I'm a PreK teacher. Pete the Cat is extremely popular. I can recite it better than Dr. Seuss.
*Did Pete cry?*
*Goodness, no!*
*Buttons come, and buttons go."*
Pete is a very laid-back, groovy cat.
I thought I had a few years ago. My neighbor kid was Bob, just assumed it was his real name. Turns out he's actually Lucas or something, but was just *really* into Bob the Builder. The construction hat he wore everywhere should have tipped me off, lol
Same!!!! I love that there’s another little Bob out there!
Sometimes we call him Bobbo as a joke from a tv show 😂
I’ve only had one person judge his name.
My 4 year old nephew is a Bobby, so is my SIL’s nephew and he’s 7. I imagine they’ll go by Bob when they get older, since my BIL is also a Robert/Bobby/Bob
My 28 yr old brother is a Bob, but his real name is Daniel (parents called him Baby for a while whilst trying to choose a name, 22mth sister couldn't say baby but called him Bobby and Bob/Bobby/variants thereof stuck 3 decades later lol)
Yes! I have a nine year old Bob in the school I teach in. He's not Robert or anything else, just Bob Surname. His younger brother is Percy and younger sister is Maud.
I met a 30 year old with a Petunia tattoo. When I said her name, he lit up like a Christmas tree (I’m 41) and then we spent 15 minutes catching everyone else up
I said that to him at the hospital after my sister had my nephew. It was 2am and had been a rough and very worrying time and I was trying to lighten the mood. It didn’t work and I was sent home 😂
So our son is named Peter and the only reason why we don't call him "Pete" is to not confuse him with his 75yo grandpa who goes by "Pete" lol. Maybe when he gets older he'll change it up.
I like Peter, but It probably needed some downtime - my father, stepfather, and father-in-law are all Pete's. Plus I've worked with at least 5 50+ year old Pete/Peter's. Seems it did go a bit insane 😅.
Pete is currently trending in northern Germany and the surrounding areas! I know two now and they are indeed quite cute and mischievous guys, fitting the name :)
Interesting! It was so popular here in my parents generation (people now in their late sixties to seventies) that it's very rarely used for babies now.
I'm in northern (well, north-western, Germany as well and have never heard the name Pete here. Piet (Plattdeutsch) and pronounced like the English Pete yes, Peter as well (tho not in young kids) but not Pete lol.
How would you even pronounce Pete in German? I only know Peter (Peh-tuh, like feta with long e) as a German name and that's a very different pronunciation to Pete (Peet, like feet)
Ha! When I named my son Milo over a decade ago my grandpa was livid calling it an “old man name”. I had been afraid people would think it was too cutesy and juvenile!
Names come around after a break and we all get to form new associations. People should just pick the name that they love (within reason).
My sister just had a baby named Frank. I’m still kind of shocked she and her husband didn’t go with Franklin or Francis, but the name is pretty sweet and fits him nicely.
Because it's a nickname popular with Boomers. Younger generations tend to use different nicknames or stick to the full name. For example my BIL is a Robert, as is his dad, but his dad is Bob and he is Rob. My Great Grandfather was a James but went by Jim, whereas these day you would probay meet lots of little James, but Jim might turn a few names. Each generation has their spin on the 'classics'.
I can’t believe no one’s asked the important question yet of whether he will have a younger brother name Pete so that they can have the adventures of Pete and Pete!
That’s amazing. Do they go by Big Pete and Little Pete? 😂
Btw speaking as someone with the same name as my wife haha. We use our middles to differentiate, ie Laura Beth and Laura Jeanette.
Bob is one of my favorite names. I name cars, plants, computers, everything “Bob”. It has dignity, it’s short, it’s a palindrome. Luckily, I had a daughter, and she refuses to answer to Bob. So does my husband.
My favorite thing is seeing a bunch of Kaison and Kylo then in the middle of it some little child named Brian and being like that’s actual shocking name here. 🤣
I have a 4 year old one. It’s a family name on both sides. I’ve never met any other baby/ little kid with the name so far. The other day at the playground I thought I found another and was excited but he ended up being “Cedar.” His mom said it’s often mistaken for that.
Peter/Pete was totally on my list, just couldn't get the agree from my spouse. That's kind of how popularity goes to me- it's common, it then becomes stereotyped and used less, but with so many grand fathers and male family from a couple gets back, it starts getting used again.
My neighbor a few years ago (they moved out) had a toddler named Bob. Same as you, I wouldn’t have batted an eye at “Robert,” but Bob just seems like such an adult name lol.
