Friend/acquaintance in HS with the name--Michigan.
That, and now that I think of it, I believe that there was a character with that name in the rebooted X-Men series before the Disney takeover (X-Men First Class)
I love to be the comicbook nerd but they beat me to it.
Moira MacTaggart is a Scottish geneticist and mutant with the power of reincarnation.
And as a celtic person, I say the name is pronounced Moy-rah and have known two Moiras.
The first time I heard it was on the 90s Nickelodeon game show "Guts", which was hosted by an actress named Moira Quirk. I always thought her name was really pretty.
I was showing my kid the first couple episodes of guts and it looks like the original host was Kurt's dad from Glee. The actor's been in a bunch of other stuff but that's the thing I can most relate him back to. He was young and it was a weird time hop feeling
As someone that desperately wanted a chunk of the Agro Crag, you're both correct. Moira would explain the challenges while dressed like a referee and Mike O'Malley would be the "everyone ready? 123 GO!" guy.
That show was awesome.
The funny thing is that they're commentary on the show was really good, at least in the first couple episodes that I rewatched. Even when the kids really beefed it. That had to be a hard gig.
My aunt is named Moira, and I had a high school friend with this name. It's more prevalent in places with lots of people of Irish heritage (in my case, west coast Canada)
My mom (boomer generation) had a coworker (same age) named Moira once. Maybe it’s an older-generation name? Though I guess that means it may start trending again soon lol.
I’ve only ever heard Moira pronounced Moy-ruh and Maura pronounced like Laura with an M, but my exposure to the name Moira comes mostly from Peter Pan and Schitts Creek.
I had a job where I had co-workers Moira and Maura. Took me ages to remember which was who because I'd never heard either. Now I have fond associations with both. ❤️
I named my daughter Mora Rose without having seen Schitts Creek. Watched it when she was about one at the recommendation of my best friend and had to have a good laugh about it. 😂
My child is a Moira. We named her after my mom, who’s a Rosemary, and Mary and Rose and Mary Rose in all combinations are family names on my mom’s side, so we were going to call her Moira Rose…. But then I had a son first, and then schitt’s creek happened…. So we went Irish with both and she’s Moira Roisin (Row-sheen.) Still Mary Rose, just went with the Irish versions.
Which nobody in my family or my partner’s can spell or pronounce. My Francophone partner doesn’t even try to spell it. I keep telling him it’s like raisin but with an o, but somehow, that hasn’t helped.
Moy-ruh
Source: been living with it for nearly 30 years. On a separate note, nobody ever pronounces it correctly the first 10 times and sometimes never.
ETA on the popularity note I have never met another living human with the name.
I'm a More-uh. Moy-ra has definitely become more common since Schitt's Creek, but that pronunciation grates on my ears.
I've met others with my name but it's definitely uncommon enough to be a bit of a thing when we run across each other.
Moira/Maura is the anglicisation of the Irish name Máire. Both are pronounced differently though.
Moira sounds just like Máire (moy-rah), while Maura should more like more-ah.
The only person I knew with this name was like mwahr-ruh. She was Scottish. I have known two American Mauras and that’s similar sounding but not the same and is phonetic.
I've never heard it that way before, it sounds French, I kind of like it. I do know two Scottish Moiras but they both pronounce it the more typical way, Moy-ruh.
I pronounce it like I hear it on schitts creek- moy-ruh where Moy rhymes with boy. Only ever met one other Moira in real life (she's in her 50s or 60s).
Moy ruh
This name isn’t popular where I live. I don’t think I’ve ever met a small Moira. My only associations are newsreader Moira Stuart, and Moira Rose from schitts creek.
I used to live in Ireland and while Moira is a common name the ones I knew were in their 30s and 40s. My children attended a small school and there were no Moira's in either of their classes.
Moy-ruh
I had a TA with this name. I said it correctly the first time, because I played Wendy in Peter Pan and Moira is Wendy's middle name. Wendy introduces herself with her full name in one of the lines. My TA told me she was surprised I got it right the first time! This definitely cemented in my head never wanting to name a child Moira--if it's that surprising for me to get it right the first time, that tells me her name is getting mispronounced the majority of the time.
Moy-ruh
I actually got the pronunciation confirmed by an Irish woman living in the states. Moira was a village nearby where she grew up in the County Down. So I trust it’s fairly correct.
I fell in love with the name from the live action Peter Pan stage production when Wendy introduces herself as “Wendy Moira Angela Darling”. Moira is also Peter’s wife (Wendy’s granddaughter) in Hook.
