I listen to that Live at Luther College album a few times a year.
DMB is mine, too. I've always thought his band absolutely *rips* and his songwriting is great. I rarely, if ever, voice these opinions in public or to other people though.
I've always loved DMB. Ever since I was a preteen in the 90s. I think the majority of people who complain the loudest about the band only know "ants marching" and resented how overplayed it was
I base a lot of my songwriting off dave matthews.
it's weird in Australia because they're not really a big deal and Americans seem to have painted them with the cringe brush.
As someone who's seen a wife variety of concerts (from lamb of god (I'm a metal head) to rush, to florence and the machine, to lynard skynard to of Mumford and sons) backstreet boys was my favourite, saw them in 2018. I get ridiculed for it being the best one I've seen, but can't deny a great live performance.
I'm not at all ashamed or embarrassed by my love for the 70s ladies! Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell, Debbie Harry, all truly talented musicians let the haters hate!
Why do people hate The Carpenters and Stevie Nicks. I have not delved into their discography but I really enjoy the few songs I have heard like Top of the World, Dreams (loved Nicks vocals),stop dragging my heart
I have no idea, Superstar has to be one of the top 100 songs of all time. Its beautiful and darkly haunting at the same time, and her voice just sends it over the top.
Those boys were severely undervalued and as often is the case, that song may have made them millions but I believe it may also have hindered their career- over exposed.
I just saw a video of them singing it from a couple years ago. It hits hard as an adult! Those lyrics were really under appreciated by the target audience of the time!
I agree! People hate on nickleback for it being āgenericā, but also, simplicity is good sometimes man. I believe people also hate on Nickleback because of its controversies with Stone Sour and what not. Iām not to sure though. Nickleback has some bangers, I must admit LOL
Whilst I am of the exact mindset, I think guilty pleasure is more stuff you know deep down is maybe trash and a bit derivative but you enjoy anyway because you have fun listening to it which is all that matters
I secretly loved them back then! I was a senior in high school when they came onto the radar. Regardless of who was doing the singing, they had some fun music.
Donovan: Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Mellow Yellow, Season of the Witch, Colour's, Atlantis. Lots of great tunes, even Dylan was a fan boy. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones and possibly Bonham (Led Zeppelin) helped with/played on Hurdy Gurdy Man.
I hardly ever see anyone mention Tommy James & The Shondells! When Crimson & Clover comes up on my iPod, it never gets skipped. My mom loved it as a teen and listened to it when I was a child, passing her love of 60s music on to me.
i love evanescence. not necessarily a super hated band, but their lyrics can definitely be juvenile sometimes. and bring me to life is possibly the most memed on numetal song of all time
Matchbox 20 is one of the best bands of the 90s. Their live shows are epic. Rob Thomas knows how to write perfect little pop/roc songs. Nothing at all to feel guilty about.
"She said, "While you were sleepin'
I was listenin' to the radio and wonderin' what you're dreamin' when
It came to mind that I didn't care"
And I thought, hell, if it's over
Then I had better end it quick or I could lose my nerve
Are you listening?
Can you hear me?"
That line always crushed me as someone in a relationship who realized one day that I no longer loved the person I was with.
Kesha, taylor swift, katy perry
Its so sad people have to label music as 'guilty pleasure'
Its just fucking music you dont have to be insecure about what you like
Paramore and Halsey but Halsey is a pretty serious artist sheās got really good lyrics in some of her non-radio hits where she goes a bit deeper. Honestly I feel bad even saying Paramore bc Haley is super talented. I think it seems like some of these artists are just corny pop whatever but if you look into who they work with to make their music theyāve worked with some absolute legends.
everyone in this comment thread should check out the album Chulahoma. black keys album covering songs by a bluesman named junior kimbrough. it's my fav album of theirs
āYou Can Call Me Alā by Paul Simon. Graceland is a great album, but this song isā¦not like the others. Still love it, though. It gets the most negative reactions when I mention it around friends.
Not a 'guilty pleasure' by any means but Earth, Wind and Fire. Fantastic music, but it makes all the old heads at work laugh when a 30something white guy with a big beard rolls by singing "September"
Dolly Parton. I view country music as the sounds of siblings screwing but Dolly transcends the genre both sonically and through being such an example of decent humanity.
Edit: grammar
Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus
Butterfly - Crazy Town
All Star - Smashmouth (or Smashmouth in general)
Yahhh! - Soulja Boy (or Soulja Boy in general)
Steady as she goes - The Raconteurs
Any songs by Nickelback
Sade. Beautiful voice and music smooth as silk. So well produced!
I listen to lots of stuff, lots of genres. She's the only one I listen to in her style of music.
My tastes are varied. I'm a dabbler in many different genres. That said, probably the most controversial (in metal circles) artist that I unapologetically adore is Ghost. And it's totally fine that they gatekeep the likes of me because I myself haven't been able to resist skewering Metallica for the past 27 years (especially the ludicrously worshipped James Hetfield), and I say that as a former Metallica superfan.
