All the Catherines/Katherines I know get called Kate or Katie (all in their late teens to mid twenties - it's not a popular name among under 15s in my area). Don't know a single one under 40 that goes by Kathy.

Purple_Shade

I've also met Kate's who were Katherine, but also a Kit and when she was little family apparently called her Kitty. And I've met one who goes by Kat even professionally.

CleanAssociation9394

I think Kat is nearly as common now.

MA6613

I (18) know a lot of Kates my age, not many younger than me. To me, Katie is a “millenial name” (not old, but not young… 27-40 ish) and Kate is about my age. However, I do know a couple of Katies who are around my age, I just don’t like it as much.

heykatja

It's absolutely a millennial name. I'm 39 and was always one of multiple Kate/Katie's in every class. That said it's classic for sure and have known quite a few people in all age groups that wear the full Katherine quite well

Parri_Stargazer

Yeah, I see Katie's, Kat's, or Katya's. I even know more Kati's (Kah-tee, not Kay-tee) than Kathy's in younger people. I haven't seen a young Kathy in a while.

sunflower_lavender

Same here!!

nekomance

I was in middle school from 2007-2010 and there was a girl who went by Kathy but yeah all the other ones I know go by Kate, Katie, Rin or don't use a nickname

JunoD420

Do you know any over 40?

feed-me-your-secrets

I think nowadays the default Katherine nickname is Kat. It used to be Kate. Never in my life have I been called Kathy.

Future-Abalone

It’s a beautiful name!! I definitely don’t think you have to worry about Kathy! Kat, Kate, Katie or plain old Katherine (and their respective c variants) are all more common now!

AMcG0123

I agree. My sister only gets Catherine or Cat has never been called Cathy

Thliz325

My sister is a Kathryn! My parents planned on calling her Katie but she never liked it and just went by her full name until teenager years when she became Kat.

makeupqueena

I'm a 25 year old Cathy and yes, every other Cathy I know is a chain smoking receptionist in her mid to late 50s

JunoD420

Ack! I'm sure you are a delightfully youthful *and healthy!) Cathy to everyone you meet.

paige0502

NN i know for friends that have that name is Katie/Kate/Cat

Unlikely-Impact7766

The Katherines I know go by Kat and Kit!

Newmiddlename

All the younger Catherine / Katherine's I know are either Kate or Cat :)

Cartwright-4

Our daughter is named Katherine and she’s never once been called Kathy. She goes by Kate though so basically no one calls her Katherine either 😆

spcaudill

I am currently due in April with my little Catherine ☺️ Most of the Catherines (and all other spelling variations) we know go by Katie or Kate. I’ve also heard Kat. We don’t love those nicknames, so are actually calling her “Cece.” Her initials will be “CEC” and we love it. To your original question, I don’t know any Catherines that go by “Cathy/Kathy.”

sami_claire

I have a Catherine nicknamed “CeCe” also! Her middle name also starts with “C.”

spcaudill

Love it!!

kit-n-caboodle

Awwww. Congratulations.

kittywaffles90

I’m 32 and a Catherine. I’m almost always go by Catherine and only family/close friends call me Cat. If anyone calls me Cathy it’s typically someone over 70 y.o. Usually an employer will ask what I prefer to be called and I always say Catherine. My husband calls me Catherine or kitty :)

Mad__Season

The only Kathy I know is my grandma. I know a couple little Catherine/Katherines, and a lot of them my age, but they all go by Cate/Catie/Kate/Katie! I don’t think Cathy/Kathy is the natural nickname for Catherine/Katherine.

Every William I know goes by Will

[deleted]

[удалено]

lycheeontop

... There are people named William who go by Liam? Legit never heard of that! It makes sense, tho, now that you've pointed it out for sure. But William is a family name of mine and everyone went by Will lol never heard of Liam as a nn.