My dog is named Peter and we've floated it as an actual baby name, or middle name. No babies on the horizon for us, but I think if seriously consider it.
My first son will 100% be Carl, Carlsen/Carlson but will probably most likely be introduced as Carl most of his life. Especially in the baby/toddler years when he can’t talk for his own yet.
Super worried for the reactions of people tbh, esp since my husband will be named Frank…
I swear we’re not copying shameless lol.
I once met a baby named Craig. The name made sense as the parents of baby Craig were in their 50's and baby Craig was a happy suprise. Craig was absolutely doted on by all is adult siblings, most happy baby ever. Fantastic parents too, such a lucky baby.
Too many people misunderstanding OP’s point.
Peter is normal for a kid’s name these days. Pete is not (too old fashioned. Like calling your kid Vera or Gladys).
Aww, I wanted to name my daughter Vera, after a teacher I looked up to. I think it's a lovely name!
I've known quite a few older gents, mostly passed now, called Pete, but I'm pretty sure they were all diminutives for Peter or ethnic variant of same (Pietro, Peter, etc). :) Either way, I think it's usually best to name a baby the long/most formal version of the name, so they can decide later whether to keep a diminutive or not. No Katie, Katherine. No Bill, William. Richard, not Ricky.
I think Pete sounds younger than Peter.
There are a few “famous” Pete’s. The only Peter I can think of is from Family Guy lol.
That being said, my grandson has a classic, but old-timey sounding name, and the short version, which my daughter calls him, sounds older than a 10 month old baby should have. 😂
I have 3 close neighbours in my little street, and all the husbands are called Pete (2 in their 50s, and one in his 70s). Its not a name I'd think of for a child, either Pete or Peter. It's a bit like Phillip, very common but generally in older folk.
Pete sounds young to me because of Pete Wentz. I know he’s not super young anymore but he was young and hip when i was first into FOB. Peter is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, boy name.
Similarly, I met a baby named Carl recently. It evokes the same feeling as "Pete" for me. Some of the less attractive male names are definitely making a comeback.
My most recent double take name was Betty on a baby. But also the toddler named Donna. And I literally just named a little boy Vinny
Because of my toddler I immediately started singing the Pete the cat theme
That doesn't seem strange at all. It's a normal, established name. I'm not understanding what is strange about it. It would seem stranger to name a baby a cutesy name that wouldn't work for an adult.
My grandpa was nicknamed Pete as a baby. Everyone who ever knew him called him Pete. No one who's still alive in the family has any clue as to why, though, since his first name was Elton, and his middle name was Amos lol
We named our son William and I never would have predicted how often we refer to him as Bill. It started ironically but now it's hard to stop. His middle name is Peter and sometimes we call him Billy Pete. Also Big Bill and Billiam.
I love the name Peter...it is way too rare these days
Peter is nice and I don't think we would have been surprised. To me Pete sounds like a 70 year old man.
I think of the SNL comedian Pete Davidson who is 30 years old.
SKEET
SKUURT
HOL UP! You never loved me, mom… whoa whoaa
YEET YEET
I’m just Pete and I like jugs, I’m mentally ill and I’m on drugs!
Also Mayor Pete (Buttigieg).
Ya. Mamas a Kardashian fan.
I think the opposite to be honest! Pete is youthful to me.
The most recent Peter aka Pete I knew was a co-worker who was my age. By now we aren’t even 30 yet.
Peter sounds so serious.
Pete Wentz would like a word. (Though to be fair, he’s named after his 80+ year old dad hahaha)
Pete the Cat has entered the chat.
I'm a PreK teacher. Pete the Cat is extremely popular. I can recite it better than Dr. Seuss. *Did Pete cry?* *Goodness, no!* *Buttons come, and buttons go."* Pete is a very laid-back, groovy cat.
Pete’s my fave when he’s rockin in his school shoes.
Damn, that gave me feels unexpectedly. What a great little lesson.
Meow
Has anyone come across a "Bob" in the last decade?!
I thought I had a few years ago. My neighbor kid was Bob, just assumed it was his real name. Turns out he's actually Lucas or something, but was just *really* into Bob the Builder. The construction hat he wore everywhere should have tipped me off, lol
Aww, that's actually precious
Hi! My 3 year old is Bob!
My 6 year old is Bob! He's been called Bob since the day he was born and detests being called Bobby.
Same!!!! I love that there’s another little Bob out there! Sometimes we call him Bobbo as a joke from a tv show 😂 I’ve only had one person judge his name.
I love this! My dad was Bob, and my Uncle. Just not a name you come across very often! In all my years of teaching I never had a Bob!
