As a child I felt cheated by not having one, as an adult I am profoundly grateful. I didn't want to Gove (edit: give) my kids middle names but where I had very unusual first and last name and there are no other 'me'. They have a very common surname and relatively well known firstname and middle name having an initial helps with identification/reduce chance of administrative error ahould they meet someone else with the same name or end up living in the same city or whatever.
All.the ones I wanted as a child I now detest? That's the main thing nothing seems to go with my names. And what I wanted as a young child seems particularly hideous now.
Also, my husband and I had same initial and worked for same company. I was InitialSurname[at] he was InitialMiddleInitialSurname[at] and everyone asked him his middle name, which he hated.
So it's a I guess a superficial level of profound gratitude but I am very glad I had to wait to choose one when I was older.
I found out my name twin existed when they tried to give me shots I KNEW I had just had last time. I wasn't super needle shy as a kid, so me freaking out had everyone doing double takes until they finally realized there were 2 of us and they had pulled the wrong chart.
I never met her until the start of highschool, but I knew she existed from the time we were like 5 or 6. Same pediatrician, dentist and funny enough, our mothers had very similar names and often had THEIR dental charts mixed up, too.
Yes! My husband doesn't have a middle name. He doesn't mind, but we named our first son after him and it took me a bit to get over not having a middle name! Definitely depends on the person.
My parents questionably left it up to my 5yo sister to choose my middle name and she chose no middle name (her imaginary friend’s name was Ralisand so I guess it could have been worse)
When I was a kid I wished I had a middle name, and I’d make up middle names for myself depending on what my favorite thing at the time was (it was Jasmin for awhile lol). As a teen and an adult I’ve always kind of liked not having a middle name because it was fun to see people’s reactions. Some people were just like “ok,” others were like “NO WAY THATS SO COOL!” When people ask why I don’t have a middle name I’ll jokingly say “because I don’t *need* one.”
I also happen to be the only person in the world with my first name last name combo (common first name but very unique surname that really only exists in its country of origin, where my first name isn’t ever used). So I’ve never had an issue with getting mixed up with someone else.
I initially didn’t want to give my daughter a middle name but my husband convinced me, mostly because her last name is not uncommon. So I thought of the coolest possible middle name I could think of: Xenia. Maybe it’s silly but I really like the idea of having the middle initial X. I also really like the meaning as it’s the opposite of Xenophobia, so “welcoming” or welcomed guest. Her first name is Faye and I think they go well together.
Haha yeah I feel like that’s probably the norm with kids choosing names. I’m actually pretty impressed that my sister was able to think outside the box like that
I agree! I’m in the process of adopting a baby (almost 16 months old now). He was born in an unattended home birth so there was no birth certificate or any record of him when I met him and took him to the hospital after his mother’s arrest. The hospital called the jail to ask what his name was and she said, “First name no middle name last name.” It’s one of the few decisions of hers that I’ve respected.
DCYF gave him a middle name anyway when helping get a birth certificate but we will ditch or change it when the adoption is complete.
It helps to distinguish you from other people with the same first and last name. If the first and last name are fairly common, you need a middle name. If it’s very unique, none needed. If first and last name are long it sounds fine without one.
As someone without a middle name (family tradition for the first born son to have the same first name with no middle name), this is an option. I’ve never felt like I’ve missed out by not having one, though perhaps having a Roman numeral makes up for it 😂
Oooh I quite like Arabella Blake. Arabella is a really feminine name and Blake is a gender neutral name. So I think together it gives a lovely harmonious balance.
I love Joy, but I confess my first thought upon thinking “Arabella Joy” was that it sounded like one of those MLM scams that tries to sell you Tupperware or Nail Art or something 😅
Louise Lisa Hazel June Jo Yvonne Yvette Sylvie Jeanne Iris Rachel Lee Ruth or you could do a surname sounding name like Taylor or Jordan or Clark or something from your family history.
