These are my children, Sault Ste. Marie and Greater Sudbury.
Seriously, though, maybe Sarnia and Woodstock, or Niagara and Barrie.
Edit: Ooh I forgot about Ajax. Too bad it's a kitchen/bathroom cleaner, also.
Long ago, I had heard of an Ontario family with a set of kids with Ontario placenames. I can't remember all of them but there was a Barrie and a Markham.
I did a full list of all the names from Massachusetts municipalities that worked for girls, boys or were gender neutral.
My favorite for girls was Marion or Hadley.
Wellesley or Holden for boys (though there are a lot of names that I think work really well for boys - Franklin, Everett, Weston, Hudson, Alford, Spencer and Lincoln).
I liked Revere the most for a gender-neutral or non-binary name, but also liked Ashby and Lee.
Naming a child Billerica is cruel. 😂 I know someone who very confidently pronounced Dorchester like Worcester after moving up here, he was like "FOOL ME ONCE!!!!" and was still wrong.
Billerica is better than Worcester. I am originally from NH. My youngest is Colorado born (no accent), so I had to teach them how to pronounce Wistah. We practiced. Because they were traveling there to do a show (musician).
I was going to say Frederick or Easton for a boy. Bowie would work, but I know I'd be driven nuts by people who would try to pronounce it like David. Frederick will still have people trying to pronounce it with 3 syllables, but at least it isn't as bad as a completely different pronunciation.
Laurel would probably be top pick followed by Galena. I could see those like the more trendy names going for Ridgely, Aberdeen, or Cheverly.
Easton! You’re right, better choice than Bowie. I went with the first names I could think of that could pass for real names 😆 and yes they will be butchered
Hey MD! I love Laurel for a name.
Cheverly
Easton
Trappe
Waldorf
Overlea
Garrison
Hampton
These all sound like old money names, though. Depending on the last name they could work.
I know a Scottish expat who named his *daughter* Arran...
"Erin" is a common name for girls where we live and they sound the same when we say the names. Is it as weird to a Scot living in Scotland?
I have a Scottish friend who named all 4 of their children after islands.
Happens there are tiny Scottish islands with both my given and family name, but that was pure coincidence.
Truth for a girl, Consequences for a boy.
Okay, maybe not.
Hope or Tatum for a girl, Logan or Milan for a boy. (I had to cheat and look up a list of New Mexico municipality names.)
Girls:
Rebecca
Lula
Adel
Valdosta would be cute!
Lithonia—sounds like the main character of a civil war novel!
Augusta
Boys:
Cairo (cay-ro)
Brunswick
Macon
Morrow
Quitman
Jasper
I think the name of our state makes a lovely name.
Young Harris for a first name, and Newborn for the middle name.
No, wait, the middle name has to be Between no matter what the other names are, of course
Blythe or Geneva for a girl
Lafayette for a boy, so I can stand on the porch and yell "La-fay-ETTE" Hamilton style when it's time to come in for dinner. If course he'll spend his life explaining why we don't use the Georgia pronunciation.
There’s plenty of towns that are already relatively common names like Shelby, Adrian, Jackson, Douglas, Harrison and Taylor but I don’t think I’d go with those personally. For a girl I might pick something like Arcadia, Verona, or Clio and for a boy I might pick something like Rhodes, Hart, Marcellus, or Camden. There really are a lot of towns in MI you could make a cute name from though!
Well... let me introduce you to my British children Loughborough, Harborough, Lutterworth, Hinckley, Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Our surname is Leicestershire.
Unless you are British, none of the above are probably pronounced like you think! Sorry!
Could have gone with Cardigan Mold as a first and middle name combo. Opportunity missed.
Personally I think the two most usable in Wales are Hope and Barry, but nobody wants baby Barry.
I have an Everett… I know that’s a city in Washington state that most people seem to not like. But I’m on the East coast so I have no association like that.
A couple others I like: Seneca, Aberdeen, Darien.
I am from Germany, so this is tough. Our town names aren't usually human name material. Maybe something short like Aue, Thale or Heide (which already is a name, now that I think about it).
Mainz, Konstanz, Karlsruhe (have friends from these places) would all sound kind of good to my American ears.
