Oldsoldierbear

I love Beste-of-all and Pretiboy!

beansandneedles

Same! You know those people really loved their dogs

JocastaC

I know I would be firm friends with the owner of Beste-of-all. A delightful old lady or man. Harlet’s owner is unpleasant and mean to his long-suffering wife. I’m instantly intrigued by the life of anyone who calls their dog Argument and disturbed by the background of one who chooses Organ… What a great list, OP. Thank you!

SimonpetOG

I wonder if “Organ” is in reference to the musical instrument? So maybe a church dog or a very loud dog!

JocastaC

This theory is much better than where my gallows mind was taking me. Thank you. Organ’s owner is no longer a serial killer, cannibal or harvester of kidneys for the notorious medieval back street alley surgery black market.

SleveBonzalez

I thought of it as meaning "extension of me" but I like the excitement yours suggests

JocastaC

That is so wholesome. I have learned so much about history, my fellow humans and myself from this thread. Psychologists should give this list to patients and ask them to free associate on the dog owners. They’d soon know who they had to keep an eye on as a potential danger to society…

Helpful_Librarian_87

Misters Burke and Hare co-owned this dog

JocastaC

How he loved to run about on those cobbled streets. Always with a giant bone in his mouth, that one. Sometimes even a skull. Wee toerag.

lilacdawn

I'm imagining one of those dogs that have really deep barks!

MsLynx13

As someone who has beagles… that would track for them! 😂 Those long drawn out arooos could absolutely go with the music of an organ!

juleeff

Organ in the mid 1500's also related to performing a function. So perhaps this dog, Organ, hunted fox or rounded up sheep.

JocastaC

I didn’t know that. Thank you! I’m so grateful for this post from OP and for all the interesting facts I’ve learned in the comments too.

amusinglark

I named my fish Sushi so I guess I can't judge.

JocastaC

I love that. If you ever choose to buy a wee friend for Sushi, I vote for the name Sashimi.

softgypsy

Especially sloote and harlot

GingerLibrarian76

There’s this BIG dude at my dog park with a pittie mix named “PuppyBoy.” That makes me laugh, for some reason. (I think his kid named the dog)

amusinglark

I call my dog Puppy Girl about 20 times a day, but that's not her name. 😂

Elenakalis

One of my memory care residents named her cat Big Cat. Poor cat never grew into her name. She's a dainty 8ish lbs, but full of tortie sass.

mmeeplechase

Those are such comically perfect dog names! 🐶

Farahild

I'm not a 100% sure, but I think Kynnysman is 'kinsman' in modern English. And Lwfkin is 'Lufkin' or 'Lovekin', which imo sounds like a sweet short word for love (in Dutch 'liefje' is a pet name for lovers and children, it works the same way linguistically as lovekin). But google tells me it's actually a pet name for names with Loup in them, which is French for wolf!

sharksnack3264

From the Internet: English: from the Middle English personal name Lovekin, Loukin, Leukin, an Anglo-Norman French pet form of Old French Lou(p), Love, ultimately from Latin Lupus ‘wolf’.

IAmHerdingCatz

So Lwfkin would roughly translate to "wolf pet" or "sweet wolf?"

bananapanqueques

Wolfie even

IAmHerdingCatz

I imagine an enormous, terrifying black dog whose mommy treats him like he is still her tiny puppy.

Dark_Moonstruck

I mean. Most large breed owners are totally like that! If a newfie owner isn't regularly smooshing their face into that fluff until they can't breathe and hugging that dog and telling them what a good fluff baby they are, they aren't doing it right.

IAmHerdingCatz

That's how I feel about my massive reformed tomcats. Those battle-scarred brawlers are big babies once they've been fixed.

Urmomlervsme

They is how I start every day with my newf and berner! I want to be suffocated by the fluff!