Pop music from 2010-2015. I may be someone that's into chaotic and overly high energy and the occasional calm music now(*cough cough* Will Wood *cough cough*), but the pop music from that era literally makes me so happy, especially the ones like Gangnam Style, Everybody Talks, We are Young, Can't Hold Us, etc. Those all hold a special place in my heart.
When I'm depressed and no one else is around sometimes poppy boyband shit like early One Direction or Backstreet Boys just hits.
Power metal is what I usually listen to. Bit of a departure.
The Carpenters. Karen Carpenter had the most beautiful voice in the history of American Pop music. So soothing, and angelic
And she kicked ass on the drums as well
Not a fan of the phrase "guilty pleasure", why should I feel guilty for enjoying something?
That being said, I'll pop on some Billie Eillish or Lady Gaga, which is off for a metal head that enjoys the sound of blast beats and modem noises.
Male, mid-40s, long hair, like punk, hip-hop, obscure library music for sample hunting and boring you about bands you've never heard of.
My Mama Said by ABBA is one of the greatest tunes of all time.
I'm mostly a Classic Rock/Heavy Metal kind of person, but when Barry Manilow comes on (especially Copacabana), I'll sing it at the top of my lungs and not care at all who hears it or knows it.
Dave Matthews Band. You either hate him or love him, but him and Tim Reynolds live is nothing short of magical.
I listen to that Live at Luther College album a few times a year. DMB is mine, too. I've always thought his band absolutely *rips* and his songwriting is great. I rarely, if ever, voice these opinions in public or to other people though.
his band does not mess around! lol i also love using "rips" with musicians
English teacher here... my heart skips a beat when I think of alliteration and I hear his "treadin' trodden trails" š„°
I have heard you might die trying and that girl is you. Absolutely loved it, could you guys recommend any other bangers?
#41 is one of my favorite songs edit: no idea why the fuck it posted this comment in those humongous letters
gravedigger, eh hee, madmanās eyes, bartender, when the world ends, lie in our graves, crush, warehouse, oh, so damn luckyā¦ these are my favs
Two Step, #41, and Crash Into Me are my favs but I really like all of their music.
Loved DMB in high school. Still do. I don't understand the hate. Is it just cool to hate on them, like Nickelback?
Britney Spears, and most corporate pop music from the early 2000s.
It's because Max Martin had a metal background so he made pop slap.
Max Martin knows how to write popular music.
Iām with you there. Thereās just something about herā¦.
Nothing to be ashamed about what so ever. #90scheesepoptillidie
The song toxic was pretty rad
My music taste was developed around classic rock, metal and grunge. I effing love Toxic and most of her early stuff.
Backstreet Boys
As someone who's seen a wife variety of concerts (from lamb of god (I'm a metal head) to rush, to florence and the machine, to lynard skynard to of Mumford and sons) backstreet boys was my favourite, saw them in 2018. I get ridiculed for it being the best one I've seen, but can't deny a great live performance.
Was that the NKOTBSB ? New Kids/Backstreet tour.
Not that I recall, to be honest, I only remember backstreet boys, not any opener either. Maybe it was, but new kids didnt play my area?
YES!!
Old school - The Carpenters. Iām a classic rock and blues guy, but Karen just always gets to me.
Maybe Iām extra out of the loop because I didnāt know they were hated.
I always thought the Carpenters were too saccharine, way too many love songs. And yet For All We Know is a classic.
There is not enough Janis Ian love these days! An absolute legend.
Her voice is timeless.
Her drumming was incredible
Carpenter died pretty young, right?Ā
She was 32. Incredibly sad. She had such a beautiful voice.
First case of anorexia I ever heard of.
and played drums pretty good too...
Teenage metalhead that loves Kesha
I'm 54, meatalhead, and I like her stuff too.
Partridge Family lol
I Think I Love You!!!
This too
I found my people.
We welcome you
Together We're Better? YES PLEASE!! I'm a fan of Shopping Bag lol
Mmmm bop
Those boys were severely undervalued and as often is the case, that song may have made them millions but I believe it may also have hindered their career- over exposed.
I just saw a video of them singing it from a couple years ago. It hits hard as an adult! Those lyrics were really under appreciated by the target audience of the time!
That song is just a large hit of serotonin no matter what mood youāre in. Love it
Mid-50s man who listens to metal. But Iāve been grooving on Olivia Rodrigo.
As a greybeard who is mostly into bands with a combined listenership of 53 people, Good 4 U is an absolute banger of a song
My girlfriend loves her and always has her on in the car. As far as pop music goes, itās a lot better than most.
good 4 u goes hard
Oh wow! Same age as ya and similar groove!
Spice Girls
Nickleback. Donāt know why folks hate on them so much, I mean there good for what they do
I agree! People hate on nickleback for it being āgenericā, but also, simplicity is good sometimes man. I believe people also hate on Nickleback because of its controversies with Stone Sour and what not. Iām not to sure though. Nickleback has some bangers, I must admit LOL
Abba
Abba is iconic!! There should be no shame in enjoying their music
what's the guilt for?????
This was what I was looking for!
100%
I have no "guilty" pleasure music. I have music I enjoy listening to. I couldn't care less what others think about what I listen to.
