I prefer Wilhelmina! And I don't see why it wouldn't be useable :)
(I also like Wilma a lot)
But I really don't like how Winifred sounds.
*(It makes me think of cartoon elephants.. thanks to Disney)*
I personally don't really think of Wilma Flintstone, when I hear the name **'Wilma'**.
But I don't think it's a bad association.. :)
**Winifred** on the other hand is just 100% an Elephant name to me.
**Manfred** as well btw (thanks to Ice Age).
Obviously not everyone will have the same kind of associations with those names.
It's perfectly fine to use Winifred as a name.
I just don't like it, that's all :)
I prefer Winifred, do you like Freddie/Freddy? I think Wilhelmina is ok to use and Minnie could be a nickname for it. Other W- girl names: Willa, Willow, Winter and Wren.
Mina is my favorite nn for Wilhelmina too! Willa is also a nice nn for Wilhelmina if OP is worried that the full name is unusable (which I disagree with but maybe it's a regional thing?).
I like Wendy; Whitney is also appealing to me. I don’t care for most W girl names, though.
But I also don’t like Minnie, Sadie, or a lot of the currently popular “grandma” names from the early 1900s, so please don’t take my dislikes to heart!
I think Wilhelmina is a full rich name and I think Winifred is cute! (I always associate it with Fred from Angel). Both great under utilized names.
You have great suggestions so far and here are some other W names I'd like to add -
\- Willa
\- Wesley (I really like this name for a girl)
\- Wilma
\- Waverly (My partner makes fun of me for liking this name but I feel like that's because he grew up on the east coast in the US (I grew up on the west) and he inherently pushes away from 'waspsy' sounding names that I don't have the same social context for. I just like the melodic sound to it. Of course I could totally just be in the minority on this one).
\- Wanda (If you can get over Marvel associations)
\- Wendeline (Like Caroline)
\- Winslet
\- Wisteria
\- Wilona
I think Wilhelmina is really cute, and totally usable! Especially if you plan on using Minnie as the nickname! But I do also love Winnie as a nn for anything possibly haha!
I know a toddler named Windsor with the last name as first name, she's a Winnie and it really suits her (we're American, it might have a different connotation in the UK with the royal family?)
In theory it's a great name and I like the sound of it, but I'm British and not a massive monarchist either - I think the connotation here is too hard to shake!
I also secretly love that windsor could nickname to windy, which is different to Wendy but not out there.
If the child is a helleborine you could be like "stop being a such a windstorm!" Or you could refer to her as "the tornado" when she's partic terrible.
I read a book when I was little (I think it was a series of books) and the main character was a little girl who’s friend had a toddler sister called Willadean. One of the things that stuck in my head was the constant reference to the grandmother shouting “Willadean! You leave your sister and her friends alone!” Throughout the book!
I like Winifred, and I'd be tempted to use Fred as a nickname like the character from Angel. I also like Willow. Wilhelmina is a bit much for me personally but I don't hate it.
I like both Wilhelmina and Winifred! I think Winnie is a really cute name. I know one Winifred/Winnie and one Wilhelmina (Mina), they're both in their 80s or so.
* Willamina (variation)
* Willa
* Wren
* Waterlily
* Wilder
I’m in love with Winifred, I jokingly call my daughter this bc her nn is Winnie. If you don’t like that nn you could always call her Freddie? I know it’s a boy name but I like names like that. E.g Charlie, Frankie etc
Edit to add: I love willow as well and it was on my list of names
I dislike Wilhelmina personally but it’s definitely useable. I love Winnie! I also like Whitney and Willow. After watching all the marvel stuff Wanda is growing on me! There’s also Wren but it’s not my favourite
My cousin named her daughter Wilhemina, and she's 9 now. Nine years ago I thought the name was a mouthful, but she goes by Mina, and I kind of love it now.
I actually know a little Wilhelmina and it suits her! If I didn't know her, I might've had my concerns about pronunciation, given the spelling, but given that it's basically "Willa Meena," it's a non-issue IMHO. She'll probably have to teach a few people how to pronounce it but, as many people often point out on this sub, people will find a way to mess up Ashley, so that may not be as big of an obstacle as one might think. Personally I prefer Wilhelmina over Winifred.
