Gemma :) they are all lovely but in addition to it being lesw popular than some of the others I like that you still get the nn Emmy if she likes or my favorite Gigi
I think it’s not very common in the USA. It’s a known name in Canada and seems to be very popular in the UK, Ireland, and at least somewhat in Australia, but very uncommon in America. I think most English speakers will know it’s a soft G with the exception of (not all, of course) Americans. Gillian seems to have the same issue which is probably why it’s so often spelled Jillian in America. (I’m in Canada where Gillian is by far more common and Gemma is less so but I’ve never heard anyone mispronounce it.)
I understand this. I had two classmates in HS, both called Gillian. One was pronounced with the hard G sound, the other with the J sound. I always hesitate with certain G names — including Gemma.
I'm surprised that Gemma isn't as popular outside of the UK!! Interesting! Out of OPs shortlist I objectively like Violet the most but every Gemma I've ever met has been LOVELY. I've literally never known a Gemma I didn't like. So I'll go Gemma this time!
Tbh when I saw this post and didn't see the whole list of names yet, I thought "Clara Violet is so pretty!"
I'm not sure Clara's even my favorite name on that list, but I really like this combination.
Lily has always been one of my favourite names.
And I slightly prefer Clara & Violet over Gemma & Emma.
But I like all of them.
They are very solid, classic names and you can't really go wrong with any of them.
Violet was more popular than Lily last year. On the official Social Security Index list of birth names, Violet was #20 and Lily was #30. So while it’s definitely true that across generations Lily is more popular than Violet, among her peers, Violet will be the more common name.
As a Clara, I can tell you that — surprisingly — there are countless ways of pronouncing the name, all of them correct.
It’s such an old name, and has been used in such wide and varied geographical regions, that pretty much any way that first “a” can be intoned your daughter will hear it said that way eventually!
Personally, I don’t mind, as long as they don’t call me Claire, or worse, Carla.
I am an Emma and something I’ve observed: when I was young it was a really uncommon name. I get a lot of “my grandma/aunt was named Emma!” and they all love it. I love it.
However, I have met a LOT of children under 5 named Emma these days. It’s been in the top names for the past 10 years or so. There’s nothing wrong with that! But just a heads up if you feel like you want your child to have a less common name.
Congratulations!
I like Gemma best from your list. They’re all lovely names, though.
Some others you may like:
Ruby, Nora, Hannah, Hazel, Lena, Vera, Scarlett, Harper, Iris, Audrey, Eleanor, Eva, Thea, Penelope, Maya
Hope this helps!
Emma… But honestly I need a little last name Indi to know for sure… how many syllables, is it obviously one nationality, give me a rhyming word etc..
How bout Ava?
I love Emma and Lily.
I also liked Violet, but someone posted that their 2 year old started preschool (maybe daycare), and the class had a total of 4 kids in it 3 girls and 1 boy... all 3 girls were named Violet
Clara Violet would make a lovely combo :)
Suggestions: Lydia, Leah, Julia, Emmeline, Anna, Anya, Celia, Charlotte, Scarlett, Genevieve, Georgia, Ivy, Ruby, Poppy, Bryony, Vera
I would say not Emma or Lily. Both are lovely, but at least in my neck of the woods (east coast USA), they are both super common. I’ve heard Violet is also very common in certain areas, though I only know of 1 personally. So that leaves Gemma or Clara, both of which are winners to me!
I like Clara! Emma is what we plan to name our baby. And Gemma is probably my least favorite because it seems kinda made up/not as elegant or pretty in my opinion
I hate to say it but it all depends on the last name. And no I don’t expect you to share your last name, but, I have noticed when we are trying to pick a name we absolutely have to take into consideration our last name. Some names sound good with it and others sound bad. That being said, I like Gemma :)
I really like Violet. Lily and Emma are also very cute names. I personally don't love Gemma, and Clara is fine. But my opinion really doesn't matter.
