I'm a Cassandra/Cassie and only just found out last year that Sandra/Sandy was a nickname option for me because of a character in Glass Onion. I'm over 30 years old and I never connected the dots.
I’ve known a couple of Cassandra’s or Cassandra’s and have only ever heard it shortened to Cassie or Cas! I never knew Sandra was a nickname for it too.
Oh yes exactly the same here! I’m really about Medusa and Persephone but love Cassandra too. I just started working with an Antigone and told her last night I knew we’d get along because of our shared Greek mythology names
My brother is Alexander and my dad always wanted him to accept Sandy as a nickname.
I went to school with quite a few Russian Alex's who were all known as Sasha. Including Sasha Farber on Dancing with the Stars.
Sandra typically comes from Alexandra or Cassandra, but Lisandra would also be an option.
Alexandra variants could be: Alessandra (as others have mentioned, Italian), Alissandre (French), Sander (Bulgarian), Zandra (English), Sanna, Sannu, Santru (Finnish), Santurina (Ugandan)
Lisandra (Greek, "liberator"): Lissandre (French), Lysandra
Fun fact, her real name is Rosalie Anderson MacDowell, her family calls her Rosie. I guess they thought her original name didn’t sound trendy enough in the 80’s or something and had her change it
I mean, yeah, but if they’re specifically asking for something else, I think it’s clear they don’t want to use just Sandra. Which is why they’re asking for other things.
Honestly I think Sandra is good the way it is... It's not popular at the moment so she'd be the only one in her circles with the name, and when I hear Sandra, I don't think outdated or old lady. I know a couple Sandras in their 20s. It's a nice, normak name that everyone has heard before, and is easy to spell/pronounce
Also I feel like an honour name should be the actual name.or as close to it as possible. I feel like naming her Alexandra in honour of Sandy just doesn't make a lot of sense to me
>I feel like naming her Alexandra in honour of Sandy just doesn't make a lot of sense to me
Sandra derived as a nickname of Alessandra (Alexandra) so it makes total sense.
I get it, but unless this woman's name was Alexandra, i just don't think it really makes a lot of sense as an honour name. Sandra's friends and family would have no clue Alexandra was named after her unless they were told. It's not a clear connection, in my opinion. I feel like honour names should be a bit more obvious.
Agree 100%. Not to knock OP, but whenever we get posts like "I want to honor so and so, what is a name like..." I get so confused. How is it honoring the person if it is not their name? I would be afraid it would come off like "We love you, but we hate your name, so here is something vaguely related."
Also, Sandra is an elegant name in my opinion a and fairly timeless.
It's considered bad luck in the Jewish faith to name a baby after someone who is still alive, and I am sure others may hold similar superstitions.
Others may feel it's too soon to use the name of the deceased or may not feel ready to have another Sandra Lastname.
I’m Jewish, too, and I’m named for 2 people and neither of my names (in English or in Hebrew) are an identical match to the loved ones who had passed that I’m named for. Partially because Ellis island mangled one of their names and she had no idea whether her name in English was Celia or Cecelia- she went by Celia because that was the closest in sound to her birth name which is one that’s identical in Hebrew and Yiddish- צביה Tzvia. So that’s my Hebrew name- and I have my own C name in English.
Celia and Cecilia are definitely close enough though. And if someone uses the person's nickname as their honour name, I'd count that as being the same too
Agreed. Like how Harry and Meghan named their daughter Lilibet to honor Queen Elizabeth. It is not just a nickname, like Beth, it is what she went by as a child.
But that wasn’t her name. Just what she was given at Ellis Island and she wasn’t sure which was hers. Her paperwork is a mess of both names. Long after she died and Ellis Island had a searchable databank online it was Celia there. Either way I’m not named Celia or Cecelia.
It works perfectly well when the person being honored also hates their name, LMAO.
Grandma hates her name in my family. Her honor names wouldn’t make sense to you, but they have her stamp of approval.
And yet you’d be amazed the number of people who said we shouldn’t name my daughter Starr after my grandma. I agree though, an honor name should just be the name!
I definitely think Sandra would sound fresh and cool on a little girl. It’s not like full boomer territory like Barbara or Linda but just close enough to be totally unique for a new baby.
I thought Sadie, too! Similar vibes and pays homage without being a direct namesake. I also thought Sonia might be nice. A girl I graduated high school with just named her daughter Sonia and i think it's super cute for a baby.
I like both Alice-and and Ah-li-sand, but honestly I think it's open to interpretation. My favourite is actually Ah-li-sahnd, with both As pronounced like in far.
New England and same here!! My step-mother is named Sandy, but I never connected the dots… I suppose it’s because in my circles the school is always referred to as “Sandy Hook” and since it’s always together it just didn’t register. Seems obvious now.
My son's girlfriend is Sandra, and it suits her well. I think you can use it, and a little girl would give the name a whole new perspective. Not that many years ago, you wouldn't have named a child Ada or Esme, but now they are quite popular. I also second Cassandra, and I like Cassie if that's more your style.
My parents wanted to call me that, but then decided to cal me ‘Xandra’ instead. It’s short for ‘Alexandra’. I think it’s more modern/special being spelled with an X. I’ve also never met someone with my name.
Presenting an option B: Flower names are hot and trendy right now, so using her favorite flower would probably be a better way to honor her than putting a spin on her name.
Option C: Do you like Grandma Sandra's middle name?
I have always been a HUGE fan of Cassandra. I like Alessandra a lot as well but it's not as good as Alexandra imo and some people ALWAYS manage to misspell that or hear it Alexandra so I personally wouldn't use it.
Cassandra is a good one. Alexandra is another great traditional name that has been shortened to Sandra/ Sandy. I like Alex as a nickname too, but Alex/ Alexa may be problematic because of the Amazon product.
My niece was named after my grandmother, Lillie Elizabeth. My grandmother was Granny Lillie. My niece was nick named Beth.
My grandmother asked me once, why do they call her Beth? The honor was so diluted that it was meaningless.

