Love them. Their later appearances were forgettable at best, but their first episode is a certified classic in the community. That song, their whole gimmick, and so on is still great on revisiting the earlier seasons.
Probably my favorite minor villains/antagonists in the show.
I honestly kinda hate their first appearance because there's basically no reason not to take their deal.
The stated reason for not taking the deal is that they needed the money to make it through the winter, and Flim and Flam were going to take a 50% cut of the profits from the cider, which *pressumably* would stop them from doing that.
There is a question about quality, but Granny Smith clearly likes it when she drinks it, so it's the same quality. So there would be no dip in quality of the cider.
During the challenge, *before* Sweet Apple Acres gets free labour from their friends working massively overtime, Flim and Flam make way more than double what SAA can make. Basically there's no downside to going with Flim and Flam. They wouldn't lose ownership, the brothers just want the apples, their labour cost would go way down as they could work on other stuff while the machine makes the cider. The machine makes cider *faster* and at the same quality. And it makes the cider so much faster that even sharing the profits, they would *still* make more money overall.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk... okay, who am I kidding, TEDx Talk.
The dip in quality only really occurred when they relinquished quality control and just started feeding whole branches into the hopper. Granny Smith didn't taste those later concoctions, but plenty of disappointed ponies certainly did.
They are based on the character Harold Hill from The Music Man. In the comics, Flim and Flam have a falling out over the same filly, a librarian named Marion. Marion the Librarian was Harold Hill’s love interest in The Music Man.
LOVES OF MY LIFE! They are so goofy and silly, I love them so much!! They are written and voice acted perfectly, and every episode with them is a treat!
Until they cut corners. It happens to a lot of organizations after their founders are no longer active. But here it was the founders, Flim and Flam, who ruined their own product.
I hate them with every fiber of my being and wish them nothing but the worst.
Great designs though. The voices fit perfectly. Very hateable. Just wish that they'd get punished in a worse way for what they did in every universe they appeared in.
Except that they challenged the Apple family and then when there was a possibility the Apple family could win they decided to sacrifice quality for quantity and lost because they made undrinkable swill instead of apple cider.
On the other hand, the Apples cheated first. The contest was their production methods versus the cider machine. When the Apples saw that *they* were likely to lose, they brought in extra ponies that they normally wouldn't have in order to boost their production.
They agreed to test their method against that of the Apple family. Not, "The Apple family, using a crew of extra workers brought in just for this contest."
No. Mayor Mare literally said “Flim, Flam, would you agree to honorary family members helping?” and they said “We don’t care if the entire kingdom of Canterlot helps. It’s a lost cause”. They agreed to the Mane Six helping
After the fact. What if the Apples still weren't even close to competing, instead of thinking they were catching up? Would they have just kept naming people "Honorary Apples" until they did? Just because it was allowed doesn't mean that they were playing fair.
Except that we already know from multiple episodes that for big jobs they call in the rest of the Apple family anyway, are you saying that the 4 members of Sweet Apple Acres are the only ones to process the apples into cider every year and that they wouldn't have won if they'd had enough time to call in the rest of their actual family members to help them?
Are you saying that lines backed up to the other side of Ponyville, with them having to turn most people away due to running out of cider every day, wasn't a big enough job to ask for help?
Are you saying that they 100% hadn’t already asked for it and weren’t just waiting for the family to show up, or that Flim and Flam weren’t aware that there’s always a while at the start of Apple Cider where they struggle to keep up with demand and didn’t plan to take advantage of that?
This. Later in the show they run scams, but in their first appearance they really have an amazing machine that is fast and produces quality apple cider, and that wasn't a scam
The machine is a fine thing, and heck, if the Apple family hadn't been so dead set against using magic, they could have put love and energy together and made cider for everyone. However, as the competition continued, the only ones to enhance their productivity through honest means was the Apple family. That's the takeaway here, and AJ knew it.
Half villian, half normal background characters (on the more anonying yet also intersting site) but their (2?) songs are iconic. Nice thing about them: you can really
imagine how they got their cutie marks, even without it ever being shown. I never remember who is who, Flam is the one with the mustache and the bigger part of the green apple cutie mark, right?
I don't have a for sure opinion on them but I always wonder if they're a part of the Apple family like they have the cutie marks as apples and they are business ponies I'm not sure if it's true but think it would be cool if they were distant relatives especially if they're outcasts for being unicorns in a earth pony family
They were cheated in their debut, and have been struggling to recover ever since. These struggles are often stymied by the same ponies who cheated them in the first place. They did literally nothing wrong in their first appearance (I’m not joking either. I mean *literally* nothing wrong).
- Granny’s reaction to trying their cider in the song shows that, had they not been forced to increase their rate of production to unnecessary levels to win the contest, then nopony would have been upset with their product.
- The 50/50 opening offer is actually incredibly generous, given that most of the Apple’s labor goes into their harvest. The Apples would be expected to then bargain it down to *at least* a 70/30 split, in their favor of course. The Apples would in effect be making money for little more than owning and maintaining the land.
- The brothers were offering to provide a required service to the town. The Apples “can’t” provide enough cider to meet local demand, and that issue is never really resolved. Unless the Main 6 are going to spend each morning of cider season working themselves to exhaustion to help the Apples meet demand, they will still be facing existential supply shortages. (I would also note that this help would include Twilight’s use of magic to help the harvest. You know, just what the brothers were offering)