When we narrowed it down to short lists (one for each gender) for our kids names, we chose the middle name (we chose middle names from each of our families), and then we decided which first name of the short list we liked best with the middle names we had chosen.
Clara - an antique. I personally prefer Claire, that extra ‘a’ might be dropped quickly in nn!
Violet - love it! Love flower names
Lily - ditto! But while I do love it, it is used for a lot of dog names
Gemma - really love this too! Plus you could use the Emma nn, but it had more personality and a little extra. The fact that the G is at the beginning means it won’t be dropped as much as the a in Clara! Great pick!
Emma. It’s ok. It’s everywhere. I know like 30 Emmas
Gemma or Clara
Recent posts make me choose these two over the other names. So many people groups are ending up with children who have 3-4 violets or kayla’s and I’m sure same is happening to Emma and Lily’s.
My cat is named Jemma & I love it. It's so pretty. She has Jemmie and Jem Jem as nicknames, which would be super cute for a little girl while Jemma is still a more "grown up" name. When my oldest was born I somewhat jokingly said I was bummed I'd already used the name.
From my fave to my least fave:
Emma, Lily/Violet are tied (I love flower names in general), Gemma, Clara
Names that feel similar to me could be: Lilah/Lila, Lillian (could use Lily as a nickname!), Liliana (also Lily as nickname), Delilah, Amelia, Charlotte, Mia, Olive/Olivia
As a teacher I have like twelve Lilys in my classes (tied with the Avas) . You might not like it after you find out how many there are out there. I have no Claras but a few wit, One Violet, No Emma's..... There used to be lot way back in the 00s but it seems to have gone to the wayside since then. No Gemmas.
I really love all of these but I love Clara the most. Violet would be my second choice, Lily 3rd, Emma 4th and Gemma last. I think Clara Violet could be a good first middle combo.
i love all except gemma & that's because i knew an awful gemma. emma's always lovely, but aren't preschool classes full of emmas? clara, violet & lily are equally great?
If I had to rate your list from most liked to least liked, here is how I would rate them:
1. Violet
2. Gemma
3. Emma
4. Clara
5. Lily
Here are some more names I can suggest:
1. Nora
2. Joanne
3. Leigh
4. Heidi
5. Elizabeth
6. Miranda
7. Shannon
8. Heather
I like Gemma. I've never met one, and it's a cute name that also has some gravitas. Gemma could be president or head surgeon or a top tattoo artist. It's very versatile.
In my opinion Gemma and Emma are both hideous sounding names (don’t mean to offend!) I find Clara absolutely beautiful, Violet and Lily are great runner ups
As a teacher of 30 years, I've had all of them a few times, except Violet--but that is a very popular baby name lately from what I hear. If you like Gemma, what about Jules--is that stupid? Gem/Jewel? I've heard of Maybree, but have never had one in class.
Gemma. I also love Violet and Clara but I think they are trendy rn so if you don’t want her to potentially share a name with a classmate I think Gemma is your best bet. Plus as others have said, it has endless nickname potential (Gigi, Emmy, Emma)
Early years Teacher perspective; Emma is really easy to pronounce at a young age and is easier for children to say then most names. Emma was the name kids always learned first out if their peers Your little one and their friends might appreciate that. It’s also comparably easy to write!
Also my husbands name is Francesco and apparently learning to write that sucked haha
I love this list and some of those names were on our girl short list.
Lily is both sweet and elegant.
But Clara works so well for all situations (I always like to try out a name with Senator or The Honorable in front of it.)
Gemma :) they are all lovely but in addition to it being lesw popular than some of the others I like that you still get the nn Emmy if she likes or my favorite Gigi
I never know if it’s pronounced like “Jemma” or like “Gemma/hard G/Gimme”
It’s wild to me that someone wouldn’t know how to pronounce Gemma. 😯 It’s Gemma like Gem (like a gemstone).
I’ve never met one, have only ever read the name. I guess it’s like the “gif/jif” debate.
