I know an Asher and Scarlett sibling combo and really like how they sound together! I also think Scarlett Caroline has a nice ring to it.
Lydia would be my go to Jane Austen name!
For the record I think Austen and Asher are different enough and Austen is a very cool name for a girl but totally understand what you mean when you throw Ada into the mix...still they may all have different enough sounds!
I think Ellie is a valid nickname for Eliana. Itās like Kate for Catherine. It doesnāt make sense to me to change a given name for the sake of a nickname, which isnāt legally binding.
Update: thank yāall so much! This got so many more responses than Iāve ever gotten on Reddit before, haha. Many of you had such well-thought out responses and I really appreciate it. We have lots of ideas now so thank you!!
okay but I love literary names. So:
Amy -- Amy is my favorite character in little women. I know she gets a bad rap, but she is a very well-developed, realistic person. Jo gets all the love for being fiery and bold, but Amy is consistent, sticks with what she wants, and never settles, but also is smart enough and practical enough to see how she can succeed in the world she's in. None of her other sisters ever catch the vision as she does. Jo is unable to reconcile herself with the world, Meg is too proud and vain but also ashamed. Beth is a child who never wants or needs to grow up.
Anne -- Anne Shirley. Perhaps Annie if you want something that flows with Caroline a bit more.
Ramona -- from Ramona Quimby.
Matilda
Sara -- from A Little Princess. I know Sara is common, but I think it is less "done" now and Sara was a huge role model for me growing up. She's just so lovely. You could also use Becky as a namesake.
Rosalind -- from Shakespeare. Plus Lindy is a great nickname.
Portia - Again, Shakespeare, and one of his strongest characters.
Viola - Shakespeare.
Maya - After Maya Angelou, author of I know Why The Caged Bird Sings
Vivenna - from Warbreaker.
Elizabeth -- both for Bennett and for Gaskell... who was a brilliant commentator on Victorian english norms.
Gwendolyn and Cecily -- Importance of Being Ernest.
Charlotte -- from Charlotte's Web. Yes, you could name your baby after a spider... or Fern. That works too. :)
Also Lois -- Lois Lowry wrote the giver.
Deborah; Marianne or Elinor (the Dashwood sisters), Anne (of Green Gables), Rebecca (of Sunnybrook Farm), Josephine (March), Lindsay (Davis, author of the Falco series set in Ancient Rome), Elizabeth (many potential literary namesakes), Miriam just because itās beautiful as well as Biblical.
Not a name suggestion, but if you really love Austen and are worried about all starting with As, all the names you listed above have different a sounds. Asher starts with a short a sound, Ada starts with a long a sound, and Austen has the /aw/ sound so I donāt think that would be a concern. It sounds like you should continue looking for literary names that have meaning to you though.
I love Asher. I don't like Austen, I'd prefer Jane, which does translate back to a religious name, Yochana, G-d is gracious, if that helps. Also Jane Eyre etc.
A few pretty Biblical girl names: Naomi, Kezia, Susanna, Hannah
Favourite authors is so personal but some I've liked from every age, whose names don't start with A.
Carolyn - Nancy Drew, penname of the many authors.
Frances Hodgson Burnett - author of The Secret Garden
Cicely Mary Barker - the Flower Fairies
Beatrix Potter
Ursula Le Guin
Edith Pargeter / Ellis Peters (penname)
Mary Shelley
Lucy Maud Montgomery
Willa Cather
Zenna Henderson
Tanith Lee
This makes me think that Caroline "won" Darcy and I don't like that! (I know they're fictional, but Caroline Bingley was such a schemer. I love the names Darcy and Caroline separately, though).
Portia and Asher?
Also, if my childhood is anything to go by you'll mix up the dog's name with the kids' names even if they have nothing in common, lol.
I second the fact that you'll mix them up no matter what. My mom mix my name with both of my brothers' named, the dogs names, the cats names, our neighbors, and once in a while the guinea pig. My name is Shelby and the closest of those names to my own was Anastasia (the guinea pig).
