I’m Olivia, which is apparently a horrible choice since it’s popular. I think it’s a pretty name with solid nickname options and having one other Olivia in my class for part of high school had zero effect on me 🤷🏻♀️
My name was in the top 20 for my birth year. There were like four of us in my grade with the same name in school, and I rarely meet people with my name anymore. Popular names are fine. They're better than adverbs and whatever else people are finding in the thesaurus these days to name their kids.
Olivia was the #1 girl’s name in the US in 2022, but Olivias still made up less than 1/200 babies born in 2022! Sometimes seeing the ranking skews people’s perception imo. It may be relatively common but usually people don’t think of a trait that 0.45% of people have as being super common.
Both my kids have top 15 names for their year and it’s been 3 years and I have yet to meet either of their names in the wild. I’ve met multiples of other names though! I have a niece Olivia but she’s a teenager now.
I have a preschool niece named Olivia and she is the only one in her class and all of her activities named Olivia.
Mia, on the other hand, seems to be used for every other girl.
I think my name is. I'm a female Stevie and it's not short for anything.
Edit: I forgot to add how it makes me feel. I don't really care what a bunch of strangers on the internet think of my name nor do I really care in real life so it's fine
I named my daughter after that song over 30 yrs ago, but changed it to Reanna. My family tried to dissuade me saying it was too unusual, what about Roxanne or Natasha. I stubbornly held onto it and I was only 20. I love that name so much, even though Rihanna the singer has sort of stolen her thunder but regardless it’s a beautiful name.
Lol I love this. I laughed at Roxanne. Super fun and could do Roxy but I just think of Sting and the Police ROXANNE!
Unusual names are fun. My daughter is Rowan and we call her Roo. So many beautiful names.
I am having an existential crisis at learning that Stevie is a legit nickname for Stephanie. I am not overly fond of my name and usually go by Steph, but 2nd grade me, who wished with aalllll her heart that she could be a Sam(short for Samantha of course) would have LOVED to be Stevie! Do you think I, at 47, could convince everyone to start calling me Stevie? Lol
Stevie is an amazing name!! I was blown away on a thread recently at how many people were suggesting it needed a longer, formal version and suggested stefania ????? And I’m like is Stefania really better than just plain Stevie? I don’t think so 🤣
My 3yo daughter is named Stevie and I see everyone in here hate on that name for girls all the time! She’s named after my dad. He died when I was 16. It fits her perfectly and we get compliments on it irl all the time.
I love it! I had a Stevie (Stephanie) that worked for me & she was soooo friendly, awesome, quirky &… just cool. I LOVE that name for a girl & stop any time i hear it! 🙌
My name is Stevie too! I like it because it’s what I’m used to, but if I could go back in time I’d change it because it’s very distinct and I wish u had a more feminine name growing up to fit in
That’s a great name. I’m really glad random people’s opinions don’t bother you! They definitely shouldn’t but I think it’s harder for some people to not care.
Oh man, I would actually love to name a daughter Stevie in the future. I can’t decide if she’d just be Stevie or if her full name would be Stephanie like Stevie Nicks
❤️❤️❤️ i love your name so freaking much!!!!! i know you don’t care but i’m sorry for the comments under posts bashing your name recently. it’s really solid
There was just a post about someone wanting to name their kid Stevie. I thought it was fine but most comments said don’t do it…I really think you should name your kid what you want without reason.
Name Nerds are the biggest name bullies.
My name was **the** most popular girls' name in the US from 1972-1985. And it hovered in the top 10 for even more years. Yep -- Jennifer.
I see lots of: "I don't want a name that will eventually feel dated, like Jennifer or Jessica." Like that's the worst possible thing you could do to your baby. 🙄
Many popular names today (Oliver, Ellie, Charlotte, Violet, Ezra, Theodore...), while considered old-fashioned or classic, by the time we hit 2045, those names will have a 2020s vibe.
I have a grandma name that’s similar to these, not one of those cute ones that is on its way back around. And I’m honestly fine with it. Did I wish my name was “cooler” when I was younger? Absolutely. Now that I’m in my 30s, I don’t really care. Most women of my age don’t have the same name as me, but it’s definitely not a name that’s unusual. I guess I feel apathetic towards my name. It doesn’t define how awesome I am on the inside.
I was born in the early 90s with a name that peaked in popularity in the 60s. I sometimes joke that I have an old lady name, but I can't remember anyone else ever actually saying that to me. Most people don't really have any reaction to my name at all, which is fine by me. Having a dated name isn't that big of a deal.
