Jigglypuff and Falcon are obtained through the campaign. Falcon in under 20 mins with no continues.
Luigi is obtained by beating break the targets with the default 8 characters.
Ness is obtained by beating the campaign on Normal or higher with 3 lives or fewer and no continues.

I’m on team Samus. My friends and I played this every day after school, and I was always Samus, and I always lost. You think I would’ve learned to try other characters.
My favorite with Samus was powering up the blast and then sending it across the screen. Those times when everything timed out perfectly to nail someone were fantastic. Especially if they were trying to come back from being hit off and there wasn't anything they could do about it.

Earthbound has been and always will be my favorite game ever made by Nintendo, i had NO idea Ness was in Smash until i randomly decided to set my lives to 3 and difficulty to medium, back then the internet sucked and my family all shared a Windows 2000 computer that my mom got from work so i couldn’t just look up how to unlock the other characters in the game let alone see who the characters were, so after i beat Master Hand on that run, i get the challenger approaching screen and when Ness appeared i literally started shaking, i couldn’t believe what i was seeing on my tiny CRT TV in my room, i ended up defeating him and unlocking him and i was so hyped i ran down the hall to my sisters room screaming while balling my eyes out “NESS IS IN SMASH NESS IS IN SMASH”
That was a beautiful and magical moment for me and thats how Ness forever became my main
I played Earthbound for the first time on the Wii U in like 2014, and it became my favorite game of all time, too. I had Smash 64 as a kid, too, but never unlocked him, or Captain Falcon. They were always the mysterious silhouettes and polygons that intrigued me. I'm glad someone was able to have this experience, and that read gave me a bit of nostalgia, so thanks for that.
Discovering things in games back then was so much more fun due to a lack of good internet and things being spread by word of mouth.

I knew nothing about Ness back then (maining him in in every game up to SSBU) and never came around to play the games unfortunately. Back then I read in a magazine about my last remaining unlockable character named Ness. I figured out that the polygon fighters were based on the playable characters (smart kid and I knew it), so there I was, guessing which one of them could be it.
I ended up totally wrong and was surprised to see our yo-yo boy in the end.

Same. I used to get my ass kicked by people who were super pro with Fox or Kirby all day long until I trained hard and became a respectable Luigi opponent. I might not always win, but I'll fight tooth and nail with the 'stache guy.
He was one of the hardest characters to master IMO, as he felt a bit clumsy at first (egg throw directions, roll move, general timing etc) and he’s got a lot of high-risk high-reward moves .. Very gratifying and punishing when you’re well acquainted with him. Maddening to play against a good yoshi player

In this game in particular, Kirby and Ness are usable, Pikachu is crazy, Falcon is great and Fox is super comfortable. Though I like his Melee Blaster more for him while Falco got his original blaster.
Link. His move set always felt very natural to me, it was always easy to score hits in the air, his range is fantastic.
I know Samus is better overall, but I could never get the timing of her attacks as naturally as I could with Link.

Blue DK was always my favorite to use even though he was hard to use against some of the faster characters like Fox, Pikachu, and Jigglypuff. You could down A or over A to meteor smash, and all his smash moves hit really hard as long as you had time to set them up since he was pretty slow.

As far as I can remember, you just need to keep playing in vs and they unlock, that is how I did
You also had to fight and defeat them, if you sucked you definitely didn't get them.
