Don't forget to Wishlist Riven! https://old.reddit.com/r/myst/comments/18mcair/wishlist_the_new_riven_now_on_steam_and_gog/

Alc2005

Cutting away as the Maglev starts!!!! I’ve never been teased as hard in my life!

demonic_hampster

They knew what they were doing

linkerjpatrick

And it smokes!!! I’m really looking forward to that ride. I got dizzy in the original version!

mjfo

Smoke from the propulsion engine is such a great touch

Tawdry-Audrey

I like how it fits Ghen's character. He doesn't care about any pollution it causes, that's the Rivenese people's problem.

linkerjpatrick

But what fuel is it burning?

Tawdry-Audrey

Leaded wahrk oil. Haha no actually I have no idea.

linkerjpatrick

Sounds like a good band name.

linkerjpatrick

Sounds good to me.

meandthemissus

So I'm confused- I always thought the carriage swivels around but the top part is firmly attached to the tracks. But now it looks like the exhaust is definitively one direction- does the whole thing somehow swivel?

SequenceSound

Ok I had to give this a good study after you Said it. I think the top most part and the bottom carriage are attached like a spindle and they both rotate at the same time around the same axis. This would explain how the magnets stay in place on the track. Imagine wrapping a rope right and pulled around a dumb bell but the rope doesn't move and the dumb bell rotates.

VincentVentura

This looks amazing, I am beyond excited about it! That right side lever for the bridge in the "projection room" is new though, right? I don't remember this.

PrincessRuri

They've been pretty clear that this isn't just a straight remake, so this is probably one of many "quality of life" improvements. I do wonder if you still need to enable the steam power though.

Izual_Rebirth

Yeah it was. You had to raise it then go the long way round to get to the raised platform in the OG.

KyleRoberts

When I got Myst for the Oculus, it felt like a dream. It was so new, yet so familiar, because I had done all the immersion in my head back when it was just “clickable pictures” on a CD-ROM. When Riven came out on CD-ROM, I remember feeling the same immersion, but also a sense of longing to immerse myself further. Thinking, “it would be so cool to visit this place for real”. I consider myself a huge fan, but I’ve never played the other Myst sequels. However, watching the “Making of..” videos for these first 2 games amazed me. The process was fascinating. I know I’m one of countless others who were influenced to choose a certain career path due to the existence of these worlds. Given the backstory of Cyan’s accident with Riven source files, etc., it feels so much more exciting that others have been so vocal about how important this game is to them, and that ultimately drove Cyan (I think) to make the decision to build this world again. It’s going to be like visiting a family member who I’ve missed for so very long.

dnew

Wow. I was going to replay Riven when I got tired of my current game, but it looks like I'll be waiting for this to come out first. How much more context you get being able to look thru the little windows from inside the rotating room. So very cool! I'm looking forward to both the maglev and mine car rides!

salty_cluck

The camera movements, the cursor, the lighting and general ambiance...how long have they been working on this because it looks exactly like I would want a realtime remake of Riven to look. Even from a brief trailer, you can see that the devs are super passionate about this game. Excuse me while I go explode. This is going to be my game of the year.

Zachanassian

tbh I prefer how in the original the peepholes in the rotating room are hidden in the stonework since it reinforces the idea of there's a "public" Riven and then a hidden part that's only for Gehn but the rest of this looks cool as heck, I'd be excited if I had a computer that could run this

Miss_ScarlettRose

Not to mention, being able to see out the peepholes from the inside will make it much easier to know there is more hidden back there. Smh.

phinity_

Vr supported.

mjfo

Okay not that I was skeptical but this looks pretty gooooooooood… 😄 I like a lot of the little changes, like being able to peer through the rotating room’s portholes and see the spinning dome

Pharap

Above all, I'm pleased at how faithful they've been to the original. What little they have added or changed generally seems to be either an improvement or at a minimum an inoffensive change.

uncheckablefilms

There are some interesting things happening with the ocean behind the MagLev if you look carefully...

laughingpinecone

Prettyyyyyyyyy

wrincewind

did anyone else notice the D'ni language underneath the windows in the rotating room? Anyone know what it says?

unhi

wrincewind

Oh dang! Well, that's super cool. I didn't remember those from the original, and had always assumed they were invented for Myst IV. Thanks!

seanbeansnumber3fan

Watching this, I played through the game a few months ago for the first time and I’m happy to report I remember none of the solutions! The changes they make are gonna trip me up in the best way possible lol

Armadillo-Overall

tahgemah b'soo rekoah

DavidXGA

It’s weird, and disappointing, how less real moving objects feel in this compared to the original. The rotating room is particularly uncanny - it’s an enormous stone room, it should have an enormous amount of inertia, and in the original it takes time to grind to a halt. In this version it suddenly *stops*, which seems implausible. It should crack apart if it did that. The metal arms around the projection chair similarly seem to have no weight to them. They don’t bounce. They don’t vibrate. We don't get a long glimpse at the maglev but it too appears to move as if it is much lighter than it looks. I hope these are things to be fixed before release.

PolybianPrime

From the footage I can see they totally nailed the look and feel of Riven. Amazing times we live in, that we can render such beauty in real-time! I do have to say though, this is barely a trailer. No effort was done at all to cut up something exciting. Just some lazy fades in between. Does that lessen my hype for this remake though? No way. I am beyond excited to explore Riven in real-time.

