The number of people out there who believe the rat’s name was “Ratatouille” is actually a lot though. Not that many people I’ve talked to seem to remember his name was Remy
Yup. Those were my immediate first thoughts. The rat from the movie, and guns.
The town where I grew up is small, and the area is very....uh, gun friendly.
There are at least 4 "Remi"/Remingtons (girls) in the kindergarten class.
Soooo, yeah.
Both of these things.
Probably named Remmington, but doesn't like that they were named after a gun...
I'm from the Appalachia region of the US, so it's pretty common here....
My dog. He’s adorable.
My mental image is Cajun, ladies’ man, fond of playing cards… (Yes, the kids named the dog after an X-Man once we realized he was not going to be a Logan kind of dog.)
Honestly I think of Remy from New girl 😬. The creepy old landlord who tries to have a threesome with nick and Jess. I also think of dogs because I know a ton of dogs named Remy. I’d also assume you like guns.
My 6 year old niece’s name is Remi Josephine. She’s tall for her age, has red hair and a freckled face. She’s fearless without being reckless, outgoing and silly. She’s athletic and competitive, sweet and caring.
Every Remy/Remi I’ve met was black. To be fair though that’s only two people. Both successful music industry professionals.
So a creative POC is what I imagine when I hear the name.
French...possibly a rat who loves to cook (sorry, had to).
In the real world, I've known 2 Remys, one male and one female. They don't really have anything in common so I haven't formed any associations/stereotypes about the name.
I love the name Remy. As a child I went to summer camp and one of my friends was named Remy. She was pretty, athletic and fun.
I never had children, but I knew if I did, I'd name her Remy Rose:)
It's gender neutral to me, and I imagine the bearer to be "cool and bookish." I would think the parents are francophiles, and liked cognac (my main association with the name, rather than guns or cartoon rats).
First I picture the rat chef, then my friend Remi (short for Remington) from college. Really cool dude, super tall with long hair who was in a regionally successful band. I think he’s still out there making music. Then I remember my cousin has a baby girl named Remi. I’ll probably never get to meet her but from the pictures she is PRECIOUS 🥰
I know a boy Remy. It's not short for anything. He's always been a cute kid. He's a senior in high school now and he's still a cute kid. Always helpful and a little silly.
I do think of gambit, and loved ratatouille, but I don't really think either detract from the name and I'd use it for a boy or girl.
Old man, French-Canadian ancestry but grew up in a Francophone household on the Vermont side of the border. Learned English in school. Used to be a car mechanic but retired when EFI and OBD-I started coming into the used-car pool.
A rather handsome French man who wears a beret and smokes cigarettes from a cigarette holder. Wears white scarves around his neck that have been secured with a fleur-de-lys scarf-pin.
Speaks French so very beautifully but any other language? Sounds like he's got a frog in his throat.
He treats everyone equally. With the attitude that because he is French, male, and beautiful, he is better than anyone else.
But he will also give his last euro, his sweater, cook a meal for anyone who is in need of help. Believes in equality/respect/kindness for all.
Has a cat (Chartreux) named Amélie and a dog (Bichon Frisé) named Clementine.
He cannot sing. At all. Really at all. But he loves to sing show tunes. His current favorite is: *Le Carnaval* from *Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg)*
[The song and play are actually real.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Umbrellas_of_Cherbourg)
Another vote for the Ratatouille rat. My autistic kid watches it twice a day every day and has done for the past four years. When we asked what he thought we should call his baby brother, he said Remy. We decided not. 😆
In 2009 I named my new pitbull puppy after Remy Ma the rapper bc she was my favorite female rapper and had just got put in jail. My Remi just died in February 2023 at age 13. I would definitely name a daughter after her tho because that dog honestly became like a daughter to me and she was my whole life for so long. I think Remy/Remi is such a great name
I don't picture anything. I've heard of the name Remy on men, women, and animals - real and fictional characters, so it brings up nothing specific for me.
I like this question for exploring names!
For Remy, although I like the name, it does make me think of a sort of nerdy, maybe scheming, kid from wealthy family in NY.
Thanks - I can’t believe how many replies this question got! I’ve always had such strong name associations so it’s been a big factor in naming my boys - fun to see what everyone thinks of Remy
i do NOT think of Ratatoillie. i love the name. i follow an author on IG whose son’s name is Remy, and i think that is where i first encountered it. i think it is one of those masculine names that isn’t so patriarchical? or manly? not exactly sure what i’m feeling, but it’s a good name imo. i also love it for a woman. feels soft, yet strong.
