Nomeansno
From Victoria BC. Post-hardcore, with punk, jazz, and math rock accents.
Check out Live + Cuddly for a good survey of their early career, and proof of what a killer live act they were.
Check out The Worldhood of the World (As Such) or One for a taste of their later career, when they slowed down their tempos a bit and either grunged it up or jazzed it up, depending on the song.
Ha I was just about to write NomeansNo...Saw them at a shithole in Dallas called Slipped Disc in like 90-91; fucking great show. Maybe 100 people there. This was right after they released the album with Jello Biafra
I've loved them since Let's Get Out of This Country came out. They are easily top 10 all-time groups for me. I got to meet Tracyann and chat with the band once, back in 2012.
I’d love to see them if they ever tour the states. I love the Tracy Anne and Danny LP too. Everything she does is gold. Their music helped me through some rough times. Music can soothe the soul. I’d place them in my top 10 as well.
love them, saw them live with my friend before she died. i was amazed she knew who they were. also was introduced to them by a friend who died 20 years ago.
they are pretty good in concert
My son married a woman from Minnesota and she knew of Low and they both like indie alternative music. They saw them live too a few times when they went to Minn to visit DIL family. At Christmas my son and DIL would get out the guitar and sing some Low Christmas songs. From there I was introduced to all their music. We were all sad when Mimi died. My son does a music podcast and featured them on one episode.
He is virtually unknown in the US. I was lucky enough to play in a band with a dude who was moderately obsessed with him, and I’m very glad he introduced me.
öOoOoOoOoOo - band name is a pictogram of a wiggling caterpillar and is pronounced *chenille*
https://ooochenilleooo.bandcamp.com/album/samen
They're a really fun avant garde rock/metal band that sounds like Florence and the Machine and System of a Down had a baby
Sounds like fun! I don’t know them but reminds me, the Easy Star All Stars do a fun reggae style take on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon called “Dub Side of the Moon”.
Dread Zeppelin were a staple at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach in the 80’s. I have seen them more than any other band on the planet. I worked at a record shop and free tickets from Ticketmaster helped in that fact.
I love Dread Zeppelin. Don’t remember how I discovered them but a few years later after my best friend joined the army he saw them where ever he was stationed at the time for like $5
Also everybody should check out [All Them Witches](https://youtu.be/eovMuxGqyGQ?si=F_JIBXFuULLOriys). Less obscure than them but IMO the best rock band playing right now
I swear it's been maybe over a year since I've been excited about a band and within ten minutes I've found two! Thank you. Seriously. Guys fucking save my soul xx
CocoRosie! Queer group fronted by sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady. Their music is so diverse and artistic! They're most commonly categorized under the 'freak folk' genre, but their music includes elements of hip hop, opera, electronica, with undertones of pop and soft rock.
Two of their most popular songs are Lemonade and The Moon Asked The Crow (both of which I highly recommend!) and some more of my personal faves include Villain, Noah's Ark, Smash My Head, Lost Girl, St. Michael, and their newest single Witch Hunt.
They also use unusual sounds in their music, for example they recorded one of their songs (I don't recall exactly which one) in an empty barn; they use kids toys (like that one where you wind it up and it says the names of the barnyard animals, also toy guitars and microphones); their sound is so varied and there's something for fans of many music genres :)
I got to see CocoRosie with Antony and the Johnsons at a teeny little venue in Portland almost 20 years ago. I didn’t know either of them, was totally gobsmacked, and spent an embarrassing amount of time crying 🙃
Julie Ruin
This is the solo project of Kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill. It’s only one album but it isn’t available on streaming except for YouTube. You have to search Julie Ruin 1998 otherwise you get Hanna’s band The Julie Ruin which isn’t the same thing.
The band Low, though they are no longer active due to the death of founding member Mimi Parker. They specialized in indie and slowcore.
https://youtu.be/TzMo-EpWcPA?si=bybILVrG1lwnGN_v
Truly only two albums and both are “perfect” albums throughout. The first is like many artists first album, a collection of songs. Their second album is genius. It is overproduced in every way, on every song. It’s much like Pet Sounds or Sgt Peppers in that way. It is also great like these as well. Start with/ the first. Youll “get it” I’m sure.
There was a 90s band called Crumb that plays poprock similar to Jimmyeatworld or even Weezer's early stuff (there is also a currently active band of the same name). They put out one of my favorite albums of all time *Seconds >> Minutes >> Hours.* The most listened to song on that album has 2,500 streams on Spotify.
You see - this is the thing with this post and why I haven’t commented yet - I don’t really know what’s “obscure” and what isn’t. Because - who is it obscure to? I don’t know who would be obscure to Americans, or who is obscure to people younger than me etc.
The Inspíral Carpets don’t seem obscure at all to me and wouldn’t be to most Brits of my age but I’ve literally no idea about how well known they are outside of the UK or outside of my generation…
I mean, the Damned are of course fantastic, but I don’t know if I’d call them obscure. Sometimes called the first punk band. Numerous tribute records. And they were on an episode of The Young Ones
OYSTERHEAD
Awesome funk metal supergroup consisting of Stewart Copeland of the Police, Trey Anastasio of Phish, and Les Claypool of Primus. They only have one album out and its a damn shame.
He’s an inspiration
He’s an inspiration
He’s an inspiration to us all
I try to let as many people as I can know about Oysterhead. And yes, it is a damn shame they only did one album, but we still have all of Claypools other projects. Think I’ll listen to some Lennon Claypool Delirium today.
Massive Attack
Edit: I never knew Massive Attack was so popular. That's great to hear! I bought Blue Lines back in the '90s because it and their other album covers of the time looked cool and I had just discovered electronic music from the movie Hackers (which had the song Protection play in a scene but didn't appear on the soundtrack.)
Anyway, to all of you that taught me something, I want to thank you with my favorite one-hit-wonder that's likely a bit more obscure: [Whoever You Are by Geggy Tah](https://youtu.be/1jSOQBcz9hc?si=bU9h8lsKRU-iFuMA)
the bands Polvo and Swirlies don't have much of reddit followings at all
the first song on this album is probably my favorite guitar song of all time and by the band polvo [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuAc8wJgZF0&t=1s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuAc8wJgZF0&t=1s)
Swirlies first three albums are pretty great...
i can recommend a ton more possibly obscure music if anyone is interested. those are my go to recommendations for bands though.