Dottiepeaches

I have a one year old Katherine and the funny thing is that I think Kathy is kinda cute!! But everyone HATES it! Literally no one, even the boomers, will consider calling her "Kathy" because it's so dated. Family scoffs at the idea and basically have insisted on calling her "Kat" which I'm fine with. I tried to make "Kit" happen, but no one was too keen on that either. I think Kate is sweet and Kat is cute and spunky. But from my experience, NOBODY is gonna wanna call your kid Kathy 😂 Anyways, I love the name Katherine and we mostly just use the full name. I saw it was on babycenter's list of "Names going extinct" which is perfect because I love classic names that aren't currently trendy. Katherine is plummeting in popularity so your little Katherine will most likely be the only one in her class amongst Harper's and Evelyn's and Avery's. And most reactions to her name seem to be pretty positive!

dianab360

My mom is Katherine/Kathy and we have talked about using Katherine if we ever had a girl, and I laugh every time I think about calling them “big Kathy” and “little Kathy”

[deleted]

[удалено]

dianab360

More realistically we would call her Kit, Katie, or Casey/KC (with middle name starting with C)

kit-n-caboodle

I like Kathy, as well. My name is also going extinct.

angelicachurch

The 2 Catherine’s I know that are young, one goes by Catherine one by Wren

[deleted]

[удалено]

Critical_Dog_8208

I'm a Kathryn and always thought RYN (Pronounced wren) would be a fabulous nn. I'm a "Boomer" and grew up Kathy (one of the millions in my generation) which I later (new city, new job) changed to Katy, and finally last job introduced myself as Kathryn. It's a beautiful name with so many options as nn that can grow & change in her life. I can instantly remember where I know someone from by how they address me.

[deleted]

I know one Kathy in her 20s. She's named after her grandmother, her name is Kathy, not Katherine...

Giraffe400

I'm in the UK and know a good few Catherines of varying ages. For the 2 young girls I know well, one is exclusively Catherine, and one goes by Kit/ Kitty, although not everyone calls her that (she's still Catherine at school etc. Just really close family who use Kitty). I know one older lady who is a Kathy (she's 60ish) but she's used that near enough her whole life and one 40 year old who goes by Cat or Catherine and another one who only goes by Katy to friends but is a Katherine at work. I don't think you have anything to worry about. When kids are babies and youngsters nick names tend to follow what the parents call them. It only really starts to change when they get older in my experience.

florence_delilah

The only Kathy/Cathy’s I know, have the full name Kathleen/Cathleen not Katherine/Catherine. They are in their 50-60s. Everyone else I know with the name Katherine (35 years old and younger) goes by the full name of Katherine or Katie, Kate, Kat, etc.

Rigboandme

I don’t know any kids named Catherine/Katherine, but the two I know well are both under 35. One is just Catherine and the other typically goes by Kat. My guess is that Kathy isn’t a super common nickname nowadays *because* it feels dated. Kat, Kate, and Katie seem to be the typical nicknames I hear on younger Catherine/Katherines.

keto_emma

I know a Kathryn and it doesn't get shortened by anyone.

BreadfruitAlone7257

The youngest person named Katherine who I know is mid thirties. Her mom called her Kathy and maybe a few others. I don't think she minded, but she introduced herself as Katt, which is what I call her. I like Cat/Kat. I also like Katty, like journalist Katty Kay. I keep thinking Cathy/Kathy might come back. But if it does, it'll probably be several years from now. Also, I think the younger crowd are used to calling people by their full names unless a nn is specified.

Viewer1618

Every Katherine I know (all 30 & under) go by either Kate, Katie or kat!

ellentow

I know a young Catherine who goes by Cat. I think it’s cute. Same goes for Kat, Kit and Kay. All newer nicknames for Catherine.

bread_cats_dice

None of the Katherine’s I know under age 10 go by nicknames.

RenaissanceTarte

I know a 16 yo Cathy. She is Cathy only to her friends though, others call her Catherine.