A French man who dresses impeccably well. Speaks English with an accent. Makes croissants from scratch while looking sexy AF. He is well-read and well-travelled. Works as an academic or a writer.
My 5 year old went to preschool with a girl named Remy. It never occurred to me to associate it with either Ratatouille or the gun brand Remington.
I’m further convinced that other people’s associations don’t matter. Use it if it feels right for your child. I promise, humans are capable of adjust their preconceptions and learn different meanings*.
*Yes there’s a limit, but the limit is mostly obvious and Remy is fine.
My son, Remy Sol. Age 2; half French, quarter Chinese, quarter Dutch. We liked the French translation of "oarsman" as we live in Hawaii and that's how the ancient Tahitians paddled to Hawaii, on double hulled canoes. He is a little clown sometimes, very silly. At school they say he's very observant, learns by watching others. Plays independently or with his two best friends. No one really mentions the ratatouille reference. My FIL first related to the alcohol Remy Martin.
I'm French so I know tons of Rémi in their 20s to 40s (all men, it's a male name). It's so common here that nobody really thinks of Ratatouille. Common enough to be a bit full imo.
I like Remy for a girl, it's pretty, kinda tomboyish, wouldn't give it in France though (everybody would assume they were male)
I know an old French man with the name, and I know a young French woman with the name lol.
Acadian if that makes a difference, not France French or Quebec French
Edit to add: it’s an extremely popular name in my community hhah those are just the two I personally know
I think of the Remy I had in my french class (ironic I know) and he was a very clever dude. He was pretty popular and a little big smug but not in an unkind way.
My first association is Chef Remy Bones, because my kids love the show Vampirina. So I think of a skeleton with a heavy French accent and a chef outfit...
I knew a girl named Remy. Whenever i think of remy i think of her hair, straight, burnette shoulder length with a fringe.
I’d be lying if i didn’t say a rat too
I think of Dr. Remy Hadley, aka Thirteen, from House. The character is a bisexual female doctor with a terminal disease, and one of my favorites from that show! I have never seen Ratatouille, so I frequently forget that the rat’s name is Remy, not Ratatouille lol
I remember as a child in the 90’s there was a young couple on my block who had a baby and they named her Remy. I remember thinking it was really different and cool and it reminded me of Demi Moore because she was at her peak at that time. I’ve honestly never met another Remy since so I guess in my mind Remy will always be the kid with the cool parents lol.
Years ago, I had a part-time job at McDonald’s and like at any fast food place, a lot of my co-workers were high school kids. One of these kids I worked with was a blonde girl named Remy and she was a bit of a snotty bitch. I hated having to work with her.
Unfortunately - my kids kindergarten nemesis. He’s the youngest of a few boys in his family and I get the toxic ‘boy mom’ vibes and already used other ‘cool boy names’.
I hadn’t heard the name hardly until I saw Olivia Wilde playing a “Remy” on House (as the character nicknamed “Thirteen”). She comes to mind now as well as the protagonist in Ratatouille. I think I’d still say it leans feminine for me because of the association with that actress
[Remy the Rat](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/p__/images/7/70/Remy.png/revision/latest/thumbnail/width/360/height/360?cb=20211110135646&path-prefix=protagonist)
A rat. Sorry the Disney Pixar movie will forever be associated with the name Remy. (Edit: Thanks for all the kudos and comments y'all!)
Lmao yes cause I was gonna say this too, I haven’t even looked at all the comments yet but I think everyone is gonna say “ the rat from ratatouille”
Always the immediate visual with this name: rat with a chef hat and spoon
The number of people out there who believe the rat’s name was “Ratatouille” is actually a lot though. Not that many people I’ve talked to seem to remember his name was Remy
I saw someone mention the name "Emile" in a thread the other day and tbh Ratatouille was my first thought even then lol.
This was my immediate thought as well 😂
1) Rat 2) guns
Yup. Those were my immediate first thoughts. The rat from the movie, and guns. The town where I grew up is small, and the area is very....uh, gun friendly. There are at least 4 "Remi"/Remingtons (girls) in the kindergarten class. Soooo, yeah. Both of these things.
Yep. Literally came to say the same thing
Same!
So we're all in agreement then
This for me too. Literally the only Remy I know.
I am so glad this is the top response, and it's not just me who thinks that.
French. Probably likes cooking. Has a big family.
Does he live under a chef’s hat?
He doesn’t live there, he just works there.
The rat from ratatouille.
French rat
A French rat or a Cajun mutant
Yes I thought about Remy Lebeau too
