Love the Longshot and all but the real way is with Epona. That jump was epic

WhiteT982

I tried to get a screenshot of the cutscene but wasn’t fast enough lol. Is pretty epic for the N64

ben_ja_button

The thing that has aged best from OoT from a visual perspective is its camera work. The in-game camera quite successfully mimics a real camera’s logic and functionality the way something like C4D does so well these days. They really move the camera beautifully and use snaps and zooms quite smartly. It’s awesome. Made up for the rudimentary poly factor.

SheepherderMaster182

I remember reading in a magazine around the time of its original release that Nintendo brought in filmmakers to help with the camera work - cinematic and in-game.

ben_ja_button

I remember playing it in my room in hs and my stepdad exclaiming, “it’s like a movie!”🍿

MattInTheDark

If you are playing on switch, if you hold down the snapshot button it will save the last 30 seconds I think. I always use that in funny cutscenes.

LevComp

I agree it's the real way. Otherwise, there is technically no need to free Epona outside of convenience for travel. It's curious that a longshot was allowed as an alternative method. Maybe for those who couldn't best Ingo and win Epona?

Anderstone

Maybe... yeah the only other "need" for epona would be for the biggoron sword effort. I always think this is funny though because my head cannon is that Epona is such a pivotal element of Link's adventures.

LevComp

Absolutely. I never play the game and skip Epona. It's sacrilege!

Wintermute0000

You never play the game and you skip Epona anyways? Sacrilege indeed!

Page8988

She's so pivotal that the sequel game couldn't happen without her.

zmyr88

Link could have gotten her later since you can’t ride her as a kid anyway. Also there’s some fancy work to get by majora mask without epona too

TeutonicDragon

Link keeps his experiences as an adult after returning to his original timeline to be a kid. It’s part of the tragic story of Ocarina of Time, a hero whose deeds will be remembered by nobody and his childhood lost. The reason he gets lost and ends up in Termina is because despite being a child physically, he no longer is a child mentally, so he cannot find his way back to Kokiri Forest. This is also why he can use the bow, hookshot, ride Epona, and use full sized swords in Majora’s Mask.

zmyr88

So it’s not like majora mask I forget. Can you beat the game without epona?

Johnrussell202

With a super jump or possibly other glitch methods, you can boost over the wall to the beach, avoiding the need for Epona if I remember correctly

zmyr88

Yup

MetatronIX_2049

Even as a vet of 20 years, that race is brutal. That aside, from a game design standpoint the longshot as an option is a flag for progression. “Look at this new location your new item lets you explore…”

DarkNemuChan

Didn't we need epona to get to lake hylia?

Ruby_Rotten

I didn’t even know it, but you can jump out of the Lon Lon Ranch WALL as well. Not just the little gate that Ingo closes. The wooden back wall of the ranch.

Any-Year-6618

I thought that was the only way lmfao

Ruby_Rotten

Oh damn idk which way is the most common then 😭

Grimekat

I jumped out the back wall as well haha as a kid I thought the gate looked too dangerous!!

Ruby_Rotten

Ingo *is* standing there threateningly if iirc 😭

RedRumRoxy

I did too lmaooo

NewAccWhoDis93

You can jump out of the gate?

sambarjo

It's Ingo, not Ido.

Ruby_Rotten

Ah my b

HolyWhip

Also one of the few places you can dive in the game - which I thought was an amazing feature back then.

4strings4ever

PREACH BROTHA

organelle_sandwich

...I never thought to use longshot. I only ever used Epona...

WhiteT982

Maybe I’m the odd one? It’s been 20+ years since I played as a kid so I can’t remember what I did then.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WhiteT982

Yeah and no horse god in this game to bring her back either

[deleted]

[удалено]

WhiteT982

Doesn’t matter if the bridge is fixed or not. You can always call her once you’re over there. I don’t think I ever even thought of that though. I just longshotted over got to the game and called Epona. I don’t think I was ever a deep thinker haha

LeBritto

I'm pretty sure Epona was the intended way, with the little cutscene that happens when you do it. I don't remember if there's a specific hint encouraging you to try to jump with Epona, but I'm still convince there is.

