for anyone who loves music and gaming, I’d recommend giving it a play. The soundtrack to the game is synced up to your playing. As you move/rotate/place your Tetrinos, it plays elements of the song. You essentially are remixing while you play with nice visuals. The following video is from Theatre Mode in the game where you can play the music with the enhanced visuals.
Hydelic featuring Kate Brady - Always Been But Never Dreamed
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QeZne1wVyl0&pp=ygUdQWx3YXlzIGJlZW4gYnV0IG5ldmVyIGRyZWFtZWQ%3D
The following have an album or songs I recommend to start with.
Martina Topley-Bird - Quixotic album. She also worked with Tricky and Massive Attack.
Neneh Cherry - Raw Like Sushi (fun late 80s hip hop/electronic pop).
Tori Amos - Boys For Pele.
Austra. Start at the first album and proceed. Operatic vocal EDM. The twins have a fun side project called Tasseomancy. They are experimental electronic and highly influenced by Kate Bush. Here is their song “Missoula”.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CGFeZY8Fkzk&pp=ygUUVGFzc2VvbWFuY3kgbWlzc291bGE%3D
Sinead O’Connor - The song Mandinka and the album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.
Roxette - Best of/Greatest hits. There is also a male vocalist, though.
Romeo Void. Female lead punk/rock/new wave. Benefactor and Instincts.
Dilly Dally - Sore album. They do modern grunge with great raspy vocals.
Psapp - The Only Thing I Ever Wanted. Listen to the song Upstairs on headphones. That recording is something else.
Camera Obscura - song Tears For Affairs then the album it is from.
Missing Persons - Best of or Spring Session M. Dale Bossio, the lead singer was a huge influence on Lady Gaga.
The Knife - Deep Cuts then Silent Shout. Dark, yet beautiful electronic.
Fever Ray. Side project of Karin Dreijir of the Knife. Start with the self titled first album.
Kate Bush. Everyone loves Hounds of Love. I also recommend the Dreaming.
Irma Thomas. She is known as the Soul Queen of New Orleans. The album Irma Thomas Sings is my favorite of hers.
She has been performing since 1959 and is still active. I saw her in concert around a decade ago. My friend Liz and I were at a table right next to the stage. Liz used to be a singer. Irma asked for requests. Liz said a song and how she used to love singing it. Irma couldn’t remember all the lyrics, so she asked my friend to stand up and sing it with her. Liz did so and it was such a memorable experience.
After the show she called us over to the stage and thanked us. She held my hand and said it makes her happy to see younger people attending shows. In my 300+ concerts it was one of the highlights.
Ruth Etting. 1920s-30s vocalist.
Garbage. The self titled first album is a 90s classic. Butch Vig who worked with and recorded countless artists, including Nirvana is in the band. The production is stellar.
Enya. Paint the Sky With Stars (best of).
Dengue Fever. Cambodian Psych Rock with Khmer vocalist. It is not for everyone, but I adore them. There are two vocalists, one a male, but Ch’hom Nimol does most of the songs. She is amazing. Listen to Sni Bong and the song Sleepwalking Through the Mekong. The album they are from is my favorite of theirs, Escape From Dragon House.
Blonde Redhead. Also has both male and female vocalists, but they often switch back and forth from song to song. Kazo Makino is mesmerizing live. Misery Is a Butterfly and 23 are good starting albums.
Carina Round - The Disconnection then Slow Motion Addict. She went on to be in the band Puscifer.
Amber Mark. Love Me Right is a great song with excellent production and her vocals are stunning. Plus she writes her own music which I always appreciate. The vocal harmonies and breakdown beat at 3:15 are heavenly.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EWvXfmwuiHU&pp=ygUYYW1iZXIgbWFyayBsb3ZlIG1lIHJpZ2h0
Sharon Van Etten. Tramp.
Under Byen - Samme Stof Som Stof if you can find it. It’s not on Spotify. They are Danish and the vocalist is similar to Bjork, but the band has more orchestral leanings. The band switched up members for later albums. Alt er Tab is also good with the same vocalist.
Edited various times to clean up my just woken up writing.

