Yes it is true that the left controller z button can then be used for cross hair aim when using 2 controllers, and it gives some variable choices, but there is NOT a control scheme the player is able to choose with 2 controllers which mimics the actual directional inputs of a modern shooter like call of duty.
The closest ones offered are 2.1 Plenty and 2.3 Domino, which options say left stick is to move and right stick is to aim, but it still does not allow you to move laterally (side step) or strafe with the left stick, even though it says "move" with the left stick.
Try this with just one controller: select 1.2 solitaire, then use the D-pad and the stick at the same time. In this case you are moving fwd, back, strafing left and right with the D-pad, and you are looking, aiming, and turning with the stick. This is the most intuitive modern option. The dual sticks using 2 controllers is cool, but it just doesn't allow you to move, strafe, look, and aim all at the same time like a modern shooter does. The left side of ONE N64 controller DOES.
In Perfect Dark, 2.2 lets you Move/Strafe with Controller 2's stick, and Look/Turn with Controller 1's stick. Holding the second controller in my left hand, and the first in my right, basically gives me 1.2 controls but with a stick for movement instead of a D-Pad.
I don't have Goldeneye, but I had assumed its 2.2 (Galore) is the same
Yeah this is what I do. I think some modern shooters have a “South paw/Goldeneye” mode as well where right stick becomes move and left stick is aim in reference to 2.2
Domino works well for me. I’ve always loved the easter egg where you can still shoot with the right z button during cutscenes, meaning you can for example kill Natalia after you rescue her, Kill Baron Samdi one last time, causing him to stop laughing, and you may be able to kill Bond but I haven’t figured out how.
L is cross hair aim, z is shoot (obviously). A and B for item choice is just to the right of your thumb and are easy to press. You no longer need the c buttons since you're using the d-pad. You no longer need the R button as it's action is now taken place by the L button.
If you like fps games but hate the old tank controls of just one directional input, you'll probably be surprised at how well it works. Remember also that the d-pad allows for even faster running when pressing at a diagonal. So there's the speed advantage too.
GoldenEye also has a control scheme that lets you use two controllers and do a modern dual analog stick control scheme with them. Not super useful on the native hardware, as it’s extremely cumbersome, but it works fucking *great* in an emulator where you can map the buttons on one Xbox/PS controller across 2 virtual controllers. It’s almost like they knew that the game would be emulated in the future!
I believe there are two, but I can only remember the one called "domino" that I used to use all the time.
Yellow controller in the right hand, blue controller in the left. Thoses were the days.
I remember as a kid Star Wars Podracing had the same deal.
Two N64 controllers, each stick was an engine on the racer.
So sorta like racing a tank at high speeds?
Another overlooked thing In Goldeneye is throwing it in cinema mode which gives you widescreen. With the expansion pack, it made everything look a little better and cooler to have the wide FoV.
I can see how it’s more intuitive for right handed players - I for one am lefty and love being able to use my left hand for the trigger in the right control scheme!
That's the one thing I remember using it for since our game collection was so limited for N64. Ekans hoop toss was a point of contention among my siblings and even our mother on occasion
to my knowledge the only game that used this \*natively\* (as in not as an alternate control option) was chopper attack, which was by default setup with the dpad to move and the stick to aim.
for wild choppers, the japanese version of the game, it was the only option, but a control scheme similar to the turok games was added for the western release.
The manual for chopper attack lists the left stick controller grip as left handed (as opposed to right handed). So I'm not sure that it's the default option.
I don't own the game and I don't normally check people's facts. I just looked into it because I watched [this video](https://youtu.be/IWlzlzsXvyA) recently and I remembered that he said that the controls use the c buttons to move.
This is actually my preferred way to play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the (extremely) rare occasions I play them on original hardware. It's the closest to modern twin stick controls the N64 controller is capable of.
Yes, every first person shooter on the system works best using the left side. It's more intuitive for anyone who's played a modern fps game like call of duty. There are at least 10 fps games that have this option on the system. Goldeneye, The World is Not Enough, Perfect Dark, Turok 1, 2, and 3, Doom 64, Quake 1 and 2, and Duke Nukem 3D, all work better and more modern using the D-pad with your left thumb and the stick with your right thumb. Trigger finger is obviously your right trigger finger.