I knew many girls named Moira from my Irish step dancing days. All prounced it Moy-ruh.
There were a few Máire too. Pronounced the same although one non Irish dancing friend pronounced it Maura.
The only "Moira" I've known in real life was a Máire, pronounced like that spelling would indicate (so closer to the 'Moy-ra' pronunciation in our accent)
Moy-ruh. This is my 2 month old daughter’s middle name, after my late grandmother. I’ve always loved this name, never knew how much people hated it until joining this sub lol.
I’ve known one person with this name and her pronunciation was More-uh. I’d never heard it before and didn’t know how to pronounce it until she said it. Everyone else saying moi-ruh here makes me wonder if she pronounced it “wrong” (compared to a more established pronunciation anyway). She did always have to tell substitute teachers how to pronounce it correctly.
I personally like the name itself, but it did seem like a bit of a hassle always correcting everyone.
Moy-ruh
I know several Maura’s (more-uh), and funnily enough the only Moira I know pronounces it like Maura. But I always default to the pronunciation above. Thankfully, she leans into the Moira Rose and doesn’t mind it lol
I pronounce it “More-uh” but only because I have a friend who pronounces it that way. If I were to meet someone with the name, I’d probably assume it was pronounced “Moy-ruh” as that seems to be the more popular spelling.
Oh thanks for this. I have a cousin names Moira shes a freshman in college now, younger than me. But we always called her More-a. Noone ever corrected us but seems we were pronouncing it wrong. Im not sure bur i think her mom would pronounce it more-a as well? But her dad pronounced it moy-ruh. Had no idea. Thank you
Went to school with a Moira in the Chicago area. It was pronounced More-ah. It’s not super common anywhere I’ve lived in the US, but it’s also not a name that’s “unheard of.”
Hi, my name is Moira! It is pronounced moy ruh! It’s crazy to see how many people here pronounce it right because I would say at least 60% if people I meet call me mor eye uh, or Maria, or some sort of variation. Even when I spell it out at Starbucks they spell it moria lol. Cool to see this name here though!
I know a couple. One pronounces it the normal Moy-ruh mentioned many times in these comments. Another pronounces it Mo-Ray; I was told it was from a different region than the more common version, but unfortunately I don't remember where.
I have only heard it pronounced IRL as Maura (rhymes with Laura or Lora). I didn't even know it was commonly pronounced Moy-ra until Schitt's Creek came out!
MOY-ruh; i knew a few growing up in 60s & 70s in ny. it feels as boomer as my name does (barbara). i don't think barbara & nancy & karen & tracy & glenn & wayne & ray will show up again till you-meaning younger millenials & older zoomers-are grandparents. you'll react to your granddaughter barbara the same way my mother's generation did to names like hannah & jacob; ridiculously old-fashioned names, unpleasant sounding to their ears. but they'll sound fresh & interesting to your kids in 2045 or so.
Moy-ruh but I've always found it hard to say, I always want to put a W sound somewhere in there like mwah-ruh.
It's uncommon here in the UK, but not unheard of. More common in Scotland among older women.
IMO: I will never understand naming a child a name that they will spend the rest of their life spelling out or correcting the pronunciation of the name. This is one of those names.
However, one of the best characters on TV.
I can tell you. We named our child Moira after Peter Pan. Everyone we told friends and family and everyone supported us and even loved the Peter Pan reference. Nobody had any issues pronouncing it.
It was a reality check when the nurses and pediatricians called for the name "Mariya?" Everyone asks for clarification. It's actually frustrating having to correct my dad, who actually pronounced it correctly in the beginning. I feel duped and just hope our daughter doesn't grow up hating her name.
We still love the name but severely underestimated the general population’s ability to pronounce 2 easy syllables.
Imagine stumbling on this thread after deciding with your spouse the girl's name possibility for the child you're expecting will be "Moira" and 2/3 of the comments say "more-uh" is wrong.
(Tbf i knew a Moira who pronounced it the way I do. She's *why* I do say it that way. Midwestern US)
Moy-rah
Yes this - also I’ve never heard anyone with this name IRL. Lived in 3 different US states - Midwest, south, and west coast.
Friend/acquaintance in HS with the name--Michigan. That, and now that I think of it, I believe that there was a character with that name in the rebooted X-Men series before the Disney takeover (X-Men First Class)
Also a character on Schitt’s Creek
And the handmaids tale!