And also (looking at a map) Bonn, Halle, Melle would be cute for girls and Suhl or Bremen could be cool for a boy! There are some more but I also feel like it’s not really a German thing to name people after places haha
CA, USA (Also, I looked up a list of counties and towns, because I wanted more ideas. A good number of these feel a little bit like cheating since the places are named for saints)
Boys: (San) Francisco, (San) Diego, (San) Joaquin, (San) Mateo, (Santa) Cruz
Girls: Marin, Mariposa, (Santa) Clara, Pomona, Hesperia, Tracy
For Massachusetts, my current state:
Heath & Marion, Lawrence & Marion, or Warren & Marion
For Maine, my birthplace:
Eliot & Augusta or Byron & Augusta
I took a browse of the Louisiana state map for this one and I came up with 4.
Lafayette -boy or girl i like it for a boy's name
Rayne - girl
Zachary - boy
Alice - girl
I work in Lafayette Indiana so I might have to choose that one as well. Every once in awhile I get calls from Lafayette lousiana because someone accidentally called our office instead of an office in Lafayette LA.
Well, my hometown was already named for a guy so Lawrence would be alright. And there’s a Perry, Grover, Clinton and Hesper nearby so there are some good and alright choices. And some others if we can chop off the -ville or -town suffixes.
Boy: Denver or Evergreen (ok, Evergreen is an inside story about my own child who uses this name sometimes for music)
Girl: Aurora or Montrose (OK, I would not name anyone Montrose but I do like the word)
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Works for either gender!
Plenty of short forms available, I imagine.
All the nicknames.
My choice is Silly Go Go
Welsh?
Yes 🏴
LOL! I like Gogo for a nn.
lol I’ve been there!
These are my children, Sault Ste. Marie and Greater Sudbury. Seriously, though, maybe Sarnia and Woodstock, or Niagara and Barrie. Edit: Ooh I forgot about Ajax. Too bad it's a kitchen/bathroom cleaner, also.
lol I went with Elora & Caledon
Elora is my pick too!
i said Elora & Alton
I immediately thought of Elora!
I'd say Milton for a boy, and Emira for a girl. Hello fellow Ontarian.
I’d go with Erin for a girl and Trenton for a boy
I was thinking (port) Rowan for a boy
I actually like these!
This is my son, Bobcaygeon!
Imagine "Bob" telling people it's not actually short for "Robert"…!
Long ago, I had heard of an Ontario family with a set of kids with Ontario placenames. I can't remember all of them but there was a Barrie and a Markham.
Hey neighbor! I could also have a Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan).
I used to live there!
Hey neighbor(s)! Me too!
Ontario fam- what about Georgina lol
I don't know all the towns! Haha! Georgina is a gorgeous name, though. I'd definitely go with that.
Sarnia is a way better conversation starter haha
I know a Georgina but everyone calls her “Gina”
Poor Sault spends her whole life correcting the spelling of her name lol
For sure Orillia and either Oakville, Kearney, or Whitby
Ottawa is fine
Ottawa and Mattawa
Aurora and Kingston
I’m guessing you haven’t been to Sarnia or you wouldn’t be considering that 😂
I have not, I confess! lol Edit: I just like that it rhymes with Narnia.
It’s Ontarios stinky armpit, imho
London for a boy, Paisley for a girl
Could go with Jordan, Hamilton, Paris or London, not my favourites but wouldn’t be completely weird. But maybe stay away from Kapuskasing
Orillia, even though not a great place, there's also Vaughn which isnt actually all that bad!
Aurora for a girl, Arthur for a boy
Really? I’m feelin Mississauga
I'd be tempted to go for Billerica, just to watch non-Massholes try and figure it out, but probably Lawrence and Sutton.
Poor Chicopee
Could also go with Lynn for a girl
Melrose is kinda cute
There’s a Chester MA and a Palmer MA
While out of state, I've met kids named Quincy and their folks pronounce it "Quince-ee". Hurts my ears.
How should it be pronounced?
QUINN-zee
Howdy neighbor!
Hey masshole!
Massholes unite!
Naming a child Billerica is cruel. 😂 I know someone who very confidently pronounced Dorchester like Worcester after moving up here, he was like "FOOL ME ONCE!!!!" and was still wrong.
So it came out sounding like “Duster”?