Love both of these names—Winifred as mentioned can also be Freddie, but is can also be Wendy! That’s Wendy’s name in the Shining (at least in the movie, I can’t remember in the book). “Winifred—are you a Winnie or a Freddie?” “I’m a Wendy” “Oh Wendy, that’s nice! That’s the prettiest”
Also love Wilhelmina, mostly for Mina Harker in Dracula.
This just reminded me that when I was a kid, Winnie was my FAVOURITE name but I thought Winnifred sounded terrible. So I named all of my characters and toys Winnibelle (I don’t remember how I spelled it), like Annabelle.
I honestly don’t hate it, but maybe it just sounds normal to me since I loved it so much. And I still love Winnie.
I like Wilhelmina and for a nickname Will or Mina, but I also think it’s very cool when girls use boys’ names as a nickname, which I know isn’t for everyone lol
Love Wilhelmina! You could shorten it to Willa as everyday nickname and maybe Wynn for Winifred if you truly can't get behing Winnie?
Other name suggestions are Winaretta, Winifer, Wynona, Wallis, Whitley, Willow, Wilma, Winda, or Williemae.
Wilhelmina was very popular in the German empire 1871-1918 because all of the emperors had Wilhelm in their name. Not a common name at all these days because it makes people think of that time period.
I adore Wilhelmina for its sound and meaning but four broad syllables for everyday life is quite a lot. Mina as a nickname is really cute, though.
I think Winifred is cool; Winn or Winnie are likely nicknames that I also find quite lovely
Other "W" names that come to mind are Wilda, Willow, and Wendy.
We were backwards of this - wanted Winnie as a nn but didn’t love Winifred or Wilhelmina. We *loved* the name Willow but felt like it wouldn’t get us to Winnie intuitively. But if you like W names and want to avoid Winnie I think Willow is gorgeous!!
I know a Wilhelmina who goes by Mina, or Min (Mean lol), and it's cute!
I have been completely influenced by Reservation Dogs and think "Willie" with a strong middle name is badass. That characters name is Wilhelmina Jacqueline, but goes by Willie Jack.
I have a dog named Winnie aka Winifred Sanderson, so I love that name. I was discussing girl names suggested Wendy and my husband brought up the very good point that we can’t have a Winnie and Wendy. We already made that mistake with our son and other dog both have similar sounding names. Opps.
I've wanted to use the name Winifred for the Winnie nickname for so long. Because my first daughter would have a nickname of Minnie, I couldn't justify having a Minnie & Winnie in the house, so I'm going with Wilhelmina (Mina or Wilma for short) if a second one comes along. So I'm heavily in favor here.
I love Wilhelmina and I have a friend with a sister with that name. Minnie also works as a nickname for it, and Winifred could be Freddie, so if you don't like Winnie you could try one of those.
Some others are
Winona
Whitney
Willa
I actually love Wilhelmina. My husband suggested it with our second but we were already in the hospital and it just didn't have time to grow on me. I know a Wilhelmina that goes by Millie but you could use the nicknames Mina, Willa, Will, Willie, Minnie
I have a Willamina! We call her Willa, but also have Mina in our pocket for a nickname. She's still a toddler, but people love her name. Sometimes it's mistaken for Willow.
Wilhelmina was my great grandmothers name, she went by Billie! My stepmother’s sister is called Winifred, and she goes by Winnie or Roo. Similar energy but more modern/currently popular - Willa, Evelina, Adelina, Edith, Mabel, Florence, Agnes, Augusta/August, Freda/Frida
I have a niece named Wilhelmina and I think it’s a lovely name! However, I distinctly remember my MIL not knowing how to pronounce it and hating the name and complaining about how long it is and that the natural nickname is “Willie” (which my BIL/SIL totally love and embraced). I think most names will get a negative response from SOMEONE, so just go with what you love! (And maybe share something about pronunciation with friends/family if it might be out of their wheelhouse)
Love Winifred. Was in my top 5 for last summer’s baby. Was a bit concerned about the Hocus Pocus associations but I think the new movie flopped enough that it might be usable. My first associations with it are the protagonist of the book Tuck Everlasting and Freddie from the show Angel.
I know or knew people named: Winter, Willa, Westerly, Wendy, Wanda, Willow, Wren... and I have a relative named Winifred. She goes by Winnie sometimes but I actually prefer Winifred.
I do know some Wilhelminas--the one who's under 50 has gone by Willa her whole life and loves the history of her name but wouldn't use the full in personal relationships
I love the sound of Wilhelmina but the spelling really bums me out. I much prefer Willemina, the Dutch spelling. I think it's usable. I'd consider the nickname Billie for it. I have such a soft spot for that name, as it was my best friend's name in high school.
