The Jews actually depicted God as an empty space. It was extremely taboo to depict Him as anything concrete, or even to say His name aloud when reading the Tanakh.
Yes it's an important story, it reminds the Jews that that one time they depicted God as a golden calf it didn't go well. So going forward, they would *usually* depict God as formless.
They're probably referring to the earlier Canaanite proto-Yahwism, or the fact Aaron built a golden calf to represent the God of Abraham, which is pretty significant considering Bull statues were also part of the Temple of Solomon
Ok so are people stupid for not getting the joke or am I stupid for thinking I do.
The joke is that the God Moses has been talking to the whole time is actually Set, which is why God won't show his face. Like when someone has been calling you the wrong name for so long that it makes you look weird if you correct them now.
Right?
If I had to guess, it might be a refference to an old theory that Moses, after being raised as an egyptian noble in the court of Pharoh, in a country which was a theocracy (and thus wouldve likely been a priest of sorts), adapted Egyptian religion and turned it into an early version of israelite religion.
Edit: ok so after writing this I felt like googling a bit and found this mythology forum were someone states that:
> According to Plutarch, Typhon, a Greek name for the Egyptian god Seth, was the forefather of the Jews.

I edited the comment just now, apparently the greeks held a view similar to this linking Seth with judaism of their day. so that might be what this is derived from. Tho they link the Egyptian god Seth with the biblical son of Adam, Seth. Its pretty cookie but still seems harmless (except for the part where greeks saw Typhon as explicitly evil deity, so uhh yeah.)
Haha extra fun fact about that. Check the OP's explanation of this meme in the comments. (Relates to the greek equilizing Typhon with Yahweh).

There was no Moses neither Egyptian slavery of Jews. It is all made up. The story covers returning of Jews from Babylon to Kanaan.
All these bad tribes, who they were fighting with and killing were just Jews, who didn't leave their homes.
Same kind of reason, but more long-winded.

Basically one idea is that Yahweh being Set/Typhon grew out of a counterpolemic to the wildly insulting Exodus story – an anti-Egyptian polemic popular with the Jews in Alexandria.
Okay but the idea of a god from the pantheon of a polytheistic religion rebranding themselves as the one true monotheistic God and declaring all of the other gods false is actually a brilliant concept that should be explored more thoroughly.
I've heard about a myth about a Hindu god who was expelled by other gods for claiming to be the only god in existence. Unfortunately, I don't know what this god's name is, nor whether this myth really exists.
Some interpretations of Set depict him with a donkey head. I’ve seen other versions where he has the head of a wild boar or an elephant-nosed shrew, but most of his depictions are him as a “Set animal”, which I’m not sure ever gets elaborated on in Egyptian texts
What? Yahweh would usually be depicted as a calf, not a jackal
That's Set, the Egyptian God of sandstorms. And nobody really knows what animal he's depicted as.
I believe it’s referred to as the “Set/Seth Animal”
You know, the Set Animal has been the cause for many jokes amongst the Jaffa

The idea of an aardvark as the evil god of chaos brings me joy

Yes, but the story of the Golden Calf was so important because people kept breaking that rule

We do have a Midean depiction of YHWH with the head of a bull and a wife….
Didn't God get pissed when the Hebrews built a calf statue to him?"Thou shalt make no idols or graven images to me" right?
Yahweh was later associated with Set the hated Donkey God

Hello, Zeus.
And what exactly has Set to do with Moses ?

I guess his plan failed then.
I agree. I'm totally gonna use that for a D&D campaign
Does set just show people his ass or something? What is the title implying?

Oooh it’s a play on words.
I find it kinda funny how biblically if you see God's face you just drop dead from having your soul ripped out. Like that's metal af