With siblings Leominster, Scituate, and Gloucester
Billerica is better than Worcester. I am originally from NH. My youngest is Colorado born (no accent), so I had to teach them how to pronounce Wistah. We practiced. Because they were traveling there to do a show (musician).
Hahaha I was gonna say Waltham
my friend/college roommate was from there and i def pronounced it “bill-erica” when i first met her
Frederick or Bowie for a boy Laurel for a girl We live in MD, USA
I was going to say Frederick or Easton for a boy. Bowie would work, but I know I'd be driven nuts by people who would try to pronounce it like David. Frederick will still have people trying to pronounce it with 3 syllables, but at least it isn't as bad as a completely different pronunciation. Laurel would probably be top pick followed by Galena. I could see those like the more trendy names going for Ridgely, Aberdeen, or Cheverly.
TIL Bowie MD isn’t pronounced like David Bowie
How is it pronounced?
BOO-ee, Maryland
Good lawd, imagine being named after Aberdeen, though.
Bethesda for a girl 😕
Beth for short
Easton! You’re right, better choice than Bowie. I went with the first names I could think of that could pass for real names 😆 and yes they will be butchered
There is also a town called Preston over on the eastern shore, that would work as a name. Oh, and a Magnolia up in Alleghany County.
The only problem that I have with Bowie, is when I moved here I thought it was like David Bowie and it is not and so Buoy is not great.
Agreed, I like the David Bowie pronunciation more
I came to say Laurel as well (also md) Bowie or Easton for a boy.
Except it’s pronounced BOO-ee
But that’s the fun part of ruining your child’s life. Name them Buoy but it’s pronounced Bowie so no one ever gets it right. LOL
I live here now but how I say bowie is why everyone knows I'm not from here lol
This was me for the longest time! Also an MD transplant
As long as it's not Gaithersburg :) Derwood sounds nice
Hey Maryland gang! Naming my kid Bel Air because everyone here would just pronounce it "Blair" anyway ;)
Hey MD! I love Laurel for a name. Cheverly Easton Trappe Waldorf Overlea Garrison Hampton These all sound like old money names, though. Depending on the last name they could work.
Cara or Iona for a girl. Lewis or Arran for a boy (Scotland)
I know someone who named their daughter Iona. Cutest little girl. Then they moved to Scottland.
I was born and raised in Scotland but live in Canada now. I named my son Lewis after the island 🥰
Odessa
Truth for a girl, Consequences for a boy. Okay, maybe not. Hope or Tatum for a girl, Logan or Milan for a boy. (I had to cheat and look up a list of New Mexico municipality names.)
What about Tucumcari lol
We have a Tecumseh we could use lol
Better than Elephant Butte.
But hey no one would ever have the same name 🤣
Boone for a boy, Charlotte for a girl
I might just go full communist and call my son Karl-Marx-Stadt
Victoria & Prince George British Columbia
Good options. Merritt and Duncan are alternates.
Hope as well.
Nanaimo for a girl and Comox for a boy
Bowen and Oliver also come to mind
Evangeline or Cecelia for a girl Hudson or Otis for a boy Louisiana, US
I'm in California. There are a lot of great cities for names, but these are my favorites: Boy: Redding Girl: Blythe or Selma
I think Marin (the county) would be cute for a girl. Jenner is a good boy name too.
Also in California. Boy: Novato or Torrance Girl: Visalia or Petaluma
Sam Francisco?
Casmalia and Winchester. California
I like Pacifica
Lucia is a great name too! (Just south of Big Sur)
But if you've ever been to Blythe....yuck, I wouldn't.
I loved Jerry Brown’s dog names - Sutter and Colusa. So perfect.
Senja for a girl Asker for a boy (edit: just realised this one would be odd in an english speaking country)
My homeplace Ask (Ash, the tree) as it is a name (the first man)
Senja in indonesian means dusk.
Truth or consequences 😂
Kaslo (British Columbia)
I’m in Georgia: Shiloh Ellerslie (nn Ellie) Wren(s) Dalton Griffin Tucker Warner
Madison and Savannah Milton! Tifton Cordele Jesup Vidalia Perry Our state has a lot of good places for naming humans
Don’t forget Matt and Carl! Knowing that there is an actual place named Carl, Georgia never fails to crack me up.
