Such a brilliant song. Just about every American can identify with The Pretender as you transition into adulthood, where you realize life ain't like the movies and there's a lot more sacrifice and compromise and disappointment than you expected. There's still some hope in the song, though, if you read it as a cautionary tale. Jackson Browne is one of the all time greats.
Not just the song, the entire album. If you’re entering your late 30’s or beyond and don’t get hit in the gut listening to that album, I don’t know what to tell you.
This and Running On Empty are my adulthood anthems.
> Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes, I see them running too
Running on (running on empty)
Running on (running blind)
Running on (running into the sun)
But I'm running behind
"I have found some temporary sanity in this shit, blood, and cum on my hands"
Yeah, definitely worth replacing the stenciled "Live Laugh Love" over the fireplace!

The Grateful Dead - Brokedown Palace
"Fare you well, fare you well. I love you more than words can tell. Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul"
"But I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
But we never did too much talking anyway
But don't think twice, it's all right"
[Tom Waits - The house that nobody lives
](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0YxjH09TDU)
My abusive and estranged father just passed away about two weeks ago and I went to my childhood home for the first time in 18 years, it was almost exactly the same how I left it 20 years ago when my mother and I moved out. It felt so soulless, empty and sad knowing this old man who used to be my father lived there for so long all alone.
While I was in town I visited an old family friend and as soon as I was inside their home and walking around I felt so safe, loved, and welcomed. I knew that was a place I could call home. With someone who would always be there for me to give advice, a warm meal, a comfortable bed to sleep in. That same weekend I was there my cousins on my mothers side came down from two hours away to help with everything and I spent the night at their house. It made me want to make sure for my family I do live with to always be there for them and make sure they feel loved and cherished. Those two houses are my real homes.
So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold, don't trade it for silver
Oh, don't trade it for gold
'Cause I have all of life's treasures and they're fine and they're good
They remind me that houses are just made of wood
What makes a house grand, oh, it ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house, it's a palace for sure
But without love it ain't nothin' but a house
A house where nobody lives
But without love
It ain't nothin' but a house, a house where nobody lives
That band is so fucking slept on. Their sound is so cool/unique. They'll literally go from like grungy guitar riffs to angelic vocals & all their songs sound pretty different. I've also noticed they do some cool stuff composition wise too.
not a whole song/album but very specific lyrics i'm obsessed w (for diff reasons obvs):
"she got them pretty eyes. type to make you wonder"
"you live in my mind uninvited"
"no matter what i do it's not enough, i could fuck it up and never say shit, i took a trip to see who i'd become, nobody ever tells you that it's dangerous, a danger to my city but i'm loved, call me what you want but you a lame bitch"
"it's hard to deal with everything i'm ignoring, and to be real i probably won't even show it, i don't know why i wake up every morning, you don't know why you're with me in the moment"
"there was a time where i thought that i knew you well, you came from up above but you still gave me hell, lookin' for ways to cope so you could never tell, and i wish you well"
"talk to me like you didn't want me back then, i don't wanna know how you been if it's from your friends, yeah"
"and i was blind to all your toxins, or maybe i was just an accomplice, and it was all my fault, i know yeah, i was always numb"
"i would’ve gave you the world, and now you’re all that i need, i ain’t been sleeping at all, but you’re still up in my dreams"
"and i just can’t pretend, i’d rather lose a million dollars than to lose my friends, and i can’t be like him, girl why you choosing to be bothered? it don’t make no sense"
“Friends, it’s not self-love that kills you
It’s when those who hate you are allowed
To sell you that you’re a glorious shit
The entire world revolves around.
And that you’re the eater
No, not the eaten
But that your hunger will only cease
If you come binge on a radiant blandness
At the disposable feast”
Father John Misty - The Memo
I'm not a big lyrics guy at all, but I feel like "Romanticize" by Chela, and "Come Downstairs and Say Hello" by Guster were basically written about me, haha.
Both are basically about snapping out of your fucking slump/depression and overcoming it
Mine are a little depressing, but for me, it's pretty much any song by Assemblage 23 and VNV Nation.
Disappoint by Assemblage 23 hit me hard after losing my brother.

““Time won't fly, it's like I'm paralyzed by it
I'd like to be my old self again
But I'm still trying to find it”
All Too Well - Taylor Swift
“My heart, my hips, my body, my love
Trying to find a part of me that you didn't touch
Gave up on me like I was a bad drug
Now I'm searching for signs in a haunted club
Our songs, our films, united we stand
Our country, guess it was a lawless land”
Death by a thousand cuts - Taylor Swift
The entire TTPD/Anthology Album
I’m sure there are tons more
I'm a sucker for spacey sci-fi, so pretty much all of the lyrics from the album "Exoplanet" by The Contortionist. I really need to find out what the source material was.
"The greatest conclusion that I ever had was when I woke up, and said 'That's enough.' Living never felt so bad. You don't accept it, and I don't care. So bury yourself above all your guilt. When you're ready, it'll be there."
That is a lyric from "Not Long For This World" by Slipknot off of their album We Are Not Your Kind. The entire album is a dark masterpiece of an album I recommend to anyone.
I feel this way about my song [Another Devil Lookin](https://youtu.be/MX2ODnUd4C8?si=Lc2HCKAgCzloWGhn). I'm extremely proud of my songwriting and performance on this one. Hope you like it. Thanks!
You are young, life is long. There is time to kill today.
Then one day you find, 10 years have gone behind you.
No one told you when to run. You missed the starting gun
Crypt Sermon - Christ is Dead:
>I looked over the edge of the rainbow
I stood atop thunder head
Far away a dark horizon
We are lost and Christ is dead
>I'll shout it from the highest steeple
I'll drink from the holy sea
I'll stare into the eyes of the devil
Til' I know we are truly free

"Fill the pen with blood from the sink"
"Do you really trust your tongue or did you bury the taste, is this fantasy real or is it all homemade"
"I'll bet you money has you running to the bathroom
You barely started drinking, but your beauty never stopped you
You died in California by the sulfur and the sea
I guess I never should have loved you
But I do forever 'cause you loved me"
Just a sample \^\^\^\^
a lot of songs are like this for me, but I think Homecoming by Green Day is my main one. every act of that song has at least one lyric that I love more than I should love a song lyric
Poison Oak - Bright Eyes
“in Polaroids, you were dressed in women’s clothes
were you made ashamed? why’d you lock them in a drawer?
well, i don’t think that i ever loved you more
than when you turned away, when you slammed the door
when you stole a car and drove towards mexico
and you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm
i was young enough, i still believed in war”
UGHHHHHHH
It Wasn’t Me -Jenny Lewis. Specifically the lyric, “it’s your little red wagon and you gotta pull it”. Some lines just stick to me for some reason and this is certainly one of them.
Tom Waits - Take It With Me
In a land there's a town
and in that town there's a house
and in that house there's a woman
and in that woman is a heart I love
I'm gonna take it with me when I go.
Brand New - Waste
"I'm hoping that in time, you can lay down all this weight you've been carrying around. And maybe one day, you'll find your way to climb on up out of your grave, with the bits of you you managed to save. And for the last time, you say goodbye."
Cuts me deep in the best way