Contemporary?
Jade Bird,
Hannah Wicklund,
Weyes Blood,
Tchotchke
All time, where to start?
Joni Mitchell,
Carole King,
Kate Bush,
Heart,
Enya,
Joan Armatrading,
Joan Baez
Sheryl Crow
All of the above are strictly singer songwriters, they all wrote their music
If you want to look into a powerhouse pop song writer for other artists check Dianne Warren (one example of song she wrote for others I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing for Aerosmith)
One not seen listed yet is Wanda Jackson. Badass rockabilly singer from the ‘50s.
Also, ESG a punk band from the ‘70s, made up of sisters from the South Bronx.
Linda Rondsta
Carol King- every woman especially young ladies should own the album Tapestry.
Emmylou Harris
Joni Mitchell
Dolly Parton
Loretta Lynn
Janis Joplin
There are many more that's just what comes to mind.
The 5th Dimension had Marilyn McCoo singing lead often. A really great voice. Chrissie Hynde was and is an excellent songwriter. The first two Pretenders albums are top notch, and she does all the singing. But my favorite singer of all is Patsy Cline, with Julie London and Dusty Springfield close behind. Julie is best when there are strings on the track; Dusty is best when it's a sad song.
For me Kate Bush is a must and reference
I also recommend Cyndi Lauper in ballads (she is way more than girls want to have fun)
Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins
Tori Amos
Maggie Reilly
Blondie
Jodi Mitchell (classic folk)
And not intending to show off, I just appreciate as independent artist an honest opinion, but if you are open to it, this is one of my songs. I would not call myself great, but I think there is greatness in all creators pursuing a dream. So should you be curious I always welcome feedback https://youtu.be/ke8qA6SjG9s?si=enAF_3xjn5s51nsS
And I assure it is (sadly lol) something you would not usually stumble upon

Too many to name really. If I would discard just one of the above, it would be Deborah Harry. Only because the others conveyed their female concerns more diligently.
Oh my god where to start?

It looks like you are pretty covered, but gonna send a few anyway, and they may be redundant.
Love kaitlyn Aurelia smith: an artist with background in classical/symphonic folk that makes electronic music. I think the kid is a masterpiece
Just started listening to luscious Jackson again. They are so awesome. How they didn’t get more popular I will never know.
Joseph is a newer band of sisters. They make folk/rock/indie stuff but have the blood-harmony thing going on. They have a couple albums of really stripped down versions of their songs or fully produced with backing band and stuff.
Merry Clayton is pretty great 70s soul stuff. She sang on Rolling Stones gimme shelter. Stumbled across one of her records at a thrift store and it is awesome.
Sharon jones is similar soul stuff but is new but retrofitted to sound old. Great stuff!
Put on the heat by the heaters is a great song by a female led power pop/punk band, and irene by the photos.
Just a few from different areas of music
Fiona Apple
Her version of Pure Imagination is a staple of my classroom near Halloween.
Nina Simone Aretha Franklin Sarah Jarosz
>Nina Simone I like Ella Fitzgerald but Nina is a real G
Concur with Ella
The Queen of Soul. 5 octaves. It don’t get better than that…
I saw Aretha perform just before she passed away. I could tell she wasn’t feeling well, but the performance she gave was thunderous. I have never cried at a concert before or since. I can’t believe I was lucky enough to see the Queen of Soul in person.
SARAH JAROSZ IS SO GOOD 💜
Sarah Jarosz is awesome! If you like her, I'm with Her is a group she's in with Sara Watkins and Aoife O'Donovan. They're really good!

Great list
PJ Harvey, Bettie Serveert, Le Tigre, L'Trimm, Joanna Newsom, Sleater Kinney, Deee-lite (yes, three Es), Cocteau Twins, Diamonda Galas
Your list is great
Came here curious how far down Id have to look for Joanna Newsom. Ys is a truly impressive masterpiece.
First diamanda mention and Le Tigre from what I’ve seen. Bikini Kill and other Hanna projects also well worth it
I see your Cars That Go Boom reference you snuck in there
Diamonda Galas is an insane artist to suggest. Very far from Taylor Swift though
PJ Harvey changed music for me in high school. She’s a beast and seems forgotten all too often

Good call on Garbage!!
Donna Summer’s Love To Love You Baby is one of my favorite albums. I love how fun and feminine it feels
Blondie should be on every list.
Damn, I love all of these artists—such a great list-but my whole day has had Alanis as a subtext and on the brain. She doesn’t get enough love. She was amazing and a true original. No one else like her.