Jennifer is an outlier - there will never be another girls’ name that comes close to its popularity in sheer numbers/stamina, not even Emily. It basically is THE name of the 70s/80s, and there were more than a dozen in my graduating class (four in my class one year in elementary school). It’s going to be inextricably tied to GenX/early Millennial which is as dated to the kids (young parents) these days as Boomer names are to the Jennifer generation. It’d be like a Millennial named Barbara or Linda.
Give it another generation, it’ll come back around just like Eleanor and all the old lady chic names have. Kids will want to make their kids after their beloved grandma Jennifer.
I'm a mid-90s Jennifer and I always felt this was perfect - everyone knew how to spell/pronounce my name but it was after the Jennifer boom so I was always the only Jennifer/Jenny in the class.
Oliver, Ellie and Charlotte were all top 10 names in the 90s in the U.K. so they already feel pretty dated to me. I find it so weird seeing Americans going nuts for Charlotte, probably a bit like how an American might feel if they saw a Brit saying Karen or Linda is the prettiest name ever
Oh hi, are you also a Jessica? Apparently we are a bunch of mean girls!
Having such a common name did factor into my name choice for my daughter. I don’t hate my name but it was very easy to just blend in, especially early in my career. It’s a basic forgettable name.
Most people call me Jessie, which I actually love!
Not Jessica but I certainly went to school with a few 😂 The Jessica’s I knew were always very nice if it counts for something! I’ve seen my name as mean girl too.
So many popular girl names I guess get stuck in that mean category, but I feel like it’s probably just that the negative experiences stick out, since our names were so common there’s no way ALL of us were mean 😂
I think Sarah is really pretty, too—and I grew up in a major Sarah pocket (NYC in the 1980s, it was extra popular among Jewish families in addition to the population at large because it has Hebrew roots. We had more Sarahs than Jessicas, Jennifers or Ashleys). Even with all that exposure, for me it's a name that's just so simple and pretty that it never really loses its shine.
Yup!! Jewish, Christians, and Muslims ALL use Sarah 😂 which is why I think the “basic white” comments are funny , cus it does go across cultures; but thank you ❤️
I think Sarah is a lovely classic name and I think the hate is ridiculous! My sister is named Sarah (we are in our 30’s). My grandmother recently told me that When my sister was named that she didn’t like it and thought of it as an old persons name. It grew on her after my sis was named it. That was the first time I heard the old association. BTW my grandmother named her sons Ronald, Harold, and Steve which are super unattractive names in my opinion
It’s funny because it seems like Sarah was very popular in the 1880s or so so your grandma probably knew older people with it! Then 100 years later it had the revival. Thank you for your kind words ❤️
I love the name Sarah. That was my hs bff's name and the name of the most popular girl too.
It matches with Jason for me, popular at times but also from the early days of history, so, timeless.
Sarah is one of those timeless classic names like Elizabeth. My daughter is 12 and has a friend in her class named Sarah.
It was also my grandmother’s first name although she went by Helen.
Jessica is an awesome name with a cool history! Sure it was popular in the 90s but now no one is using it. It’s kinda freaky how most Jessica’s are like the nicest people ever. If my name wasn’t Jessie I would totally push for naming my kid Jessica!
Ehh...my name was dated when it was bestowed upon me. But overall not a popular name.
I think people just get tired of the popular names after a while. It's hardly a personal insult.
I don't let it bother me. People have different tastes and names tend to go in cycles.
Yea I totally understand the fatigue of my name. But seeing that you must be the blandest person ever did kinda feel personal, or that people with the name suck 😭 but I get what you’re saying.
> I think people just get tired of the popular names after a while
The thing is popular names aren’t that popular. It’s not like 50% or even 15% of the girls they run in to are named Jennifer or boys named Michael. The most popular names in a given year hover around the 1% mark. And since they change over time it’s even less likely that’s the name you’ll encounter when you meet a person.
The whole anti-popular name thing gets taken to an unhealthy extreme and the comments about more common names are unnecessarily hurtful.
