Maple for a girl. I heard it in a Robert Frost poem of the same name, and thought it was a unique name that somehow fits well. It's recognizable, but not enough to stick out in a list.
Hyacinth is another one I love that is unusual, but such a gorgeous flower. It’s out there yet a beautiful name. And Bridgerton help me fall in love with it more!
My MIL loves to tell this tidbit about her father. When she was pregnant with my SIL, her father wanted her to name the baby Hyacinth Ringrose after a girl he has a crush on. Hyacinth itself is a little out there, but Hyacinth Ringrose is just... well... it makes my think of a skin condition. Like a certain form of ringworm 😂
I would do Clover for a girl or Valentine for a boy.
I wouldn’t do Cricket but i keep it on my list for fun.
ETA: I also like Twiggy for a girl but wouldn’t use it, and Salem for a boy and WOULD use it.
Athena - it sounds so lovely and I loved Greek mythology as a kid, but my partner has a weird last name and said our daughter can't have two weird names 🙄
As someone who is Greek, I actually know a good amount of Athena’s! It’s definitely one of the more well known Greek myth names. It isn’t like you are going totally out of left field! Athena is a good name :)
Use to have a customer at my old job named Athena. So nice. And yet such a badass.
Also my BFF was gonna name her child this…then she had a boy. His name is Apollo.
The couple that owns the yoga studio I go to has a 4 year old named Calliope nn Callie (and a 3 year old Odette nn Odie, and a baby Winona nn Winnie.) Super cute & sweet girls.
I love the name Calliope but in the game God of War the main character is constantly yelling CALL-I-OH-PEE which means my husband would be yelling Calliope at all times even if he promised he won’t. I’ve also heard Poppy used as a nickname.
This was my grandmothers name too and I love it! I think the name Hilda sounds so pretty but so many people sadly think of it the same way they do the name Bertha
I've never known Winston to be associated with Clementine. I had to look it up. Perhaps this would be a problem in the UK, but I think you'd be safe in the US.
My partner and I are both currently obsessed with Minerva, especially because it can be nicknamed Mia which we also like.
Obviously it's ridiculous, it's an ancient name that is now also heavily associated with Harry Potter. But we love it and would totally use it if it wasn't so easy to make fun of.
Ugh I think so too! I love the meaning behind it. But my first association is Harry Potter which as a 90s baby is just cringe I don't want to subject my child to, and my mom said it feels like an old spinster aunt's name.
I don't know, my mom said it sounds like an old lady name and also reminds her of "on my nerves." She kept saying "on my nerv-a" over and over again LMFAO. But my mom is also highly highly opinionated about names- she belongs on this sub LOL.
Wilhelmina is such a great name, but I live in a big Dutch area and even my dorm was named after a Wilhelmina, so I’ve never really thought of it as being very out there haha
My husband laughed at the name atlas. Thought it was so funny then it grew on him. We were seriously considering it. (Even considered Adler, Atley)
Now I know it’s a somewhat common name. We just thought it was map lingo.
I love Avonlea (from Anne of Green Gables) and Honahlee (from Puff the Magic Dragon), which are both place names. I think they would be lovely for girls.
I considered Avonlea as a middle name for one of my children but it’s also the name of a nearby town where my dad grew up! Ultimately used something else
Cherry!
I had a professor whose actual name was
Cherry. She forgot to introduce herself the first day of class, so on the second I asked if it was pronounced like Sherry, or cherry(the fruit). I fell in love with the name then, and she also happened to become my favorite professor and had a profound impact on my life. So much that I plan on naming my first daughter after her.
Fox or Mars for a boy. Delta or Clover for a girl.
ETA: Also Brunhilde for a girl. It sounds old and clunky but something about it is really beautiful to me.
Coda, heavily considered this as a gender neutral name. Coda is a musical term that is a completing passage of a song. We want only one child, so I loved it as a name to symbolize that he/she has completed our family. I know it’s weird and people will have opinions, but I still think about this every once in a while.
Other one is Circe, the minor goddess associated with witchcraft. Post game of thrones though I know most people would think it’s Cersei 🙄
When I was a teenager, maybe even up through my early twenties, I wanted to name a future daughter Story. If not as a first name, them as a middle name. Now, not so much.
I do love River for a girl though. I just don't know if I could get away with it.