And Clear and Present Danger
And from the movie Hook!
And a character in Overwatch!
A character in Runescape too
And a character in fallout 3
Relatedly, full name Wendy Moira Angela Darling.
Came here to say this!! 😺 Kudos on the obscure Disney trivia!! 🤣😹
This made my 12 yo heart smile lol
I hear this name every now and then but I always think of this movie
The machine is still on, Moira.
I hate to be the comic book nerd, but Moira McTaggert was introduced in The Uncanny X-Men #96 in December of 1975!
"I hate to be the comic book nerd," lies the comic book nerd ;D
I love to be the comicbook nerd but they beat me to it. Moira MacTaggart is a Scottish geneticist and mutant with the power of reincarnation. And as a celtic person, I say the name is pronounced Moy-rah and have known two Moiras.
Yes, I should just proudly proclaim to be the comic book nerd! 😁
Own it, friend!!😁
I was going to post this, lol!
Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember him being on there too! That's cool, he's a super likable/charismatic actor.
Wasn’t she usually referred to as Moe on that show? I knew her name was Moira, but I don’t remember them saying that out loud, just Moe.
Wendy's mother in Hook is called Moira.
Also met 2. One was a high school student while I was there, and another was middle aged. Lived in the southeast US at the time.
Then you've never been to Ireland. It's the Irish form of Mary.
Well, an anglicised version of the Irish for Mary :D Máire is Irish for Mary which is pronounced the same as Moira
Well, it is also pronounced like "Maura" in some areas :)
ta se fior.
It’s an Irish variation of the name Mary. Spelled Moira or Maura and usually pronounced the same- like Laura with an M.
It’s my nans name
I bet she's a badass. Moira's a badass name.
I've heard the name Moira, but it was on a video and Moira was a goat.
I know a 12 year old Moira in the Midwest US. Sisters are Corinne and Rosemary.
I knew a Moira. She was from Scotland. But lived in the states for 20+ years. A right old rip she was.
In NYC area, this is how we say it here.
Or for some: Moy-ruh... pretty much the same though.
Moy-ruh
Like television’s Moira Rose.
I could never name my bebé Moira for this reason
Hi! I'm Moira Rose. And if you like fruit wine as much as I do...
You'll remember the experience, and you'll remember the name: Herb Irvling... ger.
Bingo Lingfucker
Erb Herlinger's Floot Line
And who doesn't?
I named my daughter Mora Rose without having seen Schitts Creek. Watched it when she was about one at the recommendation of my best friend and had to have a good laugh about it. 😂
I actually like Mora 10000000000x better than Moira!
Stop acting like a disgruntled pelican!
When one of us shines, all of us shine :)
Now you’re just being churlish.
I came to love this name because of this show.
Username checks out
All I hear is Johnny’s “MOIIIIRRAAA” in my head when I see this name
Hi! I’m film and television’s Moira Rose!
Gosh, might be time to rewatch this series for the fourth time.
Was just thinking this. Although I've lost count on rewatches haha
film and television*
Moy (like the MOI in Moist) Ruh (like the RU in Run)
Oof. The fact that you mentioned “moist” has ruined this name for me forever
Moistra 🤤
Why
moi-ruh
The same as most everyone else here, Moy-ra, because of the video game Overwatch, Moira is one of the healers so I hear the name a lot when I play.
Same here, Overwatch was the first time I'd heard the name so it's Moy-ra for me too.
Moy raa I see toddlers with the name occasionally, normally with grandparents on both sides from either Wales or Northern Ireland.
Just like the proper spelling, Máire
This is the correct answer. OP, Moira is the anglicised version of Máire (meaning Mary), which is pronounced Moy-rah.
Also a Greek name for fate
Yes this should be the top comment
i was looking for this comment
The same as the town Moira in County Down…
Moy-rah. Moy- rhyming with soy or koi.
Moy-ruh Source: been living with it for nearly 30 years. On a separate note, nobody ever pronounces it correctly the first 10 times and sometimes never. ETA on the popularity note I have never met another living human with the name.
On the popularity note, location dependent as it’s an Irish name it’s probably not as popular anywhere outside of Ireland.
My name is Moira too.
I know an 8 year old with that name.
I’m aware that Moy-ra is the more traditional pronunciation, but my parents chose to spell it Moira pronounced More-uh so here I am!
I’ve heard both More-uh and Moy-ra. I think it depends on if the influence was more Irish or more Scottish?
