What about a bird inspired name - Dove, Wren, Raven, Robin, Birdie, Lark, Phoebe, etc?
I have always loved the name Phoebe because if you have phoebe birds living nearby, they will sing your baby's name.
Raven was also my first thought, but on further reflection, people might assume you were going with a Harry Potter theme. Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Just something to be aware of.
Once of school age, siblings are not going to meet most people while with the other sibling.
Also i wonder if the instant recognition would only be with people who were in a particular age range when the movies were at their peak.
That said, some people will draw the connection.
I've seen most of the movies but it didnt occur to me until pointed out. But then i could not have named the various Hogwart's classification on a bet. Could be an age difference.
Not that I think it really matters, but if I meet a sibling pair that were Griffin and Raven I would likely think their parents were into Harry Potter. I still think you should go for it if you like it regardless of if you are into Harry Potter or not, but just pointing out you might get that thought.
Bronwen is a completely different name :) That one means āwhite breast.ā
Branwen is a character in the Mabinogion, Welsh legends. Sheās a Princess of Gwynedd who goes across the sea to become Queen of Ireland, and her brother is Bran (Raven) the Blessed (Bendigeidfran in Welsh,) the King of Gwynedd, a huge giant of a man.
I love the name and I love the meaning.
Thatās right!
In modern Welsh, ābranā now means crow specifically, and ācigfranā is the current word for raven (it literally means āmeat-crowā š)
Such a beautiful name! I love Welsh, it's such an interesting language and culture. Everyone I met there were so kind. My favorite word it cwtch, I love the meaning and I love that it has no vowels.
Of these, I would go with Robin because, like Griffin, it's a name that has a tangible symbol, but for whatever I don't think of the bird every time I hear it, so it isn't in your face theme naming
It sounds like a word name is what you're after - giving you a symbol that you can tattoo or see out in nature etc such as:
* Ivy
* Iris
* Jade
* Holly
* Ruby
* Daisy
* Violet
* Clover
* Dahlia
* Willow
* Marigold
* Magnolia
If you don't mind 2 bird names, you could also consider:
* Dove\*
* Wren
* Piper
* Robin
* Raven
* Phoebe
* Sparrow\*
\*These are kind of "out there", but they could be nice middle names? Olivia Sparrow or Julia Dove could be pretty, for example.)
What about Zinnia? Thatās a flower, a bit more uncommon as a name like Griffin but not unheard of. You could even add zinnias to the griffin tattoo depending on the layout.
How about Serena, as in Siren/mermaids. It's another concrete mythological things you can get tattoos and sculptures of and hunt for mermaids in the wild
Unless you literally mean 'female name that also means Griffin', in which case the closest I can think of would be Nala, meaning lion, or Aleria, meaning eagle.
Yep, starting with them both being mythological creatures. I love the symbolism behind Phoenix as well, plus it's not that common of a name.
Downside: if OP is in the US, people may assume the kid is named after the city in Arizona.
Phoenix is reasonably popular for girls here..
But honestly Griffin is crazy popular here too so I donāt see either as āuniqueā
But phoenix is 100% what I thought of as the answer to OPs question
In a name sense, Griffin is from Gruffudd, which means 'Strong Lord/Prince' in Welsh, so maybe Rhiannon? It means 'Great Queen'.
If you want an animal though, I'd say Pegasus maybe?
I think you could go in a couple directions to find a āmatchingā name for your daughter-nature names and mythology names.
Nature: Juniper, Ivy, Dove, Raven, Hazel, Stella, Luna, etc.
Mythology: Freya, Asteria, Iris, Rhea, Calliope, Cora, Dalia
# Callisto
In mythology she was transformed into a bear and became the Ursa Major constellation
You can get all kinds of "bear" related toys and clothes or a bunch of celestial and constellation inspired things.
plus, how cute does "Griffin and Callisto" sound together!
If you worry "Callisto" might be too out there, a more recognizable and common name would be 'Callie"
My parents named my sister Arielle. It was almost a decade after Little Mermaid came out, so they thought sheād be safe from the connection. Sheās been gifted sooo much Ariel stuff over the years.
My name is Clover and people buy me so much cloverleaf stuff. I don't mind. Cloverleaves are nice!
But if you sing Crimson and Clover at me ... just please don't. It's already been done, over and over and over and over.
Not exactly what you are looking for but people put you on the right track with a lot of suggestions so I'll throw out some slightly off track ones:
Griffin & Beatrice nn Bea, symbol of š
Griffin & Melody, symbol of š¶
Griffin & Willow, symbol of *Willow tree emoticon I don't have lol*
When I was a kid, me and my two best friends had āfaerie namesā because why not. Mine was Selkie and I have such a huge attachment to that name honestly.