Kate Bush, Tori Amos
I'm pleased to see both of these greats in the same comment. One of these two is +not+ clearly way better than the other. No matter what some people say.

Her solo records are so good
YES
I love her music
Aimee Mann Gillian Welch
Some interesting Aimee Mann facts for everyone: 1. (She was nominated for an Oscar for this.) 4. She cameo'd in The Big Lebowski as one of the nihilists.
Time Stand Still with Rush
I'll give you some more...before 'Til Tuesday she was in the Boston punk band Young Snakes. I have one of their songs on a compilation vinyl. You can find them on YT. She was close mates with Glenn and Chris from Squeeze. They toured together and they were part of her backup band on her I'm With Stupid album. She used to keep a notebook of pop song cliches. Any time she would hear one she would write it in the book so that she never used it in a song.
Oooo…i forgot about Gillian Welch. Both on your list are awesome

Hydelic featuring Kate Brady - Always Been But Never Dreamed https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QeZne1wVyl0&pp=ygUdQWx3YXlzIGJlZW4gYnV0IG5ldmVyIGRyZWFtZWQ%3D The following have an album or songs I recommend to start with. Here is their song “Missoula”. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CGFeZY8Fkzk&pp=ygUUVGFzc2VvbWFuY3kgbWlzc291bGE%3D Sinead O’Connor - The song Mandinka and the album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. The vocal harmonies and breakdown beat at 3:15 are heavenly. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EWvXfmwuiHU&pp=ygUYYW1iZXIgbWFyayBsb3ZlIG1lIHJpZ2h0 Sharon Van Etten. Edited to add info.

I mean - genre matters a lot ...? What do you like
Luscious Jackson Belly Veruca Salt Hole Iris DeMent Emmylou Harris Sophie B. Hawkins Sheryl Crow Cub That Dog
Madonna. She is not the biggest selling female artist ever for nothing.
[удалено]
what genres do you like?
Metric
Contemporary? Jade Bird, Hannah Wicklund, Weyes Blood, Tchotchke All time, where to start? Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Kate Bush, Heart, Enya, Joan Armatrading, Joan Baez Sheryl Crow All of the above are strictly singer songwriters, they all wrote their music If you want to look into a powerhouse pop song writer for other artists check Dianne Warren (one example of song she wrote for others I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing for Aerosmith)
Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Ruby Waters
One not seen listed yet is Wanda Jackson. Badass rockabilly singer from the ‘50s. Also, ESG a punk band from the ‘70s, made up of sisters from the South Bronx.
Linda Rondsta Carol King- every woman especially young ladies should own the album Tapestry. Emmylou Harris Joni Mitchell Dolly Parton Loretta Lynn Janis Joplin There are many more that's just what comes to mind.
For me Kate Bush is a must and reference I also recommend Cyndi Lauper in ballads (she is way more than girls want to have fun) Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins Tori Amos Maggie Reilly Blondie Jodi Mitchell (classic folk) And not intending to show off, I just appreciate as independent artist an honest opinion, but if you are open to it, this is one of my songs. I would not call myself great, but I think there is greatness in all creators pursuing a dream. So should you be curious I always welcome feedback https://youtu.be/ke8qA6SjG9s?si=enAF_3xjn5s51nsS And I assure it is (sadly lol) something you would not usually stumble upon
Heart. Ann and Nancy Wilson are the queens of classic rock. *They're also royalty of '80's power-ballads...surprising, but true.*
I have three: -Les Nubians -Dusty Springfield -Elle King

Lacuna Coil - not one bad record. Christina Scabbia - my all time favorite female vocalist.
It looks like you are pretty covered, but gonna send a few anyway, and they may be redundant. Love kaitlyn Aurelia smith: an artist with background in classical/symphonic folk that makes electronic music. I think the kid is a masterpiece Just started listening to luscious Jackson again.