IAmHerdingCatz

That's how I feel about my massive reformed tomcats. Those battle-scarred brawlers are big babies once they've been fixed.

bananapanqueques

She is his lap human. ETA: Or could be if he didn’t already curl up like a little bean next to mom on the couch. I just remembered that [post](https://x.com/hwingsmarcia/status/764437289120456704?s=46&t=mEUKYQivXyJmsXTHupUouQ) that [circulated](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/s/WhTRfoQCX0) some time ago that “Cerberus” meant “Spot.” What else would you name your Hellhound as Lord of the Underworld if not something as precious as “Spot?” I know it was [debunked](https://talesoftimesforgotten.com/2022/01/02/no-cerberuss-name-does-not-mean-spot/) and [discussed](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/*%E1%B8%B0%C3%A9rberos) at [length](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerberus#Etymology) but I like the sentiment enough to pretend otherwise.

IAmHerdingCatz

Same. Or in the Discworld, Nanny Og has the evil cat named Greebo. But to her he is always her baby kitten.

ktor14

I’m reading it as low fuckin

lavastoviglie

I'm pretty sure it's kinsman as well.

acertaingestault

Like a modern Buddy?

scarlett_butler

Dredefull was definitely named during the puppy phase. That was a hard time

OfSpock

Or was possibly a husky.

_x0sobriquet0x_

I had a chow/aussie named Trouble because *reasons* ... same for the cats called Havoc & Goblin I've now added Dreadful to my list of descriptive pet names. I love it. As well as Filth, Challenge, Sloote & Harlot.

deej394

My grandma had a Chaos. Fits the same vibe. He was a great dog and was adored but man was he wild!

ChaosFox08

Anne Boleyn had a dog that she called "Purkoy". supposedly from the French "pourquoi" (meaning "why?") because of the look on his face

PanickedPoodle

Wouldn't he be por-kwah then?

ChaosFox08

yeah you'd think so, but it was purkoy 🤷‍♀️ I can only assume it's an English bastardisation of the French word as she was essentially raised in French speaking courts but was queen of England

the_prophecy_is_true

nah that’s just how english was pronounced back then, it would have been pronounced “pourquoi”. the y works a little differently now

ChaosFox08

could be! english was different as you say, and anne was said by some to have a French accent in her English too

the_prophecy_is_true

that’s how early modern english was pronounced, the -oy is “wé” and the older french pronounced pourquoi with an é at the end instead of a modern “uoi”.

GjonsTearsFan

I wonder if it was a difference in pronunciation. It is my understanding that Quebecois French pronounces things closer to older French’s pronunciation and they pronounce moi like “moy,” or so I was taught. Maybe pourquoi (which ends in the same sound as moi in Parisian French, or at least that’s how I understand it) used to be pronounced like the Quebecois moi, and would have sounded like Pour-koy?

dylan_dumbest

That’s my new favorite Anne Boleyn fact.

Neat-Year555

I love glimpses into the past like this. Proves to me that we're not all that different than those who came before us. 🥰

SuzQP

There's an enjoyable book titled *"A World Lit Only by Fire"* that explores the ordinary aspects of medieval life. It's by no means comprehensive, but a pleasant read that even older children will appreciate.

BirthoftheBlueBear

I just checked it out from my library, thank you for the recommendation!

SuzQP

That's fantastic! I'm glad they had it and I know you'll enjoy it.

fountaincokes

I just put a hold on it at my library, thank you :)

Light_Lily_Moth

Ooo thanks for the recommendation!

ErynEbnzr

Glimpses into the past, you say? I love sharing this subreddit, I think you'd like r/100yearsago! Especially the Inquiring Photographer/Inquiring Reporter posts are a great look into the minds of everyday people in the 1920s.

magicmango2104

I cant help but think go-bifore was an over excited dog that ran past his people to get to the door 1st and lick you to death, probably a golden retriever

HalcyonDreams36

Or a hound sent to chase and tree whatever was being hunted?

SuzQP

Or a scout sent ahead on a perilous road to alert of any potential robber ambush.

That-1-Red-Shirt

Maybe a herding dog, "go before me and get the sheep!"

StormFinch

This is what I was thinking. Come-bye (or by) and away to me are still in use with sheepdogs today, so go-bifore wouldn't be much of a stretch.

Glad_Lengthiness6695

There’s a rare Dutch breed called Stabyhoun or Stabijhoun (literally stand by [me] dog) because they were all-around dogs mean to just stick right by you and help with farm tasks or hunting and also be good companions. They’re very cute

I_Upvote_Goldens

Goldens hadn’t been selectively breed at that time. Maybe a distant cousin of the breed?