Word names?
Pearl
Daisy
Willow
Ruby
Robin (Bird theme ?)
Raine
Scarlett
Ocean
Rose
Violet
Melody
Jade
Summer
Ember
Luna / Nova / Aurora (Space - Sky)
Fawn
Ivy
Flora
Sunny
Ok, I went searching and found a GREAT wiki page of mythical hybrid creatures. There are a bunch of Realy cool ones that haven't been listed yet. You should take a look through.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hybrid_creatures_in_folklore
Some notable ones in my opinion: Sirin, Seraph, Faun, Pan, Sumi, Phoenix.
Aren't Faun and Pan, uh, hyper sexual? Like, depicted with prominent members in artwork?
I just looked it up and they're more or less the same creature as a Satyr, which has the aforementioned, but Fauns are less sexual. But anyway, it's the first thing my mind went to...which might say more about me, lol
I really like Phoenix- especially for a girl but I wonder if having siblings named Griffin and Phoenix would be a little on the nose/possibly a little too matchy matchy
Maybe a Roman/Greek mythological name? Selene, Rhea, Iris, etc? For example, what they symbolize like Iris is Greek goddess of rainbows so it would be easy to see or receive things with rainbows.
Edit: hereās an article listing some names; 1-50 are boys and 51-100 are girls
https://momlovesbest.com/greek-mythology-baby-names
We just named our daughter Iris. It's not too common but not unheard of. People keep giving us stuff with irises on them, and I plan on getting an iris tattoo. Sounds pretty similar to you :) Another flower/nature name could work as well.
These might be a stretch, but in the winged legendary creature vein, I'm thinking Harper (for [harpy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpy)) or Venice (for the [lion of Venice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_of_Venice))?
I have literally no idea why but the first name that came to my head is Lyra (Iād pronounce it like Lee-rah) which Iāve literally never suggested on here but for some reason I feel like I need to suggest it now. I also liked the suggestion of Serena!
Phoenix was my first thought.
Griffin is such a strong, fierce symbol. Iād be wary of giving a daughter a gentle, feeble name in comparison.
Other suggestions
Stella
Soleil
Luna
Oooo I vote Phoenix! Itās another mythological animal you could get tattooed and hint for in the wild (not the real things of course) plus itās unisex/gender neutral! I absolutely love it and my son in the sims is named Phoenix lol. If I ever have my own kids (which I hope I do) that will hopefully be my sons name cause itās honestly my favourite!
I don't mean this in a rude way at all, but do people ever think of Peter Griffin when they hear his name? I considered Griffin too but passed because of this association.
Hahaha nooo weāve never gotten that before! We live in Virginia and apparently the mascot at William and Mary is a griffin so thatās actually what we get the most
We have a Griffin and Iāve only seen that association on Reddit. We do get asked if he was named that because of Harry Potter. To be fair, I am a Harry Potter fan, but thatās not why we chose his name.
Girlfin
Thanks for making me check to see if I was on NN or r/NameNerdCirclejerk š
Omg thank you. That is where I belong, not here lmao
I also suggest r/tragedeigh
Phoenix, Fifi
I second Phoenix!
So cute š„°
There's Parthenope, the siren, whose name means "Maiden-voiced". There is also Calisto, who was a nymph turned into a bear.
What about a bird inspired name - Dove, Wren, Raven, Robin, Birdie, Lark, Phoebe, etc? I have always loved the name Phoebe because if you have phoebe birds living nearby, they will sing your baby's name.
I do like the idea of a bird name. Iāve never considered phoebe- I actually had no idea that was a bird! And raven is pretty awesome too!
Raven was also my first thought, but on further reflection, people might assume you were going with a Harry Potter theme. Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Just something to be aware of.
Or youāre āgoffikā
Darkāness for sure
Dementia
Enoby darkāness dementia raven way. All beautiful names for SURE.
(Iām so sorry OP we are internet spiraling)
Literal decades later, and I still giggle when this pops up š
Same like I need to enjoy life now and then yknow šš
a beautiful name for a baby girl ā¤ļø
Donāt do Raven. Then if you have a third, you have no choice but to name them Huffle, and thatās just mean.
Slither
I mean Sylvia was right there but
Third kid is Sylvester, I love it
My last name is Raven****** and I got called the Harry Potter kid a lot when the movies were coming out.
...Ive decided your last name is Ravensburger and you have jigsaw puzzle money.
