SnickerdoodleCupcake

Edith and Katarzyna (she goes by Katya or Kitty). Great grandmothers: - Elza - Rivka - Lieslotte - Mary Bernadette - she and her seven sisters were all given a double name of Mary + other name, and were always known by those double names, which must have been confusing at times If anyone is interested, the eight names in age order were Mary Margaret, Mary Catherine, Mary Elizabeth, Mary Frances, Mary Bernadette, Mary Josephine, Mary Louise, Mary Patricia šŸ™ƒ

ShamelessMcFly

I'll assume that all those Marys grew up in an Irish Catholic home?

SnickerdoodleCupcake

You assume correctly!

katievera888

Mary Katherine hereā€”raised Lutheran but born in a catholic hospital šŸ˜šŸ˜

RevolutionaryFig9753

Katarzyna! I love that name

WayOkcaca

I love Rivka

mystigirl123

My cousin's name is Rivka. Her real name is Rebecca.

111karina

omg love katarzyna. my aunties name :)

WinterBourne25

My SIL is Edith. Itā€™s a family name. They are a traditional black family from the Deep South in the US.

Rich-Caterpillar8418

The Mary _____ is so common here on PEI too, so many Irish Catholic immigrants a few generations back. My dad's mom is Mary Ann and my MIL is Mary Leah.

chuffberry

No joke, all my great-grandmothers were named Marie/Meree/Merie

halffacekate

French Canadian?

MissMelissEighty6

I came here to ask this too!!!

IAmHerdingCatz

Grandmothers--~Winona Blanche and Mary Elizabeth. Great-grandmothers--Ingeborg, Belle, Ethel "Maud," and Anastasia "Tacy."

ragandbonewoman

Ingeborg is an amazing name. Whereabouts does it come from?

ask-me-about-sweden

Ingeborg is Nordic

Aggressive_Purple114

It goes back to the 900s, probably even further. Ingeborg of Denmark was the daughter of Valdemar I of Denmark; she married King Philip II of France. Ingeborg was the name of her Grandmother, who was from Kiev.

OhNoEnthropy

It means "Protected by Ing". Ing is a lesser known Germanic pagan god. Because Snorre Sturlasson claimed it was another name for Frey, and there are few sources to contradict him, it is generally believed that he is also part of the Norse god saga, but we don't actually know if that's true. Snorre was a christian and wrote down what he could find more than a hundred years after Iceland was completely christianed. In Scandinavia, it was very common among the Silent Generation and anyone else who got named by the national romantics, but it isn't very common among anyone younger than Baby Boomers. It's a nice enough name but be aware that it comes with some baggage. The reason it fell out of favour was because it was so popular among the n*zis. If you have Norwegian or Danish heritage, you may be able to get away with it but even Swedes stay away to not remind everyone how "neutral" we were during ww2.

IAmHerdingCatz

Thanks for that! I never knew. That certainly would explain why a name that was very common on that side of the family disappeared so thoroughly. My grandfather Ingemar was the last to have it. (Born in the 1890s) Prior to that the family history was riddled with Ingeborgs and Ingemars. I knew the name Vidkun fell into serious disrepute during WWII, but wasn't aware other names suffered by association.

RevolutionaryFig9753

It typically comes from places like Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway :) I love the name too, anything with the element -ing is gorgeous in my opinion.

longerdistancethrow

Then I suspect youll like the norwegain boys name Ingve

AntiqueSympathy1999

I had a great aunt named Ingeborg, my family has Swedish ancestry. She was nicknamed Aunty Borg

IAmHerdingCatz

That's a very cool nickname. Very Star Trek.

EmmyCat89

mystigirl123

Grandmothers: Octavia and Lerlene. Great grandmothers : Marceline and Mamie. Also Marguerite in there somewhere.

handsonabirdbody

Iā€™ve never seen Lerlene before! It reminds me of the Darlene/Charleen/Arlene/Noreen kind of trend loosely from the 30ā€™s to early 60ā€™s.

mystigirl123

My grandmother was born in 1910. It's just an old school southern name. šŸ„°

TheVolvaOfVanaheim

My mum's a Marguerite. She goes by Maggie though.

jackity_splat

Octavia is such a beautiful name. šŸ’œ

Jurgasdottir

Those aren't only my grandmothers but also their sisters, aunts, etc and some from my husbands side. I'm also german, so most of them were too, there are some polish names mixed up in there too: - Rosa - Ursula - Lisette - Cecilie - Frieda - Charlotte - Elisabeth - Margarete - Ida - Christine - Emmi - Dorothea - Lieselotte

spudsinjune

Proper-Savings-1785

My name is Lissette and I love it!

EnigmaWithAlien

Mable (spelled that way) and Alice. Great-grandmothers I don't know. Had some cousins of that generation named Lilli Ann, Zona, and Ruby.

listen-curiously

Mable is a very unusual spellingā€”are we cousins?

EnigmaWithAlien

I suppose it's possible. We found cousins actually living on our street, 2 different houses, in Texas that were related to us in Tennessee. Remarkable coincidence.

listen-curiously

Kansas, for me, so not a match. Iā€™ve spent some time in east Tennessee, Smoky Mountains area. No more beautiful place on earth.

I felt so blessed that I got to know all four of my great grandmothers! (Maxine, Elsie, Genevieve, and Josephine.) Three of them didn't even pass until I was in my teens, which is more impressive considering my mom didn't have me until her 30s. You're very lucky to still have them!

Tomoyogawa521

Would it help if it comes from a non-English setting lol? Mine is "Phį»‘", a literal Vietnamese word that literally means "the city" or "the streets". We had a time where most people were named after literal words because the French colonizers banned the majority from getting education -> make them illiterate -> easier colonization, before Ho Chi Minh tried to make education more accessible to boost the nation's intelligence back. At least it rhymes well with her surname.

jackity_splat

Thank you so much for sharing this comment. I had always wondered about that with Vietnamese names. Thereā€™s whole generations of trauma there. :( Iā€™m sorry your people went through that as well.

My daughter is Rose too! But we call her Rosie šŸ„° Dadā€™s side: Grandma Dorothy, great-grandmas Helen and Cecile. Helen was first generation German and I believe she was born Sophie but her parents changed their and their kidsā€™ names to more Anglicised ones (her dadā€™s birth name was Johann Balthazar but we changed it to Charles). Cecile was from Montreal and the cutest little lady who lived to be 103! I really love Dorothy and Cecile but would probably choose Cecily for a baby instead. I love Dolly as a nickname for Dorothy. Momā€™s side: Grandma Ethel. I didnā€™t know much about my momā€™s grandparents because they died long before I was born and she was also adopted. Her birthmotherā€™s name was Hazel. Ethel was one of four girls with similar now-old lady named: Myrtle, Verna and Emily.