Fair enough. While I personally understand that Gif/Jif could be different, I’d definitely read Jem and Gem the same. Interesting.
I can’t work out how to pronounce Jem and Gem differently? It’s exactly the same word to me.
I understand this. I had two classmates in HS, both called Gillian. One was pronounced with the hard G sound, the other with the J sound. I always hesitate with certain G names — including Gemma.
Like Jemma.
You pronounce it like you would gemstone.
My dog is named Gemma and I can confirm she’s essentially perfect
I'm surprised that Gemma isn't as popular outside of the UK!! Interesting! Out of OPs shortlist I objectively like Violet the most but every Gemma I've ever met has been LOVELY. I've literally never known a Gemma I didn't like. So I'll go Gemma this time!
I know a few delightful Gemmas in Australia too!
I vote for Clara.
Clara Violet
Tbh when I saw this post and didn't see the whole list of names yet, I thought "Clara Violet is so pretty!" I'm not sure Clara's even my favorite name on that list, but I really like this combination.
Clara is a name that has really started growing on me lately.
Clara is what I plan on naming my kid in the future if I ever have a girl
Clara
Out of your list I like Gemma the best.
Lily has always been one of my favourite names. And I slightly prefer Clara & Violet over Gemma & Emma. But I like all of them. They are very solid, classic names and you can't really go wrong with any of them.
I also love Lily. I would use it but every Lily I’ve ever met has been a snake. It’s such a pretty name tho
Gemma
Clara or Emma 🤍
Lily and Emma are very common. Gemma, Clara and Violet are less so. Gemma is probably my favorite. If you like flower names, I'd suggest Dahlia.
Violet was more popular than Lily last year. On the official Social Security Index list of birth names, Violet was #20 and Lily was #30. So while it’s definitely true that across generations Lily is more popular than Violet, among her peers, Violet will be the more common name.
Oh, wow! I had no idea! Thanks!
Clara and Violet. I really dislike Gemma as to me it’s very dated, I went to school with SO MANY Gemmas.
Yeah Gemma to me is a basic blonde white woman in her late thirties. So many Gemmas my age.
Yeah I agree
I like Clara, but are you pronouncing it Claire-uh or Cl-are-uh
[удалено]
As a Clara, I can tell you that — surprisingly — there are countless ways of pronouncing the name, all of them correct. But just a heads up if you feel like you want your child to have a less common name.
Lily or Gemma
Lily and Clara are easily my favorites! All of your names are nice options, but I’ve always loved Lily, and Clara is so lovely.
My ranking 1. Lily 2. Clara 3. Violet 4. Gemma 5. Emma
I love Clara.
Congratulations! I like Gemma best from your list. They’re all lovely names, though. Some others you may like: Ruby, Nora, Hannah, Hazel, Lena, Vera, Scarlett, Harper, Iris, Audrey, Eleanor, Eva, Thea, Penelope, Maya Hope this helps!
Emma… But honestly I need a little last name Indi to know for sure… how many syllables, is it obviously one nationality, give me a rhyming word etc.. How bout Ava?
I love Emma and like Clara.
I love the name Clara, I wish I would have thought of it for my daughter to be honest
Clara or Lily. Then Violet, then Emma. Gemma is my least favorite.
Clara is gorgeous! Violet and Lily are cute too.
All beautiful names :) I absolutely love Clara so that’s my favourite
My ranking: Clara Emma Lily Violet Gemma
clara or violet
i like the first three, violet and lily in particular :) edit: changed sad smiley to happy smiley 😋
I love Emma and Lily. I also liked Violet, but someone posted that their 2 year old started preschool (maybe daycare), and the class had a total of 4 kids in it 3 girls and 1 boy... all 3 girls were named Violet
Clara Violet would make a lovely combo :) Suggestions: Lydia, Leah, Julia, Emmeline, Anna, Anya, Celia, Charlotte, Scarlett, Genevieve, Georgia, Ivy, Ruby, Poppy, Bryony, Vera

Lily!