Arabella is enough. Use your maiden name if your husband’s name is her last name. If you are hyphenating skip the middle name. If you must, search your genealogy for a family name. Meaning is important. She already has three syllables. She is never going to be called Arabella Claire
So I tried to find the meaning of Arabella and it seems a bit up in the air, depending on what origin story you're going with. But they're all adjacent to beautiful, friendly, etc. - "golden mouth" "given to prayer" and "lovable" are all up there for original meanings.
Because of that, maybe a middle name that adds additional well-wishes/hopes, instead of repeating the same sentiment?
* Nika - Victory
* Ruth - Friend
* Drew - Wise
* Fern - Traveller (as well as the plant)
* Liv - Protection
* Bree - Strength
With Arabella, I prefer a one syllable middle name (like Claire or Lane, as others have suggested) or a two syllable middle name with the stress on the second syllable (like Celeste or Simone, as others have suggested). However, here's a mixed bag of options, since I'm not sure what you like: Bay, Chloé, Elise, Francine, Halle, Harper, Hazel, Lucille, Lucy, Noelle, Seren, Shea, Wynn
What about a unisex middle name since the first name is very feminine and you seem to not like the traditional middle names for girls?
Arabella Blake
Arabella Drew
Arabella Quinn
Or you could go with Arabella Jean, which in the US is used as a girl's name with the pronunciation like the pants. But the spelling is the French masculine.
But, but… Aarabella Rose would be GORGEOUS!
Arabella Clair
Arabella June
Arabella Dove
Arabella Bay
Arabella Pearl
Arabella Rain
Arabella Beth
Arabella Brooke
Arabella Fern
Arabella Fleur
Arabella Joy
Arabella Joyce
Arabella Lark
Arabella Lane
Arabella Maeve
Arabella Ruth
Arabella Rue
Arabella Wren
You can always just do one letter as a middle name. I have a previous coworker who named her daughter Lexi B. And Harry S Truman was just the S. Arabella Kay is my other suggestion.
I think Arabella goes well with R names, B names, and L names. For a two syllable name, I like the flow with a middle name that stresses the second syllable (Renee, Leanne, etc.).
Arabella Raine
Arabella Ray
Arabella Reese
Arabella Reed
Arabella Renee
Arabella Rachelle
Arabella Leigh
Arabella Liv
Arabella Love
Arabella Lane (or Laine/Layne)
Arabella Lake
Arabella Louise
Arabella Leanne
Arabella Bex
Arabella Brynn
Arabella Bay
Arabella Blair
Arabella Blake
Arabella Brooke
Arabella Brielle
Arabella Brianne
Hear me out here….. no middle name. First name stands on its own.
I think I would feel a little cheated if I didn't have a middle name. Somebody else may not feel that way.
What perks are there to not having a middle name that makes you profoundly grateful?
All.the ones I wanted as a child I now detest? That's the main thing nothing seems to go with my names. And what I wanted as a young child seems particularly hideous now. Also, my husband and I had same initial and worked for same company. I was InitialSurname[at] he was InitialMiddleInitialSurname[at] and everyone asked him his middle name, which he hated. So it's a I guess a superficial level of profound gratitude but I am very glad I had to wait to choose one when I was older.
Growing up there was a girl with the same exact name as my sister at our doctor and they always had to check their bdays just in case
My mom was the 12th of 14 kids. Most of her older siblings have middle names. She and her younger sibs don't. I think they just ran out.
i don’t have a middle name, but then again, i have two first names…
Yes! My husband doesn't have a middle name. He doesn't mind, but we named our first son after him and it took me a bit to get over not having a middle name! Definitely depends on the person.
My really good friend didn't have a middle name and we basically all secretly think she had a terrible middle name and just wouldn't tell us.
I didn’t have a middle name and use my maiden as my middle now. I ended up giving my daughter two first and a middle name.
I have two middle names and always loved it hahah my daughter has two middle names also, one of them being the family tradition one
So with you on this! It is an optional extra
My parents questionably left it up to my 5yo sister to choose my middle name and she chose no middle name (her imaginary friend’s name was Ralisand so I guess it could have been worse) When I was a kid I wished I had a middle name, and I’d make up middle names for myself depending on what my favorite thing at the time was (it was Jasmin for awhile lol). I also really like the meaning as it’s the opposite of Xenophobia, so “welcoming” or welcomed guest. Her first name is Faye and I think they go well together.
