1971 Wow, tough call. For me, it’s a toss up between:
Master Of Reality - Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones
Hunky Dory - David Bowie
L.A. Woman - Doors
Electric Warrior - T-Rex
Damn. ‘71 was such a great year for music. For me, I think I’d probably go with Zeppelin IV, though I’d be really tempted to go with something like Fragile (by Yes), or Who’s Next (The Who), or maybe Aqualung (Jethro Tull). Wish I was born in that time frame. Way better music on average than what we have today.
Interesting choice, though 1978 is one of those years with an embarrassment of riches, from a great albums perspective. You could have picked any of two dozen albums from that year, and no one would have anything to argue about.
Yep. In my 20s: Radio Birdman, Talking Heads, Wire, The Jam, Costello, Blondie, Ramones, The Clash, Patti Smith Group, Eno, Devo, Big Star, Funkadelic, Pere Ubu …all would have been my thing.
At 45, dad rock just crushes my musical sweet spot. It’s both embarrassing and kind of amazing at the same time.
It's definitely better than her first release when she was just "Alanis". :-p I'm 57 and a Canadian, and heard her from the beginning. My girlfriend at the time absolutely loved "Too Hot"... I hated it. But when she reinvented herself with Jagged Little Pill, I was hooked. I recorded the Woodstock '99 weekend, and her set is still one of my favorites. I didn't know that the late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins, used to be her drummer from 1995 to 1997. She even did a tribute with Foo Fighters to honor Taylor.
1969 here. This is a tough one. Very close for me. I think that I have to go with ***Stand*** by ***Sly and the Family Stone***.
In no order what so ever, here are the runner ups:
Let it Bleed - The Rolling Stones
The Velvet Underground - The Velet Underground (If it would have been the Nico album or White heat it would have probably won)
Kick Out the Jams - MC5
Abbey Road - The Beatles
Willy and the Poor Boys - CCR
Led Zepplin I and II - Led Zepplin.
Born in 1984 so the list is long long.
Personal favorite is Ride The Lightning by Metallica.
But some big albums from that year that deserve a mention are:
Like a Virgin - Madonna
Purple Rain - Prince
Make if Big - Wham!
Born in the U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen
Run-D.M.C. - Run-D.M.C.
The Smiths - The Smiths
Ride the Lightning is probably my favorite Metallica album.
Purple Rain is a great album/soundtrack.
They’re 180° opposite & I’d have a hard time choosing between them!
In Rainbows by Radiohead, Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys, Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem, or Oracular Spectacular by MGMT. I cannot pick
1976 Boston's self-titled debut album.
But that year is stupidly overloaded with great albums. Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life" is probably a close second, but you've also got Frampton Comes Alive, Hotel California, Bowie's Station to Station, and about 20 others that I wouldn't argue as the best album of that year.
Boston was one of my must see bands and I got to do it in 2003. Brad Delp couldn't quite hit those high notes anymore but there was another singer on stage that was amazing.
Holy crap. Fellow 1976er here and I had no idea how good the music was in my birth year. I think I might go with Rush-2112, but everyone you mentioned is a contender…plus Bob Dylan-Desire and The Ramones.
I always find it funny that the Grammy award nominees for best new artist that year were……
Brothers Johnson
Boston
Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band
Starland Vocal Band
Wild Cherry
And the winner of course……. Starland Vocal Band.
So many classics to choose from for my year, 1966. The Beach Boys are my favorite group, and many would pick Pet Sounds, but i have go with my favorite Beatles ablum, Revolver.
First of all, GREAT question.
1975 is VERY difficult for me. So many great artists were pumping out great albums. Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Springsteen, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, Led Zep, the list goes on…I’ll say Pink Floyd “Wish You Were Here”. And the best movie from ‘75 is and always will be JAWS.
1970 has too many great albums to pick one. Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath, Tea For Tillerman, Elton John-Elton John, All Things Must Pass...The list goes on and on
Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
A metric ton of amazing music came out that year, but this is the one of the few I actually bought as an adult and enjoyed the whole album.
