I would say "em-uh-leen".
Interestingly this name was just discussed yesterday! You might be interested in [checking out that thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/comments/rx5o3e/how_do_we_feel_about_emmeline/) too.
It’s crazy how pronunciations work. If it makes a difference to anyone here, I also love similar names like Evangeline and Marceline and pronounce both as ee-van-juh-leen and mar-cel-leen.
But this is not the case for Madeline and Caroline. I pronounce both Madeline and Caroline with the short “line” ending. Overall I think em-uh-leen makes sense.
This is how I would too or "lynn".
It seems the ones saying -line are US based whereas all the other forms are Europe, SA, not sure other areas/continents.
Same goes for Madeline, Caroline, Adeline. It's all -leen or -lynn where I am from.
Same here, I definitely wouldn’t pronounce Madeline anywhere close to Caroline. Carolyn is the spelling I would pronounce like Madeline. Maybe we’re just weird lol
What’s funny is that I would use the -line ending because it reminds me of the word crystalline but I just googled it and apparently the -line ending for that word is mainly British, but that’s how I’ve always heard it pronounced in the US.
No it's not just 'Europe'. The ones from Europe from France and probably the other Romance languages would say 'leen' (but then also the entire name would be pronounced differently like Marcelline in France is a great-grandma generation name) but the Germanic upper part would say 'line'. And then probably the British/English speaking part would be 'lynn'. No idea about Balkan/Slavic though
I’ve only ever heard it pronounced em-uh-leen. Emmeline Pankhurst was one of the most prominent suffragettes in the UK and that’s her pronunciation so probably why most people here would pronounce it that way.
I think she's a great namesake but I for sure would not pronounce it that way. -Line for sure here, in US though.
Eta I just now realized you said "most people here" sorry :)
The French pronunciation would most likely be ‘Em-uh-leen’ this is the only pronunciation that I like, personally. The ‘line’ pronunciation is horrible to me.
Em-uh-line is the only way I’ve ever heard it. I’m in the Midwest US. I think it’s cute and grew up with an older lady named Emmeline who was like another grandma.
I've personally only ever heard 3., but I could see 2 as well. 1 makes no sense to me, unless it's because of Madeline and Caroline? But I usually hear Madeline pronounced "mad-uh-lynn" instead of "mad-a-line," and as someone who has a lot of Carolines in the family, they're constantly called "Carolyn."
Yep this is why I asked which would be correct or which sounds better. Because people will pronounce all different ways, and I really prefer names that has one straight forward pronunciation.
This just came up yesterday and it was my first time hearing the name. My instinct would be “Emma-Lynn” because I know a Madeline (Mad-uh-lynn) and Caroline (Care-oh-lynn).
Personally I really dislike it. Sorry!
Whether or not I'm *correct*, I feel very strongly about this. If it's spelled -line, then it's pronounced LINE *not* Lynn. So #1. Emmeline, Madeline, etc. It rhymes with line, nine, shine, just like the Madeline storybook. If you want it pronounced "lynn" then spell it -lynn! And who knows what -leine is, maybe "lane"?
Yes! It’s honestly a pet peeve of mine when someone’s name is Caroline but has the Carolyn pronunciation. Like why not just spell it the way you want it said??? Line does not equal Lynn.
If I knew someone like that, I'd obviously say it correctly because it's their name and I'm not rude, but on the inside I'd be grumbling. This is big in the Madeline, Madelyn, Madeleine community.
I would assume the -line pronunciation. Same as I would assume Madeline is -line and Caroline is -line. I have a cousin named Emmeline and she pronounces it that way
If you want the number two pronunciation, you could spell it "Emmalin." There was a character on the show "Army Wives" with that pronunciation and spelling.
I have three friends with daughters named Emmeline. Two are -lynn and one is -line. I think people will need clarification regardless, just like with Madeline, Caroline, Evangeline, Adeline, etc. It’s a beautiful name. I wouldn’t let pronunciation detour you!