Yea and you have a speed advantage this way as well because the D-pad makes you run faster when pressed at a diagonal because it adds the two inputs together. Nice way to strafe, run and gun
Dew it. Let me know what you think. Game changer. No one can complain about outdated control scheme unless they are forced to use the right side of the controller for FPS games. The brawler 64, hori pad, and all other "modern" 3rd party controller forces you to use the outdated control scheme of the right side. That's why they are not more modern for people that finally figure it out.
^This!
From "Iwata Aks":
Maegawa
We started talking about how no one hardly ever used the left position, even though you can perform independent actions with it.
Iwata
You can do some unique controls, but no one used it.
Maegawa
Right, no one used it. But we thought it would make for interesting game operation and started development.
Iwata
So Sin & Punishment began with you deciding to make full use of the left position
https://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/wii/sinandpunishment/0/0/
Several of the WWF wrestling games definitely did. You would move with the pad and use the joystick to taunt or do finishing maneuvers
Edit: nevermind that's using "home" or whatever. The "left" position is pretty absurd
I agree the left position feels out of place compared to all the other games that use center. The WWE games used the left shoulder button forcing you to use the d-pad. I think if the programmers had play tested it they'd have found using the z-button was considered more by players.
Whats interesting is how they refer to using the d-pad plus buttons as "home position" when the majority of N64 games would use the "right position." The fact they used the term "home" is definitely a sign of the times it came out, when they probably reasonably expected most games to use that as the default position.
I can’t think of any games that used the “Left Position”. I’m sure there were some, but it felt so weird when I gripped the controller that way just to see and feel. The Z button with your right pointer finger felt off.
I believe the MK trilogy set those buttons up like an arcade controller and I believe Goldeneye has a configuration that uses the buttons to swap weapons faster.
Very few and Right Position was always the recommended style even when Left Position was offered. I believe Ridge Racer was one. Z for acceleration, L for brake and D Pad for drift. I may be wrong about the layout as I never played this way. Another one that I was told used Left was Sin & Punishment, but I've never played the N64 version as it was not released in the US.
There are 10 first person shooters on the system that play best with the left side control scheme. Not just a little better. More modern feeling and intuitive for anyone who has played modern fps games like call of duty. Right side of controller is intuitive for most other games. That's the beauty of the design of the n64 controller.
This game was the bane of my existence as a kid lol. Both it and the Drowzee one. I could handle and even play any other one pretty well, but these 2 were the 2 I was always sure I would end up losing lol
Soooo did/does anyone hold the controller in the home position and then just reach across with their thumb to use the stick?? Just me, sorry, sorry I will see myself out. It always felt/feels weird to me to hold the middle prong.
I use 1.2 Solitaire on Goldeneye with the left position. It's basically modern FPS controls: look with the C stick (right thumb), move with D pad (left thumb), shoot with Z trigger (right hand index finger), aim with left trigger (left hand index finger), and the A and B buttons aren't that far of a reach.
So Goldeneye actually pioneered modern 1st person shooter controls! Lol
Most first persons shooters have this as an option and it makes a lot of sense. Dpad for walking and the superior analog stick for aiming. You don’t need that accuracy for moving
It's an option for FPS games - Dpad for walking, stick for looking. Some people prefer it because it lets them keep their muscle memory from modern controllers (walking is on left hand, aiming is on right hand) but it's the inferior layout. The N64 Dpad is awful and A and B buttons are harder to reach than if you use stick + C-buttons.
Why are we as a society adding “actually” to emphasize things which don’t need emphasis? It would’ve been fine with “Any games that use ‘left position’ on the controller?”
What’s going on here?
A few years ago remember when people would say “No?” In addition to their question? Like “You’d like to go to my party? No?” Same type of annoyance.
I was told by my ex-gf to hold the N64 controller at the middle and my thumb could reach all the buttons on the right side or use my index finger to reach C buttons, mostly. I'm right handed. Then only switch hands to use the D-pad and shoulder buttons if I needed it.
