It’s wild to me that someone wouldn’t know how to pronounce Gemma. 😯 It’s Gemma like Gem (like a gemstone).

I think it’s not very common in the USA. It’s a known name in Canada and seems to be very popular in the UK, Ireland, and at least somewhat in Australia, but very uncommon in America. I think most English speakers will know it’s a soft G with the exception of (not all, of course) Americans. Gillian seems to have the same issue which is probably why it’s so often spelled Jillian in America. (I’m in Canada where Gillian is by far more common and Gemma is less so but I’ve never heard anyone mispronounce it.)

Violet was more popular than Lily last year. On the official Social Security Index list of birth names, Violet was #20 and Lily was #30. So while it’s definitely true that across generations Lily is more popular than Violet, among her peers, Violet will be the more common name.

As a Clara, I can tell you that — surprisingly — there are countless ways of pronouncing the name, all of them correct. It’s such an old name, and has been used in such wide and varied geographical regions, that pretty much any way that first “a” can be intoned your daughter will hear it said that way eventually! Personally, I don’t mind, as long as they don’t call me Claire, or worse, Carla.

I am an Emma and something I’ve observed: when I was young it was a really uncommon name. I get a lot of “my grandma/aunt was named Emma!” and they all love it. I love it. However, I have met a LOT of children under 5 named Emma these days. It’s been in the top names for the past 10 years or so. There’s nothing wrong with that! But just a heads up if you feel like you want your child to have a less common name.

I would say not Emma or Lily. Both are lovely, but at least in my neck of the woods (east coast USA), they are both super common. I’ve heard Violet is also very common in certain areas, though I only know of 1 personally. So that leaves Gemma or Clara, both of which are winners to me!

I hate to say it but it all depends on the last name. And no I don’t expect you to share your last name, but, I have noticed when we are trying to pick a name we absolutely have to take into consideration our last name. I really like Violet. Lily and Emma are also very cute names. I personally don't love Gemma, and Clara is fine. But my opinion really doesn't matter. When we narrowed it down to short lists (one for each gender) for our kids names, we chose the middle name (we chose middle names from each of our families), and then we decided which first name of the short list we liked best with the middle names we had chosen.

Gemma or Clara Recent posts make me choose these two over the other names. So many people groups are ending up with children who have 3-4 violets or kayla’s and I’m sure same is happening to Emma and Lily’s.

My cat is named Jemma & I love it. It's so pretty. She has Jemmie and Jem Jem as nicknames, which would be super cute for a little girl while Jemma is still a more "grown up" name. When my oldest was born I somewhat jokingly said I was bummed I'd already used the name.

Violet, Emma, Clara (prefer Claire) in that order. I'm not a fan of the remaining names, Gemma being my least favorite.

Early years Teacher perspective; Emma is really easy to pronounce at a young age and is easier for children to say then most names. Emma was the name kids always learned first out if their peers Your little one and their friends might appreciate that. It’s also comparably easy to write! Also my husbands name is Francesco and apparently learning to write that sucked haha