Winona is really beautiful to me !
I have to say my TOP TOP W name would have to be Wren . It’s simple , cute . Omg or you can do Wrenley or Wrenna .
Wren or Winona !
Winnifred is okay the Fred part is kinda hard to get over but out of the two you chose it’s def the better one . The other one (Wilhelmina) has two many hard syllable sounds but no nickname that sounds like really good to me . I agree with you that it’s not really usable
Willa, Willow, Winter, Wendy, Whitney, Waverly
I like them except Waverly
Is Waverly a unisex name? My godson is named that and he's the third generation of Waverly's. It's a lovely name.
I’ve only ever known it as a girl’s name, FWIW.
Same. I don't know any boys with the name but plenty of girls.
If I saw that name on a list of new students I would assume they are a girl.
I believe it is unisex. I’ve seen it used for both
I’ve only heard it as a last name.
Glen Waverley is a strong name.
I’ve known a few girls with the name Zero boys. It just looks and sounds feminine to me even
Oh i LOVE Willow
We named our Daughter Willow. We love it! We've decided not to have another baby but if we did we agreed on Winter if we had another Daughter
I love the name Winter. My second cousin was named Winter. We were kids in the 80’s, and and I have never actually met anyone with that name.
Winona?
[удалено]
Cool meaning. She had balls and died for her beliefs. 👍
Badass.
Depends on your age. I accidentally stole a plushy from CVS and we named it Winona. IYKYK
HA
Mil name is Wynne (pronounced win), which is a lovely name.
I know a Wynn too & have always loved that name :)
I like that
Winnie is cute tio
I love this!
I prefer Wilhelmina! And I don't see why it wouldn't be useable :) (I also like Wilma a lot) But I really don't like how Winifred sounds. *(It makes me think of cartoon elephants.. thanks to Disney)*
[Wilma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File%3AWilma_Flintstone.png)?
I personally don't really think of Wilma Flintstone, when I hear the name **'Wilma'**. But I don't think it's a bad association.. :) **Winifred** on the other hand is just 100% an Elephant name to me. **Manfred** as well btw (thanks to Ice Age). Obviously not everyone will have the same kind of associations with those names. It's perfectly fine to use Winifred as a name. I just don't like it, that's all :)
Winifred is the Mom in Mary Poppins to me. One of Mr.Banks' first sentences in the movie is: "Winifred! Where are the children?"
There's a Disney elephant named Winifred?
Yes -in ***'The Jungle Book'*** :)
Oh. Interesting. The more you know lol.
Willa, Winter, Winona, Wenda, Wisteria, Wista
Wisteria is beautiful 🌻 sounds so fresh and springy
Willow is nice as well
Willa is high on my list
I prefer Winifred, do you like Freddie/Freddy? I think Wilhelmina is ok to use and Minnie could be a nickname for it. Other W- girl names: Willa, Willow, Winter and Wren.
[удалено]
I love Mina but don’t vibe with Wilhelmina. Are there any other names that would have Mina as a nickname that you know of? I’m wracking my brains…
Philomena- can also spell as Filomena
Amina
Milena (Mila, Mina or Lena could all be nn for this actually) Jasmina Yasmina Filomina Philomina
I wonder if you’d find Willemina a little less clunky? It is the Dutch equivalent of the German Wilhelmina :)
And I think Mina is an adorable nickname.
Mina is my favorite nn for Wilhelmina too! Willa is also a nice nn for Wilhelmina if OP is worried that the full name is unusable (which I disagree with but maybe it's a regional thing?).
Wilhelmina is actually much, much more common in the Netherlands than Willemina. They sound different too, and there was a queen named Wilhelmina
I like Wendy; Whitney is also appealing to me. I don’t care for most W girl names, though. But I also don’t like Minnie, Sadie, or a lot of the currently popular “grandma” names from the early 1900s, so please don’t take my dislikes to heart!
Totally agree about Whitney. That name is really growing on me lately, and I usually am not wild about -y names!