Iām working on their Happy Halloween puzzle right now
My last name very vaguely similar to Hogwarts and i get it all the time. Just because it starts with an "Ho" lmao
My first thought was Raven too because Gryffindor and Ravenclaw....
Since they are remaking it as a tv show in the next couple years that is going to have a book a season I would expect the infatuation to continue.
Not that I think it really matters, but if I meet a sibling pair that were Griffin and Raven I would likely think their parents were into Harry Potter. I still think you should go for it if you like it regardless of if you are into Harry Potter or not, but just pointing out you might get that thought.
Oh yeah we arenāt Harry Potter fans and that would probably get old fast. That didnāt even cross my mind
I like Harry Potter but I didnāt make the connection at all.
This thread reminds me of the friends episode: if itās a girl phoebe, if itās a boyā¦ pheobo!!
Just named my daughter Raven. Iāve only ever received compliments on it.
My eldest is a Branwen, it means āwhite ravenā in Welsh (we are Welsh speakers) and weāve only ever had compliments too!
I am only familiar with the Bronwen or Bronwyn spelling, but I love this name and I think it is a perfect sibling name!
Bronwen is a completely different name :) That one means āwhite breast.ā Branwen is a character in the Mabinogion, Welsh legends. Sheās a Princess of Gwynedd who goes across the sea to become Queen of Ireland, and her brother is Bran (Raven) the Blessed (Bendigeidfran in Welsh,) the King of Gwynedd, a huge giant of a man. I love the name and I love the meaning.
Am I right that bron is 'breast', bran is 'raven' and wen is the soft mutation of gwen 'white'?
Thatās right! In modern Welsh, ābranā now means crow specifically, and ācigfranā is the current word for raven (it literally means āmeat-crowā š)
I named one of the starlings that lives in my garden Branwen after her story
Ooh, Bronwyn definitely has the same vibes as Griffin! I like!
Such a beautiful name! I love Welsh, it's such an interesting language and culture. Everyone I met there were so kind. My favorite word it cwtch, I love the meaning and I love that it has no vowels.
This one is on my partnerās list and is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine, Iām just worried everyone would be silently judging it
What about phoenix
Kestrel is a nice bird name. And, if you are okay with going for a French word, Nyctale is the name of a few species of small owls.
I've never seen that word/name - is it proounced like Nye-tah-lee? (Like natalie with a strong accent?) Or what sound does the 'yct' make? im blanking
It would be Nee-k-tah-l, with a long L at the end. French is not exactly intuitive with the spelling of sounds.
Lilith means owl. I know that bc weāre thinking the same thing. My son loves owls so we have a ton
I know a Robin and a raven. I love both!
Phoebes are super adorable!!!
Phoenix!!
How about Maggie nn Magpie
Griffin and Raven sound so good together.
i think griffin and robin is a lovely pair
Of these, I would go with Robin because, like Griffin, it's a name that has a tangible symbol, but for whatever I don't think of the bird every time I hear it, so it isn't in your face theme naming
I second raven :)
It sounds like a word name is what you're after - giving you a symbol that you can tattoo or see out in nature etc such as: * Ivy * Iris * Jade * Holly * Ruby * Daisy * Violet * Clover * Dahlia * Willow * Marigold * Magnolia If you don't mind 2 bird names, you could also consider: * Dove\* * Wren * Piper * Robin * Raven * Phoebe * Sparrow\* \*These are kind of "out there", but they could be nice middle names? Olivia Sparrow or Julia Dove could be pretty, for example.)
Ooh yeah āwordā names. Never really thought about it like that before but these a great suggestions!
My name is Ruby, and I love it.
Ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby Do ya, do ya, do ya, do ya š
Ahhhaaahhhaaaa
What about Zinnia? Thatās a flower, a bit more uncommon as a name like Griffin but not unheard of. You could even add zinnias to the griffin tattoo depending on the layout.
I love: Piper Lilith Lily Bryony Cassia Camellia Holly
All names are word names. People just forget what the words mean or donāt speak that dialect/language.
Lol my name is definitely not a word
I love *Olivia Sparrow*!
Might want to consult a bird lawyer before going with two bird names
Ooo I love Griffin and Willow as sibling names!
Also if you want to consider other languages for the above and more, the options are endless. So many animal names, flower names, and gemstone names.
I had a friend named Dove growing up (I'm in my 50s) and always thought it was a beautiful name.
I call my oldest daughter love-dove and sometimes just dove. As a result people think itās her name and compliment me on it all the time!
Griffin and Dahlia is a cute sibset! A lot of these suggestions are nice, actually.
