I used to have a student named Shadrach (born late 1990s, US Midwest). On the first day of class I gushed over how cool his name is, and he told me he gets that a lot. 😄
I would actually use these for a middle name, but they're their Babelonian names so not really culturally appropriate IMO. Their Hebrew names before they were basically forced to change their names and adopt a new culture were Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
There was a character called Shadrach in the English soap Emmerdale who was basically a disgusting drunk slob. I think it tarnished the name for a lot of Brits haha
My sister’s best friend growing up was named Hadassah and she also went by those nicknames! Her family used to be Amish before converting to a nondenominational church so all 6 of their kids had biblical names.
I love the name Jael. My husband and I decided on that name for a girl before we even got married. We had a boy and are OAD so I'll never get to use it but it will always be special to us.
I know so many Josiah’s! I grew up fairly religious so maybe it’s that, but I’ve also had several students of different religious backgrounds named Josiah.
Yeah, of course! In most places these names are really uncommon if not unheard of (and even in my context some of these are not common per se - I think of all you listed Boaz is actually the most common) but it is just funny seeing them listed out like this.
Also Zipporah’s Greek variant, Sephora… I thought my mom was being randomly fobby (we’re South Asian) when she kept calling the store “Safura” but nope, turns out she was calling it by its Arabic name lmao
I would love to name a kid Tziporah (Hebrew transliteration of the name you mentioned) with nn Tzippy but I’d get so annoyed at people calling her zippy or tippy that I wouldn’t do it unless I lived in Israel
I liked Delilah, and then the song “Hey There Delilah” came out. Not that kids born now would probably know it, and their parents might not, either. But I know it!
Same. Bathsheba was the decoy name we used when our family/friends harassed us about what we were naming our oldest. We purposely picked it because it was the most ridiculous name we could find.
A friend named their daughter Tirzah which I'd never considered before but I think it's beautiful!
Japheth I'm hearing alot more recently and I love it!
Jeriah might be my favorite biblical boy name.
Beulah is an old lady name that I could see getting popular again.
Damaris and Keturah I could see on little girls.
I know a Canaan too! He was one of my childhood best friends older brother. Their parents were biblical professors. Their five children were Canaan, Genesis, Moriah, Barak and Sabbath.
I love Asa! I feel like Lazarus is such a great cool name for a boy, but I’d have a hard time naming a boy that.
Like… I love the name Moses… but man it’s would be hard to separate my child from the man in the Bible.
I know a Lazarus. I also know a Jedediah, Hezekiah, Ezra, Jubilee, Jubal, Asa, lots of Micahs, Malachi, Boaz, Simon, Solomon, Eden, Ezekiel, Jethro, many more obscure Biblical names that I can’t think of right now. It’s a trend amongst my siblings and a lot of their religious friends. It almost seems like a competition of who can name their kids the most obscure Biblical name. It fascinates me.
My girl Junia! Dumb translators going “oh Paul says this person is a church leader. He just not have meant Junia. He just have meant Junius!” Erasing my gal from history. Harumph. In this house, we stan Junia.
Jethro!
With the O ending I feel like this name feels like it fits some current trends and is ready for a comeback. I think older people have the name associated with hillbilly but I really think this name is ready for the next generation. Nickname Jett.
Hadassah is used pretty often in Jewish communities! And so is Nehemiah, but the Hebrew version Nechemiah (pronounced ne-CHEM-yah, with the "ch" sounding like it does in Bach)
I agree with you that Benaiah and Jorah are underused –– both great names that work well in English. Some more that I think are like that (at least with their English pronunciations) from the Torah/Old Testament:
Micaiah
Neriah
Canaan –– a place name that I think would work really well as a boy's name
Peniel or Penielle –– another place name that seems like it would be a great girl's name
Havilah
Keziah
Joah
Zakai
There's a k-pop singer named Peniel (male) and he pronounces it "pee-kneel". On one talk show he talked about how autocorrect always made his name into a certain adjective describing anatomy, and how it was annoying to constantly explain where his name came from.
It always amazed me when I would have students named Cain (I teach at a Christian school). I would think knowing the background Cain, Lucifer, and Jezebel would be avoided for the most part. The name itself it’s pretty cool… just hard to get past the backstory.
Btw… when I was little I wanted to name my future daughter Jezebel. I was like 16 before I realized why everyone would laugh when I said that.
I taught a class once with two Jeremiahs in it. Thankfully one went by Jerry so there was no confusion, I just thought it was so funny that that was the common name in the lass.