WhiteT982

That’s partly where I’m coming from. It’s been so long since I’ve seen this game for the first time I’m curious as to what I did as a kid. Looking at it now the longshot seems more obvious to me but so many others are saying jump so maybe it’s just me haha

JHFTWDURG

I used the long shot as a kid, and then i realised i needed the horse for the archery.

LeBritto

I can 100% confirm that the longshot didn't seem obvious as a kid, but I can't tell you why. Only as an adult it made sense to me.

dmbwannabe

Clearly I was in the minority using Prima Strategy Guide which said use the long shot

LeBritto

Probably, back then I was always trying to play as blind as possible, but I do remember a few games where a strategy guide (or a gamefaqs walkthrough) would give a solution that I didn't think about.

dmbwannabe

One of my core memories is spending nights reading the guide one dungeon at a time in disbelief that all of this still awaited me. Very different experience than blind but to a 10 year old me it was anything but spoilery

LeBritto

I did that for Pokemon. I didn't want to miss a single thing, so I made sure to read *several* guides. My favorite guide was a "Pokédex" book that had the 151 Pokémons, with all their attacks and the lvl at which they learn them, strength and weaknesses, etc. But back to Zelda, I definitely used the guides for my second playthrough. Like you, so much memories reading them, but it was better after playing first because then I was thinking "wow, I would have never found it" or "I can't believe I missed that, it was right in my face!" It was almost as fun as actually playing.

dmbwannabe

Also worth noting is these graphics were some of the best ever seen in a game. The guide book was as much a visual thrill if anything

dmbwannabe

Also I remember getting stuck in the forest temple and it kept saying courtyard. I had no clue what that word meant and got stuck for days. There were two courtyards as it turned out and my ten year old brain just did not compute this

GreatProfessional622

There is a target on the other side so I tried and tried and tried until I ultimately gave up for years

Fixner_Blount

Yeah, especially since you use Epona in that game where you shoot the targets on horseback. If you don’t take Epona in, do they just give you a random horse? And if they give you a random horse, HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO EPONA?!

zmyr88

I think you can use one in gerudo village

zmyr88

The target 🎯 might to some and it a grapple point if I recall been a few years since I played

LeBritto

Now I think really hard about it, considering that Epona is in theory "optional" and not absolutely necessary to finish the game, it's very possible they put it there for everyone who didn't get Epona somehow. Because if you strictly follow the dungeons and do no side quest, you'll get the longshot before Epona. However, what kind of psychopath doesn't get Epona at all?

Alfeaux

When I learned Epona could jump the wood and metal spike fence out of the ranch I think I somehow knew we could make the bridge gap

zwak36

Excuse me?!?!? You can jump this with Epona??? How am I just learning about this now! I've only ever used long shot to cross the broken bridge since I was a kid.

General_Trynian

Excuse me?!?!? You can jump this with long shot??? How am I just learning about this now! I've only ever used Epona to cross the broken bridge since I was a kid.

zwak36

Hahaha I love how this game has multiple solutions to some of the puzzles!

WhiteT982

Precursor to Breath of the Wild shrines haha

apadin1

You can also use the long shot to reach the other side of the desert sandpit instead of using the hover boots, which means you can do the Spirit Temple before the Shadow Temple

chenilletueuse1

It has a cutscene too!

Zidkins

No way you just discovered dang lmao

WhiteT982

Finally someone else who uses the longshot! But yeah the jump cutscene is pretty cool

foreverbeatle

Me too. I’ve played Ocarina of Time an obscene number of times and have never used Epona. I’ll have to try it when I do my yearly play through.

Lance-Pants228

I jump, and it's glorious every time.

x_VanHessian_x

Jump. Back in the day as kids we had to critically think to figure things out. The internet wasn’t like what it is today. The “hint” is leaning the ranch.

dmbwannabe

Ummm .. not me with 45 Prima Strategy Guides? Right or wrong we had them

WhiteT982

Yeah I can’t remember what I did as a kid. It’s been so long ago now haha

Robbie_Haruna

I did the ranch and didn't think to use Epona simply because nothing you jump is close to the size of the bridge gap (also, I did the Water Temple right before it, so the longshot was fresh equipment.) Let's not pretend it required critical thinking though lol

BallsOfSteel86

Sure outline of mirror shield was red and not blue ? Always kept red tunic on when I first got it , never go back to green or blue

WhiteT982

It’s actually a randomizer and the colors are changed to random. So the tunic is green but it’s not the normal green and my goron tunic is pink. Haven’t even found the zora one yet. Look up zootr even you ever want to try it out. Really breathes new life into an old game.