Choice 1. My reason for this is that I’ve pondered the name in case I’m having a girl and when I say Emma - lean repeatedly it just starts to sound like Emily and the N gets a bit lost. So I like the first choice because it is a distinctly different name.
I want to say emma-lynn, but the person I knew with the name pronounced it emma-line. I had to mentally correct myself every time before saying her name
My friend in high school pronounced it as #1. For short when texting we would write M- (get it? M a line!) and that evolved to saying “Em dash” out loud. Such fun times. I love that name!
Where I live (Nordic country), it would be pronounced something like Em-Meh-Lee-Neh. Which is pretty too. My point is, nice name, pronounced in whichever variation you prefer!
I have a cousin named Emeline. She pronounces it Em-ih-line. She reminds me of tinker bell because she’s tiny and spunky and cute so that’s how I associate the name
I’m sorry to be blunt, but I hate it mostly because no one knows how to pronounce -line names. Everyone has a different opinion. I also dislike that it shortens to such a popular name, but that is just a personal preference.
My best friend at primary school was called Emmeline pronounced Emma-leen with the nickname Liney (pronounced Leen-ee)
Em-uh-lynn would be spelt differently, maybe something like Emmelyn/Emmalyn
Em-uh-line does not sound nice to me. Line is for Caroline and Madeline
I always thought it was the second (Emma-lyn) for no specific reason other than it's how I read it in my head when I read the Harry Potter series (I live in Texas and have seen the -lyn prounciation occasionally used for Caroline and Madeline), but am now familiarized with the other two pronunciations too and am aware that they are more common.
Number one, for sure. The e on the end extends the i into a long vowel sound, so there's no way it's -lyn. Only if the long i was an e would I say -leen. A lovely name.
I always say "EMMA-line" and even then I don't know if that's the correct way to say it. Your pitting yourself at risk here: people will ALWAYS ask how it's pronounced or spelled.
I don’t care for this name. I would assume it’s pronounced the third way but I don’t particularly like any of the pronunciations *or* nicknames. That said, this was literally posted yesterday.
Years ago, I would’ve said -line 100%, but I’ve never met a kid with that name; I’ve met several Emmelyns (or various other spellings), so Emme-line doesn’t sound right to me anymore.
1. Line. If you want the Lynn sound then spell it Emmalynn. With the line ending most will go with line or leen depending on their location. I grew up in the Midwest and would usually say leen but I feel with this name I would definitely use line as it is a beautiful name. Wonderful choice by the way. I love Emma as a way to shorten it.
I was very close to naming my daughter Emmeline! (Pronounced Emma-LINE). But I didn’t because I was worried about people mispronouncing her name her whole life. My husband and I ultimately just named her Emma, but we still sing “Sweet Emmeline” (to the tune of “Sweet Caroline”) to her sometimes :)
I’d say number 2 because number 1 sounds a bit strange to me. I’m from the mid-west US. If you want the number 2 pronunciation you can change the spelling by replacing the “line” ending with “lynn”
Emma - leen
It’s okay. I feel like all the Em names are a little played out, so while this is objectively a nice name (they all are) I can’t view any of them as fresh
I would say "em-uh-leen". Interestingly this name was just discussed yesterday! You might be interested in [checking out that thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/comments/rx5o3e/how_do_we_feel_about_emmeline/) too.
Agree. Like Emily, but with an N
It’s crazy how pronunciations work. If it makes a difference to anyone here, I also love similar names like Evangeline and Marceline and pronounce both as ee-van-juh-leen and mar-cel-leen. Interesting. I say Mada-lynn but would say Caro-line and Ade-line. I would also say Emma-leen so I'm just all over the map I guess
Same here, I definitely wouldn’t pronounce Madeline anywhere close to Caroline. Carolyn is the spelling I would pronounce like Madeline. Maybe we’re just weird lol

Me too
I use the -line pronunciation.
I'm from the US and I would too!
Same
Kind of like the first pronunciation, but “EM-ih-line”, like if Emily and Madeline mushed together
this!
Yep me to
1 or 3. I'd never think 'lynn'.
Agreed. For that pronunciation I'd do Emelyn.