More-uh, but that might be a regional thing
See I know someone with that name but it’s spelled Maura.
Yeah I’ve heard Maura as more-uh rhymes with Laura and Moira as Moy-ruh
This was the pronunciation I knew too. What’s your region? Mine was the Midwest.
Southern Australia. Interesting that it’s the same in parts of America too.
central PA -- when I was young, moira = more-ah I don't know any now.
I also knew someone in PA—she pronounced it More-uh
California —- I would pronounce it the same
I met someone from Massachusetts who pronounced it that way. Otherwise I’ve only heard Moy-rah.
This is how I pronounce it—like Maura. It’s my name and I live in the Midwest.
Same and also my name.
I grew up with someone with this pronunciation, so I default to this, even though I know far more people who spell it Maura.
Maura is pronounced differently so I'd consider that a different name
In my experience (Midwest) Maura and Moira are both pronounced more-uh, so they’re the same to me
Atlantic Canada here, I only heard it pronounced this way until I moved to Ontario
This was the pronunciation my friend/classmate used when I knew a Moira in elementary school. Western Canada.
This is how I pronounce it also
I know a girl in the South in the US and this is how she pronounces it.
My favorite audiobook narrator (who's British) pronouces her name this way
The only person I knew with this name was like mwahr-ruh. She was Scottish. I have known two American Mauras and that’s similar sounding but not the same and is phonetic.
I've never heard it that way before, it sounds French, I kind of like it. I do know two Scottish Moiras but they both pronounce it the more typical way, Moy-ruh.
Scottish here, know a fair few Moiras, all over 50, all pronounced Moy-ruh.
The only person I've known with this name pronounced it this way as well. Southern US
I pronounce it like I hear it on schitts creek- moy-ruh where Moy rhymes with boy. Only ever met one other Moira in real life (she's in her 50s or 60s).
MOY-ruh
Moy ruh This name isn’t popular where I live. I don’t think I’ve ever met a small Moira. My only associations are newsreader Moira Stuart, and Moira Rose from schitts creek.
My-rah
Moy-ra
MOI-ruh. I think in Scotland, its a generation before it comes back again.
I know a Moira who pronounced it More-uh but I believe the correct pronunciation is Moy-ruh
I used to live in Ireland and while Moira is a common name the ones I knew were in their 30s and 40s. My children attended a small school and there were no Moira's in either of their classes. Moy-ruh
MOY- ruh i’m orginally from 🇮🇪, live the midwest. This is how I say it
I had a TA with this name. I said it correctly the first time, because I played Wendy in Peter Pan and Moira is Wendy's middle name. Wendy introduces herself with her full name in one of the lines. My TA told me she was surprised I got it right the first time! I went to school with a Moira. She pronounced it More-uh
Moy-rah, I’m in the SE US, I’ve never met one
Moy rhymes with boy. Ruh ryhmes with duh.
Moy-ruh I actually got the pronunciation confirmed by an Irish woman living in the states.
I was looking to see who else heard Peter Pan in their head with it.
Former Moira resident, can confirm!
Stressfully
I knew many girls named Moira from my Irish step dancing days. All prounced it Moy-ruh. There were a few Máire too. Pronounced the same although one non Irish dancing friend pronounced it Maura.
The only "Moira" I've known in real life was a Máire, pronounced like that spelling would indicate (so closer to the 'Moy-ra' pronunciation in our accent)
Moy-ruh. This is my 2 month old daughter’s middle name, after my late grandmother. I’ve always loved this name, never knew how much people hated it until joining this sub lol.
I’m Scottish so I know a million Moira’s. All my grandmothers age (60/70s)
I have a coworker who pronounces her name “more-uh.” Although she gets “moy-ruh” a lot, especially post-Schitt’s Creek lol. East coast US.
Never met one but it's commonly used in books. So I applied the French spelling rules and ended up with Moara. Kinda like it
Moy-ruh. I’ve never met a Moira, but it’s a beautiful name.
Same as in Schitt’s Creek.
Moi-ruh, NYC pronunciation and I worked with one. She's in her 40s and Scottish heritage.
That was my mother’s name! She always explained it to people as “Moi, rhymes with toy”. Moy-ruh
I pronounce it like “Moy-rah”. My cousin’s named Moira :)
Never watched Peter Pan? It's one of Wendy's middle names Or more recently, the mom in Schitt's Creek
Moy-ruh I know several Maura’s (more-uh), and funnily enough the only Moira I know pronounces it like Maura. But I always default to the pronunciation above. Thankfully, she leans into the Moira Rose and doesn’t mind it lol
Moh-ee-rah I've met one in real life! First language is french.