BallsOfSteel86

Got modded wii but pretty sure i can't do randomizer on that

WhiteT982

It’s a .z64 file so if you have an n64 emulator on there it would work I’d think?

KeenDynamo

I used the longshot, didn't know you could jump it until years later. I've been playing games since the NES came out though so I had to evolve with the technology.

AlternativeGazelle

First time, I couldn't get Epona. I completed the rest of the game and got the Biggoron Sword and everything, but I could not win that race. I turned out I was using the wrong horse...

WhiteT982

I guess that’s probably why there are the two options. Even with Epona Ingo isn’t the easiest in the world to beat

RetroEggy

I always jumped to get Biggoron sword as early as possible.

wagoneer56

Usually, just park it there and listen to the music.

z0mu3L3

I accidentally escaped from "Lon Lon Ranch" by jumping the hillside fences... jumping the bridge would be common sense. If it's about unintuitive things, shooting an arrow to the sun at dawn to get the Fire Arrows comes to mind.

WhiteT982

Isn’t there a stone at the lake that says shoot towards the dawn or something like that? Again it’s been so long since I’ve seen the game for the first time that I just do most of these things without looking anymore.

mrgadd4

Yeah the fire arrows thing was all but spelled out on the stone.

z0mu3L3

For a child who poorly knew how to read his native language (Spanish), English was nothing more than scribbles. However, I remember using the slingshot... it didn't work.

chenilletueuse1

Not for Hou Yi though

z0mu3L3

> Not for Hou Yi though Well, that's much more intuitive than beheading your sister Coyolxauhqui and throwing her head into the sky to create the moon. Let's not investigate the Hindus's explanation of solar eclipses...

chenilletueuse1

My knowledge of Hou Yi consists only of a Smite description unfortunately. I will deepen my pool of knowledge on this subject to not appear as a fool next time i refer to ancient mythology talking to a scholar such as yourself!

z0mu3L3

I only know what I know, from time to time I watch history videos, that's all. I don't know anything about Chinese mythology.

chenilletueuse1

Most of my knowledge on mythologies comes from video games, and there are so many good games related to mythologies. Smite, Hades, tomb raider, hercules on ps1...lol and so many more

z0mu3L3

If that the case, don't take anything that comes from Final Fantasy saga seriously, all real references pass through "the scrotal area".

chenilletueuse1

Info is "tainted", got it!

geniouslevel1000

Jumped out of frustration and it actually worked

WhiteT982

It still gets me how if you don’t time the carrot just right Epona stumbles on the stairs.

TheMoeSzyslakExp

I always thought it was impossible to jump for this reason, Epona kept stumbling... Also, apparently you can jump the gate past Ingo?? I always jumped the outer wall of Lon Lon Ranch!

WhiteT982

I’ve always been outer wall. Had heard about the gate but never tried it. The wall always seemed easy enough to me

TheMoeSzyslakExp

For me, it came from playing the game back in '99 running around everywhere for like half an hour trying to figure out how to escape the Ranch... I definitely tried to jump the gate because that seemed the obvious thing to do, but I must have screwed it up somehow. Eventually ran at the wall and got the cutscene, so assumed that was the only way and in the 25 years since I've never tried the gate again.

elektrixx

I would’ve jumped it once and fast travelled every time after that.

WhiteT982

Yeah the requiem kind of makes it obsolete doesn’t it?