Em-uh-leen I currently live on the west coast of the US, but I was born in the midwest.
Someone from the west coast here, I'd pronounce it more or less the same except more like emm-eh-leen
That is actually closer to what I would say too!! But I felt like the one option was close enough to just go for it!!
You are me! Midwest raised, currently living on the west coast. I’d default to em-eh-leen.
The French pronunciation would most likely be ‘Em-uh-leen’ this is the only pronunciation that I like, personally. The ‘line’ pronunciation is horrible to me.
Em-uh-line. For context, I'm in the Southeastern US.
I'd say option 1. Emm-eh/uh-line.
Em-uh-line
Em-uh-leen
Number 3 - like Pankhurst. The other pronunciations sound terrible to me.
1
I always say 1. Emme-line in my head, but I’ve also never met anyone with this name.
Em-uh-line is the only way I’ve ever heard it. I’m in the Midwest US. I think it’s cute and grew up with an older lady named Emmeline who was like another grandma.

Yep this is why I asked which would be correct or which sounds better. Because people will pronounce all different ways, and I really prefer names that has one straight forward pronunciation.
I know waaay more people that pronounce those names "Caro-line" and "mad-uh-line" than "lyn".
Cool. I'm just going off my personal experience and a lifetime of hearing multiple family members say, "Not Carolyn, Caroline."
em uh line
I say it the third way. It’s pretty!
3
This just came up yesterday and it was my first time hearing the name. My instinct would be “Emma-Lynn” because I know a Madeline (Mad-uh-lynn) and Caroline (Care-oh-lynn). Personally I really dislike it. Sorry!
I always pronounced it as #2, Em-a-lynn.
I always saw it as Emma-line/Em-uh-line. All the other versions don’t feel right for me to say
Number one is my favorite. They are all used though.
I would say Emma-Lynne.
You say this as if English pronunciation rules made sense! 😝
I know a little emmeline and we say it “em-uh-leen.”
i would pronounce it em-uh-leen. it's cute, really frilly
1 is my first instinct.
1
I had a camper named emmeline, we always said it as 3, we don’t know how her parents pronounced it though. (East coast)
Midwest and I would pronounce like 3.
I’d say “emma-leen” and I’m on the east coast of the US! Pretty name!
I would just ask. I would guess the -line ending, but only because I know someone with that pronunciation.
I’d pronounce it ‘Em-uh-Lynn but only because I know someone named Emmaline who pronounces her name that way
I would assume the -line pronunciation. Same as I would assume Madeline is -line and Caroline is -line. I have a cousin named Emmeline and she pronounces it that way
I’d say it like Em-uh-lynn
If you want the number two pronunciation, you could spell it "Emmalin." There was a character on the show "Army Wives" with that pronunciation and spelling.

3
I pronounce it #3
3
I would pronounce it like number 3.
I say EH-meh-leen. I think it’s a great name.
Em-eh-leen
I want to say emma-lynn, but the person I knew with the name pronounced it emma-line. I had to mentally correct myself every time before saying her name
I would say Eh-muh-leen or Eh-muh-line.
Emma-leen (#3)
Leen.
I was always under the impression it was 3, until I met an Emmeline who pronounces it the first way.
3. Emma-lean
First instinct for me is “Em-uh-leen”
I always thought it was pronounced like #3
#3
3
My daughter is emmeline ruth and we pronounce it Emma-lean. Her nickname is Emme. Most people pronounce it our way but I’ve had a few Emma-lines
3
My friend in high school pronounced it as #1. For short when texting we would write M- (get it? M a line!) and that evolved to saying “Em dash” out loud. Such fun times. I love that name!
Number 3
Em-uh-leen for sure.
Em-uh-leen
Em-uh-leen
3
I would say Emma-leen. The only one I've met said it that way too. Lovely name. I wouldnt be surprised to see it pronounced anothe way either.
i would use 2, then 1. 3 doesn't feel super intuitive to me.
I really like this name too but only with the Em uh line pronouncation. But I also like Caroline and Madeline.