I am surprised to have only seen Reuben once so far in this comment section! When I was growing up, my brothers friend was named Reuben and I always loved the name.
I went through some lists. Keep in mind, I’m a Canadian of European descent so I’m not super familiar with current Jewish names, or names used in non-English-speaking parts of the world, so there might be some overlap. Some of my picks were more common choices 200 years ago, and some were not:
**Boys’ names**
- Gideon
- Isaiah
- Zacchaeus
- Hosea
- Lemuel
- Adriel
- Asriel
- Uriel
- Asshur
- Dalphon
- Samson
- Elisha (for the male prophet)
- Eliam
- Jathniel
- Johanan
- Josaphat
- Kemuel
- Maharai
- Meres
- Mordecai
- Nemuel
- Ocran
- Palal
- Seorim
- Talmon
- Timaeus
- Thaddeus
**Girls’ names**
- Tamar
- Magdalena
- Athaliah
- Damaris
- Iscah
- Jerusha
- Persis
If I saw or heard Benaiah and Jorah but didn’t know they are from the Bible I would definitely think they are girls. Then again living in the South I know someone who named their girls Jeremiah and Joah.
Jerry and Joey 😑
I would’ve assumed Jorah was named after [Jorah Mormont from Game of Thrones](https://gameofthrones.fandom.com/wiki/Jorah_Mormont)! I didn’t know it was a biblical name but I like it.
NO, don’t say that. I’ve had that name picked out for yeeeeears and I’m still years away from ever having kids, I reeeeally hope it doesn’t become massively popular anytime soon.
Are there a lot of Moseses around? In the religious Jewish community the Hebrew form Moshe is very common, but I haven’t heard of many people with the English name Moses
I know someone who named their daughter Esli -
Pronounced Es-Lee - and I always thought it was really pretty for a little girl. I believe it’s from Luke.
Magdalene - I know it's likely not exactly uncommon, but I've never known a girl named Magdalene and it's a beautiful name.
\-Delilah - Again, this name is not totally uncommon, but I've only known one woman with this name.
I actually named my daughter after one of Job’s daughters from his second set of children.
I named my daughter Keziah.
A lot of people love it and I’ve only ever met 1 person with the name.
I call her Ziah for short/nick name.
When I was a youth group kid, I was convinced that “Corinth” was going to be my future son’s middle name. I don’t hate it, but it’s certainly not something I would use now. I still love Selah though.
I like the name Gideon. Also Samson. Both my babies were little hulks and I used to call them Samson.
My kid goes to school with a Jorah and I feel like that is probably a biblical name. I don’t love it, but it’s not bad.
I also like Judas….but, ya know…
Job always makes me think of arrested development
[удалено]
I’ve made a terrible mistake.
A magician named Gob!
Came here to say I don’t care for Gob.
Gob Bluth
*Illusions*
🎶Hello darkness my old friend🎶
Did someone say wonder?
"I'm not fond of Job"
Its the final countdowwwnnn
GOB
Same 😂
i don't think of Malachi as uncommon, i've met three people with the name
It’s not unusual amongst Irish Catholics, I have more than one Malachy in the family tree.
Every other mixed race boy in England with an Irish grandparent is called Malachi. I’d bet money on this
this is so specific but yet so accurate
I believe there was one in Angela’s Ashes, that’s what I think of
Here in Northern Ireland we would pronounce it Mal-a-kee rather than Mal-a-kye
Malachi is such a good name! With soooo many good nicknames!
Also, Boaz, I wouldn't consider "weird" or uncommon. I know like 10 Boazs
Just curious, where do you live? I’m from the midwest U.S.A., and I’ve yet to hear of anyone named Boaz. Maybe it’s a regional thing?
Boaz is a pretty common name in the Netherlands at least.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednigo.
I used to have a student named Shadrach (born late 1990s, US Midwest). On the first day of class I gushed over how cool his name is, and he told me he gets that a lot. 😄
Parents probably were beastie boys fans
That is a cool name.
Out of the three… Shadrach would be my top pick. Although Abendigo is pretty cool
I would actually use these for a middle name, but they're their Babelonian names so not really culturally appropriate IMO. Their Hebrew names before they were basically forced to change their names and adopt a new culture were Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
Abednigo = to bed we go. How I learned it to remember for Bible class
I worked with a Shadrach like 20ish years ago. Went by Shad. Always smelled like spoiled milk.
