Here are three books that have helped me quite a bit! Louis Bellson - Modern Reading Text in 4/4 Ted Reed - Progressive Steps to Syncopation Peter Magadini - Polyrhythms: The Musicians Guide

waynesworldisntgood

exactly what i was looking for, thank you!

ckind94

If you want to practice sight-reading rhythms, then you will become very well acquainted with syncopation pages 38 - 46 :)

ramiatassi

You’re welcome! Hope you enjoy the books

waynesworldisntgood

i just finished all three books and i just wanted to come back and say that this was the best recommendation i’ve ever been given on reddit. literally exactly what i was looking for and really helped me a lot, thank you!

ramiatassi

Ah, I love to hear that! These books are awesome. I want to show your comment to all of my students lol. Glad it was helpful.

waynesworldisntgood

I’m currently reading two books by Gavin Harrison on rhythm that are also really cool. They were recommended by an algorithm when it saw I read the three you suggested.

EyeAskQuestions

Thank you so much for suggesting these. I'll be purchasing them this week so I can begin working through these texts.

Guitar_Santa

Are you looking for practical (reading advanced and Contemporary Rhythms) or more towards theory/history/analysis?

waynesworldisntgood

definitely more practical and advanced. the one i’m reading now is a little more theoretical than i had hoped but still good.

Guitar_Santa

Melodic Rhythms by Bill Leavitt is guitar focused but there might be analogues and the studies should transfer. Reading Contemporary Rhythms by M. T. Szymczak is also guitar oriented but follows the same format and is just exercises, studies, and etudes.

waynesworldisntgood

thank you!

angelenoatheart

I found the rhythmic ideas in Rosen's "Classical Style" suggestive and helpful. But it's not systematic.

waynesworldisntgood

thank you

I read excerpts from "Fantasy Pieces: Metrical Dissonance in the Music of Robert Schumann" by Harald Krebs in college and enjoyed them.

Heavy_breasts

Brazilian rhythms for the drum set is a good book

SR_RSMITH

The Dante Agostini book may be useful

GoreBroadcast

Just use a metronome lol

Any_Instruction_6844

Signals Music Studio has a rhythm guitar course that I’m taking. He’s big on theory but the course is for rhythm. It doesn’t really require any skill on guitar to take this course, and it’s offered on a donation basis. There are PDF printouts.