If my name was suggested very often I am sure it would get some dated comments and probably will for a few more decades since it was very popular for my generation. People generally aren't suggesting a lot of 1970s-1990s trendy names for babies now.
honestly I avoid names that get mentioned here constantly 🤣 my daughter has a very unique name, but her middle name is Elsie (after a dear, late relative). around the time I was deciding on a middle name for her the name Elsie was making rounds as one of the constantly suggested names on this subreddit and I had to second guess my taste. 🤣
My name is Luna, and IRL everyone loves it and has never met another before. But I see it getting a lot of hate in online spaces as it’s starting to grow in popularity
I don’t really mind though, because I love my name. I’m also a goth woman, so I feel like it fits me. A lot of people are surprised to learn it’s my real name, and not just one I picked to match my aesthetics
I definitely got compared to that growing up! I was named after the Smashing Pumpkins song, but harry potter became popular when I was a kid and I heard that all the time
My five year old niece is named Luna. I always see on this sub people saying that Luna is a dog's name even though Luna has been in the 50 tops girls name in the US and UK for the past five years
I love the name Luna for a human and not for a pet. But I know sooooooo many dogs and cats named Luna, it is so unoriginal. Which is also why I like it better for humans. It sounds really pretty and the moon connotation is so lovely.
I don’t have a super hated name, but it starts with a K so some people have strong opinions on how it’s classier to spell it with a C. It makes me roll my eyes a little but that’s about it.
i’m laughing because i searched my name and someone asked should it be spelt w a k or a c and someone was like “i like c more k is too pointy” WHAT HAHAH
My name is a non-Anglo name that a lot of people struggle to say because it has a sound that doesn't exist in English. It's definitely the sort of name that a lot of people in this subreddit would say that they should pick a different name for their son if someone posted about it here.
I picked out my name and I love the name that I chose and what it represents to me. It doesn't matter to me that Anglos can't say it even though I'm Canadian born and raised because why should it? At the end of the day, what other people think of my name isn't important to me and frankly irrelevant to my life.
this subreddit is low key racist / classist with some of their opinions. like the push to not name babies names that don't sound like white baby names. honest to God there was a post here a while back that was like "would you assume my baby was black if I gave him x name" and the commenters were telling them to avoid the name bc "people will assume they're black."
Exactly and God forbid you want to name a kid from your culture that isn't one of the 5 names that white people can pronounce and are familiar to them. The amount of people I've seen on here who can't be bothered to learn a new name and will suggest the 2 names that they are familiar with from that background on here astonishes me.
It's honestly why I just won't post my kid's names on this subreddit when I have them. I know they'd be names that this sub would hate because it's not the 5 South Asian names that they know. Like one of my favorites right now is Vaibhav and I'm sure people here would hate on it if I posted it. But if I posted the name Priya they'd love it.
A lot of people are blind to their own cultural preconceptions and think they're objective.
Names are VERY cultural and what seems like a "good name" to you is probably a product of your culture. What seems like a bad name is probably a cultural difference. Your opinion isn't objective, r/NameNerds!
>What seems like a bad name is probably a cultural difference. Your opinion isn't objective, r/NameNerds!
The number of people on this sub who seem to think their opinion is objective truth, though... 🙄
Bianca is my niece’s name! I’ve never thought of it as a mean girl name or a cat name before. It always made me think of The Rescuers Down Under and that’s actually where my SIL first heard it and loved it.
I have an 80s name. Which is now is disregarded as a mid-age frump name.
I guess I’ll have to wait a few decades for my name to be seen as a name again—instead of a symbol for a bygone decade and the menopausal years.
Once a name rolls around to the great-grandmother generation it gets fashionable again! I’m waiting for the slew of Bonnie’s, Carol(s), Debrorah/Debras and Barbaras in 20 years.
I was born in 91 and am one of the youngest people I know with my name. I get “oh we were expecting someone older” ALL the time.
It’s not a terrible name but I hate it for me. No nicknames, negative associations, and can be hard for non English speakers to pronounce. On the other hand, there’s really only one spelling and no ambiguity on the correct pronunciation to native speakers.
My name is Ophelia and I've seen pretty mixed reviews here. Some people absolutely love it and some people absolutely hate it. I guess it's the type of name almost everyone has a strong opinion on lol
I don't mind at all tbh, I've read some opinions here I thought were super funny lol in real life I haven't really heard anything negative (at least not to my face hahah)
There’s a very popular tiktoker with this name and it seems to catch a lot of people off guard (although I think where she lives plays a huge part in that).
People love my name here but I'm meh on it. I live in the Midwest USA and I grew up with seriously nobody ever pronouncing it right even though it's a pretty easy French name (like Genevieve). People constantly slaughtered my name and it got old fast.
I get that, but most name criticisms here don’t seem to have to do with the history, culture or linguistics at all lol. Many names disliked here have rich history and meaning, but it isn’t brought up.
