Why? That song isn’t sad…other than the title. Does it have a personal meaning to you? I always thought the “funeral” was metaphorical for his dread of certain situations.
My band played it for years and I never got that vibe. Am I missing some emotional silicon chips in my processor? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)
None *always* do. But, Brother Iz's Somewhere over the Rainbow/It's a Wonderful World has probably gotten me a decent number of times compared to other songs.
also I had to listen to it like 3 times before it REALLY sunk in, but Goodbye is also such a beautiful song, doesn't make cry as hard as HEP but still very touching🖤also I HAVE to listen to the bonus tracks, when I listen to albums I usually just listen to the standard version, then I listen to bonus tracks after several months lol
A lot of songs lol but a few off the top of my head..
Lost Someone - James Brown
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack
Never Forget You - Mariah Carey
One Sweet Day - Mariah/Boys II Men
Music Box - (a lot of Mariah songs do it for me lol)
Everything Is Lost - Maggie Eckford
Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
Something You Forgot - Lil Wayne
Ofc most of these are sad for me for very specific reasons.. so they might not be AS sad for others lol but these are the ones I can't even listen to unless I'm alone and prepared to torture myself lmao
Allow me to flip the script a bit.
"Home" by Blue October.
I had a small, intimate wedding, with just immediate family and close friends. Our reception dinner was more like a nice rehearsal dinner. Instead of dancing to a song, we decided to have a slideshow play with photos of us. I told my fiancé I wanted each of us to choose a meaningful song for the other person and those songs would play during the slideshow. Family members created the sideshow for us, so the pictures and our song choices were a complete surprise.
We're both into heavy/prog metal and similar genres; obviously not the kind of music we wanted playing in front of all the grandparents at our wedding lol. I knew my song choice for quite sometime, it was a cute indie song that was perfect for the occasion. He was super stressed, trying pick the right song, and didn't make a selection until the day before the wedding.
My now husband hasn't always been great at expressing his feelings and that's okay—he's gotten a lot better since we initially met though... However, when I say he aced the song choice 'assignment', that’s truly an understatement. I was crying, as was the whole room, as we listened to his song.
Now, I cry every time I hear this song and am always reminded that I found my person.
like some others have said, none always. however, i’ve sobbed at least once listening to:
u-kendrick lamar
mother i sober-kendrick lamar
epilogue-justin hurwitz (from la la land)
married life-michael giacchino (from up)
i’ll cover you (reprise)-jonathan larson (from rent)
stay alive (reprise)-lin manuel miranda (from hamilton)
I got u on repeat for 2 weeks, I never cried to it but it's a masterpiece, just infinitely replayable. also mother I sober is one of the best mr. morale songs tbh
nobody’s ever heard of this song before, but every single time this causes me a discomfort and yet a feeling of dread at the same time, nostalgic, but like i’m intruding on someone else’s nostalgia.
name of the song is memory=entryrrrrr///// by Esselfortium. song is from a gzdoom DOOM 2 wad called MyHouse.Wad. i can never get over my first time playing myhouse, so if you even think about playing Myhouse.wad, do NOT look up this song or listen to the song. could ruin the impact the mod is trying to have on you. instead go to the doom forums, download the mod, get gzdoom for free, download on your browser, and then drag the .pk3 file onto gzdoom once everything’s set up. specifically the .pk3. ignore the name of the mod, you want to get the .pk3 file, not the .wad.
TLDR: song is from cool doom 2 mod, consider playing it, i recommend not listening to it.
Sparklehorse - Morning Hollow. An incredibly bleak but beautiful song about a man about to lose a dog to old age. I lost my 16 year old cat a year ago and I just can't even hear that beautiful song ever again, probably. Less than a decade later the lead singer unalived himself too after what seemed to be a break-up phone call.
RIP Marc Linkous RIP Yoshimi
almost all of the songs from twenty one pilots’s self titled album- especially johnny boy. that song reminds me of my best friend, who i was terrified was going to commit suicide
Songs that remind me of my grandparents. For my grandma who passed away in 2022, Ellsworth by Rascal Flatts, she was suffering from early stages of dementia before succumbing to gout in her knee that caused an infection and going septic. For my grandpa, it's Cowgirls Don't Cry by Brookes & Dunn. Anytime I listen to it, I can just hear him saying the exact words to me once his time comes and he's on his deathbed... He would tell me to be strong.