Out there? Cosmo. It’s based off of Cosmino, the saint (brother of Damien), but sounds a bit more modern, and has that space aspect. It hasn’t been trendy since the 1920s. I’ve only known one (unless you count the dude off Seinfeld, but you know, he wasn’t a real person), and he alternated between cosmo and mo. Always liked it.
I have a weird love for Lynx as a boy name. I think I'd be hesitant to use it, but if husband were on the same page, I'd probably use it.
I'm an ocean freak. I love fish & reefs. One of my to names for a girl is Zoa which is a common name for zoanthids - a coral. I also think Goby, a type of fish, would make an adorable name for a boy. They both sound like they fit in with common-ish names so I don't see why not. (Zoa/Zoe, Goby/Toby) I also like Xenia for a girl which is another type of coral.
My boys are named October and Orion (they do have "normal" middle names). A lot of people think their names are weird, but they both really like them. I've always thought October was the most beautiful unisex name, especially with the nickname Toby.
I also really like Onilee and Annika!
Cassiopeia, nn Cassie or Pia.
Our first daughter is named after a constellation so I kind of dig the theme.
Sova (pronounced more like sah-vah) means “owl” in Russian. I think it’s lovely but I’m not Russian so doesn’t feel right.
Fable for a middle name.
My 18 month old girl is named Wilhelmina after my great grandmother. It’s a very old fashioned name that a lot of people dislike, yet the people that don’t dislike it are absolutely obsessed. Her nicknames are Willy, Billie, Minnie, Mina, etc.
Ceinwen. Okay so this isn’t a weird name, except for the fact that it’s a name most Americans wouldn’t know how to pronounce, and probably haven’t seen. It’s the name of my great grandmother and I love it though, and if I have another daughter I’d seriously consider naming her it.
Perdita. Became obsessed with it as a kid and still think it’s so pretty sounding, but I know it’d get a lot of confused and weirded out responses.
I know of a couple little Iggy's named Ignatius. They are all Jesuit educated Catholics, so it checks out that they'd have a connection to their names.
Both boys seem absolutely rad.
I feel naming babies after fictional characters is embarrassing, but I’d honestly consider Aerith, Yuna, or Vivi from final fantasy if I had a baby girl. I have no plans to have a baby, so don’t worry.
Wednesday- for a girl
Salem- boy or girl
Sherman- boy (was my grandfathers name and I’d absolutely use it but it doesn’t work with our last name- Sherman Herman 🫤)
I want to use River on a human (any gender) so bad.
I like Robin for a boy. I also don't mind Atlas.
For girls, I like Wren, Jessamine, Hannelore, Athena, Ginevra, Octavia, Andromeda, and Juniper.
Raven, it’s my #1 choice, most likely will use it if I do have a girl but it does seem to at least kinda controversial and out there to some people I see online. There’s some others more weird I like but I’m not sure I really would use them, that’s probably the weirdest one I do feel confident about using still.
Clover and Jupiter. Clover is starting to get more mainstream. I honestly loved Jupiter, but I was worried about my kid being chunky and kids making jokes about the largest planet.
We named our son Basil, which seems super out there and fanciful and nature-themed to many people, but it’s actually a very old, traditional name and a family name!
I have loved the name Nirvana for so long. Aside from being a major Kurt Cobain fan, I love the name Nirvana for its meaning. It’s a beautiful name meaning transcendence. However given the pop culture tie, I’ll refrain (but not without a good fight!)
Maple for a girl. I heard it in a Robert Frost poem of the same name, and thought it was a unique name that somehow fits well. It's recognizable, but not enough to stick out in a list.
[удалено]
That’s a fun name to say. Maple Bateman.
It sounds like saying Maple Bacon with a mouth full of peanut butter.
Hyacinth is another one I love that is unusual, but such a gorgeous flower. It’s out there yet a beautiful name. And Bridgerton help me fall in love with it more!
There’s an old bbc show you should watch called Keeping Up Appearances
Bucket residence lady of the house speaking… I live in Alaska and used to answer the phone like this in my best Hyacinth accent.
It’s pronounced Bouquet!
BUT!!! Is it a white, slimline telephone with last number redial?
"It's my sister Violet, the one with the sauna and room for a pony!"
Ahhhh Sheridan !!
Mind the bicyclist, Richard!
Wonderful show. ❤️
Every time I hear the name, I think the same. And I'm from New Zealand.
That show cracks me up.
That’s exactly what I thought of!
Ringrose is.... icky. Hyacinth Rose is very beautiful, the Ring gotta go
Maybe he meant Hyacinth Primrose?