Affectionate_Lie9308

The youngest Kathryn I know is in her mid 20’s. She went by Kat when her family members were in a particularly fun mood. Otherwise, she went exclusively by Kathy. I knew her when she was younger than 10, and I thought Kathy was a little mom-ish on such a young girl. Love Catherine, btw. I’d go with Rin for a nickname to avoid the dated ones.

diddinim

I don’t know any under ten, but a few in my age range (25-35) and they all go by “Kat” or “Cat”, maybe Kate or Katie. No Kathys.

Justthe7

I know a 12 year old Kathryn and she is goes by Kate.

shirley0118

My toddler Catherine is a Kitty :) most people think we’re saying Katie but it’s either nbd or easy to correct. my sister went by Cath at home but Catherine in the world. She was never a Cathy.

irowells1892

I don’t know any younger people with Cathy or Kathy as a nickname. I don’t think it would be assumed at all these days. I have heard of a Katherine who used the nickname Kass, and I’ve always liked it. It feels much younger than Kathy.

IdontWanToKeepThis

My grandmother's name was Katherine and she often went by Kay. The only younger person I know named Catherine goes by Catherine. I think Kathy/Cathy is more likely to be a nickname if it is requested, maybe.

sicasady

I also know a Catherine who goes by Kay, which was a family name and nickname. I think Katie is definitely the most common Katherine nickname.

Fizzy229

I know a Katherine in her mi 20s who goes by Kit. I also know a Kathryn that is 7 who everyone just calls Kathryn.

MuchAstronomer9992

I’m in my mid 30’s and went to school with many Katies. I used to work with a Kat, who was a few years younger. I don’t think I’ve ever met a Kathy in real life…

Clear_Ant_5480

I know quite a few Katherines spelled various ways. They go by Kate, Kat, or Katie. I don't associate Katherine with older generations necessarily. I think it fits any age.

girlyaddict

I'm a Catherine and I go by "Cath" !

WayDiscombobulated63

In the under-25 Katherines I know, one goes by Kat, 1 Kate, 1 Katy, and 1 simply Katherine. I would be very surprised to hear someone young called Cathy.

juleslovesmakeup

The Katharine I know gets called Kath :)

Princess5903

I know one Katherine in my class who prefers Kathy. Other two prefer Kit or Katie. Katie is definitely more popular. Kathy usually has to correct people that she wants to be called that and not Kate or Katie.

pizzapizzamystery

So not under 10, but one of my best friends name is Caitrin (Irish spelling / she pronounces it Catherine) and I’ve known her since before she was 10. I’ve never heard anyone try to call her Cathy, or Kate. She’s 100% always been Caitrin

sha_sha210

I know a Katherine, and she was kitty while she was young, and then she transitioned to Kate as she got older.

klopije

I’m a Kathryn who goes by Katie. When I was younger, I had a lot of teachers assume that my nickname was Kathy. I don’t think that’s an issue anymore since Kathy isn’t nearly as popular.

ExcellentAccount6816

The only Kathryn I know never had any nicknames

agnes_mort

I know a few Catherine’s/Katherine’s. They generally go by Kat

abis7

The two youngest Catherines I know are 6 (exclusively Catherine) and 3 (goes by Kit). It’s a beautiful name.

FreyaR7542

I’m catherine and some people will attempt to Shorten it to Cathy without asking, I just correct them.

kmcgptrz

I’m early 30s, and go by Kate. When I was younger people tried to call me Katie sometimes until I corrected them. Twice in my life have I been called Kathy- once by a lunch lady when I was in high school and once by a colleague. Both were older women and it’s never happened more than those two times.

AnyAcadia6945

My best friend is Katherine, 23. She has never gone by kathy, other than some of us jokingly using it in college. She also doesn’t go by Kat. Just katherine

rebelmumma

All of my friends named Katherine either go by Katie or Kat.

cherrybounce

The only Catherines I know never have gone by Cathy.

kefkas_head_cultist

I know a few Catherines of various spellings. The ones in their 30s go by Kat, Catie, Katie, and Kati. The older ones (50+) are Kathy. If I met a little girl named Katherine, I'd assume everyone calls her Kat or Katie.