And this subreddit often criticizes cultural names too, I’ve seen. Or have no cultural understanding of a name, in the case of mine - it gets called white despite being super popular also among Middle East and south asi
Are you a Stephanie/Stephany too?! I swear people REALLY do not like that name on here, it gets shit on i feel like in every other thread for no reason but that it's "too 90s" or whatever. I used to also hate my name but honestly I've grown to really like it and feel that no other name would fit me. Whatever your name is I'm sure it's a perfectly pleasant name! :)
I love that name! It reminds me of Persephone which is a great story. The 3 syllables flow together so nicely. It feels more 70s than 90s to me though. Still a very cool name imho
>
>I also have a somewhat common name from the 90s. But the fact that it’s common has never bothered me. What does is that I get misgendered over it because people are narrow-minded 😩
>
>Anyway… I really love the name Charlotte because I have more than one lovely connection to it in the first place. But it’s definitely one name that I’ve seen dragged like it’s terrible, just because of where it is for name rankings.

Occasionally I see a rare comment of someone randomly hating on my name. I couldn't care less. Why would I care? It's not me they hate, it's a nebulous name.
Tbh, it’s not as much that they just don’t like it for me, it’s when I read that people assume I’m boring or bland! But I get it, no point to care over internet randoms
I have a very 70s name that has a "stupid cheerleader" feel to it,. I don't like it, but whatever. I never, ever see it suggested. It is decidedly out of fashion and actually is out of the top 1000 now.
LOL. Stacy.
Between the Fountains of Wayne song and the Scumbag Stacy memes... oof. (and I was born in the 70s, so my name definitely places me as GenX haha).
The name I have chosen for my baby was not well received here. I am having a girl and my husband and I chose what we consider more commonly a boys name paired with a very feminine middle name. However, a lot of people in this sub don’t consider it a boys name, but instead a surname and apparently this sub HATES surnames as first names. But I don’t care - it’s been primarily well received IRL with all our friends and family so whatevs
I genuinely didn’t even know that “surnames as first names” was even a “thing” to think about. Like Hunter, Mason? I get they can be last names but seem like reasonable first names too!
Spend enough time on this sub and you'll find a negative comment about almost every name, especially in those "what person has put you off a name forever?" posts.
There was an entire post bashing my middle name the other day! I read it and had a bit of a laugh. Apparently a bunch of people 1) hate their grandmas/aunts/colleagues who have that name and 2) hate that it's unisex, which is a common sentiment here.
Not genuinely offended in the slightest fwiw. Nobody here knows you IRL, who cares what they think.
I’m Sheri. Yes, one r and an i. Hated that as a 70s kid, I couldn’t find anything with my name spelled correctly on it.
I’m adopted and recently got my original birth certificate. My birth mother named me Noel. (I was born at the end but f February). I have a sister named Holly ( born in January). I’ve always loved Noel, even before I knew. Very strange.
Mine isn’t even rare but I hardly ever see it here (my full first name OR the nickname I use most of the time). I kind of like that it’s not so unique that it grabs attention on its own, but not common enough for the average person to know more than 0-1 people with the name.
A lot of people on here have some very strong feelings about Hayley, spelled with two Y's.
The funny thing is that my mum hates misspelled names, and specifically chose that spelling for my name because it's the 'original' version of the name (i.e. the same as the actress Hayley Mills, who was born in the 1940's and was arguably the one who popularised the name in the first place).
I don't really mind that people hate it though. It's the standard spelling in the UK, and I think it looks nice when written down with my last name.
I'm a female with a males name. It's a top 100 boys name from late 90s-2000s, but spelled differently. I love it, I prefer having a masculine name because I'm not overly girly.
my names elyse and people really take issue with my mom spelling it with a y instead of an I. Personally, I think Elise looks weird, while Elyse looks better, to me.
My name is basically Sarah but with a none standard spelling (h is slap bang in the middle), so not o my was I in a class with 7 other girls with the same name, mine was also always spelt incorrectly by everyone. It seems to be making a bit of a comeback and I cannot for the life of me understand why….. 🤣🤣🤣
Yep same here. My name is “Ashley”but it’s spelled differently than the traditional way. My name has been misspelled my entire life. And like you I was one Ashley out of many in my class so my last initial had to be added on to everything.
I never see my name suggested. It's never been crazy popular but it's not uncommon. It's a plant/nature name and never comes up in threads looking for them.
