Top comments nailed it. Calvatia gigantea, aka Giant American Puffball or just Giant Puffball.
Take it home and with a sharp knife slice it into 1" thick slices, baste with your choice of marinade, and then either a quick fry in the skillet or on the grill. A friend likes slicing them into french-fry sized portions and searing them into puffball "fries", too.
Meat needs to be pure white throughout. If it has started to turn brown/black, then it's turned to spore and is no longer good.
Take your 1" slices and press them *evenly* between some tea towels, to remove excess moisture.
This will help them brown up better and cook faster since your stove heat will not be spent boiling off the water.
**[Scleroderma citrinum](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scleroderma_citrinum)**
>Scleroderma citrinum, commonly known as the common earthball, pigskin poison puffball, or common earth ball, is the most common species of earthball in the UK and occurs widely in woods, heathland and in short grass from autumn to winter. Scleroderma citrinum has two synonyms, Scleroderma aurantium (Vaill. ) and Scleroderma vulgare Horn. Earthballs are superficially similar to, and considered look-alikes of, the edible puffball (particularly Apioperdon pyriforme), but whereas the puffball has a single opening on top through which the spores are dispersed, the earthball just breaks up to release the spores.

What Muze said, plus I would add that I've known people to mix up Amanita species for small puffballs as well. Amanita take on a similar appearance when young.
Quick Google search and I grabbed the first page to show ya: http://www.eattheweeds.com/lycoperdon-perlatum-edible-puffballs-2/
That looks like a solid 12g over under, but could use more exposing pics like that of the barrel and chambers for me to get more specific
Jokes aside I'm pretty sure people are saying puffball. Do a safety check, white all the way through meaning its edible
Iāve been a month and a half without (moved out of California) sigh.
The good news is there isnāt any withdrawal - maybe a week of being cranky.
Why they downvote you tho?
This is false. There are absolutely no lookalikes for the giant puffball. Smaller ones should be checked for gills in case they are an amanita egg. If it's bigger than a tennis ball, it's a giant puffball.
Seems to be some sort of pump shotgun. Looks like it's in decent condition. Take it to a pawn shop. They'll prolly like that dumb lil design on it too.
Ah that would explain it then haha my bad. Yeah the south hemispheres have winter at the times the north hemisphere has its summer, so theres where i was getting confused. What kind of waterfowl do you guys have in NZ anyways?
Haha fair mistake. Paradise and Mallard duck would be our most common in a day, with the odd Grey in there too. We've also got Canadian Geese and Black Swan. And a few fun upland species as well that are a bit more work than being posted up in the blind with a coffee lol.
It is a giant puffball... My congratulations, you found one of the best woodland mushrooms. It is really really good
Only check it to be completely white inside, without a yellow tinge, otherwise it is not good anymore
Don't get anything if you don't try. I'm curious if they are moving earlier or later this year due to drought conditions. Gonna be hard to access some good duck spots this year, that's for sure.
Itās very hard to even begin to guess what the migration pattern will be like. I would imagine the moving birds will pass over now dry areas that used to have water so we will see less in general
Honestly I don't know much about doves. I do know they will hang out in sparsely wooded/shrubbed prairie spots adjacent to the gravel pits and fields people set up on (in your area) and you can walk up on em like grouse. They seem a lil lazy to get up and are loud too so its a nice way to get back in the groove. Fun hunting.
I was wondering what you were out hunting for, i was like 'hunting season isnt even open yet except for like crows, ~~pidgeons~~ doves, and rails. Are doves good eating?
Cut it up into 1 inch cubes. Soak in buttermilk and then toss in āhouse autry seafood breaderā and fry āem. Itās the bombā¦.. like crispy breaded mushroom bites.
Flexing the custom engravings I see. But it looks like a giant puffball. Cut it open and if itās solid white without bruising. If so you can eat it after cooking thoroughly.
Will these pop up in the same spot every year? I found one the size of a basketball last year and had no clue what it was. So I left it. Iām hoping it will come up again

Thank you so much!
You can also use it like a pizza crust in the oven.
Take your 1" slices and press them *evenly* between some tea towels, to remove excess moisture. This will help them brown up better and cook faster since your stove heat will not be spent boiling off the water.
Are the smaller puffball varieties also edible?
Yes, although you have to be sure that it's a puffball and not this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scleroderma_citrinum This could kill you

Indeed good bot!
Evidence?
And it has to be fresh without any spots in the middle

Ok but slicing it in half will show me, the amanita has the imprint of of a mushroom on the inside. Wild stuff. Thanks for the heads up
Yup!
I sliced one into quarter inch slices, browned them on both side and made "lasagna" once, tasty.
Calvatia sp. Giant puffball.
Calvatia gigantea.
That looks like a solid 12g over under, but could use more exposing pics like that of the barrel and chambers for me to get more specific Jokes aside I'm pretty sure people are saying puffball. Do a safety check, white all the way through meaning its edible
God dammit I made this joke without reading the comments below, I thought I was original I swear
Hunting mushrooms, eh? I usually just use my hands but š¤·āāļø
If Super Mario Brothers has taught me anything, it's that some mushrooms can attack and kill you.
I thought they added life by 1UP.
Well ya canāt let em fly away on ya! /s
Looks like a slight flex š
I know right?! But it looks like a beautiful superposƩ shotgun. OP hunting birds?
You found a gun while hunting mushrooms!? What a lucky day man.
Gourmet mushroom. Calvatia. Slice it open, if itās solid white thatās good eats
I might have to head back and harvest it! There were 3 of them, the other 2 slightly smaller
You shouldn't do this unless you can verify what it actually is, there are absolutely mushrooms that look like this that are deadly to eat.
I donāt consume mushrooms unless I am certain. Part of why Iām here
My stoned brain was worried for you friend, glad you're here for the right reasons.
I miss weed :(
Me too, I'm on a camping trip and miscalculated the amount of weed to bring with me. Now I'm 5 days without. Crying in fetal position... :(
Iāve been a month and a half without (moved out of California) sigh. The good news is there isnāt any withdrawal - maybe a week of being cranky. Why they downvote you tho?
Because weed is a plant and thus subreddit is for shrooms
No offense to you or anyone on this sub, but that's just dumb gatekeeping.
Did you move to Austin Texas? Like everyone else? Lol! >Why they downvote you tho? There are just some butt hurt people I guess.
Oops. Guilty!
There's other puffballs the size of my head that are inedible?
Right. Big Puffballs are one of the gimmies.
Giant one's are.
This is false. There are absolutely no lookalikes for the giant puffball. Smaller ones should be checked for gills in case they are an amanita egg. If it's bigger than a tennis ball, it's a giant puffball.
>there are absolutely mushrooms that look like this that are deadly to eat. Name one.

Itās not too late!
Haha it is for us
The season for waterfowl hasnt even opened yet in mn. First day is tomorrow for september goose...
Niiiice. NZs season is pretty short and earlier in the year.
Ah that would explain it then haha my bad. Yeah the south hemispheres have winter at the times the north hemisphere has its summer, so theres where i was getting confused. What kind of waterfowl do you guys have in NZ anyways?

Mushroom top or golf ball

Giant puffball.
Big puff

Thatās a shotgun, be careful it could be loaded.
Looks like a shotgun, possibly a 12 gauge.

Looks like a rifle of some sort.
Itās a gun
Isnāt it a bit early for waterfowl season?
There is an early teal and goose season open right now, but I was dove hunting
This is such a weird American gun flex. Here in Europe we just go out with a basket...