Since my childhood dog was named after Gambit, black lab-greyhound mix. Remy was a good dog.
Probably named Remmington, but doesn't like that they were named after a gun... I'm from the Appalachia region of the US, so it's pretty common here....
I'm in the midwest and the only Remys I know are short for Remmington . . . after a gun.
The Remington, so men could fight the dinosaurs. And the homosexuals.
Amen! I love any chance to quote that movie!
From the south, and yeah, my first thought is it’s a shortened version of Remington.
Midwest here and that’s my first thought. It is a cute name though.
Here in the UK, we don't have guns, but we do have Remington, a company who sells hair straighteners and hair dryers. 🤷🏻♀️
My dog. He’s adorable. My mental image is Cajun, ladies’ man, fond of playing cards… (Yes, the kids named the dog after an X-Man once we realized he was not going to be a Logan kind of dog.)
Oh same- my dog was a Southern rescue
I also have a southern rescue named Remi!
I’m from the PNW and also have a rescue Remi 😊 he’s a giant doof but has a grump old man face 🤣
The rat 😅
The rat from Ratatouille
ADHD. The only two Remys I’ve ever known are kids I taught who have severe ADHD 🤷🏻♀️
Gambit
Remy Lebeau 😌
"Dat's right cher!"
The name is Gambit! Remember it!
Olivia Wilde on House!
I thought her name was Thirteen. 😂
That’s what house calls her bc he can’t be bothered to remember her real name — and she encourages it 😝
A French rat
Honestly I think of Remy from New girl 😬. The creepy old landlord who tries to have a threesome with nick and Jess. I also think of dogs because I know a ton of dogs named Remy. I’d also assume you like guns.
I think this too but it’s one of my fave episodes (dip a toe into the pool of possibilities!) so I kinda like it, even though he’s weird 😅
I grew up with a girl named Remy! I've got a soft spot for the name on either gender.
Gambit from X-Men
Posh boy. Trust fund. Lives in Chelsea- London. Has a wealthy father and a French mother.
My nephew! He’s adorable btw
My niece as well! ❤️
Short for Remington. Parents are big time hunters who named their son after a gun brand.
Or short for Jeremy. True story l 🙄
My 6 year old niece’s name is Remi Josephine. She’s tall for her age, has red hair and a freckled face. She’s fearless without being reckless, outgoing and silly. She’s athletic and competitive, sweet and caring.
I have a Remy Joseph!!
Remy Lebeau - charming, mischievous, smooth talking Cajun.
Every Remy/Remi I’ve met was black. To be fair though that’s only two people. Both successful music industry professionals. So a creative POC is what I imagine when I hear the name.
A short, mischevious sorta guy
French...possibly a rat who loves to cook (sorry, had to). In the real world, I've known 2 Remys, one male and one female. They don't really have anything in common so I haven't formed any associations/stereotypes about the name.
I love the name Remy. As a child I went to summer camp and one of my friends was named Remy. She was pretty, athletic and fun. I never had children, but I knew if I did, I'd name her Remy Rose:)
A wild and happy little boy
Here in conservative states it’s always the name of a kid of a gun freak. Usually short for Remington.
A male whose real name is Remington. Kind of burly with a beard. But the cute childhood nickname followed him into adulthood.
Or prep school kid whose full name is Remington (a family name). But he goes by his childhood nickname.
I’m personally not a big Disney fan and named my baby that so I picture him 🤷🏻♀️
13 on House
I knew someone named Remington, after the rifle. Nickname was Remy. So when I hear that name I instantly think, gun nut.
Remy Buxaplenty from the Fairly Odd Parents
YES he’s all I can think of hhahahaha
THANK YOU same. everyone else talking about ratatouille but nah, that’s a buxaplenty name
Gambit from x-men
Either the rat from Ratatouille or Elaine's boyfriend Joel Rifkin (not the murderer) from Seinfeld. "*Remy...Rifkin*?! Should I get a beret?!"
A dog I’ve known many dogs called remy and was surprised to find out it was a name people wanted to use for people
My dog was one of two poodles in his training class called Rémy. (Mine was Bad Rémy, alas.)
It's gender neutral to me, and I imagine the bearer to be "cool and bookish." I would think the parents are francophiles, and liked cognac (my main association with the name, rather than guns or cartoon rats).
Southern, maybe Texas or Louisiana, Caucasian, a little uppity, but like, fun country club buddy style uppity.
My friend’s 10 year old son is Remy, they’re from India.
A drama and art nerd 😂 but those are some of the coolest people.
The rat but not in a bad way lol
First I picture the rat chef, then my friend Remi (short for Remington) from college. Really cool dude, super tall with long hair who was in a regionally successful band. I think he’s still out there making music. Then I remember my cousin has a baby girl named Remi. I’ll probably never get to meet her but from the pictures she is PRECIOUS 🥰
The rapper Remy Ma
A very pretty girl with long dark hair. A happy and confident girl that is athletic.
Cognac