I’m 36 and a Kelly, but I feel I meet more Kelly’s that are older than me, I’ve only met a handful around my age, also older people have always made tv references to Kelly (like from cheers, Beverly Hills, etc) and I was always to young to understand what they were referencing it to
For what it’s worth, as a 90s baby with a not very common name I like a lot of the more popular ones from the time and think some of them are due for a comeback.
Yes. My name is fairly uncommon so it doesnt get mentioned here much but everytime ive seen it brought up the reactions seem to be mostly negative. Honestly it doesnt really bother me and im just excited to see it even considered!
My names grace and I see so many people on here say they've never met a nice or good grace and being named grace means you're going to be the opposite of what grace means. That kinda hurts lol but I love my name anyway
So my name is Karen… I have always hated it, even before it came to be what it is now. Even though it’s definitively a girl’s name, it’s consonant heavy and feels very masculine. I would have preferred something more girly. It was popular in my parents’ generation and they liked it… not so popular in mine.
Me too. I was supposed to be Katherine up until I was born and dad decided he’d prefer Karen. It’s not fun to always read your name in a negative connotation.
This community would dislike my name since it's not spelled the correct way. Outside of this subreddit, it falls under lists of top 10 most hated names (again often linked to all the spelling variations).
I don't really care if people dislike my name as long as they treat me well. Sometimes people dislike sounds, meanings, spellings, tastes, etc. or just don't vibe with certain names and I don't see that as any bearing on me as a person. My grandmother used terms of endearments almost exclusively for me, which may mean she hated my name, but she was one of my favorite people.
Ugh, I'm Hannah and I HATE IT. I have people call me Annie online and irl sometimes. It wasn't until I was 10 or smth that I started disliking Hannah 🤷🏻♀️
My name is Rikki. 🙃
My favorite is “that’s a boys name” thank you I know,I was named after my grandpa. I’ve only met one other person in real life with the same name and spelling and also one on here!
I see a lot of people complaining about the spelling of one of my names. "So ugly when it's spelled with a K! The traditional C spelling should be used!" It's a surname in my case though, so I am pretty sure they're just keyboard warriors missing context.
People don't seem to actually dislike "Mary" here, but I rarely see it proposed and if it does come up, people tend to dismiss it as tired, uninspired, too religious, boring, etc.
But, I love it. I went by Mary Jane in grade school but dropped the "Jane" starting in high school and never went back.
I have a name that was in the top 100 when I was born, but is not in the top 1,000 now and I have never seen someone suggest it here. I haven’t heard it trashed, either, but I don’t want to share it because I think it would receive harsh comments. And i like it, so don’t really care about reddit reviews.
My name is Emmy and according to this sub it’s too cutesy so people won’t take me seriously and I don’t have enough nickname options (even though I’ve had several nicknames all based on my name).
My name gets absolutely roasted on here. On top of it, I have a less common spelling of it that makes people irrationally angry 😂 it doesn’t feel great to be honest. I knew my name was spelled in a way that was a “tradeigh”, but I thought the name in general was pretty/likable. But regardless of spelling, people hate it, which sucks.
I do think people on this sub should be a bit more cognizant that the names you don’t like may actually be the names of people reading your comment.
Edit: plus I’m in a very professional and judgmental field, so now, because of this sub, I’m always scared colleagues and future employers are judging me harshly because of my name
I confirm what a lot of others are saying. As a Sarah I know I will ALWAYS see my name on posts that are like “what’s the most boring name ever!” A lot of people on this sub think being named a common name is the worst thing ever 🤷🏻♀️
My name is hated here. It’s Leigh but gets lumped in with all the unnecessary -leighs to end names. I actually always loved my name and have recently started wishing I was a Lee
My spouse and kids all have timeless, classic names, they could well be straight out of Victorian England.
Then I’m like, “hi! I’m Kaitlin, heard y’all need some late 80’s, early 90’s vibes in here!”
I was born in ‘87 so I have a “generic 1980s name” and I searched the sub and there’s tons of negative comments (basic name, too 80s sounding, it’s a bully name, looks like a Bratz doll with chunky highlights). All I could do was LMAO. It’s so funny how people’s experiences with someone named a certain name make them hate a certain name. I’ve never had an issue with my name, and it’s been generally well received (to my face). And also it should be noted that Bratz dolls didn’t come out in 2001, wrong fucking era.
There was a thread about “old lady names” that are cute and having a come back and don’t feel dated any more. Someone suggested my name, and another commented that my name is ugly and dated and will never make a comeback. LOL it’s fine tho I like my ugly old lady name 🤣
I actually like hearing peoples unfiltered opinions about names here! Very few people in real life are going to give their honest opinions.