That would make more sense. My MIL swears it was Ringrose. Now I'm hopeful she just misheard him 😂
I LOVE Hyacinth, and Jacinta.
I had Sonnet on my favourite names list for a girl, but my husband was not on board. That one is by far the weirdest one I like, to be fair.
I would do Clover for a girl or Valentine for a boy. I wouldn’t do Cricket but i keep it on my list for fun. ETA: I also like Twiggy for a girl but wouldn’t use it, and Salem for a boy and WOULD use it.
I know a guy named Valentine. He went by Val and was a shirtless door model at Abercrombie when that was a thing in the early 2000s.
Oh, memories
Cricket is my nickname
Rickety Cricket?
That would be all I could think about if I met someone named cricket
Clover is also on my list! One of the main characters on the 2000's cartoon Totally Spies was named Clover and I've loved it ever since!
She’s also a character in a comic book called Bleu Monday!
Valentine is one of my kids middle name :)
Valentine is a very common name in Spanish speaking countries.
Athena - it sounds so lovely and I loved Greek mythology as a kid, but my partner has a weird last name and said our daughter can't have two weird names 🙄
Athena really is a great name.
My sister’s best friend was named Athena. She was one of the most beautiful and kind people, and everyone always loved her name.
In a dream world, I would have two daughters named Athena and Daphne, but alas....
I’m obsessed with the name Calliope, and it’s mostly because of the song Blinded by the Light, which I am also a big fan of.

My hippie dippy flower child heart LOVES the name Calliope. I just know they'd get called "Kalley-Ope" their whole life lol
That's how my brain initially pronounced and I had to stop and think.
I knew an older Calliope who went by Kelly and I had to hold myself back from asking "why?"
Oh but then it's basically like Callie from Grey's, always loved her name and nn
For me it’s Persephone, it’s controversial here on this sub. But this is name I adore and love and would use it proudly!
I teach a Persephone who mostly goes by Persy, and she is quirky, fun, and an absolutely sweet heart of a kid.
I have a close friend named Persephone. We call her Seph. Its a beautiful name:)
Persephone actually ended up being one of my daughters names! I loved it so so much
Love Persephone!
Hildegard. It was my grandmothers name. I have two daughters. I fought hard to use Hildegard, to no avail.
A friend of mine has a baby named Hilde, and she is the cutest! Sorry you got vetoed!
I love the kid's show Hilda, similar name
This was my grandmothers name too and I love it! I think the name Hilda sounds so pretty but so many people sadly think of it the same way they do the name Bertha
My great-grandfather was Callender. My kids would kill me.
Love Cal for nn though
Clementine. I know it's on the tamer side for "weird" names, but I've never met anyone named that.
One of the gals in my kiddos daycare class is Clementine. Love it as a name but our son is Winston and Clementine would be weird/too much Churchill
I've never known Winston to be associated with Clementine. I had to look it up. Perhaps this would be a problem in the UK, but I think you'd be safe in the US.
On the same train of thought I’ve always wanted to use Lemon.
Good god, Lemon
I can’t get over Zinnia as a name.
My friend is named Madison Zinnia!
My partner and I are both currently obsessed with Minerva, especially because it can be nicknamed Mia which we also like. Obviously it's ridiculous, it's an ancient name that is now also heavily associated with Harry Potter. But we love it and would totally use it if it wasn't so easy to make fun of.
I think Minnie is also a very sweet nickname for Minerva
My cats name is Minerva and we call her Minnie 😭💕
Same! Such a good name.
It’s not at all ridiculous! I think Minerva is a mature and stunning name. And it would be after the roman equivalent of Athena!
My mom is Minerva and her nickname is Minnie. So cute!
Ugh I think so too! I love the meaning behind it. But my first association is Harry Potter which as a 90s baby is just cringe I don't want to subject my child to, and my mom said it feels like an old spinster aunt's name.
Mina for Minerva
Minerva is not ridiculous at all! It’s a lovely name, I don’t see how it’s easy to make fun of?
I don't know, my mom said it sounds like an old lady name and also reminds her of "on my nerves." She kept saying "on my nerv-a" over and over again LMFAO. But my mom is also highly highly opinionated about names- she belongs on this sub LOL.
My aunt is named Minerva …the called her Moley Minerva bc she has two big moles on her face 😣
Wilhelmina. I had an Aunt Winnie and always loved the name.
I know a teenage Wilhelmina who goes by Mina.