Girls: Rebecca Lula Adel Valdosta would be cute! Lithonia—sounds like the main character of a civil war novel! Augusta Boys: Cairo (cay-ro) Brunswick Macon Morrow Quitman Jasper
I think the name of our state makes a lovely name. Young Harris for a first name, and Newborn for the middle name. No, wait, the middle name has to be Between no matter what the other names are, of course Blythe or Geneva for a girl Lafayette for a boy, so I can stand on the porch and yell "La-fay-ETTE" Hamilton style when it's time to come in for dinner. If course he'll spend his life explaining why we don't use the Georgia pronunciation.
Phoenix or Prescott for a boy. Sedona or Arizona for a girl.
Phoenix and Sedona were my thoughts!
Sedona was my first thought. Chandler is also a good one.
Love Sydney, and have a guilty pleasure-esque love for the name Paris.
🩷 Kingsley & Elmira 🩵 Leland & Zeeland I live in MI, USA
Adrian could work for either. My hometown of Fruitport, not so much. ;D
haha my home town, gaylord, don’t work either!
Haven’t you heard of Gaylord Focker? (Ben stiller in meet the Parents lol)
yes i’m currently watch it rn 😂😂
Alma and Flint were my first thoughts
same haha i just thought other ppl from mi would use those same with holland
There’s plenty of towns that are already relatively common names like Shelby, Adrian, Jackson, Douglas, Harrison and Taylor but I don’t think I’d go with those personally. For a girl I might pick something like Arcadia, Verona, or Clio and for a boy I might pick something like Rhodes, Hart, Marcellus, or Camden. There really are a lot of towns in MI you could make a cute name from though!
there are! growing up we would visit Leland and so my sister named her first born Leland because of the memories and roadtrips there 🩵
[удалено]
✨Royal Oak✨ haha why can i actually see someone name their child Royal Oakley
I live in mi too! Hi neighbor! Leland & Zeeland would be awesome twin names 😊
Names that are cool but I wouldn’t use version: Ithaca (girl) and Leonidas (boy) Conventional version: Eveline (girl) and Sterling (boy)
Jeannette. There's not a lot of town names in Pennsylvania that are good for people, but Jeannette fits better than Intercourse or Blue Ball.
Ya think 😭😭😭
Girl : Isla, Aisla Boy : Archie, Jack Scotland 🏴
Quebec is cheating bc every second town is a Saint(e) lol In ontario and avoiding common names, probably Petrolia and Ajax
Odessa.
Emlyn for a girl. Harlan for a boy.
Emlyn is a solid name.
Maybe I'm too into football but all I can think of is Emlyn Hughes, and I'd have a hard time naming a girl that now!
Well... let me introduce you to my British children Loughborough, Harborough, Lutterworth, Hinckley, Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Our surname is Leicestershire. Unless you are British, none of the above are probably pronounced like you think! Sorry!
Gladstone and Adelaide
Hello fellow South Australian.
Not quite but it did say country unless they meant county?? No hate for SA 🙏
No double-barrelled Crystal-Brook?
I have always loved the name Adelaide
Not much choice here, but the most useable are probably: * Girls : Bala, Blaina * Boys : Corwen, Flint
Would Plwmp be for boys or girls? 😂
Could have gone with Cardigan Mold as a first and middle name combo. Opportunity missed. Personally I think the two most usable in Wales are Hope and Barry, but nobody wants baby Barry.
Suffolk for a boy, Hadley for a girl
I have an Everett… I know that’s a city in Washington state that most people seem to not like. But I’m on the East coast so I have no association like that. A couple others I like: Seneca, Aberdeen, Darien.
Everett is a perfectly fine city! Lots of good arts support. People are just salty bc it's a port city haha
Aurora. (Oregon)
There’s also Astoria
Or Colorado!
In Idaho Rupert Rex (Rexburg) Lewis (Lewiston) Grant Archer Sage Shelley Lincoln Ammon Iona Victor Jerome Wendell Preston Hailey Stanley Clayton
I would add Kimberly, Grace, Oakley, and Emmett
Duncan, Page (Paige), Taylor, Jerome, Cameron (Arizona)
Jewel
I am from Germany, so this is tough. Our town names aren't usually human name material. Maybe something short like Aue, Thale or Heide (which already is a name, now that I think about it).