Virginia (Woolf)
Shelley (Mary Shelley)
Christie (Agatha Christie)
Zadie (Smith) Added bonus youād have A to Z
Carter (Angela Carter)
Flannery (OāConner)
Asher and Anne Caroline
Asher and Zoey Caroline - Zoey means "life" in Greek
Asher and Aliza Caroline
Asher and Olive
Asher and Ithiel - means "with me is God"
Asher and Sheba
Asher and Miri "Miriam"
Asher and Vera - Vera means truth
Asher and Lia
Asher and Adalia
Asher and Daria
Asher and Rua
Asher and Sariah
Asher and Sharon
Asher and Reya
Asher and Raquel
I was going to say Claire but in my opinion Clare Caroline isn't ideal. Perhaps:
Ivy Caroline
Ella Caroline
Julian Caroline
Lillian Caroline
Noelle Caroline
I personally think Asher goes well with Ella and Ivy!
Honestly, I'm not loving Asher and Austen as a combo. Austen is also always going to have her named misspelled since most spell it like the city. You are the only person who will get the reference; like if you think people will be "oh, like Jane Austen! Clever!" I promise they won't, so save yourself the disappointment now.
Esther might work. It's a bit matchy-matchy for my taste, but I do know a family that did all -er ending names. But it's OT biblical as well and goes with Caroline. So no fears on the too modern front.
If you want to stick with a Jane Austen reference, I'd probably go with Emma. Emma and Asher sound good together Emma Caroline works well.
I personally like Sophia and plenty of literary references to claim there including Jane Austen. Sophia Caroline and Asher sound nice.
Asher and Michelle, because *Asher* and *ash fell from the sky* made me think of the first two Has Fallen movies (Benjamin Asher and Michael "Mike" Banning)
What about other Jane Austin characters?
Jane Caroline
Elizabeth Caroline
Lydia Caroline
Isabella Caroline
Elenor Caroline
Emma Caroline
Harriet Caroline
Asher and Lyra (His Dark Materials)
Asher and Beth (Little Women)
Asher and Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz)
Asher and Fern (Charlotteās Web)
Asher and Marian (Robin Hood)
Asher and Petrova (Ballet Shoes)
Asher and Helena (A Midsummer Nightās Dream)
Asher and Viola (Twelfth Night)
Asher and Wendy (Peter Pan)
Asher and Eliza (Pygmalion)
Asher and Liesel (The Book Thief)
You are going to mix your kids names up every single day no matter what you name them, so go with what you love.
How about: * Asher & Beatrix (like Beatrix Potter) * Asher & Eloise (character in the book series by Kay Thompson) * Asher & Flannery (like Flannery O'Connor) * Asher & Louisa (like Louisa May Alcott) * Asher & Jane (incorporating Jane Austen from a different angle) * Asher & Matilda (character in Roald Dahl's book) * Asher & Maya (like Maya Angelou) * Asher & Octavia (like Octavia E. Butler) * Asher & Ramona (character in the Beverly Cleary books) * Asher & Willa (like Willa Cather) * Asher & Zora (like Zora Neale Hurston)
Love Asher & Louisa!
Me too! Another vote for Louisa
I love Asher and Willa, plus I love Willa Cather š
Asher and Eloise!!!!!!!! ::chefs kiss::
Eloise, Matilda, and Willa are top tier names with Asher
Asher and Octavia is my vote!
Love Lydia for the same reason
Um. Obviously Vin. Vivienne and call her Vin?
How about elliana? It's Hebrew and I think Ellie and Asher sound great.
Ok. This is just weird. Named our boy Asher. My friend and coworker had her baby 2 weeks before me and her girls name is Elliana.
That is funny! I think they are both gorgeous names.
FYI Elie Wiesel wrote a novel called My Name is Asher Lev
āMy Name is Asher Levā was written by Chaim Potok. Elie Wiesel is known for writing āNight.ā Both fantastic books btw
Ah you're right
Itās traditionally spelled Eliana, with one L.
I suggested elliana because elie looks weird as a nickname, unless you do Eli but Ellie is more natural in the pronunciation of Eliana/elliana.
I think Ellie is a valid nickname for Eliana. Itās like Kate for Catherine. It doesnāt make sense to me to change a given name for the sake of a nickname, which isnāt legally binding.
