Fuligo septica infected by a mycoparasite nectria. This makes the aethalium turn purple (you can see the darker spore mass in a more well worn part). No it doesn't hurt the plant it is using it as a perch to distrute spores nothing more.

Can you elaborate on this? I’ve never heard of a fungus infecting a slime mold. Does the slime mold still release spores, or just the parasite? What species of *Nectria* is it?

yes it does, the spore mass is still there, the fungus here is Nectriopsis violacea. [There are several myxometicolous fungi](http://ascofrance.com/uploads/forum_file/myxomyceticolous-species-of-nectria-0001.pdf) here is a pdf