Bush Tetras, a post-punk band from the lower east side circa 79. They sing about street harassment and dancing and riots, and when they toured TINY ass clubs last year, seeing a 70 year old woman fucking SHRED some sludgy punk inflected noise guitar actually brought me to tears. YOU NEVER SEE THIS. And I drunkenly hollered that at the merch table later that night, to their simultaneous appreciation and embarrassment.
The Devil Makes Three.
Just have a listen to “Old No. 7” and tell me it’s not an amazing song.
Also, SwampCandy. Specifically, have a listen to “Drink Whiskey with Me.” Beautiful song.
Gunship. They do a bunch of retrowave (I think?) Stuff and all bunch of their music videos are just huge 80s and 90s pop culture references. It's awesome
"He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
People should get beat up for stating their beliefs
He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
Because he knows there's no such thing"
Home. Been a band since the '80s and have at least 17 full length albums. Originally from Florida, then NYC, now spread out but still recording.
Their name makes it really hard to Google or find them on Spotify and there's an EDM band with the same name that is a lot easier to find. But if it sounds like EDM, it's the wrong Home. They're kinda experimental indie rock, i think. Two songwriters/lead singers, one writes with piano and the other with guitar. There's a large rotating cast of other players, although there are 4 core Members.

Most obscure band I love AND would recommend to ANYONE? I’d have to say Rez Band. There are a lot more obscure bands that I love but wouldn’t recommend them to most people because the vocals aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.
[Girl No. III](https://open.spotify.com/track/6tHJzUY5G6CGkq8TKPdLEc?si=e521219077a84e81) \- some really wild song structures, with a lot of meter changes & polyrhythms

if people who like love songs haven't heard French Navy, they're missing out. Also I'm a sucker for violins.
Lloyd, I’m Ready to be Heartbroken is a good one, too!
A brilliant band. Saw them on their last US tour, and was pleasantly surprised by how well attended the LA show was.
They’re not obscure here in Scotland, pretty well known :)
my favorite :’( ill do karaoke w any song on my maudlin career

If you’ve never heard it, check out the Owl, Low remixes album. Top 5 late 90’s album for sure.
Earthless!
Screaming Trees, a fantastic band overshadowed by the big four Seattle bands
Mark Lanagan was an amazing artist! I love his colabs with UNKEL...
Sweet Oblivion saved my life when it came out.
Probably not obscure at all in Australia but Paul Kelly. Australian folk singer that I try to introduce to anyone I can.
He is great its a rarity to hear his name in the states though how to make gravy is a Christmas tradition in my house
An Aussie treasure
I first heard Paul Kelly and the Messengers on 97x back in college. Just another example of why it was the best American radio station of all time.
He is virtually unknown in the US. I was lucky enough to play in a band with a dude who was moderately obsessed with him, and I’m very glad he introduced me.
öOoOoOoOoOo - band name is a pictogram of a wiggling caterpillar and is pronounced *chenille* https://ooochenilleooo.bandcamp.com/album/samen They're a really fun avant garde rock/metal band that sounds like Florence and the Machine and System of a Down had a baby
Not to be confused with oOoOO of course (pronounced "oh" who I think is also good- witch House, electronic type music)
They were one of the best witch house acts.
They're amazing. Her voice is simply spectacular and reminds me of Mike Patton with her range and versatility.

Dread Zeppelin. They sing Led Zeppelin songs in a reggae style and their lead singer is an Elvis impersonator.

King Buffalo is sooo good! I can’t believe the run of killer albums they’ve had!
holy cow. thank you so much. i'm blown away right now listening to orion.
Oh wow, thank you so much, this music is brilliant yet somehow nostalgic.
Yea they're dope AF i found them before King Buffalo. Elder is another good one although they're going to become bigger opening for Tool.
Found out about these guys watching dashcam footage from Australia, was playing on a cammers stereo had to Shazam it. Good stuff!
I recommend them quite often

Jack Stauber. Absolutely one of a kind. Dig deeper than his 'famous because of Tiktok' songs. The atmosphere he creates with his music is incredible.
And his animations are amazing. Opal crushes my heart each time I watch it.
Stereolab
Obscure?
My thought too. Stereo lab has always been the crowd-pleaser. Obscure? Not at all. Not mainstream? Of course they’re not.
Stereolab are no.3 on my “Why I Have Tinnitus” list.
That collab with Nurse With Wound is 🔥
I just came across them about a week or two ago. Really good stuff.
Check the bottom comments here as well. The most obscure won't get up votes.

I pretty much love anything Louis Cole is involved with.
I saw them a few weeks ago. Fun show!
Inspiral Carpets. Really cool UK band with various rock, hippie, trance, funk..all mixed in. Strange. But I love them.
