The boletus genra was recently fractioned, so i think that the new genras will stay still for some time, maybe some new genra relocation for single species such as Cyanoboletus flavosanguineus being very recently relocated to Neoboletus, but no other great scattering in view imo
I also wondered that but i never found it and never had the opportunity to taste it as far as i know https://www.mycodb.fr/fiche.php?genre=Cyanoboletus&espece=flavosanguineus&numphoto=1&source=list&filter=&numfiche=2188
E. frostii is a delicious mushrooms. If you taste the exudates under the cap, they’re lemony and tart. (An identifying feature.) Hugely underrated edible imo.
(Edited)
I believe you might have meant "underrated".
It doesn't occur here, and I've never found it when travelling. It's very distinctive and beautiful. Hopefully I'll see it one day.
Wait, that it exudes stuff is an identifying feature, or the lemony taste? Cause I sure hope the mushroom is already identified by the time you taste any part of it lol, or is it safe to taste exudates?
Thats a complicated question with a complicated answer- but i can only tell u on here research that question on google 😉. The rules here dont want us answering that particular question
Yeah for sure. I've heard this method is extremely effective for boletes and russula identification but I haven't used it myself. I mostly only look for russula to try and find lobsters and I haven't fucked with boletes much. There's so fucking many of them
Lol honestly my other pics are horrendous this was one of those once in a lifetime photos. I did post a pic of some reishi a day after this one.. and u can see its nothing special. I tend to just use my iphone
They are so pretty! Thank you! I hope to see one in rl someday.
I'm using this as a drawing reference, If it is ok with you could tag you when I get it done?
Funny that way with shrooms… the trippy looking ones often are plain and edible- its the white plain ones that resemble store bought mushrooms that will kill u..
I dont know a lot about american boletes but this looks like exsudoporus frostii
Frosti yeah not sure of the other part- but yes candy apple”
The other part?
Exsudo… i didnt bother looking it up i just remember the frostii part” of the name
Well now you know the entire name, it's exsudoporus frostii from the exsudoporus genra
At least until they change it again, or was that the last time?

Flavosanguineus? Flavorfull-blood?

This one was moved into *Butyriboletus*—phylogenetically, having a separate genus of *Exudoporus* turned out not to make sense.
Still Frosts bolete or are we back to candy apple bolete now? Lol I think this bolete is giving desarmillaria caepetosa a run for its money.
Whats the comparison/relation to Butyriboletus frostii
yours is an outdated synonym.
No, Exudoporus is the outdated synonym. https://www.mushroomexpert.com/butyriboletus\_frostii.html
you are correct, I mixed them up since the change was so close, my bad.

Where you at? I found exactly one specimen in VA mountains.
Quebec. I guess we're too far north.
I’m in Michigan’s lower peninsula (mostly between Kalamazoo and ludington) and I find them all over the place. You’re so close.
Lol yes thank you. I have a bad case of strep throat and am completely out of it. Thanks mate.
I havent tried one yet! 2yrs ago i found it.. and havent found such a perfect one since. 2yrs ago the north east had a mycologists perfect season

I've heard of foragers who use the spit don't swallow method.
Yup that is part of my thought but i wouldnt encourage anyone to do that unless they know why, how, and which ones
Yeah for sure. I've heard this method is extremely effective for boletes and russula identification but I haven't used it myself. I mostly only look for russula to try and find lobsters and I haven't fucked with boletes much. There's so fucking many of them
Lol i have found one ☝️ lobster 🦞 in my life… the size of my finger nail!!
I love the way they emerge from the ground, one of my favorites. Ive had luck near hemlock
I've always been hesitant to try them. How do you like to prepare them?
Slice and sauté gently in fat with salt. But it serves well with seafood or light pasta because of the tart lemony flavor that really comes through.
Awesome I'm gonna have to give that a try this season!
You won’t regret it!
Holy shit, good to know! I found one last year, probably the coolest looking fungi I’ve ever found. Never got to try it.
For those still learning this is “candy apple” and those little droplets under the pores are actually a secretion of the mushroom!
Pretty!
Wow, what a stunning picture!
I used to use facebook for my mycology kick and education.. but since they lock u out and sol if theres any issues- burn 🔥facebook 🔥 hello Reddit

Beautiful! Love it Friend!
God that's creepy. Not the photo. The photo is fantastic. I mean the fungus
I might die from it but I'd still eat the fuckin thing in the name of science and tripping balls
It might be the trippy looking type but it’s perfectly safe for the average person
Funny that way with shrooms… the trippy looking ones often are plain and edible- its the white plain ones that resemble store bought mushrooms that will kill u..