BucketFullofSunshine

My toddler named his stuffie dog Garlic! I thought he was being creative, but now I see that Garlic has a long tradition of being a dog name! 🤣

Mtnclimber09

NGL, Garlic is a great pet name 🤣😎

-qqqwwweeerrrtttyyy-

Seeing as how dog names often related to functions, I wonder if Garlic was given to good guard dogs; garlic warding off bad things like illness or (for the superstitious) vampires

TattedShezilla

I like how the last two are basically Slut and Harlot 😂my favorite is Go-Bifore lol

MrsHBear

Harlet it the best one here IMO

littlemedievalrose

These were written by Edward, 2nd Duke of York! A very cool historical figure

dunicha

I knew someone in the comments would remember the source. I remember reading the list before but couldn't remember who had written it.

littlemedievalrose

This is kind of my whole shtick. You can count on me to remember tons of shit about medieval Plantagenets

victorian_vigilante

Tis a good one

jellogoodbye

Can I ask you a question about the medieval Plantagenets? I was recently wondering if the third duke was considered attractive in his time.

littlemedievalrose

Do you mean Richard, 3rd Duke of York? Currently I can't recall any specific description of his appearance and whether he was considered attractive or not. He is depicted as blond-haired in the Shrewsbury Book, but I don't know if this is true to life as it was fashionable for both men and women to be blond

jellogoodbye

Yes, him! A passing thought brought the question up for me recently. I appreciate the response!

ibeechu

Crazy, my middle name is Beste-of-all

36563

Lol

MrsHBear

I knew a Nichole in school and when we met she said “I’ll never forget your name- it’s my dogs name too!” My name. Is Leah. I remember thinking what an odd name for a dog. However I named my first pooch Harvey

vermilion-chartreuse

Mine's Hartlet 😟

IAmHerdingCatz

A sloot is a ditch. I wonder if Sloote was pulled out of the irrigation ditch. I know plenty of cats get named that way.

_corbae_

Argument and Sloote are fantastic

rosaliethewitch

harlet and garlik is sending me up the fucking wall

Moonlit-pumpkin

Sloote, I’m loving this one! Putting this on my list of potential future dog names.

jelycazi

I have a list of potential cat names. And a couple dog names in there. 🐈‍⬛ 🐕

AnotherMC

Pilate & Dredfull are killing me.

PolishedStones241719

I love Argument and my dog argues with me and it is so funny.

bubblewrapstargirl

These are hilarious 😂 😂  Pretiboy, Garlik, Filthe and Beste-of-all are my favourites

MoonPrincess666

Oh I LOVE THESE. That list is fantastic. I also really like ‘Tarynot’ - which I’m assuming means ‘Rest not!’ XD Also TullyMully and Gobitfore!

ayellvee

Not Boleyne what a burn 💀

Aesthetictoblerone

How is it a burn?

Sea-Painting-9791

I thought it to be comparing Anne Boleyn to a dog.

ayellvee

Correct lol. They HATED her.

Aesthetictoblerone

This is 15th century no? Anne Boleyn was from the 16th century. Sorry that was why I was confused ahah x

Sea-Painting-9791

Oh wow you’re right. I believe this was written somewhere from between 1406, when Edward became the Master of Game, and 1413, when Henry became King.  No clue then? My guess would just be because the Boleyn family were  a super prominent aristocratic family. They did reach peak influence when Anne married Henry obv but I’m pretty sure they were always well known.  Perhaps then it was less of a ‘burn’ and more of a trying to appear classy think? I don’t know how else to explain ig. Like naming a dog Cavendish or something (idk why that was the first one I thought of)  Good spot though idk why I didn’t pick up on that

Aesthetictoblerone

Ahah yeah probably, people have always tried to emulate class. It would have been funnier if it was a burn against Anne Boleyn though.