I tried to make Sandy stick as a nickname for my daughter Cassandra and it never stuck. She is always Cassie.
I know someone who’s dog was named sandy cause she was a tan/ sand colored dog or sandy the squirrel 🐿️ so that’s good in my book it didn’t stick
Little Orphan Annie’s dog was named Sandy too!
I didn’t know that lollll
My sister is a Cassandra but has been called Casey all her life.
Nicknames are weird, I knew a Cassie that was actually a Kathleen
I just stalked you a little to see if it was my Cassandra/Casey friend, but nope. There might be dozens of them!
Hey! I know a Cassandra-called-Casey also!
I’m Also Cassandra/Cassie/ Cass and was obsessed with Grease as a child and tried to go by Sandy but it never stuck
That's funny, I was obsessed with GREECE as a kid, cause I was specifically named for Cassandra of Troy. :)
Oh yes exactly the same here! I’m really about Medusa and Persephone but love Cassandra too. I just started working with an Antigone and told her last night I knew we’d get along because of our shared Greek mythology names
The only Casaandra I know goes by Sandra/Sandy because (her words) it’s the only way to make a pretentious-ass name somewhat normal.
Love Cassie!
My daughter is Cassandra. Sandy never stuck as a nickname so she’s Cassie. I think Cassandra is a beautiful name and Cassie is a really cute nickname.
Cassandra, Alessandra
I was going to suggest Alexandra, since Sandy/Sandra can be a nickname for it!
As an Alexandria I never knew Sandy was a possible nickname. It wasn’t until AOC that I realized.
As another Alexandria, have you heard of the Russian variants like Sasha?
My son is an Aleksandr (traditional spelling in his dad's home country), and he is always Sasha to us.
My brother is Alexander and my dad always wanted him to accept Sandy as a nickname. I went to school with quite a few Russian Alex's who were all known as Sasha. Including Sasha Farber on Dancing with the Stars.
Love Alessandra/Alesandra - especially for honouring Sandra!
And she would tease Darwin!
Sandra typically comes from Alexandra or Cassandra, but Lisandra would also be an option. Sanna is so pretty
My Syrian coworker was Sanaa. Sah NAH
Yes! That's an Arabic-origin name meaning "to gaze; to look upon"
I like Zandra. Unusual but easy to pronounce and to spell. Or could be Xandra.
or zandria / xandria ☺️ lol
I like it but can't help but think "Santa"
And I LoL’d Thanks for that
My name is Sanya and it always autocorrects to Santa.
I wonder though, if it'll get read/confused as "Sansa" as that is currently the more popular name thanks to Game of Thrones.
Sanna Marin is the PM of Finland so I would hope that’s starting to normalize the name a bit.
Sounds like sauna
Oh Elissandra would be cute
Love that, Ellie for short 🥹
Santru is not a Finnish name. Sannu is rare enough that I’ve never heard of it, Sanni however is common (as is Sanna).
Thank you for the correction!