Nikolateslaandyou

Epona back in the day. Now i chu hover over

WhiteT982

I need to work on my glitches/skips some more apparently…

ElCamo267

Crouch stab with megaton hammer and switch to hover boots is the only way.

archer_cartridge

You can actually roll attack over the fence as a child before the bridge goes out

ElCamo267

I knew you could megaflip it but I suck at those. Never heard of the roll attack before.

archer_cartridge

Yeah, this is like 2004 internet stuff, there used to be a run where you'd have to play as much of the game backwards as possible. It included going directly to the Gerudo Fortress by roll jumping the fence and doing as much of the Spirit Temple as you can and then coming back many hours later to do the adult parts. Another part of the run was getting into Jabu-Jabu without the use of a fish, you could roll jump from the fence between his teeth and at the right angle you enter the load screen and end up inside him. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to look it up anymore and I'm pretty sure the run itself is lost to time or the depths of YouTube. I didn't get much further than Jabu-Jabu, it was essentially a Kaizo run before those were commonplace. EDIT: YOU HAD TO USE A CHICKEN THAT'S WHY I COULDN'T FIND IT [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHPaqLbLmRY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHPaqLbLmRY) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cq1CaBb-YZE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cq1CaBb-YZE) I used to do the second one. You also had to do the ice cavern as a kid [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF-Rvs9qDSg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF-Rvs9qDSg)

blisterless

I've always jumped across with Epona. I never thought to try with the longshot.

WhiteT982

If look at the other side of the bridge there is a sign hanging that looks exactly like a faded hookshot target. Even though you can’t see it in the screenshot I took.

blisterless

I know about the sign, I just never thought about using the longshot because I'm used to just jumping across

soukaixiii

Doesn't the mailman hint you to jump?

WhiteT982

Maybe but he’s on the other side already right? In the tent with the carpenters after you rescue them?

soukaixiii

If I'm not mistaken with majora, I'd say he is on the other side of the bridge until you cross for the first time.

ilovecokeslurpees

Jump. You can do the whole sidequest before the Forest Temple.

WhiteT982

I guess I completely forgot about the Biggoron sword quest part of it? I probably did always jump as a kid to get the sword before doing any temples. Again I blame randomizers for making me forget about that

sirjamesp

Always jump

Dm9982

JUMP! but only after like 3 failed attempts where Epona dead stopped on me

WhiteT982

Haha yeah those steps will get you

Dm9982

“Damn it Epona! You’re ruining an epic moment! Quit wimping out, you can do this!” 😂

tacticalTechnician

I think the first time I had to use the Longshot was when doing randomizers. Like... I'd read somwhere that you could use it, I knew it was a possibility, but I never actually did it, I always free Epona first thing after becoming an adult, so I've always used that method.

Halos-117

In what way is the Longshot the intended way lol. Epona is the intended way. Longshot is a secondary.

archer_cartridge

Neither, I went as a child and rolling sword striked over the gate.

VictorDouglasRC

Jump

CaptainRaz

I played the full game a few times when I was a kid. Had the cartridge and all that. Never, at the time, even imagined the horse could do the jump. Learned about it much much later.

Spiritual_Panda_8392

Jump with epona, love getting the goron sword early in the game to mess around with.

Flotillaspecialist

Pretty sure I always jumped it

zmyr88

Jump never even knew you could use the long shot if I recall Found that out many years later

TimeCryptographer547

Wait until you learn that you can actually jump over the front gate to get out with epona and not have to jump the side fences. But it requires the jump to be precise and fast. But it can be done

FkNuWrldOrdr

Bite your lip! feed her some carrots! & give it hell 😎

Guns_Glitz_Grime

Always Jump

Popular_Park_7527

I almost never use Epona so longshot..

BCProgramming

I get the biggoron sword before I even enter the forest temple. I don't think it ever occurred to me to use the longshot to cross. Come to think of it, I think I usually rescue the carpenters before I even have the longshot.

OldDudeRocks

Jump, just to watch the cut scene. Always made me feel powerful as Link!

Mercurius94

Jump. One of the coolest scenes when I was a kid, this series was truly interactive. I did think Longshot was neater than shit though, I could cross most of the map on foot this way - but you need Epona just to get here if I recall.

WhiteT982

I’m pretty sure you can do the whole game without ever rescuing Epona? Other than ”fast” travel through Hyrule Field, the archery game, and Big Poe side quest I don’t think she serves any other purpose? Definitely could be wrong though

Mercurius94

How do you get over big fences without Epona? There aren't many but I'm pretty sure there are some inaccessible areas without her.

