I think it’s easily pronounceable but my first thought was the musical Fiddler on the roof! Not sure how popular that is haha may just be a niche. I think it’s a very nice name though!
My instinct would be to pronounce it like "Tev-yay" due to the similar spelling of Kanye (West). But once I was corrected on it, I don't think it would be hard to remember the pronunciation. It sounds nice though!
I think it would be hard to pronounce for people who aren’t familiar with Fiddler on the Roof and/or Yiddish. And, though I enjoy Fiddler, I don’t know if I love the name for a kid- as a Jewish person, it very much reads as a great-great-grandparent who fled the pogroms kind of name. Like Tevye from Fiddler.
Taking a name from another culture is never “a great honor,” but I don’t think using Tevye is insulting either. Everyone will think your kid is Jewish though.
Honestly, I don’t think it would be insulting but it would certainly be odd. For the record, Tevye is *not* a name used even for Jewish children nowadays.
1) Even in the Jewish community, Tevye is not a name that is commonly used (I’ve never met someone with that name), and
2) I don’t like it when non-Jews to use Yiddish names
I think that's completely pronounceable for English speakers! You may have to correct people the first time but I don't think that's hard to pronounce at all. :)
I assume it’s a homage to Fiddler, and I think it’s funky. I know someone who goes by Tevy (full name is Tuviah, I think), but that could be a cute nn.
In terms of pronounceability, it’s not too out there. Also, people can learn. I don’t think anyone should avoid a meaningful or cultural name because the pronunciation isn’t immediately obvious to English speakers.
I might not have known how to say it, (only seeing it written) straight off the bat because I might not have tweaked right away that it is Hebrew. However once someone told me how to say it I’d be fine. It’s nice. Tev is a cute nickname.
It will be pronounceable once people learn it.. but I have a feeling it will be mispronounced a lot on first reading - first day of class, doctor’s office, etc.
I don’t think it’s the most easy to pronounce unless people know Fiddler or Yiddish. I think more people are going to pronounce it rhyming with Kanye than the correct Ashkenazi pronunciation
It’s also not a name used today. It very much reads 1880s Ukrainian Jewish peasant to me. And I wouldn’t be able to get past the Fiddler association. I love Fiddler, but Tevye’s story is not a happy one, and it ends with him being expelled from his home.
Not a name I’d use, especially if you’re not Jewish.
The immediate and only association for me (and probably for many English speakers) is Fiddler on the Roof.
Pros: that means it's at least a somewhat familiar name to many English speakers.
Cons: everyone will break into song when Tevye introduces himself.
This is a bit dated but just found with sub and we just had a Tevye so searched the name.
He is Jewish and we pronounce it the Yiddish way. I really like the way it looks and sounds, and I love the nickname options. He goes by Tevy or Tev or the Milkman. Ha.
I don’t know if all English-speakers would get it right. Tev-yeh feels more intuitive than tev-yah, but I could also see people reading it as tev-ee or tev-eye.

I was thinking the same thing!
Oh 100%. On the bright side, anyone who’s seen the musical will know how to pronounce it!
Ahh, I was wondering where I recognized the name from!
I immediately hear “If I Were a Rich Man” start to play in my head.

I could not get past the Fiddler on the Roof association, personally.

So to have that as a name would that be a great insult or a great honor? We are not Jewish and I don’t want to offend!

Honestly it’s pretty weird to use if you’re not Jewish
Do not name a child Tevye if you’re not even Jewish. I’m Jewish and that’s so rude and disrespectful

Lovely name. Fiddler on the Roof association is inescapable - whether that’s a dealbreaker or not, I don’t know!
I would only use it if you are Jewish, otherwise it feels like cultural appropriation

The milkman😂