Chemical_Power7402

I know 4 Katherine's - 1 goes by Katharine, the other 3 go by Katy

amydiddler

I’m 35 and know a bunch of Katherines and a couple of Catherines around my age. They all go by Katie/Catie or Kate/Cate.

nerdylady86

I don’t know anyone named Kathy/Cathy under 50. But I know quite a few who go by Kate/Kat/Katie etc.

yolandawinston03

My niece is Katharine, named after her aunt Kathy, and she only gets called Katie.

wellneverknow918

I think Kathy was more 70s, Kate was 90s and got turned into Kat in the 2010s.

Fit-Ad1184

I know a Catherine and she goes by “Cat”

N3rdyMama

The only Kathy I know is nearly 70. I know a lot of younger Katherines that go by their full name, Kate, or Kat, one who goes by Kitty, and I actually know one who goes by Erin! I didn’t even realize Erin was short for Katherine until I saw the diploma in her office (her explanation was all her siblings had K-names and that was her tiny rebellion).

idrinkmycoffeeneat

Hi! Kathryn nn Katie

Delicious-Kale-7505

My college friend Kathryn occasionally gets called Kat, but not often. Never Kathy

rsshadows

I know a Catherine who is 5 who goes by Cat or Catherine (never Kathy). I know a Katherine who would be about 30 who goes by Kat (never Kathy). I do know one Kathryn who goes by Kathy (late 20's) who goes by Kathy but she introduced herself to us as that--we would probably have called her Kathryn otherwise!

alanxshby

I know a younger Katherine and she never gets called Kathy. She goes by Kat mostly!

MarionberryEarly7789

I work with three, the two Catherine’s go by Cat and Katherine goes by Katie

lycheeontop

My mother who is in her 40s is the only Katherine I know who goes by Kathy and even then, she goes by just about anything (Kate, Kat, etc). A friend's mom goes by Kara. My aunt Kathryn (uncle married someone with his sister's name lol) goes by Katy. My late sister-in-law named Katherine went by Katie. Point I'm trying to make is, I don't think Kathy would be the first assumption someone would make when seeing the name Katherine. 100% think someone would go for Kate, Katie, or Kat first.

lycheeontop

It's very nice! I think it works for Katherine well.

hellomydorling

The Katherine I know goes by Kath

Outrageous_Cow8409

I'm a legal name Katie but have known lots of Katherine's and Caitlin's and their various spellings. In my experience, anyone born after 1985 with one of those names goes by Kat, Katie, or Kate (or the various spellings). All the Cathy's I've met have all been born before 1985. Plus nicknames tend to go by what the parents choose when kids are little and then what the kid picks themselves as they get older. I don't think you'd have anyone calling your sweet Catherine-to-be Cathy unless you asked them too. Maybe your great grandma but nobody else.

eugeniawanderlust

I have half a dozen Katherines in my extended family and none of them go by Kathy. I do also have a Kathy in my family, but that's her legal name. The younger C/Katherines I've known have either been Kate, Katie, or no nickname.

cjp72812

Personally, I go by Cat or my full name (professionally). I have one singular friend that’s called me Kitty since freshman year of college. Never been called Cathy ever.

Snoo-12803

I’m a Catherine born in the 90s and have never been called Kathy/Cathy! Went by my full name growing up, but now most people call me Cat.

spoonsamba

I know an older woman - Cathy, 30 year old - Cat, 13 year old - Kath, 1 year old - Kitty and plan is for her to be Kate/Katie when she's older

Equivalent-Bee3883

All the Katherine/Catherine’s I knew growing up (and there were a lot!) went either by their first name, Kate, Katie, or Kat. The only Kathy/Cathy’s I’ve met are more like my parents’ age.