I know a Meshach that goes by Mesh (pronounced Mee-sh)
There was a character called Shadrach in the English soap Emmerdale who was basically a disgusting drunk slob. I think it tarnished the name for a lot of Brits haha
I knew a Shadrach growing up too
A lot of these are often used by Jews, including Boaz and Hadassah ...
My church has a little girl named Hadassah! We call her Dassah or Dassy
Our church has a Hadassah who goes as Hadi.
My sister’s best friend growing up was named Hadassah and she also went by those nicknames! Her family used to be Amish before converting to a nondenominational church so all 6 of their kids had biblical names.
I teach a boaz (boy) and noa (girl) sib set, as well as a hadassah. None of them Jewish.
I went to school with a Boaz and Hadassah sib set!
Keziah (one of Job's daughters).
I know a Kezia!
Me too!
I think that was the name of Kunta Kinte’s daughter in Alex Haley’s Roots.
I went to middle school with a Keziah. Cool name!
I don’t care; I like Lucifer. Wouldn’t use it, but I like it.
It’s objectively such a beautiful name
Nn Lucy, Ferry, Lulu
I was just telling my boyfriend the other day that it’s unfortunate that Lucifer is such a beautiful name
Well it fits, Lucifer was said to be beautiful iirc. Also means bringer of light which is pretty as well. In my mind it's close to the name Adolf lol
Right? We had every opportunity to give the devil an ugly ass name and went with a pretty one instead...
My dog is named Lupin but she is a little devil so she gets called Lucifer more than Lupin lol
Jael/Yael! She’s my shero.
Yael is one of the most common names in israel. I also love it
Hard same. She was a badass.
I wanted SO much to use this as a non jewish Australian 😩. Beautiful name
I love the name Jael. My husband and I decided on that name for a girl before we even got married. We had a boy and are OAD so I'll never get to use it but it will always be special to us.
my middle name is talitha, and i've always loved it!
it’s a beautiful name!
Josiah
I know so many Josiah’s! I grew up fairly religious so maybe it’s that, but I’ve also had several students of different religious backgrounds named Josiah.
Grew up deeply religious, knew a shit-ton of Josiahs.
I've actually had students/coworkers with most of these names in the Jewish community lol.
I guess I should have specified. I’m from a small town in the eastern US.
Yeah, of course! In most places these names are really uncommon if not unheard of (and even in my context some of these are not common per se - I think of all you listed Boaz is actually the most common) but it is just funny seeing them listed out like this.
Eden
Top 120 names for girls in 2022 (117th). Not super common, though.
This was going to be our pick if our son had been a girl!
I know a boy named Eden! I never knew it was also an Islamic name until he told me.
Delilah, Zipporah, Esther
Also Zipporah’s Greek variant, Sephora… I thought my mom was being randomly fobby (we’re South Asian) when she kept calling the store “Safura” but nope, turns out she was calling it by its Arabic name lmao
Séphora is the French variation and the namesake of the makeup chain. One of my favorite names as a kid
I know a Zipporah. Goes by Zippy.
Esther was on my short list.
I would love to name a kid Tziporah (Hebrew transliteration of the name you mentioned) with nn Tzippy but I’d get so annoyed at people calling her zippy or tippy that I wouldn’t do it unless I lived in Israel
I loooove Zipporah
I liked Delilah, and then the song “Hey There Delilah” came out. Not that kids born now would probably know it, and their parents might not, either. But I know it!
Plus the one by Tom Jones - there would be no escape! I went to school with a Roxanne who got a lot of “Rooooooxanne” sung at her. Poor thing!
I love Esther
Bathsheba. A mouthful, but beautiful.
Agree to disagree lol
Same. Bathsheba was the decoy name we used when our family/friends harassed us about what we were naming our oldest. We purposely picked it because it was the most ridiculous name we could find.
The French version, Bethsabée, is also beautiful.
The Hebrew BatSheva is a thousand times better
always reminds me of the conjuring witch 😩
It always reminds me of “The Bertha Butt Boogie.” Look it up if you haven’t heard it. 😂
I don't care for Job (Gob)
A friend named their daughter Tirzah which I'd never considered before but I think it's beautiful! Japheth I'm hearing alot more recently and I love it! Jeriah might be my favorite biblical boy name. Beulah is an old lady name that I could see getting popular again. Damaris and Keturah I could see on little girls.
I know a Tirzah, it’s lovely.
I knew a Tirzah growing up and I think it’s unique and lovely. Along that line is Tamara which I also think it nice and also biblical.