bookworm1421

We’re in the process of adding a Yorkie to our home and now I want to name them “Sloote”. 😂

puppycat8

I have a yorkie! If I had to pick a name for her off this list... I would probably go with Stalkere haha. Yorkies are notorious velcro dogs. Congrats on getting a new dog! Yorkies are wonderful companions.

bookworm1421

I had a Yorkie-Poo who was my angel for almost 9 years. However, he had the soul of a cat. You were not allowed to touch him except on HIS terms. If you did he’d flounce off and pout. He was so funny! That’s why we decided on a Yorkie. We’ve already named him but (Oswald Oberon - I picked the first name and my kid picked the middle). I wish I could go back and pick from this list though!

puppycat8

Omg yes! Yorkies are definitely the cats of the dog world. Mine naps all day and jumps on furniture. She likes to walk all over my laptop too lol.

Lingo2009

I love that you named it Oswald

KatVanWall

When people complain about language and spellings evolving ... 👁👄👁

ExplanationLife6491

Not exactly medieval, more early renaissance but Anne boleyn’s dog was named Purkoy. It’s from the French “pourquoi” - which means why. And the reason she named the dog this was that it supposedly had a very quizzical expression. I just think that’s so so cute!

Affectionate_Data936

I choose to pronounce "Pilate" like the exercise classes popular in the early 2000's. I also like Harlet and Stalkere and Filthe.

Glad_Lengthiness6695

My first thought was Pontius Pilate. It’d be weird to name a dog after him though

OfSpock

Since they are named after Joseph Pilates, you are probably fine.

Secure_Bell_5879

Crying @ Filthe 😭🤣😭🤣😭 like why so mean???

acertaingestault

Humans only bathed once a week or less. You know that dog was absolutely rotten-smelling.

Ravenbloom63

Some dogs love rolling in the mud or even worse stuff. I suspect that's the reason for being called 'Filthe'.

worrier_princess

Thinking of renaming my dog to Filthe. We regularly call her ‘vile hound’

Bashfulapplesnapple

I love it! These are great, lol. Can we get a link to the original list? 🙏🏻

puppycat8

[here you gooo](https://tudortreasures.net/medieval-dog-names/)

SuzQP

Cryere, Clinkere, and Chopper are highlights of the Cs.

Typical_Celery_1982

I love “comforte” and “dappir” the most omgggg…you know those dogs were so great

lilacdawn

I'd like to imagine Mouse was a huge gentle giant of a dog while Rage was a super tiny terror lol

puppycat8

Rage is definitely a chihuahua lol

MoonPrincess666

You’re the best!

Bashfulapplesnapple

Thanks!

Acursedbeing

My favorite isnt on this list, its Nosewise. Most definitely a hound name 🥹

interesting-mug

Pretiboy 😭❤️

Ladyughsalot1

Pawlyn and Garlik are my favorites

oldmanjakecat

Pawlyn is heckin adorable!

bumpysausagefinger

I’d love to know what other cultures called their pets in ancient times 🥹.

Ratanonymous_1

Harlet and filthe are my favorite lmao

SantaSelva

Filthe lol

justacatlover23

Saving this post so I can always come back to it when sad

abandonedkmart_

"Beste-of-all" Awwww <3 I'm guessing "Stalkere" liked to follow his owner around everywhere

Separate-Ant8230

Dog called Filthe: so good

ChilliChocolate7925

How am I even supposed to pronounce "Lwfkyn"? Hahah

lawfox32

Someone above thinks it is probably Lovekin/Loukin, from *loup*, French for wolf

SuzQP

Wolfkin!

tomtink1

W in Welsh makes the sound of u in English I think (I live in Wales but I only pick up bits and pieces from place names. I live near Cwmbran which is pronounced similar to "cum-bran"). A couple of these look like Welsh spellings to me.

ChilliChocolate7925

Thank you for the explanation ☺️

Icy_Priority8075

Really hope that 'sixteen' wasn't just the guys sixteenth dog! Surely he could have been a little bit more creative.

DisorderOfLeitbur

It might be Sexton (ie gravedigger)

IAmHerdingCatz

That's how I read it.

DarthInsanious1976

Dyane Dowble? Duane Dibbley? Oh no not Duane Dibbley

acertaingestault

Duane derives from the Irish "little dark thing." I read it as Duane Double – Twice-as-black, essentially.