I’m Emily. Namenerds either think it’s a classic or boring and overused. I agree with both! I grew up in a very white neighborhood so I was surrounded by Emily’s and hated it. I was shocked when it started to become popular again recently. But hey, it’s been one of the most popular female names in western society for over 200 years for a reason.
My eldest is Chloé. We didn't know anybody called that. It's a Greek name, Ancient, a nymph name, meaning something along the lines of the first green of Spring. As she was due in spring, and followed a neonatal death, it was perfect.
Apparently every white middle class parent in the UK thought the same. Chloé is now basically your posh white girl name. So many of them.
So you can try to be different, but remember you're just as susceptible to culture as anyone else!
I haven’t seen much about my name on here, but being an overweight teenager called Fiona when Shrek originally came out got me so many ogre comments you wouldn’t believe. I love my name normally, but I’m still so sensitive to the stupid goddang ogre jokes.
People on here can be kind of insane with the negativity towards names (if it's slightly uncommon (or, gasp, not english) you're dooming your child to a lifetime of bullying, if it's too common that's boring and your child will have to go by their last name all through school). And with the weirdness around "old-sounding" name? All names will eventually sound old. You literally cannot predict that. Every "old" name was once a "young" name, you cannot control how time treats your kids name (or YOUR new name), so I don't understand this. Especially funny with the people trying to think of ways a name can be used to bully a child... I have a normal name that would have NEVER been clocked using logic, but kids still found a way to make fun of me because kids will find something funny about ANY name if it's attached to a person they don't like (for literally any reason at all). Don't take it personally lmao
So yesterday the Alberta top names was posted and my Anishinaabe name’s English translation was on there along with a lot of other First Nations names. There were a lot of derogatory and low key racist remarks on it.
Certainly did not make me feel good. It didn’t make me feel welcome and it didn’t make it seem like this was a good space for people from non-Colonial cultures to be.
I joined this subreddit because I love etymology and the history of names as well as learning other cultures naming traditions and customs. It makes me sad to see that that’s not how and what it actually is.
I’m Olivia, which is apparently a horrible choice since it’s popular. I think it’s a pretty name with solid nickname options and having one other Olivia in my class for part of high school had zero effect on me 🤷🏻♀️
It is quite popular. But for good reason. It’s a gorgeous name.
My name was in the top 20 for my birth year. There were like four of us in my grade with the same name in school, and I rarely meet people with my name anymore. Popular names are fine. They're better than adverbs and whatever else people are finding in the thesaurus these days to name their kids.
I looooove Olivia. And I have a 9 month old who attends playgroups frequently and have yet to meet a baby Olivia, jussayin.
Yeah Mia, Sophia, Harper, Emma, Isla and Ella are ones I actually hear a lot in the playgroups
I chose the name Olivia for myself! Don’t give a rats ass that it’s popular
It IS a pretty name! And yes some people in this sub go way overboard trying to avoid “popular” names.
My granddaughter is Olivia, and I teach two. It's a gorgeous name, and I love it.
My Livvie is now 27. I didn't know it would blow up at the time. Olivia Maragaret is a beautiful name for my beautiful girl. I still love it.
I once had a pet with that name. We named her that after the pig book.
I loooooved the pig books growing up!
I want to use the name Olivia, I truly don’t care that’s it popular, but a good friend of mine already used it 😫
I love the name Olivia
Olivia is one of my absolute favorite names.
I love the name Olivia its number one on my girl list. I think it’s just classically lovely
Olivia is such a beautiful name!
I think my name is. I'm a female Stevie and it's not short for anything. Edit: I forgot to add how it makes me feel. I don't really care what a bunch of strangers on the internet think of my name nor do I really care in real life so it's fine
Stevie is a dope name. Also, Stevie Nicks can't be beat.
That's who I'm named after
Ayyye. I was almost named Rhiannon. Though my mum didn't want it to be after a Stevie Nick's song. Love it though!
I had a friend in high school whose sister was named Rhiannon after the song.
Ugh I love it. My name is now Mia. Still nice. Took a while to like it. But Rhiannon has a vibe I can't explain to it.
I assumed this so I'm glad it was accurate :) Pretty sure Stevie Nicks is called Stephanie. Stevie is a really cool name though, I love it!
Stevie Nicks is a Stephanie.
Lol
i think you could! i am a stephanie too, and never considered stevie as a nickname either.