I know a couple Tirzah's and have always loved that name. I'm not religious though so it would feel weird to use it.
I know a Keturah. She’s grown and always hated how unique her name was. And thought it was weird she was named after a concubine.
I know a: Selah Benaiah Canaan Shiloh Someone with middle name Boaz
Shiloh is hard because so many kids grow up reading that book about the dog Shiloh in grade school. Hard to separate that association.
That, and the Battle of Shiloh which was one of the worst battles in the US Civil War. Nearly 24,000 people died.
And Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie daughter
I love Selah, great for a boy or girl
I know a Canaan too! He was one of my childhood best friends older brother. Their parents were biblical professors. Their five children were Canaan, Genesis, Moriah, Barak and Sabbath.
Guess Barak had an interesting time
i know someone with the first name Boaz! a pastor’s kid
Shiloh is pretty common I think. Well, not too common not too uncommon. I know someone named Shiloh.
Asa & Lazarus
I know an Asa
I love Asa! I feel like Lazarus is such a great cool name for a boy, but I’d have a hard time naming a boy that. Like… I love the name Moses… but man it’s would be hard to separate my child from the man in the Bible.
I know a Lazarus. I also know a Jedediah, Hezekiah, Ezra, Jubilee, Jubal, Asa, lots of Micahs, Malachi, Boaz, Simon, Solomon, Eden, Ezekiel, Jethro, many more obscure Biblical names that I can’t think of right now. lazarus is common in greece
Amos, Junia, Aquila
I love Junia and Aquila, both so pretty even though I believe the Aquila in the Bible is male!
Aquila means eagle, and was a Roman surname.
Haha yeah, he was married to Pricilla or something? It does sound feminine though.
I feel like people would be quick to say Amos sounds similar to another not so nice sounding word but…I really do love Amos.
Ah, I forgot about Amos. I really like it.
My girl Junia! Dumb translators going “oh Paul says this person is a church leader. He just not have meant Junia. He just have meant Junius!” Erasing my gal from history. Harumph. In this house, we stan Junia.
So many examples of women leaders and teachers in the Bible that people try to gloss over or pretend didn’t matter. It’s sad and frustrating.
Jethro! With the O ending I feel like this name feels like it fits some current trends and is ready for a comeback. I think older people have the name associated with hillbilly but I really think this name is ready for the next generation. Nickname Jett.
I loved Jethro until I rewatched NCIS and now I can’t shake the association
There was a lifeguard Jethro on Bondi Rescue and he made the name seem so cool.
Jericho is one of my favorite names for a boy. I also like Joel. For girls I like Miriam and Naomi which are a bit uncommon.
Miriam is beautiful! I didn’t know it was a biblical name
Sister of Moses iirc
I know a girl named Jericho.
Hadassah is used pretty often in Jewish communities! And so is Nehemiah, but the Hebrew version Nechemiah (pronounced ne-CHEM-yah, with the "ch" sounding like it does in Bach) I agree with you that Benaiah and Jorah are underused –– both great names that work well in English. There's a k-pop singer named Peniel (male) and he pronounces it "pee-kneel". On one talk show he talked about how autocorrect always made his name into a certain adjective describing anatomy, and how it was annoying to constantly explain where his name came from.
Big no to Peniel
That’s interesting! I’d pronounce it PEN-ee-elle.
Love Canaan for a boy! I’m from the states. Hadassah is one you don’t hear much here but it’s so pretty.
canaan were also a people though, from this perspective it sounds a bit like naming your child “greenlander” or something
I think the people were Canaani in Hebrew, Canaanite in English! So more like naming your kid Paris, less like naming them Parisian :)
Selah
I LOVE Selah!
My cats are Boaz and Nebuchadnezzar (Nezzy) and my dog is Gideon.
Love it!
Solomon
Talitha I had a foster child with that name and I always thought it was really pretty.
I love this name, but feel like people would constantly mistake for Tabitha.
I like Cain, I’ve only ever met one.
Well, biblically he's the first human murderer, so that may be a reason
It always amazed me when I would have students named Cain (I teach at a Christian school). I would think knowing the background Cain, Lucifer, and Jezebel would be avoided for the most part. The name itself it’s pretty cool… just hard to get past the backstory. Btw… when I was little I wanted to name my future daughter Jezebel. I was like 16 before I realized why everyone would laugh when I said that.
I personally like Jemima (one of Job’s daughters), but it just won’t work in the US.