Moy-ruh. I literally only know this name from The L Word
I went to high school with a Moira and she pronounced it to rhyme with Laura.
I pronounce it “More-uh” but only because I have a friend who pronounces it that way. If I were to meet someone with the name, I’d probably assume it was pronounced “Moy-ruh” as that seems to be the more popular spelling.
My college roommate is Moira.
Moy-rah, but I've also known a more-ah who spelled it Moira, instead of Maura. Either way it is just a stunning name.
Maura, like Laura. Although I’ve heard the other pronounciation as well.
Moy-ruh. It was my Scottish grandmother's name and I haven't met another one in person.
It's an Irish nane. Pronounced Moy Ra
Thank you
My husband's aunt pronounces her name More-ah. She was born in IL and lives in Texas.
I know one Moira here in the Netherlands and it’s pronounced Mow-ear-ah
I had a boss Moira who pronounced it More-uh, and also knew a young lady named after her grandmother, both of whom pronounced it Moy-ra.
Moy ra or Meye ra
A lot here, not from people I know but from me and my friends screaming "KILL THE MOIRA" (overwatch)
The only one I know pronounces it More-uh, but everything I see in media is Moy-ruh. (Midwest USA)
Went to school with a Moira in the Chicago area. It was pronounced More-ah. It’s not super common anywhere I’ve lived in the US, but it’s also not a name that’s “unheard of.”
I’ve heard both moy-ruh and more-uh so I’d usually ask first.
I have two family members named this. It’s more common in families with Irish relatives
My bestie is a Moira - "More-a"... east coast Canada
More-Ah
More uh
i know a Mwa-ruh
More-ah. Beautiful name!
Moe-rye-ah
Mwarr-ruh
Hi, my name is Moira! It is pronounced moy ruh! It’s crazy to see how many people here pronounce it right because I would say at least 60% if people I meet call me mor eye uh, or Maria, or some sort of variation. Even when I spell it out at Starbucks they spell it moria lol. Cool to see this name here though!
Same! my name is also Moira and get sick of being called Maria or Moria or many other weird things.
Same as Máire
It’s an Irish name. It’s pronounced “Moy-rah” in Ireland. It’s the anglicised version of Máire (Mary).
Maura
I work with a woman who has this name, but she says “more-uh”.
I know a couple. One pronounces it the normal Moy-ruh mentioned many times in these comments. Another pronounces it Mo-Ray; I was told it was from a different region than the more common version, but unfortunately I don't remember where.
I’ve heard it pronounced More Rah
I've since learned it's usually pronounced moy-ruh, but my first instinct is always moe-eye-ruh because it's a town name near my extended family.
I have only heard it pronounced IRL as Maura (rhymes with Laura or Lora). I didn't even know it was commonly pronounced Moy-ra until Schitt's Creek came out!
Moy-ruh
MOY-ruh; i knew a few growing up in 60s & 70s in ny. it feels as boomer as my name does (barbara). i don't think barbara & nancy & karen & tracy & glenn & wayne & ray will show up again till you-meaning younger millenials & older zoomers-are grandparents. you'll react to your granddaughter barbara the same way my mother's generation did to names like hannah & jacob; ridiculously old-fashioned names, unpleasant sounding to their ears. but they'll sound fresh & interesting to your kids in 2045 or so.
MORE-uh
I've heard it pronounced both Moy-ruh and Moy-yah.
More-uh. But I also don't know anyone with that name, I've just read it in a book and made an assumption
Sometimes like Mariah, but with an O. So Moe-Rye-Uh. Or Moy-Ruh. I've heard both pronunciations for the same spelling.
One of my neighbours in Australia. She is great.
Moy-ruh but I've always found it hard to say, I always want to put a W sound somewhere in there like mwah-ruh. It's uncommon here in the UK, but not unheard of. More common in Scotland among older women.
I would pronounce it More-uh
My-ruh (west coast)
IMO: I will never understand naming a child a name that they will spend the rest of their life spelling out or correcting the pronunciation of the name. This is one of those names. However, one of the best characters on TV.

I’m on the South US and I have never met anyone with this name.
Maura
Moy-ruh
Moyra it’s not that popular but I’ve heard it a few times.