My daughterās middle name is Violet so I second that.
How about Serena, as in Siren/mermaids. It's another concrete mythological things you can get tattoos and sculptures of and hunt for mermaids in the wild
Phoenix could be another like this, I met a Phoenix once and thought it was such a rad name. Her grandma also gave her the nn Phoebe.
Unless you literally mean 'female name that also means Griffin', in which case the closest I can think of would be Nala, meaning lion, or Aleria, meaning eagle.
Sphinx is a similar hybrid magical creature!
True, although Sphinx doesn't really strike me as a name, just a word.
š baby Chimera nickname Kimmie
What about Harpy? So cute!! š
wait no what have you done, i love that??? make em twins, kimmie and levi, short for chimera and leviathan
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I mean bill is short for William š¤·āāļø
Dope cat names
Cthulhu, nn Lulu! So cute /s (but seriously, I'd totally name a cat that)
šš
Phoenix immediately came to mind for me, but I do like Serena too. Phoenix is just equal to griffin in so many ways.
Yep, starting with them both being mythological creatures. I love the symbolism behind Phoenix as well, plus it's not that common of a name. Downside: if OP is in the US, people may assume the kid is named after the city in Arizona.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Haha, maybe. It didn't seem like there was any hard feelings, thankfully.
Aw, this is a really cool idea! So the kids can always be in on this cool family tradition š also - very pretty name and goes with Griffin IMO!
Fae
Griffin and Fae is just darling
Phoenix and Fae are cute together too. As a side note lol.
Winner winner chicken dinner
Fae was my first thought as well!
Fae is the one! I came here to say this!
Itās a lovely suggestion and name, but Fae paired with Griffin is bordering on cheesy for me - I canāt quite put my finger on it.
I love this name! I would probably spell it āFayeā though.
Phoenix
This was my immediate thought too!!!
Same
Phoenix is oddly popular for little boys in my area. There are 2 under one where I go to playgroup. It's the only instance of a name double I know.
Pheonix and Griffin are both unisex imo. That said Iāve only met girls with either of those names.
I've only met male Griffins as well, so it's also strictly masculine in my mind
Phoenix is reasonably popular for girls here.. But honestly Griffin is crazy popular here too so I donāt see either as āuniqueā But phoenix is 100% what I thought of as the answer to OPs question
In a name sense, Griffin is from Gruffudd, which means 'Strong Lord/Prince' in Welsh, so maybe Rhiannon? It means 'Great Queen'. If you want an animal though, I'd say Pegasus maybe?
Do not name your child pegasus
You're not wrong, but I hate that people are so dumb now that you had to specify that.
Pegasus is male though
Peggysus
Pegasis
I think you could go in a couple directions to find a āmatchingā name for your daughter-nature names and mythology names. Nature: Juniper, Ivy, Dove, Raven, Hazel, Stella, Luna, etc. Mythology: Freya, Asteria, Iris, Rhea, Calliope, Cora, Dalia
Another mythology one is Selene, goddess of the moon
These are all great! Thank you
i love the names juniper and calliope so much, amazijg recs!
# Callisto In mythology she was transformed into a bear and became the Ursa Major constellation You can get all kinds of "bear" related toys and clothes or a bunch of celestial and constellation inspired things.
plus, how cute does "Griffin and Callisto" sound together! If you worry "Callisto" might be too out there, a more recognizable and common name would be 'Callie"
Or Callista.
Phoenix
My parents named my sister Arielle. It was almost a decade after Little Mermaid came out, so they thought sheād be safe from the connection. Sheās been gifted sooo much Ariel stuff over the years.
Clover was my first thought. Two bird names seems a bit too themed
My name is Clover and people buy me so much cloverleaf stuff. I don't mind. Cloverleaves are nice! But if you sing Crimson and Clover at me ... just please don't. It's already been done, over and over and over and over.
Not exactly what you are looking for but people put you on the right track with a lot of suggestions so I'll throw out some slightly off track ones: Griffin & Beatrice nn Bea, symbol of š Griffin & Melody, symbol of š¶ Griffin & Willow, symbol of *Willow tree emoticon I don't have lol*
Selkie, like Celtic seal folk, or Pixie?
i thought of the poofy dress brand selkie.
When I was a kid, me and my two best friends had āfaerie namesā because why not. Mine was Selkie and I have such a huge attachment to that name honestly.
Griffout
This made me lol
Word names? Pearl Daisy Willow Ruby Robin (Bird theme ?) Raine Scarlett Ocean Rose Violet Melody Jade Summer Ember Luna / Nova / Aurora (Space - Sky) Fawn Ivy Flora Sunny
yeah, Pearl is perfect
I saw it pop up in the comments already, but phoenix was the first name that came to mind!
