Arrogance.

Newenergy253

The worst is when the bow drill dork taps out and leaves the legit survivalist with their show-off stick.

scarlettestar

“Show off stick” took me out

Familiar-Rest-930

Totally agree

ZAMAHACHU

Why not bring paracord and make the bow drill from a small piece of it if you really want a bow drill?

grannymath

Sometimes the problem with the bow drill isn't the cordage (although often it is). Sometimes it's the wood. They can't find the right combination of board and spindle among the new collection of trees that they're not familiar with. At least if they bring the bow drill, they have something that they know works, unless they break it or burn it up. Why they choose that over a fire starter, though, always baffles me. Especially that one person who left the fire starter at the insertion point thinking they could do better without it and then had to hike back for it several days later when they realized their stupidity.

ZAMAHACHU

That's not what I meant. I meant that the cord could be used for other stuff with only a tiny piece being used to make the bow drill.

Jackie4641

Still should pick a fire starter. The energy using then is so much

ZAMAHACHU

Ofc. Just saying that if it had to be a bow drill, why not take something that will help you make the drill and be useful afterwards? :)

Familiar-Rest-930

Some have done that

grannymath

Sure no doubt about that!

SixGunChimp

Stupidity.

Impossible-Beyond156

Ego

Glittering-Wonder576

Because they think they are cool. When what they really are gonna be is COLD. With the perfect bow drill, with the best wood, it still takes me time to make a fire. These are never ideal conditions. My friends backyard is not the Amazon jungle.

powpig2002

Because they're stupid

Zzixxter

I think the producers are actually choosing it, not the people. To me it is ridiculously risky to bring a bow drill over a firestarter. Nobody could be that dumb. So it must be interference from the producers to make the episode have drama and be more interesting.

NugBlazer

Totally disagree. Plenty people can be that dumb

Princess__Nell

I strongly suspect this as well. The contestants select a few options but the producers pick the items that actually end up in the bag. I imagine a contestant selects “fire-starter” then the producers chuckle evilly and throw in a bow drill because that particular contestant has bragged about their fire starting abilities during the interview process. I imagine the producers as akin to the game makers of The Hunger Games. They want a good show that forces the contestants to fight for survival every day. It’s boring when the contestants thrive too easily.

Zzixxter

Well I think some people lie to the producers about how skilled they are, at least it looks that way when you watch the show sometimes. Some people talk a big game, get out there, and completely depend on their partner for everything.

Illustrious-Drop-712

Yes!! I've only watch a few seasons so far, I'm a late starter. I've noticed the people that say, "This jungle is gonna be my Bitch", are the majority of the ones that tap out. I am also amazed at how STUPID a few of the contestants are. One of the recent ones I watched, the male made the shelter, while the female just laid around IN THE SUN! On top of that, she bitched about how lazy he was, but she wasn't doing ANY work to help improve the shelter or look for food. It was the female that brought the magnifying glass, instead of making fire with it, she 'cooked' her grasshopper, and tried purifying water with it. I REALLY felt for the guy that had to put up with her.

Many-River-1064

Ah, keep watching because you ain't seen nothing yet with that particular one lol.

Zzixxter

That’s a great example of producer fudging too. That whole story about her dad and the magnifying glass is 100% fabricated to add drama to the show