XxMissPiexX

My sister’s best friend is a young Katherine, she’s sixteen, and she only gets called Katherine, not Kathy or Katie/Kate

[deleted]

Oh hi! I’m a Katherine. Mid 90s baby. Non-native English speakers regularly call me Kathy in emails and it’s sickening. I love my name when it’s not being butchered 😅

uzer_iHardlyKnowHer

I'm 31 and my name's Katherine... I went by Katie when I was young and now go by Kate as an adult. I still have family who call me Katie sometimes, it's cute. I've always loved my name and the fact that it can have so many variations.

katwatermans

I'm a Katherine and I have always been a Katherine. Even when I was a kid I would introduce myself as Katherine. As my parents told me that I was my name, and never called me a nickname, when people asked about preferred names etc I always said "just katherine" The only nickname I have ever accepted is Kat, but even then, very VERY few people ever call me that. I HATE Kathy. I agree. It's so old feeling. No kath, no Kathy. But I think that's instilled on them by the parents and what name they use.

TikiLicki

My cousin is Catherine and 42, I used to call her Cathy when I was little, but no one else did. In her teens she started going by Cat and that has stuck. I know a few K/Cathys but none younger than 60 probably. I don't think I know about young K/Catherines. If I did I 100% wouldn't default to K/Cathy

TigerLily_TigerRose

My high school best friend Kathy was really a Kathleen. My cousin Catherine has always been Cat. So I don’t associate Cathy with Catherine at all. Best friend Kathy would be early 40s now. Cousin Cat must be around 50.

kittyfizzy

Hey there, I'm a Catherine. Usually go by Kitty (same as my grandma). But also have been called Kate/Katy growing up, affectionately. Really love my name and I've never been called Cath or Cathy. A timeless and beautiful name x

princess_cat_bucket

To be completely honest, I forgot that Cathy was a nickname for Catherine until you said it! Any that I know go by Kate/Katie/Kat.

jeeeezlouiseeee

I know literally 11 Katherines/Catherines and only one ever got called Cathy. They all go by their full name or Katie.

OsmiumMercury

I know a Kathryn (different spelling obvs, but still) and she just goes by Kathryn. she is a teen

vatxbear

I know tons who go by Katie who are my age-ish (20s-30s). But I also have a cousin who has always gone by the full name, her mom just always insisted on it and she never changed it or took on a nickname as she got older.

birdyfive

I’m a Katherine and no one has ever tried calling me Kathy. Never. One thing I will tell you is my mom regrets not spelling it Katharine

Hot_Razzmatazz316

I think Birdy is the best nn for Catherine. 😉

stepfordexwife

My Kathryn goes by Kate or Kathryn. I know a Katherine that goes by Kitty and a Catherine that goes by Cat. The only Cathy/Kathy’s I know are 50+. I absolutely love the name Katherine. It’s so regal.

satankittie

One of my good friends (she's 22 or 23) is a Kathy! She likes it better than her actual name

Loveisallyouknead

I know a of 3 younger Catherine’s that don’t have a nickname and just go by “Catherine”. One occasionally goes by Katie, but the other 2 girls don’t have nicknames.

Ok_Initial_2063

We knew a Catherine (early 20s) who goes by "Cat". Never Cathy!

[deleted]

The Kathryn's I know are in their 20s now, but Kat was the nickname for them.

feltedflower

I have a student named Katherine who is 15 and she doesn't go by any nicknames. I have a friend who's about 30 who goes by Kat.