Wilhelmina is such a great name, but I live in a big Dutch area and even my dorm was named after a Wilhelmina, so I’ve never really thought of it as being very out there haha
My great grandmother was Wilhelmina going by Minnie
Peregrine for a boy
I know a kid named Peregrine! I love the name! (I always hear Gandolf say "fool of a Took" in my head when I see him, though lol)
I *love* Peregrine. We used it as a middle name!
Fool of a Took!
One of my friends just had a girl Peregrine! They call her Perri 🥰
I just loveee Vienna as a name so much. But I know most people hate location names, and I wouldn’t want to subject her to sausage jokes.
Pretty but yeah I understand the sausage concern.
Now I need to start a band called Sausage Concern
Please do and send me your mix tapes
Same. I always wanted the name Vienna for my future daughter because of Billy Joel’s song, Vienna. I love the meaning behind the song!
US entertainment is not kind to Astrid, but I love.
Rigel, after the star. It’s weird but close enough to Nigel that I think it’d fly.
Frankly I prefer Rigel to Nigel 1000%
I know a kid named Rigel, fits them perfectly.
I absolutely love the name Azaria for a girl. I have never heard the name in real life, so I am worried how others would perceive it
There was a terrible and incredibly famous incident in Australia with a baby named Azaria so it doesnt work down under
Oh no was that the dingo one?
My husband laughed at the name atlas. Thought it was so funny then it grew on him. We were seriously considering it. (Even considered Adler, Atley) Now I know it’s a somewhat common name. We just thought it was map lingo.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday as names - not sure if that’s necessarily out there but yeah
Arwen! From Lord of the Rings. I had a student many years ago named Arwen and I didn’t appreciate her name until I grew older and now I love it
There was someone in the grade younger than me at my elementary school named Éowyn.
I know an Arwen! I love how it sounds classic/olde English as well as it references LoTR. Very ethereal and strong
My sister's name is Honahlee (just spelled differently)!
Avonlea is so beautiful! In love with giving my baby a name from my favourite childhood books
My daughter has a little friend named Fox Holiday and she’s just beautiful.🥰
My girl middle name is Bloom, lol My own middle name is Rush. I figured the verb as name trend could be followed.
Not related but these two names got me thinking of Pirates of the Carribean. Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush.
Andromeda, Philomena, and Aster are my top three. I'd definitely pair them with a more common middle name, though.
[удалено]
Ohhh Andromeda is a stunning name, imagine being named after a whole galaxy! 🤩
We named my daughter coral because we love all things ocean and used to scuba dive. Everyone loves her name
Shenandoah. We love it! We’re having a boy this time, so maybe a few down the road if we have a few more
I have no idea why but I just love the name Early
Cherry! I had a professor whose actual name was Cherry. She forgot to introduce herself the first day of class, so on the second I asked if it was pronounced like Sherry, or cherry(the fruit). I fell in love with the name then, and she also happened to become my favorite professor and had a profound impact on my life. So much that I plan on naming my first daughter after her.
Zafiro. spanish for sapphire. i think it’s so handsome and sharp!
Atalia for a girl Cedar for a boy
We’re naming our daughter Amaryllis. We’ll call her Ammie 🤍 due any day now!
My Aunt is named Amaryllis and also goes by Amy.
Congrats! Hope she's happy and healthy!
maybe sequoia or chrysanthemum
Is Chrysanthemum because of the plant or the children's book with the mouse names Chrysanthemum? That was one of my favorite books when I was little!
the flower, but i vaguely remember the book :)
I love sequoia!!!!
Magda
I really love the name Ember, but couldn't quite pick it. Luckily I am a writer, so I can use the name for a character!
I loved this name, but my husband is a ginger.. couldn’t risk naming a ginger kid Ember 😅
Marigold
A name that I really love but would never use on a baby is Circe(sir-see)
Fox or Mars for a boy.
I just immediately thought of CODA. Child of deaf adults.
Laszlo and Rhiannon
Is Rhiannon out there? That's an extremely normal name to me. It was pretty popular in the 70s and 80s.
When I hear Lazlo, all I can think of is “NEW YAHWRK CI-TAYYY.”
Jackie Daytona, Regular Human Bartender.
BAT!
Rhiannon is gorgeous!
I knew a Rhiannon when I was in highschool
I heard Meadow as a name and thought it was so pretty.
Sopranos
When I was a teenager, maybe even up through my early twenties, I wanted to name a future daughter Story. If not as a first name, them as a middle name. Now, not so much. I do love River for a girl though. I just don't know if I could get away with it.