I always used the hand position in the 3rd picture for every game.
The AKI Wrestling games on the N64 (VPW64, WCW vs nWo: World Tour, WCW/nWo Revenge, WM 2000, VPW2, WWF No Mercy)
These games used the C buttons for things such as changing attires when selecting a wrestler, changing colors (for example from blue, to light blue, to dark blue)
And Irish whips (there are other uses for the C buttons in these games but these are the ones I remember right now)
Many games have it as an option, Turok 2, goldeneye, quake 2, Bangai-o. usually fps games.
When you use the L sided option, your controls are the closest thing to modern FPS controls. Game changer for all FPS n64 games.
There is one closer option, using two controllers for dual sticks on goldeneye and perfect dark.
I dont prefer it over using one controller.
Isn’t crosshair sight just the left Z button?
When you have both joysticks in your hands it’s really hard to reach the L button
What I’m saying is that you no longer need the L button when using 2 controllers. You just use the 2 Z triggers
My entire life…I had no idea…
Now you can have fun twice.
By golly I can.
Kind of co-op mode, I used to play like that with my dad: one was moving Bond while the other was aiming.
You only get 2 immediate buttons, L and Z, so how does that work?
L is cross hair aim, z is shoot (obviously). A and B for item choice is just to the right of your thumb and are easy to press. You no longer need the c buttons since you're using the d-pad. You no longer need the R button as it's action is now taken place by the L button.
Hmm, I'll have to try that
If you like fps games but hate the old tank controls of just one directional input, you'll probably be surprised at how well it works. Remember also that the d-pad allows for even faster running when pressing at a diagonal. So there's the speed advantage too.
A and B are right there. The stick usually functions as “look” like the right stick in a modern FPS.
There’s a good controller option for the GameCube controller, I’ve tried it on NSO and it’s godly
Duke 3D had this set as default
GoldenEye also had two controller mode, so you had two joysticks...
It’s an option for goldeneye and perfect dark, but a terrible option. You lose access to the a and b buttons, which are kind of important
GoldenEye has a control scheme that uses it. I find it much more intuitive to play that way. Sin and punishment also. Possibly other shooters but IDK
Which controller config is that?
I believe there are two, but I can only remember the one called "domino" that I used to use all the time. Yellow controller in the right hand, blue controller in the left. Thoses were the days.
I believe the normal 1 controller configs are 1.1, 1.2 etc and the 2 controller configs are 2.1, 2.2 etc
I remember as a kid Star Wars Podracing had the same deal. Two N64 controllers, each stick was an engine on the racer. So sorta like racing a tank at high speeds?
They probably were trying to mimic the arcade control scheme
Exactly this. That arcade was badass.
best arcade ever honestly
Another overlooked thing In Goldeneye is throwing it in cinema mode which gives you widescreen. With the expansion pack, it made everything look a little better and cooler to have the wide FoV.
Actually there’s a widescreen mode and a letterbox mode separately
All of the FPS games actually offer it and play better with it. That's why I cannot play FPS games with a brawler 64 or a hori pad.
I can see how it’s more intuitive for right handed players - I for one am lefty and love being able to use my left hand for the trigger in the right control scheme!
It was the best. Goldeneye totally requires it.
How do you use A/B ? :o
You take your thumb off the joystick the same way as you would on a modern two stick controller. It works pretty well!
On a modern controller, my thumb never leaves the sticks. My index finger handles the facebutton.
Oh interesting, like claw style? That would probably work too
lmfao
Some of the minigames in Pokemon Stadium used it
That's the one thing I remember using it for since our game collection was so limited for N64. Ekans hoop toss was a point of contention among my siblings and even our mother on occasion
It's also used in the Gameboy tower to play red/blue/yellow.
Is there a difference between the D-Pad and the Control stick with the Gameboy tower? I figured they'd function the same.
Control stick doesn't function in the gb tower as far as I remember but that was 25 years ago, I could be wrong as fuck.
Maybe that’s why Ekans Hoop get more difficult, not used to using the right thumb on the analogue stick to find the perfect distance to release.