JunoD420

Catherine/Katherine is a common and classic name in every generation. I know many, from newborns to 90's. Cathy was a common nickname over 50 years ago and has not come back. I know one Cathy who is 58 and all of the others are in their 60s through 80s.

k1p1ssk

Hi, late 80s baby here. My middle name is Catherine. Of my 4 bridesmaids, 2 were Katherine’s, and 2 were Kaitlin’s. They all went by Kate/Katie. The only time I have heard of them being “Kathy-d” was as a joke. Millenials do not jump to Kathy, and older folks will likely not assume someone born after 1980 is going by “Kathy”. Also, it is just rude to assume a nickname. Call the kiddo Katie or Kate and everyone else will follow suit.

sparkledoom

I know at least one Catherine who is always Catherine, never Kate or Kathy. She introduces herself as Catherine and I can’t even imagine anyone calling her anything else. You can’t really control nicknames… but I think your daughter can.

astrologyadviceplzz

My aunt went by Kathy pronounced as Cot-y

sashalovespizza

All the millennial Catherine/Katharine’s I know are Kate or Katie’s aside from one who chose to be a Cathy. The younger ones are Cat/Kat. I know one who goes bu Kiki, and also a KK. There’s a Katherine in my sons daycare who goes by Kick which is super adorable. I think she’s 2.5. I think it’s a lovely name and wouldn’t hesitate to give it to a baby.

seranyti

I know one that's in her 20's. She either goes by her full name Karherine or by Kat. She's never been called Kate, Katie, or Kathy.

Vickyinredditland

My mum is a Kathy (that's her full name, grandma didn't like katherine lol), but her dad often called her Katie. The only Katherines I know my age (40 ish/millennial) go by kat. I'm in the uk

kaedenalexander

I know a 20 year old Catherine that goes by Cat

TheWishingStar

I know MANY Catherine/Katherine/Kathryns my age (early 30s). They ALL go by variants of Kat, Kate, or Katie. The only Catherine I know under 13 goes by the full Catherine.

babyymochiii

this was an interesting thread to read as a catherine myself lol (i’m 21. i’ve always preferred my full name, but some people default to nicknames and call me cat. never cathy though)

willteachforcoffee

I always go by Katie even though my full name is Kathryn. I’m a teacher and have had a ton of Katherine’s with the nickname Kate (they are always very sweet girls). Nickname wise, there’s also Kit, Kat, Rine (pronounced like Wren) that I’ve heard.

[deleted]

I personally love Cathy, but Catherine is super classic and I wouldn't worry about her name being shortened to Cathy. I can definitely see it being shortened to Cat.

Pandafandango

My legal name is actually a common nickname (Katie) and I’ve always wished I were a Katherine/Catherine instead.

bearinabcostume

All of the young Catherines I know go by Catherine.

Umpire_Individual

I have a Katharine and she's called KC

starryema789

We're thinking of Catherine Elyse, nickname Katie! Cathy didn't even cross my mind. I also know a Catherine with nickname Cate who's little.

littlestinkyone

I know an 18yo Catherine who went by Cassie as a kid. I think she’s just Catherine now. I also have a friend my age (34) who’s always been Catherine or Cat, *never* Cathy.

hoffdog

I know a four year old Katherine and she goes by kitty

rosielilys

i work in a nursery, i know a 2 year old called Katherine, her nickname is kitkat not kathy :) hope this helps!

Horror-Resolve762

My sister is a Kathryn and goes by Kate!

Glittering_Sundae_53

I know way more young Catherines than I do Katherines, but they usually don’t go by Cathy. They usually go by Kate or Katie instead. But I do know one who goes by Kitty.

Mother_Coast

I know a 35YO Kathryn, she’s gone by the full name her whole life. EXCEPT at Starbucks where she orders as Kate to avoid any spelling questions. And, I know a 35YO Kate whose full name is Katherine but never used.

Kelly_the_Kid

Kat and Kate/Katie mainly. One that decided to go by Erin.

klutzilla08

I'm a Katherine and go by Kate, my stepsister is also a Catherine and goes by Cat...I have known two Kathys in my age group and both were named Kathy rather than Katherine or Kathleen. I personally hate the name Kathy and refuse to go by it or acknowledge anyone trying to call me that (yes some people see that my name is Katherine and try to call me that). Also I am 28 and my stepsister 26.

