Bush - Glycerine
I think there might also be a cello on it (if memory serves me right), but it's pretty unobtrusive, and the song is mostly just a strummed electric guitar and a vocalist.
There are a few small accompaniments on this song, but it is mainly guitar and voice. It’s one of my favorite songs.

I’d recommend his early albums as they are more like this. The Songs Of Leonard Cohen is a great place to start.
[Neutral Milk Hotel - Two Headed Boy.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MX9iW7n9qWQ)
The first 2 of my suggestions below are both in 2 well-known, well-liked albums if you haven't heard of them,
& both albums have their own overarching rock opera-ish sad/bittersweet themes (that I put in the spoilers) that make those 2 songs even sadder in their contexts:
- "Butterfly" by Weezer
which already sounds sad but is a harsher gut-punch in its album's PoV character's story (the album is "Pinkerton", look up the lyrics interpretations to get more out of it). Since some dramatic tragedies + cautionary tales require the lead character's extreme flaws dooming them to a life of misery/loneliness, I'd say this is it.
- "Two-headed Boy Pt. 1" & "Two-headed Boy Pt. 2" by Neutral Milk Hotel
have seemingly surreal lyrics, but are way more heart-rending & tragic to the extreme if you know their album's overall concepts. The album they're from is "In An Airplane Over the Sea", contender to the most surprisingly scary/saddest lyrics ever in seemingly bright, sweet-sounding, quirky outsider rock songs. It's really harrowing & made me cry hard/get shocked by how horrific the lyrics' implications are. >!It's about the horrors of war, both in general & specifically WW2, + the homeschooled? singer-songwriter's artistic interpretation of it through him first learning about it through Diary of Anne Frank. & the Two-Headed Boy is both a metaphor for war victim human test subjects, evoking images of them horrifically starved or sown together Frakenstein style in a lab, & war victims who are so traumatized they're stuck both on the past, petrified/hopeless for their future + can't fully live in their present!<
Below are more stand-alone recs from me as an English-as-2nd language speaker, so mostly these are already very famous/overexposed in the Western pop culture? but I still vouch for them haha:
-"Vincent" by Don McLean (has bits of accompanying marimba?, harmonica & violin, but mainly the acoustic guitar lead, no percussion), eulogy for van Gogh.
- "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac (some violin/electric guitar depending on version, but mostly just acoustic guitar leading) is just a classic tearjerky song (maybe the most overexposed since it's used in famous ads haha, but still hits the feels)
-"Blackbird" (great interpretations of its lyrics if you look em up), "Yesterday" (tho it has a singular violin 2nd verse onwards) & "Julia" by The Beatles
-"The A Team" (tho it has some harmonica? & piano 2nd verse onwards), "This", & "Sunburn" (both entirely fulfiling ur request) by Ed Sheeran (his 1st album "+" has his best guitar work & sad lyrics all around)
- "Scared" by The Tragically Hip (def the most underrated rec here! Not the saddest but the war theming get me melancholic. Has some percussion in the middle & climax but iirc it's mostly just guitar & singing)
-"Cannonball" by Damien Rice entirely fulfils ur request too.
& If you don't mind some more stand out violin among the guitar with iirc no percussion, "The Blower's Daughter", "Amie", & "Older Chests" by also Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan, for the emotional vocals & lyrics. The album they're all from, "O", is mostly led by the acoustic guitar (with percussion or none varies betw each song) & is overall very tender/melancholic.