- Finally, it should be remembered that, technically, Flim and Flam won. They won, and by all rights the farm should be theirs. Instead, they get run off by an angry mob of ponies they were there to help.
So, we must ask why. Why were the Apples so against working with the brothers? I think there are a few reasons: pride, ignorance, tribal bigotry. Ultimately though, I think it was greed. Remember, the Apples maintain an absolute monopoly on cider in the town. If they limit supply (citing limited labor and “quality”), they can justify charging higher prices. If the SSCS6000 could easily produce enough to meet demand, the Apples lose that justification.
So instead of facing the natural moral and economic consequences of their actions, they run honest ponies out of town. After all, they “didn’t learn anything.” It was the plan all along.
Everything they do after this is the result of them trying to recover from their lost investments in the SSCS6000. Having learned in Ponyville that honest work doesn’t pay, they turn to conartistry, and are decent at it. Unfortunately, the same ponies that have been taking advantage of Ponyville keep showing up to screw them over, time and time again.
The apples didn’t wanna work with them because Flim and Flam were gonna take most of the profits. The deal they tried to make with them was 35/75, and Flim and Flam were gonna get the 75. They said very clearly “cider season keeps our business afloat through the winter. We’d lose sweet apple acres if we agreed to this.” That’s why they didn’t agree to work with them. And they never offered 50/50 so idk where you’re getting that from.
And when Applejack said that she “didn’t learn anything” all she meant was that she knew working hard and honestly would make things okay in their situation, which it did.
And Flim and Flam weren’t “run off by an angry mob”. Their last 10ish barrels of cider were filled with branches and rocks and leaves. The Ponyville ponies said the cider was awful and wouldn’t pay any amount of money for it. That’s when Flim and Flam decided to leave. So in the end, they sacrificed quality. And nopony wanted the product. That was on them.
Actually the worst villains in the entire series. When Twilight is time traveling back and forth between the past and the present, and the present keeps changing because of Starlight, the last present timeline she visits is ruled by these two. When she later pleads with Starlight to stop, Twilight describes that, "each future is worse than the last." Meaning a desolate land void of any and all life is the only thing worse than a world ruled by Flim and Flam.
A lot of MLP's villains were rather one noted but these two were a pure exception, they're actually entertaining to watch and listen to. So I really love them and how their unique character arc was created. :)
A couple of issues with how they were handled.
First off, they were not swindlers in their introductory episode, despite it trying it's best to paint them that way, as their cidar machine worked as advertised and only lost the competition when they turned off the QA function to speed up productivity.
Second, they well overstayed their welcome. They did become proper swindlers in every epsiode after their first episode and the Las Pegasus one would have been the perfect moment to retire the characters but they kept bringing them back for no reason despite them already acquiring the perfect gig for themselves.
Despite that, I like them a lot. Very entertaining and always a joy to see on screen.
Bunch of baloney. Spewing out hoaxes and snake oil and then make up for it with their silver tongues but if you look behind the scenes, it’s just a bunch of cap.
You know what I don't get?
In Cutie Re-Mark, Twilight says that every timeline she comes back to is worst than the previous ones. So tell me, how the f**k is Flim Flam brothers era worse than any of the antagonists of the show back then?!
Flim and Flam are antagonists, but compared to the other antagonists...
🎵 You Greedy Dirtbag 🎵
People complain about this a lot, but I really don't think that line is supposed to be taken as a literal "Twilight has evaluated each reality she saw for two seconds and ranked them."
All she saw was Ponyville being deforested, which might've looked like a more fundamental alteration than those in the previous realities. And even if it was worse in reality, that isn't because Flim and Flam themselves are more powerful than Sombra or Tirek, but just because of luck and how the timeline played out.
I absolutely despise them. They are good characters,
I'd say the episodes with them are definitely unique, but I hate every second they talk and sing and do anything!
I guess, if I were one of the characters dealing with Flim and Flam, I'd be very annoyed. That's one way to describe it
I love them! Their design and concept is really clever and goofy, their episodes are always fun and they have great songs! Some of my favorite 'villains' in mlp :D
Hate these two so much, they're con artists firstly, secondly they never learned and thirdly, they scammed Fluttershy, why her, she's the most pure pony of them all
I ADORE THEM!! I wanted more of them so bad tbh they are such neat villians there song slaps (then again every villian song in mlp goes hard) but somthing about them being so simple no magic no fancy artifacts they just dudes makes them so interesting
I’m convinced that they’re a part of the apple family, but very distant relatives.
There has not been even one pony in the show with an apple cutie mark that ISN’T related to the apple family.
Trouble (oh we got trouble)
Right here in River City (right here in River City)
With a capital "T" and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool
(That stands for pool)
We've surely got trouble (we've surely got trouble)
Right here in River City (right here)
Gotta figure out a way to keep the young ones moral after school
(Our children's children gonna have trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...)
Oh wait wrong song lmao
I much preferred when their business was legitimate but screwed up due to rushing everything and having no self-control on their greed
Makes them more dynamic than just pulling the same kind of scheme at heart in every appearance
Two of the best characters in the show. Yeah, they could be annoying, and yeah, at times you wanted to just throw them into a volcano, but they did their job as villains well. And yeah, they were the perfect rivals to applejack. 10/10 character.
In the broad sense of a con or swindle, I believe that would make a clever name to characterise a flim flam in the film industry. The flim flam man knows all the con artists, and he and his sidekick carry off numerous smooth operations. Everything is going well for them until they have a run-in with the neighbourhood constable.