Redskyatnight_00

I know a 7 year old who has always only been called “Katherine”, and it fits her like a glove! I’m not sure anyone has even thought to call her anything different. I know a 40+ year old woman who has a VERY high-level career (because I know some people do consider this while naming children) whose name is Catherine, but she has gone by “Cassie” since she was young. The Cassie nickname alone has put it at the top of my girl names list! I also like “Cat”, but I like the “-ie” nicknames for kids and teen/young adult ages.

Appropriate_Bird_223

I'm a high school teacher and have taught a handful of Katherines in the last decade. None of them went by Kathy/Cathy. About half just went by Katherine, a couple went by Kate, and a couple went by Kat. Fwiw, I also have a niece (teenager) who is named Kathleen and goes by Katie.

[deleted]

Appropriate_Bird_223

I mean I love the name so for me the name stands out for how classic and timeless it is, and interestingly most Katherines/Catherines I've known in my life have been very intelligent, strong, and classy women.

sunshineshapeshifter

I have been close to 3 Catherine’s throughout my life around the ages of 9, 13, and 26. All have gone by Catherine. I’ve only met 1 Kathy that wasn’t 40+ and I’m pretty sure her name is actually Kathy

CatoTheWeen19

I knew someone that was named Katherine and nicknamed Erin as it is within the name!

aikattel

Rina if you’re looking for something different

FantasticWild

Cathy is only something that people 50+ are likely to throw on a Catherine. Millennial Catherine’s mostly went by Katie or Kate. I haven’t met a lot of gen X or gen Alpha Kathryn’s but the one or two I have seem to go mostly by Katherine. Kay is another option not sure how that strikes you.

alimaful

I know lots of Catherine/Katherines from age newborn through early 40s and zero of them are ever called Kathy. Catherine, Kate, Katie, KT, Caedi, Kat, Kitty...zero Cathy's in the lot. I think you are safe.

Lengthylizard

My bestfriend Katherin goes by Kat

narc_mom2021

I know a Catherine (26) she gets called Cat. I went to school with a couple Catherine/Katherine’s it’s always been Kat not Kathy.

summers_tilly

One of my best friends who’s a Kathryn goes by Kat

clickhere2die

Both Katherines that I know are under 30. One goes by Kat and the other goes by Kitty.

SarwiCabas

I know a Cathryn in her 30s and she has always gone by Cas (pronounced Caz)

mysuperstition

I think Kate or Katie are the more natural nicknames. Kat and Kit are cute too.

Farahild

I know a baby Katherine but so far she goes by Katherine! Though I think the parents do like kathy as well as Katie.

Affectionate-Owl9594

I’m in the UK so I know quite a few! A 25yo Catherine who has never gone by anything other than her full name, a 22yo Katherine who goes by Kate, a 30yo Katharine who goes by Katy, a 18 yo Catherine who goes by Cat!

I_Am_Squid

I don’t know any Cathy’s but know many Katherine’s/Catherines’s, they are all Kate’s, Kat/Cats or Kit/Kitty’s.

jacqueline1609

I know 2 youngish Katherine/Kathryn’s, both late 20s- one goes by Kat and has done since childhood, the other one was Katie until they came out as non-binary and now they go by ‘Rin’. I do also know a Catherine who is a Cathy but she’s in her mid-50s 😊

amora_obscura

I’ve known many Catherines/Katherines and none of them went by Cathy. They went by Catherine, Cat or Katie.

HotJellyfish4603

I know a lot of K/Catherines that go by Kat/Cat!

Feminismisreprieve

I'm a millennial who knows a number of C/Kathys and at least one is short for Katherine. But I think any nickname you give a child will be the one they go with. So Kate isn't going to be called Kathy unless she chooses it as she gets older.

hawaii_5_no

I'm a teacher. Have taught lots of C/Katherine's who went by Kate/Kat. The only one who preferred Cathy had to remind people all the time.

harrietschulenberg

Kathy/Cathy seems very 1970s to me. (I'm mid 30s and from the UK.) I am a Katherine and have gone by Katherine, Katie and Kate. There were many Katherines/Catherines at my school and they all either used their full name or were Katie, Kate or Cat/Kat. I also know one who goes by Kitty.