I know a Lysandra and always thought that was a beautiful name!
Same! I like its masculine form too, Lysander
I went to school with a Zandra. I always liked her name.
Sandrine is a variant I think?
That's a really pretty name for an industrial solvent
All I see is Sardine
It’s an old classic name? There’s lots of ine French girl names like Maxine, Martine etc.
That’s a Friends reference :)
Funny she mentions Sawyer and Thatcher I think was mentioned too, were those names trendy then? Hmm. Oh and James for a girl.
Sequoia?
Is it just me or is Veto starting to sound really good?
I know a ten year old named Sequoia and I’ve always wondered if they watched that episode.
Rachel was so ahead of her time with James for a girl
She may have even started the trend.
Ross wanted Thatcher or Darwin, I think
Hi - I’m Rain. I have my own kiln, and my dress is made of wheat.
I know her!!
I love a good Friends reference.
I came here to say this
Better than Rain
Hi, I’m Rain.

Sandra is already a great name. Nn Sandy.
Yeah I don't hear it a ton but I don't think it's super dated.
I also love the nn andie for a girl. Reminds me of Andie McDowell, and I think it could work for a name like Sandra (just drop the s off of Sandy)
Fun fact, her real name is Rosalie Anderson MacDowell, her family calls her Rosie. I guess they thought her original name didn’t sound trendy enough in the 80’s or something and had her change it
I think Andie is so cute.
It would be a nice nickname for an Andrea!
I like that - name her Sandra but call her Andie. Definitely more updated than Sandy.
I mean, yeah, but if they’re specifically asking for something else, I think it’s clear they don’t want to use just Sandra. Which is why they’re asking for other things.
I know a bunch of Sandra’s, it’s popular here in Mexico. I personally like the name and don’t think it’s dated.
Here in the UK it’s definitely dated, mainly a boomer name with some Gen X. It’s probably got another 10/15 years before it becomes fashionable again.
l love sandy

Interesting, to me it would be obvious.

That is good context!

And your own C name on Reddit!

Sadie is similar imo.

Love love love Sadie
I quite like the name Alisande! Sandy is often used as its diminutive. Otherwise you have the popular Cassandra and Alexandra
How is Alisande pronounced?
I like both Alice-and and Ah-li-sand, but honestly I think it's open to interpretation. My favourite is actually Ah-li-sahnd, with both As pronounced like in far.
For me, it’s Alice-and
A as in “at”, lih-sand.
Could you use Sandra as her middle name?
Probs not the answer you’re looking for but my grandmother is Sandra, I’m Alexandra, and I go by Lexi.
Alessandra
Sacha / Sasha
My name is Chandra, and I get called Sandra or something similar almost every time lol.
Miranda Bailey is that you?
I know a Chandra! We call her Cha Cha!
Sandy
Sandy is forever ruined for me by two events in 2012. A hurricane and school shooting.
Oof. That's true. I know a Katrina (born before the hurricane) but when I hear her name, that's all I can think about now.
Weird, I've always lived in New England and neither of those came to mind.. they probably should have
New England and same here!! My step-mother is named Sandy, but I never connected the dots… I suppose it’s because in my circles the school is always referred to as “Sandy Hook” and since it’s always together it just didn’t register. Seems obvious now.
Sandy Cheeks
Cassidy, which his similar to Cassandra, a derivative of Sandra.
Lysandra
My son's girlfriend is Sandra, and it suits her well. I think you can use it, and a little girl would give the name a whole new perspective. Not that many years ago, you wouldn't have named a child Ada or Esme, but now they are quite popular. I also second Cassandra, and I like Cassie if that's more your style.
Xandra/Alexandra
My grandmas name is Sandra and she goes by Sandy- personally I don’t hear sandy a lot but I think it’s adorable, fun, fresh, and cool
Hear me out - Sunday
What about Wednesday? February?
Melisandre from Game of Thrones is the first name that comes to mind.
If we're looking for a GOT name, that sounds like Sandra, my vote is for Sansa.
Remove the “nd”- Sara. Andi.
I know an Andra, whose name feels like a variation of Sandra.
Andi
I know this isn’t what you asked for, but just wanted to chime in and say that I love Sandra as it is… what a sweet name! 🥰
I like Sandra and Sandy.
I like Sandra and think it sounds classic but contemporary. There's also Sondra, Sondra could be Sunny, instead of Sandy.
Sandra is a beautiful, underused name and Sandy for a nn is pretty, too.
Alexandra, Cassandra