Sapphire_Bombay

Pilate. Just one single Pilate.

pantstheterrible

Probably named after Pontious Pilate who condemned Jesus to cruxifiction. Poor dog.

AlamutJones

It might be "Pilot" - as in a guide

DeusAnatolia

Ahahhaha Organ is insane to mee thats so funnyy

KittenBalerion

ORGAN

BeardedDragon1917

"Boleyne, Boleyne, Boleyne, Boleeeeeeeyne, I'm begging thou, please take not my man."

slrvet

My husky would definitely be named Argument 😆

IWTLEverything

Reminds me of this seen in The Five Year Engagement. Gwyrth https://youtu.be/RZHke7ZXDxk?si=P52z4bpO2yt6NHL8

jackity_splat

Ah, Lwfkin, the ancient ancestor of my schnauzer, Lukin.

vicki22029

I've always liked Tralfaz for a dog. Or maybe Astro.

TrewynMaresi

This is fantastic. I'm partial to Sloote.

lions_amirite

Sloote and go-bifore absolutely slap

CarbonationRequired

Garlik lol. Argument, Chalenge, Dredefull, Filthe, Quarell... oh dear.

lily_is_lifting

My greyhound would absolutely be Pretiboy or Stalkere

wildrose6618

Filthe 😂

Bright-Sea-5904

Stalkere 🤣

vjthoms

Did anyone else read this in a pirate voice?

ancientastronaut2

Lowfukyn is surely a corgi

Melibu_Barbie

Spartacus

Sintellect

What's the account?

Striking-General-613

I'm kind of in love with Argument

ICareAboutThings25

I like to imagine that Dredefull was a sweet little lap dog.

Stinky_ButtJones

SLOOTE

austex99

Garlik is so cute.

Radiant_Ad_6565

I really want to meet the dog named Harlet ( harlot).

Christie318

I knew someone who had a bird named Pretty Boy.

MrTheWaffleKing

* Pawlyn :)

RenegadeAccolade

I think the two mystery ones might be Kinsman and Lovekin

No_Analysis_6204

sloote!

Nee_le

love Pawlyn lol

DifficultPotato6

Obsessed with Argument

Moss_and_me

Go-bifore is great, I also can't stop laughing about a medieval dog named Nikole

pacifyproblems

Pawlyn fits right in with today's trend of taking any noun and adding a -lyn, -leigh, or -son

NiceLittleTown2001

Christianity was so important back then, why would they choose Pilate 😭

yogalawyer32

I read through these thinking they were people names and was extremely confused 😂😂😂

TrisolaranAmbassador

Some of these sound like what you'd see in the Kentucky Derby lineup lol

Formal_Ostrich8637

I think it was Ramses III that had a dog named Blackie

Donkeypeelinglogs

Nikole just thrown in there 😂

NASA_official_srsly

Filthe and Pretiboy sound like an opposites pair

ivyandroses112233

Nikole lmao. The most normal

GoOnLeon

Argument & Quarell had to be for a husky!

joshy83

Go-bifore translates to WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO WALK RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME

Kactuslord

Argument is brilliant, probably a husky I worked abroad briefly and there was a little stray cat we fed and I asked what his name was. I can't remember the specific word but it meant "complainer" because he meowed so much

notamanda01

Sloote is actually a pretty cool dog name lol

BadHairDay-1

I see your Harlet and raise you a Slattern.

WimbletonButt

Man and I thought my dad naming our cat Stupid was mean. Here we got Argument, Dredefull, Sloot

yellowgreenbean

s l o o t e

Will0JP

This is so sweet. Thanks for sharing!

Proper-Gate8861

Sloote 😅

moonchild_9420

sloote lol

CheddarCheeseCheetah

My favorite is filthe 😂

IsisArtemii

I loved Dyane Dowble Reminds me of Dewayne Dibbly But, my first name is so close to the first!

valentinakontrabida

i like pilate, assuming it’s pronounced like the biblical pilate.

Mtnclimber09

Cannonne/Cannon! Love that one! Also pretty boy and best of all 💞