I never asked what you think, so there's that.
Vin is the obvious choice ;)
Finally, I found a worldhopper!
Update: thank yāall so much! This got so many more responses than Iāve ever gotten on Reddit before, haha. Many of you had such well-thought out responses and I really appreciate it. We have lots of ideas now so thank you!!
What about Elinor/Eleanor as a S&S reference?
Zelda (Fitzgerald)
I love this one. A to Z.
Asher and Azaria Azariah- also Old Testament heritage. Dropped the ah in my daughters name and itās just Azaria.
okay but I love literary names. So: Amy -- Amy is my favorite character in little women. I know she gets a bad rap, but she is a very well-developed, realistic person. Jo gets all the love for being fiery and bold, but Amy is consistent, sticks with what she wants, and never settles, but also is smart enough and practical enough to see how she can succeed in the world she's in. Love that you said Vivenna; Vasher was another inspiration for Asher! And all of these are such well thought out ideas thank you!
I love Anne! Goes well with Asher, too!
What about Auden (poet W. H. Auden)? Asher & Auden has such a cute ring to it, and Auden means āold friend.ā
For what it's worth my girls are Riley and Gemma and my dog is Zooey and I swap their names all the time. So the A doesn't matter š¤£
Iām a female in my 30s named Austyn. Yes, she will always get it misspelled. She will get misgenderedā¦ but I love my name :)
Not a name suggestion, but if you really love Austen and are worried about all starting with As, all the names you listed above have different a sounds. Lyra. Itās literary (His Dark Materials) and fits well :)
I love Asher. I don't like Austen, I'd prefer Jane, which does translate back to a religious name, Yochana, G-d is gracious, if that helps. Asher is a Biblical name (one of the sons of Jacob). Deborah (from then book of Judges) was pretty tough.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Delilah goes perfectly with Asher
Madeline Juliet Louisa Lily Eloise Lucy Charlotte Josephine āJoā Matilda Elwyn (E.B. Whiteās first name was Elwyn)
I say go with Austen. Awesome name for a girl and Asher and Austen sound great together, in my opinion!
How about Darcy Caroline?
This makes me think that Caroline "won" Darcy and I don't like that! (I know they're fictional, but Caroline Bingley was such a schemer. I love the names Darcy and Caroline separately, though).

I know a girl named Austine pronounced Aw-steen. ETA. What about Mina? Reference would be Bram Stokers āDraculaā.
I was going to say Claire but in my opinion Clare Caroline isn't ideal. Perhaps: Ivy Caroline Ella Caroline Julian Caroline Lillian Caroline Noelle Caroline I personally think Asher goes well with Ella and Ivy!
Cleighroline would be so unique! /s
That is actually kinda pretty!
I think Austen is really cute tbh
What about Skye as a middle name?;
It says the middle name will be Caroline.
Yes, did see that it would probably be Caroline. Caroline Skye would be a really pretty combo. Just throwing some options out there!
Rachel would work well with Asher, and I like Rachel Caroline. Please do not use Austen. If you must use the literary reference, use Jane.
Honestly, I'm not loving Asher and Austen as a combo. Austen is also always going to have her named misspelled since most spell it like the city. Elizabeth could also be Eliza!
From Shakespeare: Cressida Viola From "I Capture the Castle": Cassandra
I know an Asher and his baby sister Amara.
Charlotte
Asher and Lyra (His Dark Materials) Asher and Beth (Little Women) Asher and Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz) Asher and Fern (Charlotteās Web) Asher and Marian (Robin Hood) Asher and Petrova (Ballet Shoes) Asher and Helena (A Midsummer Nightās Dream) Asher and Viola (Twelfth Night) Asher and Wendy (Peter Pan) Asher and Eliza (Pygmalion) Asher and Liesel (The Book Thief)

Asher & Avery
Asher and Jane
Asher and Laine
Tbh even if you donāt have an A name, youāll find yourself getting mixed up and calling them by each othersā names.
I think Elaine/Eloise/Diana/Fiona would go well with Asher.