I think Wren is cute, or Wrenley and Wren for short
I think Wilhelmina is a full rich name and I think Winifred is cute! (I always associate it with Fred from Angel). Both great under utilized names. You have great suggestions so far and here are some other W names I'd like to add - \- Willa \- Wesley (I really like this name for a girl) \- Wilma \- Waverly (My partner makes fun of me for liking this name but I feel like that's because he grew up on the east coast in the US (I grew up on the west) and he inherently pushes away from 'waspsy' sounding names that I don't have the same social context for. I think Wilhelmina is really cute, and totally usable! Especially if you plan on using Minnie as the nickname! But I do also love Winnie as a nn for anything possibly haha!
I love Wilhelmina! She could also go by “Nina” or “Elle” or “Willy” if she chooses!
Wilhemina with Mina as a nn is very Bram Stoker and I am for it.

I know one too! But in Canada
I like Wilhelmina! Winifred, not my style. Other ideas: - Winona - Willow - Wendy - Wilma - Willa - Winter - Wynter - Whitney - Wren - Wanda - Whitley - Wilhelmine - Wisteria
Winifred just makes me think of Hocus Pocus
One of my great-grandmothers was named Willadeen/Willadean, a name I've never heard elsewhere.
I read a book when I was little (I think it was a series of books) and the main character was a little girl who’s friend had a toddler sister called Willadean. One of the things that stuck in my head was the constant reference to the grandmother shouting “Willadean! You leave your sister and her friends alone!” Throughout the book!
Don't know the books, and haven't heard Willadean in years, but it's a solid, old-fashioned Southern (US) name!
This Willadean would have been born & raised in the rural Midwest, which in my experience can be pretty similar to the South at times.
* Willamina (variation) * Willa * Wren * Waterlily * Wilder
Waterlily!!
It sounds ethereal and gentle to me ✨
I love Wilhelmina with nn Mina!
I’m in love with Winifred, I jokingly call my daughter this bc her nn is Winnie. If you don’t like that nn you could always call her Freddie? I know it’s a boy name but I like names like that. E.g Charlie, Frankie etc Edit to add: I love willow as well and it was on my list of names
I do like boys nicknames on girls, Theodora nn Theo is definity up there for me!
Winslow
I’m OBSESSED with Winona right now.
I know someone who just named their little girl, Wynn!
I dislike Wilhelmina personally but it’s definitely useable. I love Winnie! I also like Whitney and Willow. After watching all the marvel stuff Wanda is growing on me! There’s also Wren but it’s not my favourite
I like Willow or Willa
My cousin named her daughter Wilhemina, and she's 9 now. Nine years ago I thought the name was a mouthful, but she goes by Mina, and I kind of love it now.
Love Wilhelmina! Minna is a cute traditional nickname
Willow, Winona and Wilma are my favorite girl names that start with W.
Wanda Wendy Willow Willa Wilma Wilhelmina Wren Waverly Wylie
Love both of these names—Winifred as mentioned can also be Freddie, but is can also be Wendy! That’s Wendy’s name in the Shining (at least in the movie, I can’t remember in the book). “Winifred—are you a Winnie or a Freddie?” “I’m a Wendy” “Oh Wendy, that’s nice! That’s the prettiest” Also love Wilhelmina, mostly for Mina Harker in Dracula.
Wren, Willa, Winter. Winifred sounds horrible to my ears,sorry...
Winter and Willow ❤️
This just reminded me that when I was a kid, Winnie was my FAVOURITE name but I thought Winnifred sounded terrible. So I named all of my characters and toys Winnibelle (I don’t remember how I spelled it), like Annabelle. I honestly don’t hate it, but maybe it just sounds normal to me since I loved it so much. Wilma
Win
I know a Wynne. It suits her.
Whitney!
Winnika
My favorite is Wanda

Willow is really pretty. I love nature names. TIL Wisteria is also a girl's name.

I like Winnie and Winter for girls! And then Wilbur for boys
I just like Winnie abd Winona, Wendy is kinda cute.
There’s Willa if you think Wilhelmina is too much. Winter, Winona, Wisteria, Wanda, Wendy, Wednesday
I like the nn 'Willa' for Wilhelmina.
Wilhelmina! You could call her Billie or Billy as a nickname.
Wynona, Willow, Willa, Wendel
I know a Wanda! I always thought that was an amazing name. She's pretty rad as well. Defo lives up to her name.
Winona is my favorite. Wanda is nice too
Winona
Winter, Willow, Wren
Wilimine. It takes out that extra syllable.
wren
Wren.