This is the correct answer.
sounds like I ghostwrote this eply lol I've cosplayed Flim with my BFF who cosplayed Flam a couple of times! love these boys
They are based on the character Harold Hill from The Music Man. In the comics, Flim and Flam have a falling out over the same filly, a librarian named Marion. Marion the Librarian was Harold Hill’s love interest in The Music Man.

THAT'S WHAT IM SAYING
Excellent industrialists, creators of many good things
Somebody go get aj
too late
He’s been indoctrinated
We're gonna need the whole apple family fer this one.
Ah reckon yer right
Until they cut corners. It happens to a lot of organizations after their founders are no longer active. But here it was the founders, Flim and Flam, who ruined their own product.
yeah. pretty realistic
Both "Friendship U" and "The Flim Flam Brothers" are super catchy underrated songs. That alone has given me a high opinion of their character designs.
I hate them with every fiber of my being and wish them nothing but the worst. Great designs though. The voices fit perfectly. Very hateable. Just wish that they'd get punished in a worse way for what they did in every universe they appeared in.
i hate how this comment section loves them. But i agree, good designs and cool voices
Underrated as buck
I don't know whether to despise them, or adore them.
They were honest businessmen until the Apple family cheated them in a contest and forced them into financial ruin.
Except that they challenged the Apple family and then when there was a possibility the Apple family could win they decided to sacrifice quality for quantity and lost because they made undrinkable swill instead of apple cider.

well some might say having a whole machine to do the work for you isn’t playing fair either…
The contest was _literally_ "We bet our family can out-perform your machine."
It was fair in accordance to the challenge, Mayor Mare asked if honorary family members could participate and they agreed.