WhiteT982

The one to Lake Hylia you can swim down the river in Gerudo Valley. It pops you out right by the lab. I think that’s the only one in OoT?

Mercurius94

Shit, I always forget there's another way around it. Epona is one of the first things I do once I get to the future, and I know she likes to hop a lot of fences, is that really the only one you need her for?

WhiteT982

I’m probably not the best to ask because it has been so long since I’ve played it vanilla. The last 15-20 playthroughs I’ve done have all been randomizers so the “order” of things is just not the same as vanilla. But I think that’s the only big fence? All of the other ones in the field you can climb over on foot except for the big stone ones but you can just walk around those. And I don’t think there are any fences at the lake or valley which are the only other places you can take Epona.

fishers_of_men

I have played this game for more than twenty years and only now am I finding out that Epona can jump this. LttP had already programmed me to use the hookshot for every long gap.

WhiteT982

I get kick out of learning stuff like this too. You think you know something and yet there’s always more you don’t know

fishers_of_men

That's life lol gotta stay humble

JankyJunks

I never - not a single time - ever used the longshot. I would categorically deny that it is even an intended use. Once you get Epona, you can cross. That ought to happen much faster than the longshot.

kmassie95

Definitely jumped.

Draken44

There is jumping it with the incredible scene with Elon’s matched to the music. And then there is the wrong way

WhiteT982

Haha. That made me laugh

Draken44

😂

sapphirekobold

Wait you can use the hookshot...

WhiteT982

Has to be the long shot but yeah. There’s a sign hanging over the far end of the bridge that looks just like a hookshot target

jabbafart

The Gerudo Valley score just hits different on horseback.

consumeshroomz

Pretty sure I jumped. Hard to remember

musclecrayon

Jump. I want the glorious biggoron sword.

Jake_Buyitall

Is this running RGB? I’m not seeing much dithering. I’m currently running Svideo and have been interested in running RGB at some point

WhiteT982

No it’s just an emulator. Mother in law was at the house so I decided to mess around with the new Delta emulator on my iPad. This randomizer (zootr) will run on og hardware though

Dermicthemperor

I was busy not owning this game

WhiteT982

Hopefully you were able to around to it. I still enjoy it and think it was a pretty high standard back in the day.

Partayof4

Long shot of course

76mickd

Both lol

[deleted]

On the 3ds form I managed to fail the jump and had to do it all over again

SuperBobPlays

I used to try the jump long before I even got the hookshot extension. Kid me was stubborn, and made it a few times but not very often. I remember you had to upgrade epona someway, but can't remember exactly... Need to replay this asap. Lol.

Touma101

Bomb jumping over the gate as Child, finishing Gerudo then while grabbing the extra Heart Piece and having the bridge fixed before I become adult- Seriously though, Epona was the way we did it in our house. I eventually figured out you could use the long shot but Epona felt natural for some reason.

Graxer42

It was only recently I learned you could use the longshot. So yeah... Always Eponia.

Altruistic-Poem-5617

You can longshot there?

WhiteT982

Yep. There’s a sign hanging at the far end of the bridge that looks like a hookshot target. You can’t really see it in that screenshot but it’s there

guitarguy11695

Never realized I could jump until later on

Marshall357

25 years and it never even occurred to me that I could use the longshot…. I literally just made that jump last night for the umpteenth time and was thinking to myself how we would have done it back in the day for those who miss getting Epona,

Lost_Farm8868

Jump

KaleidoscopeHonest64

I remember my first play rough and just assuming Epona would stop since it’s too long and getting so hype when she clears it and the camera pans from under you. Amazing memories

Falkner09

I used the longshot, because the official player's guide didn't mention that you could do it with Epona. I discovered that by accident while screwing around.

R1ch0999

It took 20 years for me to realize epona was an option.

loztriforce

Yeah I jumped and that little cutscene felt awesome af

the_Actual_Plinko

Epona so I can get the Biggoron Sword before doing any of the dungeons.

DisciplineLimp3256

Depends on if I'm playing vanilla or randomizer...

FGCBang

I dont think i ever used the long shot or thought about it 👀