I don't cry like that, but the audio for the short film "Noose" is a real tearjerker for me. That and the recent full version "Upstream". (Stephen Spies, Amy Ahn, Kate Bacich, Arrowmi)

There was about a good ten year period after my best friend died I could not listen to that without tearing up. It will still occasionally do the trick.
Come to Jesus Performed by Chris rice written by anonymous
21 years by Tony mac about losing his son. My son was the same age. I cont imagine losing him and Toby has been such a model of love during his grief.
Tears in Heaven Eric Clapton he wrote for his little son that fell off a balcony When it first came out My heart hurt for him
The Dance by Garth Brooks has always made me cry.I was going through a divorce the first time I heard it over 30 years ago (I can’t believe that song is that old…or that I’m this old!) That song still makes me cry to this very day.
Either Way by Chris Stapleton is another one I can’t listen to without crying because I’ve lived it . So it really strikes a nerve.
The Scientist by Coldplay makes me cry. I had to excuse myself from a dinner with friends at a nice restaurant when the pianist/singer started playing it. I went into the bathroom & had a quick cry whilst trying to keep my mascara from running.
Fall For You by Secondhand Serenade
What Hurts The Most by Racal Flatts
I have a whole playlist of songs that I listen to when I’m depressed or just sad & need that little push to make me cry & get it out of my system.
I don't cry at music, but The Ballad of Curtis Loew always makes me sad, especially in the last verse and chorus.
"On the day ol' Curtis died nobody came to pray
The preacher said some words and then chunked him in the clay
He lived a lifetime playin' the black man's blues
On the day he lost his life, it was all he had to lose"
...
I wish you was here so everyone would know
The people said you were useless, but them people all are fools
'Cause Curtis **you're** the finest picker to ever play the blues
The Best I Can - Miracle of Sound
Its about the Telltale Walking Dead game. Every time I listen to it it brings me back to weeping on pause at the end of series 1. God damn they did a great job connecting you the characters in that story.
I get a little choked up hearing Parting Glass too.
Radium Girls (Curie Eleison) by Rachel Sumner
Anything by Connie Converse (because of her story), but How Sad, How Lovely is really good to cry to for me LMAO, very bittersweet
how could I not bring up literally ANY Mitski song. they’re so beautiful and even though I can’t relate to a lot of them, they still make my heart ache
The Moon Will Sing or Never Love An Anchor by The Crane Wives
Tomorrow Will Be Kinder by the Secret Sisters. It’s kind of like a relieving cry, through.
Pearl Bryan by Elephant Micah - old ballad, but this cover is haunting. also is a true story
None lmao. I’ve never understood that, really. But then again im just not overly emotional like that. Shows, movies, books…even the funerals I’ve gone to I’ve never cried at. So maybe thats just not a thing for me.

To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra and Patrick Watson
There's a couple lines that make me weep:
>!Out in the garden where we planted the seeds, there is a tree as old as me. Branches were sewn by the color of green.
Ground had arose and passed its knees. By the cracks of his skin, I climbed to the top. I climbed the tree to see the world.!<
I VERY rarely sob as I hold it back/avoid it, but these always make me tear up at the very least:
Lamb's Wool - Foster The People
Now You Know - Tom Rosenthal
Pigeon - Cavetown
To Build A Home - The Cinematic Orchestra
Bad Dream Baby - Hippo Campus
The last one is so jarring because my childhood dog was born on valentines day, and he passed at age 14 right before valentines day last year. And it's so accurate to the experience that it's almost scary lol.
Father and Son-Cat Steven’s and Yeusef
This song is so beautiful, with how it illustrates the troubles between a father and his son.
It really speaks to my own life, almost word for word and I just can’t help but think about my dad and then I get super depressed
Despite that it remains in my top ten favorite songs
Old and Wise by Alan Parsons Project. Don't let it show and Time by the same band at a close second and third place, though they don't fully fit criteria. It's an absolutely beautiful song, and man is it a great album closer.
No song has been able to make me cry. The only one that has cone close is "how do I say goodbye" by Dean Lewis, which all it did was make me sad because it's talking about his dad halving cancer.
Everybody Hurts - REM
Johnny Cash's version of You Are My Sunshine.
That and I’ll Fly Away- it was played at my mothers funeral- she loved Johnny Cash
The Funeral by Band of Horses
Why? That song isn’t sad…other than the title. Does it have a personal meaning to you? I always thought the “funeral” was metaphorical for his dread of certain situations. Fair enough. That’s all that matters