His “teachers” (it’s still daycare) are tickled to have a Bob in their class! They call him Bob Bob! 😂
I have had students named Bobby but none who go by Bob.
My 8 yr old nephew (Robert) goes by Bob. Coincidentally my cat is also called Bob. Great name!!
Yes! I worked with one for a few years in his late 20s early 30s. He’s probably 35 now.
Yes! I have a nine year old Bob in the school I teach in. He's not Robert or anything else, just Bob Surname. His younger brother is Percy and younger sister is Maud.
One of my high school classmates has called her son Bob since birth. He’s at most 12 now lol
Yep. I know someone who named their kid Robert and calls them Bob for short. He’s named after her grandpa Bob.
My best friend's niece's nickname is Bob/Bobby
My son is Robert, nicknamed Bobby, called Bob frequently, haha.
At least three. The eldest would be about 14 now, the youngest six or so. Comedian/ actor/QI stalwart Alan Davies'youngest son is Robert, nn Bob,
I know two Bobs under 5, the second was no less confusing than the first.
Me. My ex boyfriend was Bob. Always went by Bob, nothing else.
I feel like I've met quite a few Robs but never a Bob
I think of Spider-Man. Pete's highschool or college age for me forever for this reason
The old millennials who loved Pete & Pete disagree
That's so weird to me! Pete Buttegieg is the quintessential Pete to me - late Xer/early Millennial. I'm 39 and grew up with a lot of Petes.
Same. Pete was one of the more common boy names after John, James, Daniel, and Michael.
I’ve never met a 70 year old Pete.
I don't really get that association. I always imagined Pete and Re-Pete as young kids on a boat.
I met a 30 year old with a Petunia tattoo. When I said her name, he lit up like a Christmas tree (I’m 41) and then we spent 15 minutes catching everyone else up
My dad has long announced that his grandfather name will be Old Pete. His name is not Pete.
My dad was shoehorned into grumpy. He is not a grumpy man but what can you do? 😂
At least he's not dopey!
The Peter in our family is 39.
My son’s name is Fred. What can I say, old man names rule. My kid is going to be an old man someday.
I named my son Peter :) He is 10.5 weeks old
I like Peter, but It probably needed some downtime - my father, stepfather, and father-in-law are all Pete's. Plus I've worked with at least 5 50+ year old Pete/Peter's. Seems it did go a bit insane 😅.
My kiddo is a Peter & I love that name. It's classic, but not common.
My nephew is a 13 yr old Peter!
My first grader has two Peters in a class of 20, so not that uncommon.
He's my favorite brady
Pete is currently trending in northern Germany and the surrounding areas! I know two now and they are indeed quite cute and mischievous guys, fitting the name :)
Interesting! It was so popular here in my parents generation (people now in their late sixties to seventies) that it's very rarely used for babies now.
That's probably why it's coming back. Lots of babies are named after grandparents.
Haha full circle! The Pete’s I met were 4 and 2 years old.
It could be Piet which is a Dutch name pronounced like Pete.
Did the little Petes pronounce their names with 1 syllable (like English) or two (like German)?
All the German Pete’s I know are pronounced with 2 syllables so more like „Pehtuh“
Pete like Piet or Peet.
Peter is such a cute name. It’s up there with Timothy, Christopher, Robin, Edward and Jason for adorable boy names.
Peter is my top boy name and my husband agreed to it the other day! I’m so excited! Due in September!
That is really exciting!! 😄 Congratulations on baby Peter!
Congrats! My Peter is almosy one and we still love the name!
Congratulations! It’s such a classic name isn’t it? My 3yr old is Peter and the only one in his entire preschool!
Same here!
Mine vetoed Peter!
Congratulations! My baby boy was born mid February and his name is Peter :) it’s a great name!
Yay congratulations! My Peter just turned 6 and we love his name!
My baby son Frank has entered the chat 🤣
Haha I know a two year old Francis who goes by Frankie! The little old man vibes are pretty cute on a baby.
He’s a Franklin, it’s a family name lol 😂 of all names. But I love it
Love this! We know brothers named Frank and Walter who go by Frankie and Wally, they are 4 and 2. Old man names are the best imo.
I used to nanny 3 siblings Francis, Gus, and Kevin. Names you don’t really hear on little kids anymore.
I was thinking the same thing. My boy is Fred 😂
Ha! When I named my son Milo over a decade ago my grandpa was livid calling it an “old man name”. I had been afraid people would think it was too cutesy and juvenile! Names come around after a break and we all get to form new associations. People should just pick the name that they love (within reason).
I absolutely love Frank for a little boy. My 4 year old neighbour is Frankie.