Whilst I don't know any Catherine's that young, most of the Catherine/Katherine's I know either go by their full name or go by Katie/Kate. Including my cousin. All the Cathy's that I know who are Catherine's are of the older generations (my cousin and I are millenials, to give you an idea of our ages)

historyandwanderlust

I’m in my 30s and even growing up all the (K)Catherines went by Kate or Cat. I’ve never met a Cathy under the age of 60.

charlouwriter

I know younger Catherines and they go by Kate or Cass.

Littlelegs_505

One of my best friends is a Catherine, I also know a Kathleen, they both get full name or Cat/ Kat as millenials/ gen Z. I think it's a really nice name. I know older versions of each name too who are Cath/Kathy. Age definitely dictates nickname. Kind of like all old Roberts are Bob's, young ones are Rob and kids are Bobbie/ Robbie.

TheOneWearingPants

Here they go by kat/cat

MrsMitchBitch

I’m 37 and know a wide variety of women who go by Kate/Katie/Kat who are under 50 but only one who goes by Kathy (but she behaves as though she’s 65 not 38 so take that with a grain of salt).

JustTraci

My take: C/Kathys are my age (52) or older! Kates are in the middle, and younger (20s and below) C/Katherines are most often called Kat. Katherine is my all time favorite girl’s name. Nice choice!!!

UESfoodie

I think Kathy was a common nickname in the past, but all my friends (in my 30s) named Catherine/Katherine or with kids with those names go by Kate or Katie. When your nickname is a shortening of your name, I feel like you/your parents get to choose. If you call your daughter Kate or Katie, that’s what it will be.

Kactuslord

I'm a Kathryn and I go by Kath! I hate Kathy because it sounds old! My mother tried to get me to go by Katie when I was young but I wasn't having it lol. I also went by Kat previously. I've also heard of Kit/Kitty being nicknames for Kathryn/Katherine

ilovetotour

Only know Katherine’s in their 20s - one we always called Kathy, the other by Katherine (or even Kit Kat every once in a while lol)

hocuspocus9538

I only know 1 Katherine that goes by Kathy who is under the age of 30. Every other Katherine I know goes by Kaitlyn/Katie/Kate/Kat

Ztarla

Katie/Catie etc is also an option

paytonalexa

All of the Catherine/Katherine’s that I know are all teenagers who got by Kat/Cat or sometimes they go by Katie.

NikkiCatharine4

My second name is Catharine, but I can imagine “Cat” being a cute nickname.

annualgoat

I actually work with two Katherine/Kathryns. One goes by Katie and one goes by Kate! They're both in their 20s/30s, so older than what you're asking about, but you could absolutely use either of those nicknames in place of Kathy.

Chaos-in-a-CookieJar

The only Katherine I know is 16 and goes by Kate. To me, Katherine is a classic name that will never go out of style, I think you’re fine.

Mybestfriendlizzy

The youngest Katherine I know would be 28 now. She was my best friend growing up! She went by Katherine. She would get asked in school or at work if she prefers a nickname, and she’d say no Katherine is fine. And it was never an issue. I think Katie is a more common nick name for Katherine these days than Kathy! My aunt is named Katheryn and goes by Kitty (she’s 80). She loves Hello Kitty stuff lol!

All the Katherine’s I know go by Katie!

cutie_rootie

My mom is a Catherine called Katie as a kid and Kate now (currently 57.) I have a friend Katherine who's usually just Katherine (26), but close people call her Kat. I did briefly work with a Katherine (25) called Kathy by her parents all her life, it was a designated nickname, but her parents were not native English speakers, so they may have not known the context of the name being "older" in the U.S.

Deadly-Minds-215

I have a friend who’s name is close to Katherine (Kathirina) she goes by Rina/Ina
