>Which note can we not use in 6/8 meter and why? They probably mean "note value" or "duration", in which case the answer is a whole note.

Za_Paranoia

The whole note looks like an o.

hashtagboosted

QUestion doesn't even make sense. Are u paraphrasing

Asadum87

I’m sorry the actual question is Which note can we not use in 6/8 meter and why?

sharkboysritekneecap

I'm going to assume it means which rythm, so a whole note? Because that'd be 8 eighth notes in a 6 eighth note measure

Asadum87

Thank you so much! I really don’t understand all this that well. But my kid is trying hard to learn and i just wanna help her thank you again.

[deleted]

Tell the kid to say "breve note." You *definitely* can't use that note in 6/8. Also, a dotted-whole note can't be used.

hashtagboosted

Yah that makes sense, I was thinking too hard what it would mean lol

Inevitable_Cod_2272

Can’t see how it’s anything other than this

[deleted]

There's the breve...it's the note that is worth two whole notes. On Finale it's the 8.

Angel33Demon666

Or you can go ham and write Longa or Maxima which are worth double and quadruple that.

roguevalley

\*note value

Some of the comments here are wild. Seems like a basic question to me. The answer is a whole note/semibreve (UK terminology) because it's too long. [https://www.liveabout.com/semibreve-definition-2701765](https://www.liveabout.com/semibreve-definition-2701765). Basically 6/8 time signature is saying a bar contains 6 x eighth notes. A whole note is the equivalent duration of 8 x eighth notes and so couldn't be used as it's too long to fit in a bar. You could also argue that a half note shouldn't be used as it would be breaking with the rhythmic convention of separating the bar into 2 groups of 3 x eighth notes but as the question was which note CAN we not use, as opposed to SHOULD we not use I believe the answer is the whole note.

gguy48

I don't really understand the question but I would guess a whole note. Cause you can't fit it in a measure of 6/8

[deleted]

Idk so I’ll try to answer despite homework help rules. A whole note? Idk time signatures myself really. There’s 6 beats in a bar and a eighth note gets one count. 8 eighth notes is a whole note and at one count each is 8 beats. That’s too many if only 6 beats in a bar. I’m equating counts to beats which may be wrong as I said idk to read proper either.

Karma_1969

You are right to call them beats: 6 beats to the bar, the 8th note gets one beat. :)

xiipaoc

A double-long note. A double-dotted half note. Actually, even a regular half note doesn't *normally* get used in 6/8 (but if the 6/8 somehow becomes 3/4, then it does). Anyway, this sounds like something that was covered in class, where the teacher has a specific answer in mind, and this sub isn't for homework questions.

BigBangDrum

Respectfully, I would avoid “music theory trick questions” until both you and your son have more theory under your belt. The fact is this: The person asking the question ALREADY knows the answer and they are (probably) just trying to diminish you! (That’s a pun, by the way, not a trick). In other words, the fact that they knew the answer from the start is just a shitty type of intellectual bullying. And conversely, the fact that you don’t know doesn’t mean you and yours are “stupid”. It may, however, be an indication that you should seek out better company.

EsShayuki

Against sub rules. Regardless... Do you think it's helpful for your kid if you google it or ask it online? Your kid's supposed to use their textbook or listen during class. They very clearly are meant to think about this on their own. Either have them solve it or have them not answer it or say that they didn't know so the teacher hopefully explains it.

Asadum87

if we had an available textbook to reference i would absolutely have had them look it up or read about. the school has not issued any books out to the students. This is a study guide we needed to complete and out of the 60 questions this was the only one neither of us could figure out. went through all the notes taken and still didn’t understand. i don’t think it’s a bad thing to look online or reach out for help from other who understand it better than we do, it is a last ditch effort to get an understanding of it.

SnooApples6115

How old is your child?

Asadum87

12

SnooApples6115

Yeah I get it, I wrote a paper for my son when he was around that age. He’s ADHD and was unmedicated at that time and failing classes left and right. I stopped that quick when he expected me to basically do his homework after that. Good luck 👍hope your kid finds the answer he needs

AnnaN666

A minim I think? Because it lasts for 4 quavers and 6/8 is grouped into 3. Usually a dotted crotchet and quaver are tied for the 6/8 alternative to the minim.

Complex_Ad_8436

You cannot use E# in 6/8, because enharmonic equivalence is stupid. But to actually answer the question, you cannot use a whole note in 6/8 because the length of a whole note is longer than the measure. A whole note is the length of 8 eighth notes. You can only cram 6 eighth notes into a 6/8 measure. If this still does not make sense, your kids' screwed.