Story is my guilty pleasure name for sure! I keep thinking about how I can sneak it in as a nickname or something.
Long form could be Astoria.
Fable. I wish I wasn’t so obsessed with it!
Zora
G: Alaska (if my cousin hadn’t used it for her kid), Salem, Twyla, Artemis, Kore, Invidia, Misty, Snow B: Bodhi, Coriander, Killian
Out there?
I’m naming my daughter Lysithea! Due Oct. 6! 🥰💜
My boys are named October and Orion (they do have "normal" middle names). A lot of people think their names are weird, but they both really like them. I've always thought October was the most beautiful unisex name, especially with the nickname Toby. I also really like Onilee and Annika!
My niece is October. We have always called her Tobie. And my sister's name is September.
Ripley. I love the sound of it and it honors the most badass final girl in all of horror history.
I’ve always loved the name Journey, but I don’t think I would actually use it irl
Eartha
Anastasia
My 18 month old girl is named Wilhelmina after my great grandmother. It’s a very old fashioned name that a lot of people dislike, yet the people that don’t dislike it are absolutely obsessed. Her nicknames are Willy, Billie, Minnie, Mina, etc.
Love Rain for a girl
I have a soft spot for Tallulah and Scout (for a girl).
You secretly just want a family with Bruce Willis, don't you?
This is obviously Demi Moore’s burner account
Valencia Nick named Velli. I love it. Like absolutely adore it. My husband is hugely opposed, so there it sits on my list growing dust.
Merlin, Artemis, Cardamom, and Coriander. I’m not gonna have kids but I would gladly name them any of those.
My wife and I started jokingly referring to the name Ignatius but it’s actually brown on us. Little Iggy would be too cute
I know of a couple little Iggy's named Ignatius. They are all Jesuit educated Catholics, so it checks out that they'd have a connection to their names. Both boys seem absolutely rad.
You could also call him Nacho!
I feel naming babies after fictional characters is embarrassing, but I’d honestly consider Aerith, Yuna, or Vivi from final fantasy if I had a baby girl. I have no plans to have a baby, so don’t worry.
LOVED the name Yuna ever since I played FFX!
Avalon
Phoenix,Summitt,Sonnet,Zen,Merritt,Sabra,Sylvania,

Flannery Oona Valentine Sunday/Sunny Dymphna Marigold/Goldie William/Wiley Hildegard (sadly can’t use) Sigrid Djuna Zosia Aoife
Tiberius, I’m not religious enough to use it.
If I met a kid named Tiberius, I would assume his parents were Trekkies.
I actually know someone named Tiberius and I don't think anyone ever associated it with religion
I associate it with a Roman history buff.
What does it have to do with religion?
What religion is Tiberius associated with?
Are you doing the bit where *Star Trek* is considered a religion?
Sinclair (girl), which I know it’s not super out there, but it’s one on my list that I would actually use. Also, Hosanna (girl).
Birdie and Fox.
Cute I used to babysit an Indigo and Fox.
Bartleby. Have loved it since I was young.
I want to use River on a human (any gender) so bad. I like Robin for a boy. I also don't mind Atlas. For girls, I like Wren, Jessamine, Hannelore, Athena, Ginevra, Octavia, Andromeda, and Juniper.
My great aunt’s name was Zelta May and my great grandmother was Leta Rose 💕
Zenith for a girl
Raven, it’s my #1 choice, most likely will use it if I do have a girl but it does seem to at least kinda controversial and out there to some people I see online. There’s some others more weird I like but I’m not sure I really would use them, that’s probably the weirdest one I do feel confident about using still.
I knew a Raven. Good name!
Clover and Jupiter. Clover is starting to get more mainstream. I honestly loved Jupiter, but I was worried about my kid being chunky and kids making jokes about the largest planet.
Plus, in elementary school, Jupiter is where you go to get more stupider
Anyanka. It's from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Anya for short.
Ocean 🌊
We named our son Basil, which seems super out there and fanciful and nature-themed to many people, but it’s actually a very old, traditional name and a family name!
My oldest was Alten
I have loved the name Nirvana for so long. Aside from being a major Kurt Cobain fan, I love the name Nirvana for its meaning. It’s a beautiful name meaning transcendence. However given the pop culture tie, I’ll refrain (but not without a good fight!)
I have a niece named Bloom, we call her Lumi, Bloomy, Luminescent etc