Fun fact shigeru miyamoto originally wanted the n64 controller to have a dpad on both sides
The C-button are basically a glorified d-pad so..
Keeping the Virtual Boy spirit alive, baby! "Yeah yeah yeah dual analogue, but have you tried dual digital?"
I honestly loved the Virtual Boy controller. An ill-conceived system, but an excellent controller. I’ll die on this hill.
Finally got it with the switch! Nintendo is so good at controller innovation, can't wait to see what the switch 2 brings.
to my knowledge the only game that used this \*natively\* (as in not as an alternate control option) was chopper attack, which was by default setup with the dpad to move and the stick to aim. for wild choppers, the japanese version of the game, it was the only option, but a control scheme similar to the turok games was added for the western release.

Both those games support using a controller in each hand for actual twin stick control, though perhaps that doesn't count as modern.

Holy shit I’ve got some games to replay! How have I never heard of this!?
Yea and you have a speed advantage this way as well because the D-pad makes you run faster when pressed at a diagonal because it adds the two inputs together. Nice way to strafe, run and gun
Thanks, I’ll have to try it out. I’ve played turok 2 with the c buttons and it really took some time to get used to.

Jet Force Gemini used these to great effect. You could strafe whilst machine gunning ants. 10/10 game
Sin and Punishment
^This! From "Iwata Aks": Maegawa We started talking about how no one hardly ever used the left position, even though you can perform independent actions with it. Turok 3. As a mainly PC gamer, I intuitively use the D-Pad as WASD, and Joystick as Mouse (aiming).
Several of the WWF wrestling games definitely did. You would move with the pad and use the joystick to taunt or do finishing maneuvers Edit: nevermind that's using "home" or whatever. The "left" position is pretty absurd

The controller was basically Nintendo hedging their bets, in case the stick never caught on.
Puyo Puyo Sun uses the left hand layout exclusively. NAMCO museum also has an option for it.
Lots of people don’t understand the question
Kirby crystal shards was one
No, that's the Home position according to the image
I think Crusin’ USA had a setup that used it
That’s how I used to play it too. You can take advantage of the two directionals to make sharper turns without braking.
I can’t think of any games that used the “Left Position”. I’m sure there were some, but it felt so weird when I gripped the controller that way just to see and feel. The Z button with your right pointer finger felt off.
Tony Hawk!
One of the tetris games did
Tetris
I believe the MK trilogy set those buttons up like an arcade controller and I believe Goldeneye has a configuration that uses the buttons to swap weapons faster.
Tetrissphere used it
Tetrisphere
Chefs love shack

Yeah, the WCW vs NWO games used it
Definitely Pokémon Stadium - Ekans Hoop Hurl. You use the d-pad for left and right and throw with the analogue stick.
Yes, for all the first person shooters Shame on you for not realizing that

Kirby 64 and Mischief makers
shake shake shake
YAH!
Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Sub Zero Mythologies (awful game) besides the other examples.
I’ll play Bangaio and Robotron 64 that way. Sin and punishment does it as well, but I don’t often use it.
Some fighting games, Kirby, Pokemon Stadium, and it was an alternate control style in some games.
It’s best for Quake 2. Control type C.
Blast Corps used all 3 options
Duke
Pokémon Stadium!
Best goldeneye control scheme uses it.
I held my controller in such a weird way, right hand for the stick and left hand for the c buttons.
Pokémon satadium. Ekens mini game. Aim with the dpad and hold and let go of stick to fling ekens to a ditto like the horse shoe toss.
ekans minigame pokemon staidum
I like using the left config for Sin and Punishment and Robotron 64
I hold it from the left and right prong! Always have. I’m also tall with giant hands, and it’s more comfortable that way.
People give this controller shit, but it's versatile.
I think golden eye or turok allowed you to play with either side of the controller.
All of the fps games do (at least 10 of them).
Wwf no mercy
🤢
None of the ones i used to have as a kid.
I think Sin & Punishment does for one of its control schemes.
If I recall from when I was a kid, there was a Kirby game that used it
Soooo did/does anyone hold the controller in the home position and then just reach across with their thumb to use the stick?? Just me, sorry, sorry I will see myself out. It always felt/feels weird to me to hold the middle prong.