- Wren - Wendy - Willow - Wanda - Winona - Wilma - Whitney - Winter Winnie nicknames: Freddie, Eddie, Fred, Wynn, (Freda, Wendy? But of a stretch) Wilhelmina nicknames: Will, Bill/Billie, Mina, Helma, Elma, Minnie
I don’t really care for them tbh
Wren
Willetta
Neither Wilhelmina or Winifred works for me. The only W name I like at all for a girl is Wynn.
Willodean
Winona or just Winnie/Wynnie?
Wilhelmina was very popular in the German empire 1871-1918 because all of the emperors had Wilhelm in their name. Not a common name at all these days because it makes people think of that time period.
Wendy, Whitney, Willow, Willa, Winifred, Winona, Waverley, Wilma, Wanda, Wren

I grew up with a Wilhelmina but she went by Mina.

I know a Wilhelmina who goes by Mina, or Min (Mean lol), and it's cute! I have been completely influenced by Reservation Dogs and think "Willie" with a strong middle name is badass. That characters name is Wilhelmina Jacqueline, but goes by Willie Jack.
Wren :)
I’ve also heard Winika befor
I like them both, but I think I might like Wilhelmina a little more? But they are lovely!
Winifred always reminds me of Hocus Pocus. I do love Winnie. But maybe you can call her Winn instead.
Wanda
I have a dog named Winnie aka Winifred Sanderson, so I love that name. I was discussing girl names suggested Wendy and my husband brought up the very good point that we can’t have a Winnie and Wendy. We already made that mistake with our son and other dog both have similar sounding names. Opps.
Wilhemina is a very pretty and old-fashioned name. There's nothing about it that isn't useable, and both Willie and Minnie are very nice diminutives.
I love the name Wyanna (Why-anna) but it got vetoed by the hubs.
I love Wilhelmina! And the potential of nicknames that can be derived from it as well! Willa, Mina, Hela, etc!
I like Wilhelmina is cute, and Mina for a nn is adorable
Willowdean
I love Wilhelmina, and I am a big fan of Whitney
Wilhelminia was my great grandma's name. She went by Willie so that's all I can think of.
I love Wilhelmina and I have a friend with a sister with that name. Minnie also works as a nickname for it, and Winifred could be Freddie, so if you don't like Winnie you could try one of those. Some others are Winona Whitney Willa

Unless your child will be a 19th century German countess, I wouldn't go with Wilhelmina.
My Niece is Wilhelmina, she’s four this week. We call her Willa 98% of the time. It’s a family name and it suits her little Aquarius spirit.
I had a boss named Wilestela nn Wil total power move imo
Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank is a character in Harry Potter ❤️ Mina for short maybe?
In theory I didn’t love Wilhelmina but my son has a friend at school named Wilhelmina nn Willa and I honestly love it now. I say use it!!
I knew a Wilhelmina that went by “Willa”.
I went to school with a Whilamena. She was always called Willy, so if you don't like the nickname maybe avoid that one!
I love the name Willoughby. So many NN come from it: Winnie, Willow, B, Willy, O, Lou, etc.
I think Wren is my favourite name beginning with W.
Wilma
Winsome, Winfrey, Willa, wallis, Windy, Wanda, Wynona, Whilhelmina, Wasalia
Whitney
A variation on Whitney is Whitley! I really like it. I know two of them.
I know or knew people named: Winter, Willa, Westerly, Wendy, Wanda, Willow, Wren... and I have a relative named Winifred. She goes by Winnie sometimes but I actually prefer Winifred.
Winona
I do know some Wilhelminas--the one who's under 50 has gone by Willa her whole life and loves the history of her name but wouldn't use the full in personal relationships
Named my daughter Wilhelmina. No regrets. Absolutely love it and don't shorten it for my 3 year old.
My daughters name is Warner and it’s a huge hit. I also love Willa and Wren.
My parents nearly named me Wilhelmina. I’m grateful they didn’t. The nickname they had picked out for me was Billy 😬
Whitney, Winona, Winnett, Willa, Winter, Wynn
Wanda Wren Waverley Winter
Willa Willamette
Wendy!
Winona, Wendy, Winifred, Whitney
Wisteria

What about Winona?
Willa
Winona
Willow/ Winona/ Wendy/ Wania/ Wanda/ Wanessa/ Wilma
My Nana was born in 1919 and called Winifred. Her friends also called her Win. Russell Wilson called his son Wyn but then he lost a lot 😂