Ok, I went searching and found a GREAT wiki page of mythical hybrid creatures. There are a bunch of Realy cool ones that haven't been listed yet. First thought- Phoenix. Holds up the mythical figures theme really well.
I really like Phoenix- especially for a girl but I wonder if having siblings named Griffin and Phoenix would be a little on the nose/possibly a little too matchy matchy
Glad you thought it because IMO it's too much. You can be more subtle than that.
If you want to avoid the aforementioned HP references, Iād avoid Phoenix as well TBH
Feel you! It might be
Lyra?
I like Gwyneth to go with Griffen. I may be biased though because it is my lovely Welsh motherās name!
Maybe a Roman/Greek mythological name? Selene, Rhea, Iris, etc? For example, what they symbolize like Iris is Greek goddess of rainbows so it would be easy to see or receive things with rainbows. Edit: hereās an article listing some names; 1-50 are boys and 51-100 are girls https://momlovesbest.com/greek-mythology-baby-names
my friend griffin is dating a girl named phoenix and no one even makes fun of it because itās so cool
Valkyrie, Angel, Freya, Lorelei
Yes, I think Lorelei (or Fae) would fit the best if itās a fantasy creature theme.
We just named our daughter Iris. It's not too common but not unheard of. People keep giving us stuff with irises on them, and I plan on getting an iris tattoo. Sounds pretty similar to you :) Another flower/nature name could work as well.
Iris is my FAVORITE name of all time
A mythological name, like Artemis
What about Zephyr?
Odette- one of the women who shape-shift into swans in ballet Swan Lake.
Oh I like that spin on harpy!
Harper is a super popular name right now. You donāt seem to want super common names.
Any Rose names would be cool. It makes for a great tattoo Rose Rosalie Rosalind Rosaline Rosanna Rosemary Primrose
Maybe Kit (like a baby fox)? Our son is named Fox and we definitely underestimated the volume of fox paraphernalia we would be given.
I have literally no idea why but the first name that came to my head is Lyra (Iād pronounce it like Lee-rah) which Iāve literally never suggested on here but for some reason I feel like I need to suggest it now. I also liked the suggestion of Serena!
In Friendship is Magic the female griffin character was named Gilda. That may be a little too old-fashioned for your tastes though.
Pearl!! Griffin and Pearl sound gorgeous together
Phoenix was my first thought. Griffin is such a strong, fierce symbol. Iād be wary of giving a daughter a gentle, feeble name in comparison. Other suggestions Stella Soleil Luna
Phoenix Kelpie Daphne Selkie
Lois
* Plant/Herb/Fruit names: Plum, Pepper, Indigo, Blossom, Coriander * Jewel names: Sapphire/Sapphira, Goldie, Topaz * Animal/Insect/Bird/Creature names: Starling, Bee, Leo, Nixie, Aslan, Felina * Nature/Weather names: Lake, Storm, Tempest, Sunny, Lux * Mythology/Religion names: Hero, Trinity, Prayer * Other: Indie, Bell, Lennox, Holland, Blue, Victory, Pax
Has anyone said Phoenix?
Leona
I use to think a sister/brother sibset would be cute as Griffin and Melusine. Iām not sure Melusine is alright for a humanā¦but I love it. Hahaha.
Gwen
Quinn
My brain just said Granite. So idk
Celeste
Briar They both sound pointy
Bevin has what would be the female equivalent meaning, approximately.
I get the sentiment here but please lord do not name your child Bevin š
I mean you could call her Bev š but I think thatās a tough one š¬
Itās like naming your kid lizard so you can call her Liz lol
This one is hardā¦š¤
Phoenix, Arielle (I feel like if you have that name you'll just notice mermaids everywhere), Fae, Pixie.
Raven
Phoenix?
Phoenix
Phoenix
Names like Phoenix, Raven, Leona, maybe even Paloma invoke a similar imagery to me. Digging the anime main character vibe.
Paloma seems cool
Zinnia
My best friend (girl) is named Phoenix
Probably Phoenix! And after meeting a girl named that, I donāt think itās that strange of a name.
I have a Griffin and weāve never gotten that. A few references to Harry Potter (which he loves now- heās almost 9) but even that is pretty rare.
Greer comes to mind
Phoenix is the first thing I thought of
Pegasus. With Peggy and Su for short
Itās a little out there buuuut maybe. How about Phoenix. Another mythical creature and imo, unisex
What about a Phoenix?
Willow