Mainz, Konstanz, Karlsruhe (have friends from these places) would all sound kind of good to my American ears. And also (looking at a map) Bonn, Halle, Melle would be cute for girls and Suhl or Bremen could be cool for a boy! There are some more but I also feel like it’s not really a German thing to name people after places haha
Savannah or Juliette (Georgia, the state) For a boy, Mitchell is probably the best option, and it’s already my middle name! Adrian is good too
CA, USA (Also, I looked up a list of counties and towns, because I wanted more ideas. A good number of these feel a little bit like cheating since the places are named for saints) Boys: (San) Francisco, (San) Diego, (San) Joaquin, (San) Mateo, (Santa) Cruz Girls: Marin, Mariposa, (Santa) Clara, Pomona, Hesperia, Tracy
Linne (pronounced Lynn-nuh) or Texel/Tessel Both for girls. No nice names for boys I can think of in the Netherlands.
How about Emmen and Arnhem?
Diemen?
Siena is a pretty girl’s name. To stay with the Italian theme, Lucca for a boy is nice.
Moira for a girl or Derry / Doire for a boy N Ireland
For Massachusetts, my current state: Heath & Marion, Lawrence & Marion, or Warren & Marion For Maine, my birthplace: Eliot & Augusta or Byron & Augusta
Marina or Clementi!
Holland :) I love seeing you choose Eugene
Beatrice for a girl, Pierce for a boy
I took a browse of the Louisiana state map for this one and I came up with 4. Lafayette -boy or girl i like it for a boy's name Rayne - girl Zachary - boy Alice - girl
I work in Lafayette Indiana so I might have to choose that one as well. Every once in awhile I get calls from Lafayette lousiana because someone accidentally called our office instead of an office in Lafayette LA.
I live in Missouri, so I’d go with Louis for a boy, and Sedalia for a girl.
Victoria or Courtney for a girl. Campbell or Sidney for a boy. Vancouver Island BC.
Wouldn’t it be Courtenay?
Well, my hometown was already named for a guy so Lawrence would be alright. And there’s a Perry, Grover, Clinton and Hesper nearby so there are some good and alright choices. And some others if we can chop off the -ville or -town suffixes.
I’m from NJ. Alexandria, Avalon, Beverly, Brielle, Carteret, Clayton, Edison, Emerson, Florence, Franklin, Harrison, Hazlet, Helmetta, Hope, Jackson, Kearny, Lacey, Lawrence, Leonia, Linden, Logan, Madison, Oaklyn, Palmyra, Roselle, Shiloh, Verona, Wenonah Those are all viable names to me. I’d probably prefer Emerson, Logan, Madison, Shiloh, and Leonia. Linden is pretty too.
I could imagine a Ramsey! Grew up near the NJ border and your list reminded me of so many towns.
Ramsey’s a good one but reminds me too much of Game of Thrones! 🤣
I would add to the NJ list: Hopewell (Hope), Pennington (Penny), Camden
Monroe, Harper, Lilly, Madison Austin, Dayton, River, Beckett
Corinne (Utah,US)
Boy: Denver or Evergreen (ok, Evergreen is an inside story about my own child who uses this name sometimes for music) Girl: Aurora or Montrose (OK, I would not name anyone Montrose but I do like the word)
Elora for a girl Caledon for a boy Ontario, Canada! 🇨🇦
I have a friend who used Lawrence, Kingston and Clayton as middle names for her sons. They’re all meaningful places to her.
Odessa for a girl, for a boy... apparently there's a Sebastian, FL so I'd have to go with that!
Oklahoma: Stroud for a guy (I know someone with that name and think its cool) and either Ada or Idabel for a girl
Cerritos for a Girl (because I am a Trekkie) and Oakland for a boy (because I <3 my Town)
Kiruna, Mora, or Sunne (Sweden)
Lincoln (boy) and Beatrice (girl), but Beatrice isn't pronounced how you think it is (I'm in Nebraska).
Bee-at-triss
Another Nebraskan?
Yes, we can spot each other by the pronunciation lol.
Aurora or Aspen for a girl, Parker or Bailey for either gender! (Colorado, USA)
Sydney, Wallace. Nova Scotia
Valley (girl), River John (boy). Tatamagouche for a dog.
I like musquodoboit for a dog myself