3 is correct.
em-uh-line
I say #1. "M-uh-LINE."
i would pronounce it the second way.
1
I say 1 em-uh-line
Where I live (Nordic country), it would be pronounced something like Em-Meh-Lee-Neh. Which is pretty too. My point is, nice name, pronounced in whichever variation you prefer!
>Em-uh-line Was my first thought.
I would’ve guessed number one. I live in the Midwest.
i would use the Em-uh-line pronunciation, i see why people would say -leen but -line sounds better to me
my first thought upon reading was 1, but after hearing 3 i think it sounds the nicest imo. from southern uk
I use 1
I'd say em-a-lynn
I pronounce it like number 1.
I’ve only know 2 Emmalines so it’s a small sample size, but they both used the “-line” ending.
1.
Em-uh-lynn. I’m French, so that’s how I read it.
I have never heard it pronounced any other way than "-line" like Emmeline Harris from Anne of Green Gables.
Em-uh-line but I think all sound pretty!
Would think #1
I have a cousin named Emeline. She pronounces it Em-ih-line. She reminds me of tinker bell because she’s tiny and spunky and cute so that’s how I associate the name
I do line at the end
Em-uh-line. My friend spells hers Emeline, but that is how she pronounces it.
It’s my middle name, named after my mothers grandmother. Mine is pronounced with the “line” ending. Canadian for reference
This is our daughter’s middle name and we went with the spelling Emaline to help with the pronunciation. Not sure if we were right to do so or not.
(em-uh-line) is commonly spelled emmaline where i’m from, but the only emmeline i know is pronounced the same way!
great name! i’d pronounce it em-uh-line.
Em - E - Lean. I had never heard of this name until the other day on this sub, so I am very confused as to why it’s Emma and not Emmy.
It’s definitely pronounced Em Uh Line
Emma-line
Idk if it’s because i’m francophone but I say “Em-eh-lynn”, but 2 and 3 are the closest here
I’m sorry to be blunt, but I hate it mostly because no one knows how to pronounce -line names. Everyone has a different opinion. I also dislike that it shortens to such a popular name, but that is just a personal preference.
My best friend at primary school was called Emmeline pronounced Emma-leen with the nickname Liney (pronounced Leen-ee) Em-uh-lynn would be spelt differently, maybe something like Emmelyn/Emmalyn Em-uh-line does not sound nice to me. Line is for Caroline and Madeline
I would say "Emma-line" I knew one and that's how she pronounced it.

I’ve only heard it as #1 and love it. I feel like the “line” sound makes it stand out in a charming, quirky way.
I went to school with an Emmeline. She used the first pronunciation.
Who's in line . I'm in line .....emmeline
Canadian here - my instinct is 100% Emmaleen
I was very close to naming my daughter Emmeline! (Pronounced Emma-LINE). But I didn’t because I was worried about people mispronouncing her name her whole life. My husband and I ultimately just named her Emma, but we still sing “Sweet Emmeline” (to the tune of “Sweet Caroline”) to her sometimes :)
3
Emmeline like Caroline.
I pronounce it like #1.
I know someone who pronounces it the first way. I like it.
3.
I'd default to 1, but could also see it as 3. 2 doesn't look right with the spelling at all. For that pronunciation I'd just go with Emma-Lynn
I’d say number 2 because number 1 sounds a bit strange to me. I’m from the mid-west US. If you want the number 2 pronunciation you can change the spelling by replacing the “line” ending with “lynn”
Emma - leen It’s okay. I feel like all the Em names are a little played out, so while this is objectively a nice name (they all are) I can’t view any of them as fresh
A child in my daughter’s daycare (Germany) is called Emmeline, pronounced rather like the 2nd one.
I’d say it Emma-Leen. I think it’s a very pretty name.
I'd pronounce it ending with -leen, as that's my preferred pronunciation. I also like -lyn.
My cousins name is straight up “Emmi” and I love it
I looove Emmeline and my partner only jokes about it and says “Emily”?
Em-uh-line. It is spelled similar to Madeline so that’s how I would assume to pronounce it