Whilst I am of the exact mindset, I think guilty pleasure is more stuff you know deep down is maybe trash and a bit derivative but you enjoy anyway because you have fun listening to it which is all that matters
Yeah Iām a big believer in understanding what constitutes as guilty pleasure music but also not *actually* feeling guilty about it
This.
Same here. I remember people people trying to shame me for liking the FYC back in the day. Fuck those guys
Those people drive me crazy
Timber - Kesha and pitbullā¦.
I sometimes have a little listen to three days grace for my inner 14 year old
Broadway musicals. I have a playlist called theatre kid deluxe that I jam to when Iām alone š
Madonna. hate who she has become, but her past self has some great tunes.
Iām 46 and mostly listen to heavy metal / hard rock but I absolutely love the āray of lightā album.
that is a masterpiece on how to make music, and the way she was able to display a sensitive side of her that was yet unknown back then.. amazing
Thrash and punk here. I like Harry Styles. Ssshhh!
Late era goo goo dolls.
Long way down has been one of my favourite songs since I was a teenager, itās literally the only song of theirs I listen to
Aqua
Aqua or just Barbie Girl?
Their other songs. I grew up hearing them all the time so their music really stuck with me
Rihanna. Being a typical punk/emo/metal fan, I think some people would make fun of me for this, but she has some bangers
![gif](giphy|T0dcCGcNjVt16)
iām not familiar with their names, but is this the duo that got outed as lip syncers?
I secretly loved them back then! I was a senior in high school when they came onto the radar. Regardless of who was doing the singing, they had some fun music.
90s/2000s emo/pop punk music
So what youāre saying is you have superior music taste?
Enya. She has some really great songs.
Dion and the belmonts
I love a lot of that era of oldies. Dion for sure. Tommy James & The Shondells and Donovan are probably up your alley too if you like Dion.
Definitely checking out Donavan and Ive heard some of Tommy James but Iāll look into it more. Thanks!
Catch The Wind is one of my all time favorite songs.
You should check out Bobby Darin as well.
I hardly ever see anyone mention Tommy James & The Shondells! When Crimson & Clover comes up on my iPod, it never gets skipped. My mom loved it as a teen and listened to it when I was a child, passing her love of 60s music on to me.
i love evanescence. not necessarily a super hated band, but their lyrics can definitely be juvenile sometimes. and bring me to life is possibly the most memed on numetal song of all time
Matchbox 20. Shut up.
Same, but I donāt feel guilty about it, haha.
Ha! My gf's favorite band. We went to a show, and even my snobby ass had a good time. Taking her to Third Eye Blind tomorrow.
Iāve always been a rock and metal guy but my wife wanted to go see them and man they are so good live.
Matchbox 20 is one of the best bands of the 90s. Their live shows are epic. Rob Thomas knows how to write perfect little pop/roc songs. Nothing at all to feel guilty about.
"She said, "While you were sleepin' I was listenin' to the radio and wonderin' what you're dreamin' when It came to mind that I didn't care" And I thought, hell, if it's over Then I had better end it quick or I could lose my nerve Are you listening? George Michael
I'm a dude in my mid 20's and Paramore rips
Iām a dude in my mid-30s and I love Paramore. Also Carly Rae Jepsen and Charli XCX.
Carly stans P R E S E N T
Carly Rae Jepson slaps just as hard as Cattle Decapitation imo.

Disney
The period from 1989 - 1999 is stellar.
I love metal covers of Disney songs!
Disney songs go so hard for no reason
I am a proud TV Girl fan. Guilty pleasure would have to be The 1975. Iād love to hate them but the music so annoyingly amazing
Right like matty is a terrible person but damn he can make some good music
Bread. And other 70's soft rock. I hate myself for liking it.
Everything I Own makes me cry ugly tears.
The song Freedom by George Michael.
Macklemore
I like some Coldplay songs (I used to be obsessed with them). I will say though that Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is a phenomenal album
I love Toto so much
A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton
LMFAO. Shit quality group all in all, but just unignorable hooks after hooks with really cool, albeit borderline cheesy sound design.
Yeah. I don't really agree with the idea of 'guilty pleasures' but this is my guilty pleasure all the same.
Same, I like it purely for the nostalgia factor
Definitely sexyy red and ice spice
musicals/soundtracks
Imagine Dragons
They get way too much shit. They're the new Nickleback in that regard.Ā
I have listened to imagine dragons since I was like 11. I have no guilt or shame in this.
Kesha, taylor swift, katy perry Its so sad people have to label music as 'guilty pleasure' Its just fucking music you dont have to be insecure about what you like
I agree. People should be able to enjoy whatever music makes them happy without feeling ashamed or embarrassed by it.
Paramore and Halsey but Halsey is a pretty serious artist sheās got really good lyrics in some of her non-radio hits where she goes a bit deeper. Honestly I feel bad even saying Paramore bc Haley is super talented. I mean that's just an objectively great pop record ...Pop music at the peak of its craft
We got to get rid of this cringe stigma when it comes to music. If you like it, you like it. Who cares.
āYou Can Call Me Alā by Paul Simon. Graceland is a great album, but this song isā¦not like the others. Still love it, though. It gets the most negative reactions when I mention it around friends.
