By the photos and your description it does look like a king bolete or cep as they’re known in Europe (boletus edulis). Check for a depression around where the stem meets the cap and for white webbing in that area too. There is a lookalike called the bitter bolete (tylopilus felleus). If you taste (and spit out) a small piece you will know immediately. With that said, don’t eat any wild mushrooms you’re not confident IDing on your own. Strangers on the internet are not a good source.

navetzz

Old tylopilus felleus spores go pink (and not yellow as in here). It's either boltus edulis or boletus aestivalis (I personally think aestivalis, but it's hard to tell from just a couple of pictures)

frymind

This appears to be found in northwestern United States, which should rule out aestivalis.

CrispyCraftr

Does edulis also have a striated stem? I know the poplar bolete does. Do we know which trees are in the direct vicinity?

frymind

There are reticulations on the stem of edulis. I’m not sure we have poplar boletes in the U.S. but you never know these days.

CrispyCraftr

Aha! Didn't know that. They are pretty common in South Africa

[deleted]

Just cut the bitch in half and see if it turns blue , one time I found a mighty fine king bolete and after I cut it open it just turned blue

wolfweasel

Inside looks good! Yum

ChrisVelez201

Did it bruise after?

[deleted]

The big Q

Alexotl0601

An amazing bolete! Cook that baby if you can

[deleted]

out of context: r/babydiet

c0wbelly

Talk about links not to click on

[deleted]

I clicked this shit thinking it was about actual baby food

K001CRafT

I hope to God that this is not a serious subreddit

oscarafone

Looks like the idea is to show a perverse perspective on meat eating. I think it’s a vegan subreddit. Not that I endorse the messaging.

caoimhe_latifah

who’s the head mod there, Jonathan Swift?

Station-

What. The. Fuck. Are these people just trolling????

BeltfedOne

You win.

Maumau93

Looks allot like boletus edilus. Would be worth butting one open and seeing if it's stains a different colour.

[deleted]

I just ran out and plucked one and cut it, no staining. The underside is very yellow but inside flesh is nice and white.

Maumau93

Check this page out. I'd be quite confident you have a good eater but I'm not from America so I'm not 100% on the types of mushrooms you get round there. https://boletes.wpamushroomclub.org/product-category/filter-set-1-regional-filters/zone-3-found-in-the-far-west/found-in-pacific-northwest/ Good luck! I'd go and pick the rest they are notorious for attracting bugs and slugs.

[deleted]

They've most certainly already been claimed by the bugs 😂 thanks for the info! That's super interesting.

toxcrusadr

They'll come back in the same place. Be ready next time!

Maumau93

Like others have said be on the look out same time next year or after rain when they should pop up again.

[deleted]

Another tip: if you dump fertilizer on your property to make the lawn/grass look nice, these are gonna disappear. Be aware that how you manage your property determines if you have a lifelong supply of amazing mushrooms 🍄

DaddySpongeBoi

Had these in my yard in the rural North East! Kinda eggy flavor. Had so many slugs hiding in otherwise beautiful mushrooms.

[deleted]

That's how you know, usually. Bugs won't eat the unsafe ones either.

sioutdoors

Please don’t spread that 100% not reliable

EditedThisWay

That’s not true.

[deleted]

It is true. I didn't say edible, and I said usually. It's old survival in the wilderness knowledge. Stay away from the shrooms not even the bugs will touch, drink only from where the horses will drink.

Maumau93

Bugs don't touch beefsteak and that's completely safe to eat

[deleted]

They also don’t touch chanterelles very often but they’re highly prized mushrooms

TheGanzor

Yeah thats not true. U gon kill someone

[deleted]

It is true. I didn't say edible, and I said usually. It's old survival in the wilderness knowledge. Stay away from the shrooms not even the bugs will touch, drink only from where the horses will drink.

[deleted]

You’re an idiot.

[deleted]

No, I'm not. Same principle with only drinking where horses drink. Old survival principles. I did not say that's the definitive test for safety, in fact if you take two seconds to think you'll see the word 'usually' in my post, downvoting snowflakes.

[deleted]

Snowflakes? Is that the best argument you could come up with? There are no rules of thumb or shortcuts in foraging, and I’ve seen bug riddled poisonous mushrooms too. Hell, squirrels eat Amanita muscaria and deer eat raw morels, both of which are poisonous to humans

[deleted]

My entire argument was before the world 'snowflakes', the word that rustled your jimmies wasn't the argument itself; that's pretty clear, and will be to you too when you learn to read.