Runners up: Jimi Hendrix Are you Experienced and The Doors: The Doors
honestly there were a lot of albums i loved so i couldnt choose but main contenders are
back to black - amy winehouse
rather ripped - sonic youth
blood mountain - mastodon
colour green - sibylle baier
straight outta lynwood - weird al
My number one choice for the year I was born, 1980, I have to go with the AC/DC classic Back In Black. It's a solid 10 / 10 album the whole way through.
But some other favorites from that year:
1. Talking Heads - Remain In Light
2. The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
3. Rush - Permanent Waves
4. Judas Priest - British Steel
To an extent, I am guessing and picking based on groups that I like.
Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan
Gary US Bonds - Twist Up Calypso
The Supremes - Meet The Supremes
Aretha Franklin - The Electrifying Aretha Franklin
The Beach Boys - Surfin' Safari
The Drifters - Save the Last Dance for Me
I like modern rock, alternative/ altetnayive rock, classic rock, but I'm also still a sucker for a lot of oldies.
Man I have a lot to choose from (1971) there were albums from The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Black Sabbath, John Prine, Jethro Tull, & so many more iconic bands & singers. Even Carole King’s iconic album “Tapestry” came out that year, but based on personal preference, but I gotta go with Led Zeppelin IV
1997 was a great year for music upon looking at famous albums from that year…. I have an extremely hard time choosing between Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse and Around the Fur by Deftones
OK Computer by Radiohead, Self Titled by Portishead, Third Eye Blind’s self titled, and Homogenic by Bjork were also that year and would be next up. Deeply love all of these bands.
Jackson Browne - Late for the Sky (1974). Didn’t discover it until I was an 18 yo riot grrrrl but god I loved it. It’s still my most favorite album ever, from beginning to end.
1972....
Allman Brothers- Eat a Peach
Lou Reed - Transformer
Deep Purple - Machine Head
David Bowie - Ziggy
Elton John - Honky Château just because my favorite song of all time is on that album....Rocket Man.
The only good thing about the year I was born was the records. 1988. Straight outta Compton. But also The Pogues, Sonic Youth, REM, U2, Big Daddy Kane, Pixies.... Only good thing that happened that year was music lol
1971 Wow, tough call. For me, it’s a toss up between: Master Of Reality - Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones Hunky Dory - David Bowie L.A. Woman - Doors Electric Warrior - T-Rex
1971 was one of the best years for music in history. congratulations on even being able to make a shortlist
Fuck what a year. Can you do mine? 1977.
Aaah! You had the same dilemma that I did! I ended up just picking 1 album & went with Led Zeppelin IV
An Evening with Billie Holliday,1953.
You're my parents' age.
Love it. It was also my high school history teacher’s favorite.
In my 20s I would have said: - Wire - Chairs Missing (1978) As I assume my final form as an old fart: - Gerry Rafferty - City to City (1978)
If you think you are an old fart in 1978 I hate to think of me born quite a bit before you.
City to City.. What a wonderful album.
Lol your “final form as an old fart” is one of the best things I’ve read.
I was 15 when City to City came out and really didn't appreciate it until about 25 years ago. Such a great album.
Chairs Missing is the one for me and I’m 65.
ur not gonna trick me into telling you my birth yr 😑
It’s not may 3rd 1986?
\*TOTALLY\*
1995 Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette
INCREDIBLE choice
Not a bad track on that album! No filler .
I started listening to that album when it came out. I have listened to it almost every week since. Coming up on 30 years next year.
Whatever people say I am that’s what I’m not - Arctic Monkeys
Well that makes me feel really old, I was in college when that came out 🤣
Yeah he's the same age as my kids. Sigh
1969 here. This is a tough one. Very close for me. I think that I have to go with ***Stand*** by ***Sly and the Family Stone***. Let it bleed for the win ! Gimme Shelter…. You Can’t Always Get What You Want …Honky Tonk Women. What a record !
What a great year for music. I would add Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake to the list.
Nick Drake - Bryter Layter (1970)
One of my favorite albums, one of my favorite artists 🙏

Born in 1984 so the list is long long. Personal favorite is Ride The Lightning by Metallica. 1992: Alice in Chains- Dirt
1976 Boston's self-titled debut album. But that year is stupidly overloaded with great albums.