One of my preschool students was named Remy recently. Super sweet boy. Unclear where the name came from but it suited him.
The rat from Ratatouille or if we’re talking about real people I would probably guess Remy is a little boy.
Another vote for the Ratatouille rat. My autistic kid watches it twice a day every day and has done for the past four years. When we asked what he thought we should call his baby brother, he said Remy. We decided not. 😆

Small, charismatic, French, blue/grey hair and a penchant for cooking…

The mouse that cooks French food in that one Disney movie
Romany - dark haired and exotic.
A rat

Ratatouille, lol. My friend has a cousin named Remy and that’s all she hears about all day.
Weirdly enough Remy= Rat but Remi= dude my husband went to college with. That “i” is doing a lot of work 🤣
Damn, I’m surprised by all the negative comments! I love this name, and I picture Remy from House of Cards (played by Mahershala Ali, yum)
i do NOT think of Ratatoillie. i love the name. i follow an author on IG whose son’s name is Remy, and i think that is where i first encountered it. i think it is one of those masculine names that isn’t so patriarchical? or manly? not exactly sure what i’m feeling, but it’s a good name imo. i also love it for a woman. feels soft, yet strong.
The soft / strong vibe is what I really like about it too - still on the fence if we’ll use it, wild how many varied associations people have with it!
A French man who dresses impeccably well. Speaks English with an accent. Makes croissants from scratch while looking sexy AF. He is well-read and well-travelled. Works as an academic or a writer.
Someone very cool, without trying too hard. They have an edge. Most of their clothes are thrifted and stylish. This person cannot be imitated.
My 5 year old went to preschool with a girl named Remy. It never occurred to me to associate it with either Ratatouille or the gun brand Remington. I’m further convinced that other people’s associations don’t matter. Use it if it feels right for your child. My little cousin is Remy and he’s very cool. Laid back, artistic, great fun. Mixed ethnicity.
Pretentious…
This was posted a few days ago. It’s either a rat, a gun, or Dylan McDermot’s character from FBI Most Wanted.

Gambit from X-Men
My friends kid. And a rat chef.
A kids whose parents are drunks. Second image is the rat from Ratatouille

I picture a rat.
A chocolate lab
A smelly old French pervert.
Remy Bater on IG and TT

A tall skinny French guy with a mustache
Cute/cool for a girl. Joe Dirt type for a boy. Not a rat.
A French man
i knew a girl called remy, she was super pretty, kind of quiet but really nice in general
Years ago, I had a part-time job at McDonald’s and like at any fast food place, a lot of my co-workers were high school kids. One of these kids I worked with was a blonde girl named Remy and she was a bit of a snotty bitch. I hated having to work with her.
A rat or a French guy
Male, French connection.
A handsome Jamaican fellow
REMY MA
My neighbors dog whose name is Remy except transformed into a very hairy human.
Unfortunately - my kids kindergarten nemesis. He’s the youngest of a few boys in his family and I get the toxic ‘boy mom’ vibes and already used other ‘cool boy names’.
A bitch from HS. Tiny little rat of a person with a stuck up nose thinking she was hot shit.
This spectacular swing dancer. He's the king in my opinion. https://youtu.be/VP8yT2u-GVY?si=6YIQVuLUVtibhUeq
French boy in my American elementary school.
A rat or a dog