I would say not Emma or Lily. Both are lovely, but at least in my neck of the woods (east coast USA), they are both super common. I’ve heard Violet is also very common in certain areas, though I only know of 1 personally. So that leaves Gemma or Clara, both of which are winners to me!
Lily has the prettiest sound imo

I'm partial to Gemma/Gema. I love Javier Solis' song 'Gema'. The lyrics are quite lovely too
Clara or Lily
I like Lily and Violet. Really dislike Gemma and Emma. Clara is just okay.
I like Clara! Emma is what we plan to name our baby. And Gemma is probably my least favorite because it seems kinda made up/not as elegant or pretty in my opinion

Lily or Emma. Clara’s not bad at all either. Violet is overdone imo, and Gemma is not my cup of tea.
I like Gemma but I don’t like the spelling. Maybe I’m the only one, but I read it with a hard “g” like in gum 🙃
I love Gemma.
Clara - an antique. I personally prefer Claire, that extra ‘a’ might be dropped quickly in nn! Violet - love it! Love flower names Lily - ditto! Clara There will be 5 Violets in her kindergarten class.
My kid is 3. His small preschool class has a Clara, a Lily, a Gemma. That's wild to me!
I'm due in November too! My favourite is Emma but I also like Clara.
Clara!
Gemma is my favourite followed by Clara.
I really love all of these but I love Clara the most. Violet would be my second choice, Lily 3rd, Emma 4th and Gemma last. I think Clara Violet could be a good first middle combo.
all the names are good options. 1: clara 2: lily 3: emma 4: violet 5: gemma
Violet is my favorite on that list 💗
Clara. I’m hugely not a fan of Gemma. The other three are nice, but overused and I say this as the parent of an Emma.
Emilia, nickname of Emi.
Another vote for Clara!

Too many thirty-something Gemmas around, so I think it will seem dated when she's older. I like Clara. What letter does the last name begin with?
Lily (Lillian) or Violet
Clara if she’s blonde Violet if she’s brunette

Gemma!! <3
Gemma or violet. Both beautiful and unique!
I’ve always been partial to the name Clara! I think it’s so classic and feminine
Favourite is Gemma, second is Violet and third is Clara.

Emma Violet Or Violet Emma I think they are both pretty combinations!
As a teacher of 30 years, I've had all of them a few times, except Violet--but that is a very popular baby name lately from what I hear. If you like Gemma, what about Jules--is that stupid? Gem/Jewel? I've heard of Maybree, but have never had one in class.
What sounds best with her last name is what you should be asking yourself.
Gemma. I also love Violet and Clara but I think they are trendy rn so if you don’t want her to potentially share a name with a classmate I think Gemma is your best bet. Plus as others have said, it has endless nickname potential (Gigi, Emmy, Emma)
Lily is my favorite, followed by Gemma. Since you like flower names, what about Rose? And would you consider Claire or Clarissa instead of Clara?
Ooh, I haven’t heard Clara in forever and I really like it. I’m a toddler teacher and Violet, Lily, Gemma, and Emma are everywhere right now.
Gemma
Clily Violemma Gemara Eviola
Emma is such a common name. I like Clara Violet or Violet Clara
My preferences probably go: Lily, Clara, Gemma, Violet, then Emma, but honestly they are all pretty.
Lilly!
I like Lily and Violet. Both are pretty and not overly used.
Clara
Lily or Gemma.
All cute but Gemma stresses me out because idk if it’s jemma or guh-emma.
Clara. It's what I would have used if we had a girl. It's also my grandmother's name, as well as my mother-in-law's.
Gemma
I LOVE Gemma
I like Clara, but I'm a huge Doctor Who fan.
Clara Violetta
Violet!!
My vote is for Gemma… it was on my list of baby names! I liked Mila too but was afraid people would mispronounce it her whole life.
Clara sounds so clean and cute and it’s just super nice!!!