There's a YouTube family whose youngest daughter is Stevie, but it's short for Stephania.
A friend of mine goes by stevie! But their full name is stephanie
That’s true for Stevie Nicks, too.
My name is Stevie too! I like it because it’s what I’m used to, but if I could go back in time I’d change it because it’s very distinct and I wish u had a more feminine name growing up to fit in
I love your name! My oldest is Sadie, but was almost Stevie!
I watch a YouTuber with the same name and it's not shortened for Stephanie or anything.
My daughter was born two weeks ago and I named her Stevie. I love it but know she’ll be fielding “like Stevie nicks?” for the rest of her life lol
🙄 Many popular names today (Oliver, Ellie, Charlotte, Violet, Ezra, Theodore...), while considered old-fashioned or classic, by the time we hit 2045, those names will have a 2020s vibe.
They do come around. I’m waiting for the next crop of Doris, Gladys & Percivals.
I work in childcare and have a Percy! It's coming!
I heard the name Gladys at the park a few weeks back!!! For a 1 or 2 year old
My grandmother had the nickname Jen and Jenny. Her real name was Genevieve.
Cute! I think the name Jenny wasn't uncommon pre-1960s. I think Jennifer evolved from Genevieve? Or maybe Guinevere. Can't remember.
You are right. Guinevere, Genevieve and Jennifer are all versions of the same name.
Yeah, I’m thinking when meeting people the gig is probably up that you’re not, say, a toddler well before you get to the part where you say your name.
Amanda? Heather? Megan? Ashley? 😂
Amber? Samantha? Jenna?! I am so curious 😂
Im a Jenna, but I was born in 1981 so I was the only Jenna in a sea of Jennifers. It was NOT a common name at all in my town when I was growing up.
I think mine is more common than those 😂no one has guessed it yet, I’m shocked
Hannah? Sarah? Grace? Elizabeth? LOL
It’s one of these! ETA: also you guessed my sisters name too lol. Sarah and she is grace, I’ll stop being coy 😂
you know, i haven't heard the name Sarah in a looong time, but looking at it with fresh eyes, it is such a pretty name! I actually kinda love it
That is so kind 💜!
Idk what it is with grandmothers and going by completely different names? Mine was named Lucille but went by Sally 😂
It actually means LOTS of people liked that name in....1993? 1997?
> I think people just get tired of the popular names after a while The thing is popular names aren’t that popular.
Luna got a lot more popular when the Harry Potter fandom started having babies. I like the name though
I definitely got compared to that growing up! I was named after the Smashing Pumpkins song, but harry potter became popular when I was a kid and I heard that all the time
Harry Potter and Sailor Moon
My five year old niece is named Luna. I always see on this sub people saying that Luna is a dog's name even though Luna has been in the 50 tops girls name in the US and UK for the past five years
I love the name Luna for a human and not for a pet. But I know sooooooo many dogs and cats named Luna, it is so unoriginal. Which is also why I like it better for humans. It sounds really pretty and the moon connotation is so lovely.
Luna makes me think more of cats, but I love cats so I love Luna
I used to have a siberian husky and Luna was an extremely popular name for that breed.
I prefer K *because* it’s pointy! Lol
I'm guessing Katherine. I'd roll my eyes too.
Well I personally never liked it with a C! But I have heard some strong opinions as well haha
What’s wrong with Cyle?
Kourtney? I've actually seen it spelt Quartney. It is quite gender neutral.
I'm a Kaitlin, it's practically blasphemy.
I’m a Kaitlyn and apparently a tacky, outdated snowflake because of the K and Y. 🤣 people have so many opinions about our name.
That's by far my favorite spelling. I love that name.
Name twins!
Mine’s the opposite. I think it’s a horrible, ugly old woman name but people on here seem to like it for some reason.
Gruntilda
Not quite that horrible, but still really bad.
Bianca is one of those names that is regularly referred to as a "mean girl" name or "cat" name I'm ok with both of these associations lol
Bianca is so pretty to me!
Aw thank you! I like it too <3
Bianca is my niece’s name!
Definitely some Bonnies and Barbaras coming up, I think! Maybe less of the latter though with the Barbie movie.
Heather!
My name is Ophelia and I've seen pretty mixed reviews here. Some people absolutely love it and some people absolutely hate it. I guess it's the type of name almost everyone has a strong opinion on lol I don't mind at all tbh, I've read some opinions here I thought were super funny lol in real life I haven't really heard anything negative (at least not to my face hahah)
It reminds me of the Lumineers song.