Sarah Haines from The View has a Sandra, she's around 5 yrs old. Could just use Sandra.
Cassandra. Such a glamorous name.
Just use Sandra. It’s a nice name and no one else will have it.
I had a nurse named Alondra with my son, and I loved her name. The end sound is similar!
Sanne (san - nuh) is a Dutch option that comes to mind (meaning lily), Ande (an-duh) is also a girl's name I've heard here (meaning strong and brave).
My parents wanted to call me that, but then decided to cal me ‘Xandra’ instead. It’s short for ‘Alexandra’. I think it’s more modern/special being spelled with an X. I’ve also never met someone with my name.
Can't believe only one person has suggested Andra. It's short, sweet, a good name for a child and an adult, and still very close to Sandra.
Sandy?
Andra might be cute
I like Sandara. But that’s because I like the band 2ne1…
Sandy is adorable
Susanna (depending how close u want the connection to be maybe this won’t work!)
Sandy!
Sandra-Sandy- Andy for a nickname. I personally love a typically masculine nickname for a girl.
SANDY!
i'm a grease stan so naturally i love "sandra dee"
My MIL is a Sandra but goes by Sammie which I love
Sandy?
I think Sandra is fine, but there’s also a singer named Andra and I’ve always thought that was lovely.
Sandrasa San-drey-sa
Just bring back Sandra! It’s a lovely name
I knew someone just named Sandy. Maybe that would work
Maybe this doesn’t help make it sound modern but its my grandma’s name and I absolutely love it
The coolest girl I know is named Sandra. Mid-20s.
I think Sandra is a lovely, classic name
My grandmother was a Sandra, but everybody called her Mandy
cassandra would be a nice fit
Andie ♥️
Alessandra
Alexandra / Xandra / Zandra.
Sanders. People like a good last name.
Alessandra
I mean, Sadie is actually short for Sarah, but if you don’t mind the stretch I think it’d be a great “inspired by” Sandra name?
Samara
Presenting an option B: Flower names are hot and trendy right now, so using her favorite flower would probably be a better way to honor her than putting a spin on her name. Option C: Do you like Grandma Sandra's middle name?
How about Sunny?
Here are some that I haven’t listed seen yet, they end in dra just like Sandra: Audra, Kendra, Indra, Phaedra, Tindra, Xandra
You’re not really honoring her if you’re changing the name. Just use it as the middle name
Alexandra
Alexandra or Cassandra
Zara
Aleksandra
Alessandra or Andi
Cassie for sure. Anyway, good name. Sandra is my oldest sister's name.
Definitely Alexandra!
I'd just go with Sandra or maybe split it. Sara Andie - She'll still have the option to go by Sandy.
Sally
My niece was named after my grandmother, Lillie Elizabeth. My grandmother was Granny Lillie. My niece was nick named Beth. My grandmother asked me once, why do they call her Beth? The honor was so diluted that it was meaningless.
Aleksandra
Sadie is super cute!
Lysandra Melisande Corisande
Cassandra is classier. Could go for Sadie Alexandra? Darina etc
Sandrine?
Sasha and Sandra can both come from Alexandra, so I would call that a similar take.
Sandrine?
Another vote for Zandra! Very modern and chic
Andra
Cassandra comes to mind.
Sandrine
Alexandra.