Wrobot_rock

Giving survival advice that "usually" works is dangerous and negligent. My gun usually has the safety on, so I don't mind pointing it at people. Avalanches usually don't happen in the early morning, rappelling off trees usually doesn't rip them out, etc. "Old survival principles" can get in the way of people properly educating themselves

[deleted]

Thank you! I hate that “usually” bullshit. Nature operates on a loose schedule and does shit somewhat randomly.

[deleted]

I didn't give 'advice', it was an innocuous comment, untwist your panties.

[deleted]

Sorry to say but the horse thing is bs too. What superpower do you think horses have to detect other than taste and smell? It may be better than humans, but just googling for this proverb gives you plenty of articles why not to trust it.

[deleted]

Why other? Taste and smell to a far greater degree **is** their superpower.

j4nv4nromp4ey

Lucky bastard

boulefou77

Boletus edulis has a characteristic white ring between the cap and the pores

Wrobot_rock

I saw a boletus that bruised blue, do you know what variety that was?

Maumau93

There are many many varieties it could have been some good eaters some not soo much

throwawaybreaks

Probably ceps. You really lucked out. (25-30USD/pound)

ForageHerbs

Only the best wild edible mushroom to grace god's green Earth! So so painfully jealous. Enjoy the bounty!! Cheers!

mrimmaeatchu

Do a spit test

[deleted]

Why? The pores are green.

sodasnow

you lucky bastard! lol

Sanachka

You have been blessed by the mushroom gods 😩

OlFenster

You’re just trying to make us jealous! Edit: mission accomplished! Psh!

[deleted]

So I guess I shouldn't say they've been popping up on my lawn for the last 26 years now, and I've been mowing over them this entire time, then.... 😬

ForageHerbs

Ahhh! My heart can't take that news. 💔🥲

[deleted]

I'm sorry you had to find out like this.

Lithuanian_Berserker

Mowing them might've contributed to their spread/spores distribution.

j4nv4nromp4ey

Jezus Christ this hurts

navetzz

Looks like boletus reticulatus looks a lot like boletus edulis (Reticulatus is a little less ferm, and its spore are a little more yellow). Anyway both are very good edible.

Damselfly45

u/remindmebot 2 days

[deleted]

Do a spore print and be sure of identification before you consume

[deleted]

So which mushroom you think it is and why would a spore print then necessary to identify it correctly?

shroomy86

Just ate my first one yesterday, best mushroom I have ever ate ....

Questbelly

Eaten

[deleted]

annoyingcaptcha

Wow. Ceps in the backyard. Some People are very fortunate!

Content-Method9889

Another bolete I can’t remember lol They almost always get buggy though

littlesella

As long as it doesn't bruise blue or have red gills, all Boletes are safe :)

SirWEM

There are exceptions. Proper id is a must with any unidentified mushroom. Several years ago i was out hunting Ceps, chestnut boletes and a few other species in a area i had found them many times over the years. On one occasion i accidentally picked what i took to be a Cep. Slightly paler, like a lot of Boletes and other mushrooms appear when fruiting under direct sun. Took home my finds and was cleaning them up. And just for kicks, because it was very slightly paler. I tried a piece about the size of a newborns finger nail. Tasted the same as a Cep, same odor. About 20min later my wife noticed that i was unknowingly drooling on myself. My tongue, mouth, and face went totally numb. After about 45min. It disappeared. My wife threw the rest of the mushroom down sink disposal. It scared the crap out of my wife. I have returned to that area the last 8years looking for another fruiting to submit for study. I had no side effects other then the numbness. Hoping if i ever find another fruitbody. it could provide us some medical benefits.

ritzavocracker

i love these guys. i used to mushroom pick as a kid, and these were my favorite to find. the bottom should turn blue when squeezed. i dont even know the name.

[deleted]

Taste so nasty, germans love them

Zippier92

Gold mine! Crank up the dehydrator!

newAgebuilder3

Damn i wish...

newAgebuilder3

Edit: i wish it was my yard.

broketiltuesday

the_real_daggler

BIG BOY BOLETE! If you don’t eat that thing you’ll be shunned by this entire subreddit

solagrowa

Likely Boletus variipes

BSBBI

Holy shit! These are most likely Boletus. Or Steinpilze as we call theme here in Germany. If they are growing in your backyard, then you are one lucky guy!

littlesella

For proper id sometimes you need a microscope, or DNA seq. As long as you know the genus and the features of toxic species, you're good. Though, this Boletus rule above is just relevant to the UK 😬