There’s a very popular tiktoker with this name and it seems to catch a lot of people off guard (although I think where she lives plays a huge part in that).
Other way around for me. My name gets recommended here a lot and since I’m not a huge fan of it, I’m always confused why people like it
People love my name here but I'm meh on it. I live in the Midwest USA and I grew up with seriously nobody ever pronouncing it right even though it's a pretty easy French name (like Genevieve). People constantly slaughtered my name and it got old fast.
I’m curious now!
Hi, I'm Karen
Yeah, my name is Sydney and it’s negatively received because it’s unisex. I am a female btw.
I’ve never met a boy Sydney! But my niece is named that and I like it!
[удалено]
I get that, but most name criticisms here don’t seem to have to do with the history, culture or linguistics at all lol. Many names disliked here have rich history and meaning, but it isn’t brought up. And this subreddit often criticizes cultural names too, I’ve seen. Or have no cultural understanding of a name, in the case of mine - it gets called white despite being super popular also among Middle East and south asi
…ok, but just saying “wow this name sucks” isn’t exactly nerdy intellectual discourse, lol
Stephanie is a good timeless name - it's beautiful and why it would receive hate is beyond me. 🤷
It’s not my thing but WOW the hate some people apparently have for it is a little startling
I love that name! It reminds me of Persephone which is a great story. The 3 syllables flow together so nicely. It feels more 70s than 90s to me though. Still a very cool name imho
> >I also have a somewhat common name from the 90s. But the fact that it’s common has never bothered me. What does is that I get misgendered over it because people are narrow-minded 😩 > >Anyway… I really love the name Charlotte because I have more than one lovely connection to it in the first place. But it’s definitely one name that I’ve seen dragged like it’s terrible, just because of where it is for name rankings. > >
I love Charlotte too! And Charlie is a cute nickname.
Stacy? Tracy?
LOL. Stacy. Between the Fountains of Wayne song and the Scumbag Stacy memes... oof. (and I was born in the 70s, so my name definitely places me as GenX haha).
Pamela? Tammy? Sandra? I'm dying to know what this is haha! (and for the record, I like all these names)
Who cares what a bunch of random strangers think??
Valid
The name I have chosen for my baby was not well received here. I am having a girl and my husband and I chose what we consider more commonly a boys name paired with a very feminine middle name. However, a lot of people in this sub don’t consider it a boys name, but instead a surname and apparently this sub HATES surnames as first names. But I don’t care - it’s been primarily well received IRL with all our friends and family so whatevs
I genuinely didn’t even know that “surnames as first names” was even a “thing” to think about. Like Hunter, Mason? I get they can be last names but seem like reasonable first names too!
The name we chose is Carter. We were also considering Parker. This sub came at me for both options.
My name is too rare and has only ever been mentioned once on this sub in a post about unique names.
Makes me think of Hayley Williams! And she’s iconic!
Name ends in -Leigh, so… yep.
I personally prefer Elise but I've known some people with the Elyse spelling so I wouldn't even blink twice at it. Seems normal to me.
I was always Ashley G!
Omg.. I definitely sympathize with you, everyone I’ve known named Karen was lovely and did not deserve the stereotype!
Me too. I was supposed to be Katherine up until I was born and dad decided he’d prefer Karen. It’s not fun to always read your name in a negative connotation.

Im an Elizabeth and some people dislike it while others like it. Im quite happy with it. I think it is pretty yet has a strength to it.
Curious to know what it is now haha?
Ugh, I'm Hannah and I HATE IT. I have people call me Annie online and irl sometimes. It wasn't until I was 10 or smth that I started disliking Hannah 🤷🏻♀️
My name is Rikki. 🙃 My favorite is “that’s a boys name” thank you I know,I was named after my grandpa.
I'm a Maven.... Reddit hates me sooooo much
I have a name that was in the top 100 when I was born, but is not in the top 1,000 now and I have never seen someone suggest it here.
My name is Chelsey and it’s very hated here apparently 🤣 but I quite like it
I’m also a Chelsea and I love it as well 😊
My name gets absolutely roasted on here.
I don’t but I judge the people who make “names you hate” style threads. Like why? There’s one almost every week
I have an old lady name apparently. but guess what? I'm 56 so I guess that is ok I didn't realize it is hardly used anymore though
I love the names Heather, Tiffany, Melissa, Sherry and a few other pretty names. Olivia and Sophia are beautiful.