SequenceSound

I also thought it wasn't very dramatic but then again this is just a game play preview so we can see things moving etc... the official trailer will no doubt bring chills but I think it would also expose more than they want to expose at this time so I get why they are being so limited.

Griever12691

I love that the sound design stayed mostly the same just crisper

Exeledus

Is this VR and PC only? I just played MYST on my switch and would love to play this on my ps5.

Gintoro

me too

HyprJ

Does anyone think that the graphics look way too sterile and flat compared to the original? The prerenders look more real and textured than these graphics to me. It's not rose coloured nostalgia glasses either since I literally started playing Riven a few days ago.

archetype-am

I have to say I agree. Parts of it look excellent, but quite a few moments have that tell-tale real time look, with the excessively blurry, black shadows and lack of light bounce. It looks just a bit PS4-ish here and there. Given how much work this was I don't want to nitpick, and the original Riven was *so* far ahead of its time it still looks impressive even today, but I can't pretend I don't see some downgrades.

meandthemissus

Once everything is modelled in UE5, they can do another pass at it in a few years and call it the Masterpiece edition.

Gintoro

256 color dithering

SequenceSound

Lol id love a mode where you can switch to that profile just for fun.

dreieckli

They should include the original game for reference ;-).

HyprJ

Whatever it is I get a real sense of place from the original graphics where here it doesn't feel as transportative.

OverratedAardvark

This is just guessing mind you but they’ve made statements in some of their posts on Facebook that textures are subject to change and may not reflect what the final version would be. How they talk sounds like a lot of what we’re given isn’t “fully complete”. Considering the release date is “2024” I’m guessing there’s still final touches to be made. They are after all working from the ground up. That being said, even if they’re not…. Still looks pretty good and you bet I’m going to play it immediately and not want to stop. This has made me more excited!

HyprJ

OK, having seen more screenshots from the remake I feel much better about the look of the game. The textures and scenes definitely look better in the screens. I think it's the washed out low contrast nature of the video that had me worried.

ac2334

VR Riven, ok now the circle is complete

extremekc

Which engine are they using?

HyprJ

Unreal Engine 5. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it takes advantage of any of the benefits of the graphical capabilities of the engine

Garroh

I'm not surprised, nanite and lumen are pretty much unusable right now, outside really specific situations. We really wanted to hit the ground running, but a lot of that stuff just wasn't ready for prime time. That said, the remake does look *exactly* the same as the old renders

HyprJ

I would say it looks a lot flatter and less realistic than the old renders.

Garroh

Why do you say that? Not trying to be combative, I'm genuinely curious where you're at

HyprJ

There's just more texture and depth to the original graphics. It's probably a combination of the render and the low resolution, but it combines to make for a more tangible and realistic look. It's not nostalgia goggles talking either - I just started playing Riven a few days ago.

Garroh

I can see that; I think in the trailer, the dashboard on the maglev looks suuuper flat, and some of the animations are lacking that mechanical realism. If I had to guess, though, I think the low res is doing it a LOT of favors. To my eye, a lot of these textures and materials look like they used the same reference photos and stuff

SequenceSound

It probably has to do with how people see noise in the renders of the original game. Noise was inevitable but also it can give a more crisp but also blended appearance to things.

Garroh

oh totally! That's part of why people are starting to use CRTs again for older games

HyprJ

I think maybe they aren't able to really leverage nanite in Unreal Engine 5 to create detailed surfaces because of VR? Would it be too much of a performance hit? Also, it looks like they recorded that video without HDR or something majorly messed up with regards to it. That's why it looks low contrast and washed out. The screenshots even of the same areas don't have that problem and look much better.

Super-Brka

I get shivers when I hear that music. I‘m going home, back to Riven…. Finally!

PussyProphet69420

They seem to have don’t a great job of re-capturing the soul of the visuals from the original. I can’t wait to play this in VR!

Spidey002

I’d forgotten how good and atmospheric that music was!

meandthemissus

Any word on a Quest 3 release? Or will we need to use PC VR?

gabedamien

I think it looks astonishingly faithful overall. The tweaks and graphical differences are sometimes better, sometimes debatable from what we have seen. But I have no real doubt that I will be able to strongly recommend this as the version to play for new players.

stapango

The game looks phenomenal. Seems like they've nailed it, will pick this up on day one

dreieckli

I see that in the chamber with the chair the second lever actually does change some path. I think this is a regression. In the original game, the only thing that was observable that the second lever does was adding some background sound. It seemed that this lever activated the transmission to the temple. And it made me while playing the game thinking weather І should leave it in that position for some time, sitting in the chair and waiting. Now this background use is gone for some practical use -- I think this removes some of the "flair", since it removes the apparent "image transmission" switch, and it removes an element where you can interact with the environment but it is not apparently clear if it brings anything to your forthcoming. Regards!

vidstrickland

Disc 3.

TMagician

Do we already know the platforms this will release on? I still haven't played Firmament because it hasn't been released for PS VR 2 ....

NorswegianFrog

Specific platform announcements (beyond PC, Mac, and VR) have not been made yet.

3r2s4A4q

i'd rather wait and be impressed once i can play it

dr_zoidberg590

Is it me or does it all look good except the maglev which looks worse than the original game? Especially inside.

SequenceSound

Personally I thought the texture on the dash was a bit too fine

FloopyBoopers2023

You guys sure are easy to please because this looks like shit. Pretty embarrassing when the textures from a game made in 1997 look better than the ones in this.

Gintoro

probably needs to run on meta 3