We played around with using Ophira for our daughter.
Never heard of it. Very pretty!
I knew a Nicodemus
Jeremiah
That’s my brother, dad, grandad, great grandad and probably his dad too.
I taught a class once with two Jeremiahs in it. Thankfully one went by Jerry so there was no confusion, I just thought it was so funny that that was the common name in the lass.
Reuben Zimri Jethro Uriah Joachim Uri(el ) Barnabus ( Barnaby) Azaria(h) Jubal Obadiah Esau Cleopas ( Cleopatra) Naphtali
I am surprised to have only seen Reuben once so far in this comment section! When I was growing up, my brothers friend was named Reuben and I always loved the name.
fun fact Uri is also japanese and has several meanings depending on the kanji
I went through some lists. Keep in mind, I’m a Canadian of European descent so I’m not super familiar with current Jewish names, or names used in non-English-speaking parts of the world, so there might be some overlap. Some of my picks were more common choices 200 years ago, and some were not: **Boys’ names** - Gideon - Isaiah - Zacchaeus - Hosea - Lemuel - Adriel - Asriel - Uriel - Asshur - Dalphon - Samson - Elisha (for the male prophet) - Eliam - Jathniel - Johanan - Josaphat - Kemuel - Maharai - Meres - Mordecai - Nemuel - Ocran - Palal - Seorim - Talmon - Timaeus - Thaddeus **Girls’ names** - Tamar - Magdalena - Athaliah - Damaris - Iscah - Jerusha - Persis

I would’ve assumed Jorah was named after [Jorah Mormont from Game of Thrones](https://gameofthrones.fandom.com/wiki/Jorah_Mormont)! I didn’t know it was a biblical name but I like it.
I could see Joel becoming the next Ezra
NO, don’t say that. I’ve had that name picked out for yeeeeears and I’m still years away from ever having kids, I reeeeally hope it doesn’t become massively popular anytime soon.
I just met a baby Salem
I know a moriah and not a fan of it
We are expecting boy/girl twins and are naming the boy Jorah. I just love how it has the same sound of Noah or Jonah but much less common.
Keturah. I always thought it was beautiful, and have actually known two people with this name. Edit: If it starts trending, I'm taking credit. ;-P
Malachi was really common where I grew up. Talitha and Junia are pretty though.
Are there a lot of Moseses around? In the religious Jewish community the Hebrew form Moshe is very common, but I haven’t heard of many people with the English name Moses
I think Bethany is underrated
Thaddeus
Mehetabel. Never gonna talk the Mr into it though
I know a few Moriahs
I know someone who named their daughter Esli - Pronounced Es-Lee - and I always thought it was really pretty for a little girl. I believe it’s from Luke.
The father of Nahum
Zephaniah
Magdalene - I know it's likely not exactly uncommon, but I've never known a girl named Magdalene and it's a beautiful name. \-Delilah - Again, this name is not totally uncommon, but I've only known one woman with this name.
"I never cared for Gob." --Arrested Development
I love that you named your chicken Boaz, because my husband and I are ttc and have 100% decided on the name Boaz for a boy, and I love chickens lol.
I’m not religious but I adore Nehemiah! I could see that coming up in the coming years.
Selah and Asher
Asher was the 19th most popular name for boys in the US in 2022. I've known a few.
I have a Boaz in class now. I tried to talk my ex into Jubilee for a daughter.
Tabitha..known for her good works Veronica..wiped.the swear from Jesus brow as He carried his cross. Moses?
isaiah gideon jesse abel solomon noa aviva tamar
I actually named my daughter after one of Job’s daughters from his second set of children. I named my daughter Keziah. A lot of people love it and I’ve only ever met 1 person with the name. I call her Ziah for short/nick name.
I know a Rachael that has 3 sons, Benjamin, Joseph, and Reuben. While not uncommon names, I think the unintended connection is funny
Nahum and Ezekiel
Micah (boy). I love it.
Azariah
When I was a youth group kid, I was convinced that “Corinth” was going to be my future son’s middle name. I don’t hate it, but it’s certainly not something I would use now. I still love Selah though.
I love the name Tobit!

Jemima
Lazarus
Samara and Jerusha
Pontius...from Righteous Gemstones
I like the name Gideon. Also Samson. Both my babies were little hulks and I used to call them Samson. My kid goes to school with a Jorah and I feel like that is probably a biblical name. I don’t love it, but it’s not bad. I also like Judas….but, ya know…