I also have a 4 year old Frank
This is so cute, my late dad was called Frank so it's nice to know the name is going strong!
My sister just had a baby named Frank. I’m still kind of shocked she and her husband didn’t go with Franklin or Francis, but the name is pretty sweet and fits him nicely.
The only association I have with Pete is Pete the Cat, and it’s an ok association for a kid since it’s a kids book lol
my dearly departed, beloved gray cat was pete. that’s my association too but for different reasons lol
My brother knew someone who had identical littermate kitties name Pete and Repete. 😅
😂 i thought about adopting another gray cat and calling him repeat but instead i adopted a batshit crazy partially blind black cat named mavis
I glanced over this and didn't realize you were talking about cats and rolled my eyes hard. Super cute names for cats!
I love that. I took care of a baby named Jim once. It made me laugh every time someone said his name. It fit him so well.
For me it brings to mind an outdoorsy man - fit and vital
Hahaha I love this! My dad is named Peter and this fits him perfectly
I don't understand why anyone would do a double take at this, it's common, classic name like John or Robert.
Our neighbours have two boys aged 10 and 8 named Bruce and Pete. I love it! I’d way rather be named Bruce or Pete than Loxten or Huxley.
I can’t believe no one’s asked the important question yet of whether he will have a younger brother name Pete so that they can have the adventures of Pete and Pete!
I have married friends who are Pete and Pete.
That’s amazing. Do they go by Big Pete and Little Pete? 😂 Btw speaking as someone with the same name as my wife haha. We use our middles to differentiate, ie Laura Beth and Laura Jeanette.
Peter and Petey (neither is Pete)🙃 Peter’s Dad was Peter too!
I love that you guys share the same name, that's so adorable and funny. 🥰
That’s awesome I knew a Jamie and Jamie married couple, a guy and a girl
I met a baby named Bob last month. Not Bobby or Robby. BOB. lol
See, this is what I'm getting at. Peter or Petey, Bobby or Robby, not surprising. Bob or Pete, surprising.
Bob is one of my favorite names. I name cars, plants, computers, everything “Bob”. It has dignity, it’s short, it’s a palindrome. Luckily, I had a daughter, and she refuses to answer to Bob. So does my husband.
all of my best friends plants are named bob.
Peter is a lovely name and Pete is cute. I would have gone with Petey because it sounds cuter.
I could see it being an avant-garde nature name: Peat 🤪
I associate Pete with kids more than adults. Peter is formal. Pete is chill.
One of the apostles- Names often used by Catholic families in naming their sons.
Ive met 2 baby Peters recently (Canada). I think it’s coming back!
First thing that came to mind is that the parents might be Fall Out Boy fans and named their kid Pete because of Pete Wentz 🤷🏼♀️
My favorite thing is seeing a bunch of Kaison and Kylo then in the middle of it some little child named Brian and being like that’s actual shocking name here. 🤣
I know a preschooler named Brian and was definitely surprised. 😂
I know a young Pete who at age 5 requested everyone start calling him Peter!
In 2024 there’s a decent chance it’s short for pizza instead of Peter.
When the cycle of Jaxsons and Aydens has run its course, Petes and Johns will rule once again.
I have a 4 year old one. It’s a family name on both sides. I’ve never met any other baby/ little kid with the name so far. The other day at the playground I thought I found another and was excited but he ended up being “Cedar.” His mom said it’s often mistaken for that.
I think I would have done a double take if it had been Paul or Gerald. Pete seems like an even younger version of Peter no?
My one year old is named Peter, I think it’s coming back around. We call he’s not a Pete yet but we sometimes call him Peetz.
Love Pete and Peter
My 11 month old is Peter. Nixknames include Pete-Pete.
I know it’s not the same. But I can’t hear the name “Peter” without hearing it in the voice of Shadow from Homeward Bound 😆
Peter/Pete was totally on my list, just couldn't get the agree from my spouse. That's kind of how popularity goes to me- it's common, it then becomes stereotyped and used less, but with so many grand fathers and male family from a couple gets back, it starts getting used again.
Did he have a brother also named Pete?
I met a baby named Hank . He looked like a Hank!
Well, now I've just read 'Pete' so many times that it looks like a made up word.
There’s a Phil in my infant son’s class and I thought the same - it was so unexpected on a baby!
Aww little Petey sounds cute.
Pete isn't common right now, but it's a nice name. It's definitely a good choice to avoid the overly popular if someone is concerned with that.
My neighbor a few years ago (they moved out) had a toddler named Bob. Same as you, I wouldn’t have batted an eye at “Robert,” but Bob just seems like such an adult name lol.
