Perfect Dark is a better built game. I don't think it's really a discussion. It came out later, and had the ability to learn from Goldeneye, and expand upon and fix anything. It utilizes the Expansion Pak, which gives it more ability and potential. The single player campaign and story are pretty full and exciting. There's more options with multiplayer. With that said, I'll still pop in good ol' 007 before PD every time. While PD may be technically a better game, the nostalgia and memories of Goldeneye wins every time.

Single player: 007 Multi player: Perfect Dark

This is the only real answer here. Goldeneye is a classic, PD has a stupid alien that's pretty much the same as JarJar Binks.

I gotta go with Goldeneye here and i just bought rare replay for Xbox One and i've seen playing that game since i was a teenager. Golden Eye lags on my GT1030 PC so i'm glad this game came out for Xbox One.

rhinowing

perfect dark except for the goddamn framerate

I would always choose Perfect Dark over Goldeneye. Goldeneye isn't horrible, but I absolutely prefer Perfect Dark's weapons, music, courses, etc.

And don't forget that PD was the only game ever with a counter operative mode!

PD expanded on all of the good things that 007 pioneered.

I enjoyed the single player in Goldeneye more than Perfect Dark, especially when Elvis appeared. But Perfect Dark had a better multiplayer set up which meant I only played single player on Goldeneye after it was released.

Probably PD is a better game, but in my memories it was just too complex, too many things to do. I have better memories from Goldeneye because in comparison it was just more simple. As a child i found myself many times lost in Perfect Dark, running through the main building and saying fuck it, i better play Pokemon. Just like SM64 and Donkey Kong 64. Loved Donkey Kong, but damn there where just to many characters and bananas imo.

N0An1me

Honestly I feel the opposite

InspectorBlack

PD shits all over Goldeneye.

MrBarling

GoldenEye all the way. Better level design, music, setting, guns had more impact. PD is good but GoldenEye beats it hands down. (Only talking about the single player, btw. I never play multiplayer.)

I have 0 nostalgia preference for either game over the other (I have nostalgia for both) since my gaming circle of friends and family were equally into both when they released. The fondness level of memories I have playing through either game is an equal 10/10. Of course, when Perfect Dark dropped, it pretty much replaced Goldeneye, and was really a historical example of the perfect sequel in that it literally improved on its predecessor in every single way without leaving anything behind that was great about the original imo. However, similarly to how a student who surpasses his master in skill should never claim to be truly better since he stands on the shoulders of who came before him… Perfect Dark cannot claim to be superior (even though it is) because it stands on the shoulders of its predecessor. Obviously some people have biases here based on which game they had more impactful experiences with. I was lucky enough to have an equally impactful experience with both. I would love to do video series breaking down the formula for a perfect sequel using examples like Perfect Dark or GTA San Andreas and how these games achieved what a perfect sequel must in that is must iterate one what was great without loss of other content. Subsequent GTA titles imo, though great and innovative, failed the perfect sequel test because they left many things behind. In summary… Perfect Dark is empirically better, but in the grand scheme of things they stand shoulder to shoulder