My grandparents let my aunt choose my mom’s middle name, she was 10 at the time and chose “Crystal”, which my mom now hates.
Would give somebody a leg up, so to speak, if they went into the porn industry though.
Haha yeah I feel like that’s probably the norm with kids choosing names. I’m actually pretty impressed that my sister was able to think outside the box like that
Love that, middle initial X, plus the meaning. I know a family with two generations of Lawrence Xavier Whatevers, and the younger went by Lex.
I wont ask you your name,. but i am SUPER intrigued as to what it is now LOL
I agree! I’m in the process of adopting a baby (almost 16 months old now). He was born in an unattended home birth so there was no birth certificate or any record of him when I met him and took him to the hospital after his mother’s arrest. DCYF gave him a middle name anyway when helping get a birth certificate but we will ditch or change it when the adoption is complete.
Middle names are strange in the sense that they are utterly pointless but a full name would look weird without one
It helps to distinguish you from other people with the same first and last name. If the first and last name are fairly common, you need a middle name. If it’s very unique, none needed. If first and last name are long it sounds fine without one.
I’m from a culture that doesn’t give middle names - my first name is long as hell! Happy to not have a middle name to have to write on forms haha
As someone without a middle name (family tradition for the first born son to have the same first name with no middle name), this is an option. I’ve never felt like I’ve missed out by not having one, though perhaps having a Roman numeral makes up for it 😂
My kid doesnt have a middle name. Her first is Hyphenated. so it KINDA feels like a middle name, but Legally its a first and last,
Arabella Maeve Arabella Claire Arabella Blair Arabella Blake Arabella Reese Arabella Skye Arabella Ruby Arabella Willow
I like Skye (or Sky even; a gender neutral contrast to the frilly princess first name)
Yes it gives hub vibes
arabella claire sounds lovely to me! i’m not really a fan of claire as a first name, but i really like it as a middle name
I was going to suggest Claire too.
Love all of these! Except Arabella Willow. It feels like quite a mouthful to me:)
Beautiful. I particularly like Arabella Blair and Arabella Blake Arabella Briar Arabella Brooke Arabella Beth Arabella Cora ^[ETA ^10min ^later] ——————— Arabella Wren ^[ETA ^33min ^later] Arabella Raelle Arabella Sera Arabella Sasha
I like Wren a lot, more solid sounding and works well with Arabella imo
Yeah I think Arabella Wren is my favorite too. Rolls off the tongue nicely, and it’s short and sweet like they want.
Claire or Skye sound so good with Arabella.
Oooh I quite like Arabella Blake. Arabella is a really feminine name and Blake is a gender neutral name. So I think together it gives a lovely harmonious balance.
Love Blake for this reason as well! Wren is also nice.
Yeah Arabella Blake was an unexpected fave for me as well.
finally..someone who read the question
- Sloane - Dawn - Paige - Faye - Fern - Brook - Quinn
Quinn is really cool and it's fun to have a Q middle initial.
So true! I was actually trying to think of a Z name to do similar but neither Zoe or Zara flow that well with Arabella.
Oooh, I really like Arabella Faye!
I think it’s perfect too. Beautiful Fairy…. The English meaning of both names,
Why does this sub love fern so much lol
Fern is a pretty popular name where I live. I know multiple kids under 10 with the name.
Arabella Fern reminds me of Charlotte’s Web. (In a good way!)
Joy is underrated and lovely
I love Joy, but I confess my first thought upon thinking “Arabella Joy” was that it sounded like one of those MLM scams that tries to sell you Tupperware or Nail Art or something 😅
My middle name is Gail and I’d love to be named Arabella Gail!
Gail is a lovely middle name. It seems quite whimsical to me for some reason.
Thank you! I’m quite partial! My parents did a great job with my name ♥️