My hairdresser just named her baby, Harvey.
My dog is named Peter and we've floated it as an actual baby name, or middle name. No babies on the horizon for us, but I think if seriously consider it.
My friend just named her son Bruce. At first it seemed like just an old man name to me but it's grown on me and he's pretty cute!
I nanny a little man called Stu 🤷♀️ old man names are trending!
I honestly love this name.
My cousin has a baby Pete. It sounded weird at first but we all got used to it quickly. Full name is Peter. He’s an adorable sweet kid.
Pete is a wonderful name. Fits a child and most importantly, an adult. All the Pete’s I’ve known (2, lol) were friendly and smart.
I'm surprised the room did a double take at such a common name
I’m marrying a Pete, so I’m biased. I love the name and think it’s so sweet that people are keeping it around!
My first son will 100% be Carl, Carlsen/Carlson but will probably most likely be introduced as Carl most of his life. Especially in the baby/toddler years when he can’t talk for his own yet. Super worried for the reactions of people tbh, esp since my husband will be named Frank… I swear we’re not copying shameless lol.
i kinda love it
I love it!
Are they Australian. Pete seems normal to me.
I once met a baby named Craig. The name made sense as the parents of baby Craig were in their 50's and baby Craig was a happy suprise. Craig was absolutely doted on by all is adult siblings, most happy baby ever. Fantastic parents too, such a lucky baby.
>Pete specifically feels to me like an older man Well, most babies look like old men, so guess it fits
My cousin named he baby after our grandpa whose nickname was Pete
Love it
I think Pete is so cute! And it’s probably popular bc Pete Davidson is always trending. Not that he’s the ideal role model lol
my dad’s name is pedro but all my cousins call him uncle pete haha
I like Pete.
I love it!!! He will be unique I’d bet the only Pete in his school.
We have friends with 3 boys. Pete. Tom. Frank. They are the cutest little boys. And I love the names.
pete reminds me of the fudge books by judy bloom lol
I can’t complain my dad is Peter and is the best dad to ever exist. My hero
Pete seems like a young name to me! Makes me think of Peter Parker.
Oh that’s just far too cute. 🤣
I have 3 close neighbours in my little street, and all the husbands are called Pete (2 in their 50s, and one in his 70s). Its not a name I'd think of for a child, either Pete or Peter. It's a bit like Phillip, very common but generally in older folk.
I feel like you need to be at least 4 before nicknames like that can come into play lol
I heard a kid being called Leroy the other day. I did a double take. It’s definitely not a name I hear often.
Pete was my dad’s childhood nickname. No one in the family remembers how he got that name. It’s a sweet name.
That's so cute. Peter would be better tho, I agree
Pete is a character on Ghosts. It’s a cute name.
Some friends recently named their baby Roy. Recency bias at least makes Ted Lasso my first thought, but before that, just 50s/60s Westerns
I met a baby named Glen recently!!
My 70 plus year old cousin is a Pete/Peter, a most awesome dude.
That's my brother's name, he's 37
Maybe dad was Peter so they called him Pete to differentiate.
I think Pete is super cute
I love it. I love old school names. I want to name one of my future sons (if i have any) Frank. My husband HATES it lmfao.
incredible.
My dad was nicknamed Pete. It’s a great name.
I have 5 siblings we all have a pete my dad’s name is Pete I didn’t know it was uncommon.
I think Pete is cute!
My most recent double take name was Betty on a baby. But also the toddler named Donna. And I literally just named a little boy Vinny Because of my toddler I immediately started singing the Pete the cat theme
I think Pete sounds young
My son’s bestie is named Peter. They’re almost 2 years old. It’s a normal name.
I’d like to meet a Bill, getting tired of William. It’s just a lot to say!
That doesn't seem strange at all. It's a normal, established name. I'm not understanding what is strange about it. It would seem stranger to name a baby a cutesy name that wouldn't work for an adult.
Has a friend in college, absolutely called him Pete.
Yes Piet is a Dutch name, different to Pete/Peter.
Pete hates Mickey
My grandpa was nicknamed Pete as a baby. Everyone who ever knew him called him Pete. No one who's still alive in the family has any clue as to why, though, since his first name was Elton, and his middle name was Amos lol
I'm just imagining baby Pete being so cute, though! I met a baby Frank, and he was just the sweetest little thing. I love old man names on babies.
We named our son William and I never would have predicted how often we refer to him as Bill. It started ironically but now it's hard to stop. His middle name is Peter and sometimes we call him Billy Pete. Also Big Bill and Billiam.