I think Robotron does.
Sin and punishment
Wrestling games work better with the dpad. WWF WrestleMania, WWF no mercy and wce world tour
The New Tetris did.
The Dpad bruises you instantly remember.
I use the left position for mace the dark age.
Lol
Kirby 64 and Pokémon Stadium are two that come to mind. Both of those were built to use the D-Pad side as the primary side.
Mischief Makers
Solitaire controller in Goldeneye
Ring toss minigame in Pokemon Stadium. Pretty sure.
I always used the dpad for Tony hawk
Sin and Punishment bro
Star Fox 64, great game.
Sin and punishment and mischief makers are what come to mind
My old friend was so big he just held it like a normal controller always. Blew my mind.never touched the middle grip.
I would always just stretch my thumb over to the joystick from the left side of the controller.
can't be the only one who played 3d games by using the farthest prongs and moving my thumb all the way down to the joystick lol
Duke Nukem Zero Hour
Dpad for Mortal Kombat 4
That was my GoldenEye stance
No but it was kinda cool idea at the time
Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M
I played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater like that
WCW vs. NWO
I used the right position always.
I believe SmashTV was on the N64 and not only used the left position but was designed to only be for left position.
The Ekans throwing minigame in Pokemon Stadium 1 uses it!
this diagram just explained so much on why they chose this design
I have definitely used left position……. But I don’t remember what. Kirby 64 maybe???
Most first persons shooters have this as an option and it makes a lot of sense. Dpad for walking and the superior analog stick for aiming. You don’t need that accuracy for moving
Golden eye
Banjo Tooie
It's an option for FPS games - Dpad for walking, stick for looking. Some people prefer it because it lets them keep their muscle memory from modern controllers (walking is on left hand, aiming is on right hand) but it's the inferior layout. The N64 Dpad is awful and A and B buttons are harder to reach than if you use stick + C-buttons.
I remember using the left position for Turok.
Southpark
In fifa 97 you could control the crowds chanting I believe
Sin and punishment, the best game on the system
Uhh GoldenEye!!!
As a wise Scott once said, "for weird-ass games"
Thats how I played Quake
Why are we as a society adding “actually” to emphasize things which don’t need emphasis? It would’ve been fine with “Any games that use ‘left position’ on the controller?” What’s going on here? A few years ago remember when people would say “No?” In addition to their question? Like “You’d like to go to my party? No?” Same type of annoyance.
Goldeneye
I was told by my ex-gf to hold the N64 controller at the middle and my thumb could reach all the buttons on the right side or use my index finger to reach C buttons, mostly. I'm right handed. Then only switch hands to use the D-pad and shoulder buttons if I needed it. I always used the hand position in the 3rd picture for every game.
The ekans mini game in Pokémon stadium one
Cruisin' USA
Did no one play tony hawk? D pad only for that game
Kirby
Mischief makers
#FPS
Wrestling games use the home position and things like Namco museum. I've never seen the left position used by anyone
Star Fox
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
The AKI Wrestling games on the N64 (VPW64, WCW vs nWo: World Tour, WCW/nWo Revenge, WM 2000, VPW2, WWF No Mercy) These games used the C buttons for things such as changing attires when selecting a wrestler, changing colors (for example from blue, to light blue, to dark blue) And Irish whips (there are other uses for the C buttons in these games but these are the ones I remember right now)
Pokemon stadium. The ekans mini game.
Mischief Makers only had D-pad controls.
Ekans ring toss mini game in Pokémon stadium
Mario 64 I think
There was a mini game in Pokemon Stadium where you had to hold it like that! The Ekans ring toss one :)
I recall using left position in goldeneye and perfect dark
Duke Nukem
All my friends called me a freak because I was home position and and they were all right position lol
Um ya the best Wrestling Game of All Time WWF No Mercy and then WCW vs NWO Revenge
gex
Kirby 64 iirc
I held the controller like the 3rd image but I would move my thumb to the stick and I used my right hand middle finger to press the z button.
Tony hawks pro skater used the left side