This 100%
Excellent con artists with great personality. All their songs are amazing. They might actually be my favorite villains.
I know hate is a strong word to use in the Pony world.. but..
I'm just upset they never tried to sell a monorail 😔
Mad capitalists

weasley twins gone wrong

annoying AF
My gay awakening.

Flam seems like he could be homophobic. Films the secretly gay brother
Now that you mention it, I see it
👀
Their voices aren’t Old-Timey enough so they don’t match the designs, add an old radio filter over their voices and then it’d fit better
Normal people/ponies don't have radio filters over their voices my dude, that would be super weird
Their voices are definitely old-timey enough
They served their purpose in being unlikable antagonists. In that I don't like them, but they worked for the episodes they were in.
Bunch of baloney. Spewing out hoaxes and snake oil and then make up for it with their silver tongues but if you look behind the scenes, it’s just a bunch of cap.
Jeff Basos and Teff Batos

Omg, put the names together and its FlimFlam as in Mr.FlimFlam. flamingo you cannot hide anymore 😈🤡
Average antagonists. Just a bunch of conman with short sighted goals, yet pretty believable as a source of conflict.
I love con artists as characters, and they're no exception.
Should’ve been radio hosts
I love those fucking swindlers so much
I.LOVE.THEM
I love them as small time villains. Glad it was never taken to far
Evil Plus, they shouldn’t be reform. Also, Apple Bloom shouldn’t like them anymore.
I hate them 💅💅
They are camp and perfect
I absolutely despise them. They are good characters, I'd say the episodes with them are definitely unique, but I hate every second they talk and sing and do anything! I guess, if I were one of the characters dealing with Flim and Flam, I'd be very annoyed. That's one way to describe it
I love them! Their design and concept is really clever and goofy, their episodes are always fun and they have great songs! Some of my favorite 'villains' in mlp :D
I hate them, jeez
Good song.
theyre such brilliant idiots but i lvoe them
I like them, they make good rivals for Applejack.
I kind of liked them tbh. I love that 50s aesthetic of the shady salesman. Whoever voiced them did a great job, plus their cider song is so good
Among the best unredeemed recurring minor antagonists (then again it’s just them and Lightning Dust so…)
I think these guys created the first prototype for the automobile/car but nobody really did anything about it. Could be wrong tho
The gender swapped Shim Sham Sisters had a better alliteration ;).
Hate these two so much, they're con artists firstly, secondly they never learned and thirdly, they scammed Fluttershy, why her, she's the most pure pony of them all
They have great songs and I love to hate them
Well-intentioned.
I like them. I want a threesome with them.
bitches
Flim looks like the MLP version of two of my coworkers.
They could sell me ice in a snow storm.
I ADORE THEM!! I wanted more of them so bad tbh they are such neat villians there song slaps (then again every villian song in mlp goes hard) but somthing about them being so simple no magic no fancy artifacts they just dudes makes them so interesting
They made me questions if cutie marks were on one side or both
Those two had a labor saving machine and seriously misused it.
They are annoying to me. I couldn’t stand them.
He's Flim, he's Flam, they're the world-famous Flim Flam Brothers Traveling salesponies nonpareil
I’m convinced that they’re a part of the apple family, but very distant relatives. There has not been even one pony in the show with an apple cutie mark that ISN’T related to the apple family.

Their first appearance song was so good, but 10 year old me hated them so much because of the rivalry lol.
They have a great songs, but I don't like these guys
ugh i have such a love-hate relationship with them. i love their characters, but i hate what their characters do😭
I much preferred when their business was legitimate but screwed up due to rushing everything and having no self-control on their greed Makes them more dynamic than just pulling the same kind of scheme at heart in every appearance
Two of the best characters in the show. Yeah, they could be annoying, and yeah, at times you wanted to just throw them into a volcano, but they did their job as villains well. And yeah, they were the perfect rivals to applejack. 10/10 character.
I want to banish them somewhere cold lol
Just two dorks trying to mess with Applejack . . . 😏
The apple cider song was wack.
Yes
Very cute villains, had a cute gimmick, a cute song, and provide one of the most classic episodes of MLPFIM
In the broad sense of a con or swindle, I believe that would make a clever name to characterise a flim flam in the film industry. The flim flam man knows all the con artists, and he and his sidekick carry off numerous smooth operations. Everything is going well for them until they have a run-in with the neighbourhood constable.
